Our new Wildflower Chapter Herbalists Without Borders shirts are here! Why a shirt?? We are responding to the destruction left by Hurricane Harvey as herbalists. As many folks know, as the dust settles many mutual aid grassroots groups can be pushed out of the picture. We have a clinic in Austin at the Wildflower Unitarian church and are forming mobile responses around the gulf coast. These shirts help us to come in resembling more of a church group than wild and weedy group of herbalists. We want to blend in. We are figuring out ways to remain on the ground and an acceptable part of clean up, which in the South, churches are generally given a frew pass. Most of our members are now ordained so that our offerings can be spiritual in nature, more than looked at as medical. In case you were wondering what #hurricaneharvey was like in central Texas. It's been quite nice. Cool, wet and windy. Wind gusts at about 40 mph and the ground is finally saturated and we are getting some water pooling up. Here is a shot of our view at noon on sat. ***Sacred Corn*** We were gifted some very special grains for our gardens from some Water Protectors this winter. Only a small number were viable, but those that came up were like none I have ever seen. The 8 foot corn has tassels drooping down, dancing in the breeze and towering over all the other plants. As the sun beats down and other plants succumb to our drought, it thrives. It is huge, and strong, and at its base has finger-like rootlets grasping towards the Earth. The leaves are a dark bluish green and soft and smooth. Every time I look at them, I am reminded, water is life. I think of Standing Rock, and the struggles that Earth warrIors have as they continue to protect the land and the water. Thank you to everyone who fights to protect the Earth, no matter what the odds.
