Nishiko jumped at the sound of Dyakov’s voice.
She whirled around to shine the flashlight in his face. Yes, it was him. Or someone who appeared to be him. Instinctively, she let the flashlight’s beam fall to his feet. Two solid-looking feet, right where they belonged. She let out a sigh of relief. Being caught out by the corporeal Dyakov was bad enough.
“I didn’t think you'd be here.” She avoided his eyes now, focusing on the corridor behind him. Let no one come by just now, please.
What the hell had happened to Shinsuke’s plan? What had happened to Shinsuke? When Shinsuke disposed of people, they stayed disposed. That was her experience up to this point. She hadn’t been happy with his decision to sell Dyakov to the Amanto. It’d lost them such a huge opportunity. But she’d accepted it as a done deal.
“I was looking for any information about that skill of yours,” she continued, mustering up all her calm to answer him. “Surely you realize that as a doctor I was intrigued and impressed by that display.” She glanced down at her arm. “I must thank you for saving my life.”
The Company We Keep - Nishiko and Vlad
She didn’t have much time. This hospital was busy day and night, and someone might come by Dyakov’s office and hear her movements inside.
Ransacking through a coworker’s office was a risky proposition under any circumstances, but in this case, if she was found in his office the night he went missing … She wouldn’t be caught, she assured herself. She was careful to shield the beam of her small flashlight so that no light escaped under the door. She made no sound, not even letting the papers rustle as she sorted through Dyakov’s files.
There might be something in these: a clue to Dyakov’s powers. Shinsuke had sent him far away, too far to ever be of use, but what if Dyakov’s healing technique could be replicated? What if there were others like Dyakov out there? She had to find out.
And then if she was successful, she’d be ready for the inevitable day when Shinsuke or the others needed her. She couldn’t stop Shinsuke from going to his chosen end, but until then, she’d fight off Death from him with all her might.

Harmony in the Workplace
Dear Tanaka-Sensei,
Some discrepancies in the hospital records have come to my attention. I can see you've done some favours to certain "disreputable" parties, and I expect you would like to keep those favours private. A small stipend will suffice: nothing crazy, perhaps 30,000 Yen a month. You are independently wealthy, aren't you? So the sum won't cause you much pain.
I've set up a secure and untraceable bank account off-planet. Details for electronically transferring funds are at the bottom of this note.
Yours respectfully,
Your future comrade in silence
For the tenth time today, Nishiko put down the blackmail note. There really wasn't anything more to be gleaned from it. Still, she couldn't help reading and re-reading it, trying to tease out the identity of the sender from the writer's turn of phrase.
The note had showed up in her office inbox this morning. She'd reacted by taking an early lunch and making a call to an intermediary who would pass her message on to Takasugi. She'd be working late in her office at the hospital, she added, after the clerical staff were sent home.
So now she sat at her desk, late at night, and sorted listlessly through her paperwork. She didn't fear this blackmailer. He or she was in for the surprise of their life. The final surprise. But she was impatient. How long would she need to wait? If no one was here by midnight, she'd assume it wasn't urgent enough for immediate action, and go home.
In the meantime, she'd make herself another cup of coffee.

Introducing Nishiko
Edo's destruction weighed heavy on her heart. She never for a second had doubted Shinsuke would keep that promise. When she had first arrived in Edo to study medicine, she was grieving her comrades and family, so she had found comfort in imagining the day when Shinsuke would bring down fire on this vile, complacent city. But as the years passed, she had somehow come to care for the city and its people. Her heart was torn in two, for she still wanted revenge, and she hated the weakness that had grown inside her.
I've finally got around to launching the RP blog for my Gintama OC, Tanaka Nishiko. It's not looking very nice right now, because I have no design chops and I'm leaving the pretty-fying to friends who've promised to help.
But the meat and potatoes of writing is my job and I've written her biography and my guidelines for RPing with her.
And here's a sketch of Nishiko, courtesy of the talented magiakinesis.
