I have some personal opinions.
Tumblr is an increasingly rare space on the internet. We strive to be a brave space, where people can engage in difficult conversations, be vulnerable, and grow together. Inclusivity is our ultimate goal, through listening, discussion, critical thinking, and being curious and authentic. The fact that this doesn't feel true everywhere, or even anywhere else, is frightening to me.
But we do have this beautiful, imperfect place, and we need to welcome the new folks we're seeing - they need this brave space, too. They need to be able to learn, grow, and be themselves in a place where they can find their community, especially if doing so IRL becomes illegal for them.
We need each other right now, and we can't let imaginary division tear us down and scatter our voices and our ability to connect and support each other. We can't let propaganda about vulnerable populations drown out our collective lived reality. We have each other, and we can gain many more allies just by being welcoming and inclusive - especially as other spaces on the internet become increasingly hostile and exclusive.
I've been deeply honored to serve this community, which has taught me so much and keeps me humble. It's helped my skin thicken while opening my heart. To me, Tumblr isn't a fun curiosity or a way to spend time that passes. Or, it's not just that (sometimes that's what I need from Tumblr). It's an essential, life-saving community that guides young people through scary moments whether personal, national, or global. It's a place where a person can become the person they were always meant to be. It's an opportunity for people to grow beyond what they thought possible. It's these things because of the community here.
I think we also underestimate the necessity for silliness and shitposts when things are dark. We need to be able to laugh together, and I am absolutely indebted to the people who have made me laugh here over the years, because sometimes they're the thing that can turn around my day, week, or month. We will need fortitude over the next few years, and making time to laugh and indulging in silliness and play is essential.
So, thank you, Tumblr. Let's keep going.
