Recap and Review for Requiem and S7

Mad spoilers below the cut. Y’all may wanna fight me on this one.

Requiem

This was by turns really fun to watch and really challenging. Cause like… yeah, it’s a full circle moment or whatever, but are we retconning THE PILOT now? I’m inclined to agree with the auditor. What are we even doing here?

Also I know DD wanted off the show. And I can respect that. But my dude would not leave Scully behind like that! Unless there’s something else at play here, but that comes down to production at a certain point. Did they even have future appearances planned for Mulder?

Highlight of this episode: Billy. The kid that started all of this, masquerading as someone who trusts, who believes in anything. Who isn’t terrified at every turn. Fitting that he looked grown, but his voice reminded me of a teenager.

Season 7

Okay so are they fucking or no? It looks like they’re fucking, and they act like they’re in a fluffy fanfiction, but there are also all these little barbed metanarrative remarks about how ludicrous it would be for them to be together. So what’s the deal?

There are some serious clunkers this season, and that’s coming from someone who has confessed multiple times to LOVING a gimmick episode. What even is our theme, our big idea here? I’ve lost track of the syndicate, of who wants to save humanity and who wants to fuck it over.

I felt like even the show wasn’t sure how seriously we were taking things anymore.

Also: This season (maybe the whole show) really fucking does not like Appalachia. And I took that personally.

I didn’t HATE this season. One thing that stood out to me: Mulder and Scully TALK now. How fucking novel! They’re acting like friends instead of pair-bonded stray animals. It’s nice.

Fave eps

Hunger: Monster of the week is actually a fucking tragic dude who is doing his best, but who can’t be anything other than what he is? Yeah, bud. We get do hungry and hurt people.

Millenium: Shut up you already know why.

All Things: I love you, Gillian. That’s all.

Least faves

First Person Shooter: I thought all the hate for this ep was exaggerated. It was not. If anything, we should hate it more. It is shallow, it makes no sense, and it’s ugly to boot.

Theef: Fuck this ep and I mean that.

En Ami: Fuck Cigarette Man and I mean that, too.

ahh im too late to vote in the poll but i recommend freaks and geeks sooo much! i know buffy won but buffy is 7 seasons(+5 of angel if u want to watch both together for continuity) meanwhile freaks and geeks is just one! id recommend seeing that first

I am so conflicted about TV in general because if a show has a super long run, I’m overwhelmed, but if it’s super short, it leaves me wanting more!

i know i’m putting the cart before the horse and also the horse is actually a shetland pony and the cart is a radio flyer BUT!!! when i am done with the alien show… (in approx 1 business eternity) what cult classic should i watch and blog here?

NOTE: I have seen (and adored) Firefly. I’ve watched most of Doctor Who. I’m not gonna watch SPN.

Because this blog is recently back from the dead: At the end of every season, I post a recap, mostly to help me map my own thoughts in real time as I progress through the show. This one might look a little different on account of the EIGHT MONTH break I took in the middle. With that said…

Season Six below the cut!

Biogenesis

You know it’s serious when Nicholas Lea is in the opening credits. And it is! What’s wrong with our boy? Did aliens invent religion? Did aliens invent HUMANS? I love that Scully is so threatened by this — me too girl — but that she is still fucking looking. She has to. It’s Mulder’s only hope.

I was kind of bored for the first little bit — and I’m not much for voiceover monologues — but as a finale, this worked pretty well. It’s dramatic and cliff-hanger-y, and the implications are HUGE. To me, the biggest problem is that there isn’t a ton of momentum.

This ep did, however call us back to the season finale tradition of Fucking Fox Mulder’s Whole Shit. He’s gotta be dead or dying or losing touch with reality… every single time. Am I complaining? No, I’m not.

Season 6

So, my long-ass break took place between Milagro and The Unnatural. That said, I did take NOTES as I watched. Those notes are basically incomprehensible, but they do exist.

This season was fairly balanced in terms of tone, but remember that I’m a silly goose and I love a bit. As I look back, I’m noticing an overarching theme of unreality — dreams, trips, and time loops galore. Tropey? Maybe. But there’s something to that, too, if you think about it. I said at the end of season 5 that Mulder wouldn’t know the truth if he found it; he can’t even trust himself. He can’t trust reality, and we keep seeing that in s6. Ironically, even as he’s in a padded room, I do think Mulder is overall on better footing at the end of this season, in terms of finding his capital-T Truth.

I so wish I could speak to the overall feeling the season gave me, but like I said… long-ass break. Looking at the individual episodes, though, there are some ALL-TIME GREATS here. Speaking of…

Triangle: “I love you.” “Oh brother…” Also the camera work on this goes fucking crazy.

Dreamland 1&2: David Duchovny is too funny for this show. My notes say something about “grandma top gun” and I don’t even know what that means.

The Unnatural: What do you want from me? We know I love a frame story. And Arthur Dales is such a fucking character as he tells his tale — “I’m not taking about women. I’m talking about LOVE.”

Three of a Kind: Gunmen chaos AND horny Scully? Say less.

How the Ghosts Stole Christmas: Just didn’t land for me. Sorry.

S.R.918: Just… kind of… boring. Like, don’t get me wrong, it’s tense, it’s just also… boring.

Two Fathers & One Son: Mytharc eps tend to be a bummer, and Diana Fowley pisses me off. Next.

10 months or so ago, i dropped the x-files in the middle of season 6 because… well because everything. i started a new job, the united states government became a shitstorm, and i stopped enjoying the show.

now, the united states government is even more of a shitstorm, my job is about to become orders of magnitude more intense, and i am back. for how long? who knows. let’s pretend it’s forever, hm?

the thing is, scully knows that mulder would accept her weaknesses and reciprocate her feelings, but she refuses to open up bcs doing so would mean lowering her guard and allowing herself to be seen as anything less than unbreakable, which she can’t bring herself to do. and she absolutely knows that he would create the space for her to be vulnerable without judgement, but that would also require her to depend on someone else, when she’s so used to feeling like she has to deal with her problems alone
