She baked cookies the night before and filled a thermos with coffee this morning. She bought a small bundle of flowers from the store and a bottle of cold water. She walked along the river until her feet were sore. She sat down for her picnic. She was alone. Completely, entirely, absolutely alone. Terribly, terrifically alone. She kept her own company, chatting to herself. She enjoyed the fruits of her own labour, her favorite cookies and warm coffee. The smell of flowers and a sip of water. She didn’t rest so that she could work hard. Nor did she work hard so she could rest. She was born to do both, separate from each other. She was alone not because she was without people, but because she was with herself. When she was done eating, she packed up her things, and went home again. It was not sad that it was over. She could do this whenever she liked.

Deep in my heart I know I am a loner. I have tried to blend in with the world and be sociable, but the more people I meet the more disappointed I am. So, I’ve learned to enjoy myself, my family, and a few good friends.
