Terra Week Day 6
Prompt: Wounds/Scars
——
His first memory after his return is waking up in Master Yen Sid’s tower with his head resting on Aqua’s lap and his hands each gripped tightly by Ven and Aqua. Their faces are the first thing he sees. Ven is grinning; Aqua’s eyes shine with tears even as she smiles at them both. His own eyes sting. After everything that’s happened, it’s hard to believe that this is real and not an illusion meant to taunt him. But they’re here and so is he and they’re holding hands and this is real. It’s all that really matters in the end.
For the first few weeks after he’s reclaimed his body, he can’t speak, or move, or do literally anything without assistance. After being possessed for so long, he’s not used to controlling his own body and must re-learn how to almost from scratch.
(It doesn’t help that the possession also put a strain on his body. His muscles feel like they’ve been beaten and worn-down; his throat and voicebox ache dreadfully; and his limbs feel numb in the absence of the leaden weight of invisible strings he’d become used to.)
It takes him a week to even begin to speak again; three more until he’s strong enough to start walking. Ven and Aqua refuse to leave his side throughout all of it. He’s grateful for that, though he can’t help feeling a bit guilty. Like he doesn’t deserve their devotion. (Maybe he doesn’t. It doesn’t really matter, because they’re not leaving him even if he asks them to.)
He tries to apologize for the mistakes he’d made that led them to their respective fates. They only shake their heads.
‘We all made mistakes,’ Ven says. ‘It wasn’t just you.’
‘What matters is that we’re together now,’ Aqua adds. She holds out her wayfinder on her out-stretched palm. ‘Together, always,’ she says firmly. ‘Always.’
He and Ven hold out their own wayfinders. The three of them glow faintly underneath the bedroom light.
‘Always,’ they agree.
ooooo
The nightmares begin a week after the battle. Most of the time they’re about Xehanort, and his time as his vessel. Darkness pressing on him, threatening to consume him. His body acting of its own accord, committing unspeakable acts. And, maybe worst of all, that feeling of losing himself piece by piece, of becoming him.
He wakes up with a sobbing cry on his lips, startling Aqua and Ven. They’re not asleep, to his relief. Aqua’s on one side of him, keyblade gripped tightly in her hand. Her gaze darts across the room they’d been allocated, searching for Heartless. Ven isn’t as tense as Aqua—he’s lying on his back on Terra’s other side, his arm brushing lightly against Terra’s. Even so, he won’t close his eyes. He doesn’t want to fall into another ten-year-long sleep, he claims.
Whatever troubles they have, they put them aside to help Terra, immediately reaching for him to calm him down and bring him back to himself. With his hands gripped in theirs, he feels safer, more grounded. The fear of Xehanort fades away and he remembers where he really is.
Even after they’ve returned to the Land of Departure, they sleep together in one bed. It’s more comforting for all of them, even months after Xehanort’s final defeat. One night, after a particularly bad nightmare, Terra wakes up to feel someone gently shaking his arm. Panic seizes him, and he just reacts, knocking them off the bed. Someone cries out in surprise; still mostly asleep, he doesn’t take much notice of it.
Moments later, he turns to see Aqua crouched on the floor. She glares at him with wild eyes, her entire body trembling. Her keyblade is gripped between whitened fingers.
‘Terra, I’m sorry,’ she says. He closes his eyes as she leaps at him. Her keyblade slashes his chest, sharp and searing, and he (or Xehanort) cries out in rage. When he touches it, though, there’s nothing there. That brings him back to himself. He finds himself in his room, Aqua sitting beside him on the bed. He’s crying—when did he start crying? He clings to Aqua as if for dear life—he can feel Aqua doing the same to him, and can feel the hotness of her tears as her head rests against his chest.
‘I’m sorry,’ Aqua repeats. Her hand gently brushes against his chest, where the faded diagonal scar lies hidden underneath his shirt. ‘I had to do it.’
‘I know,’ he whispers. He would’ve killed her, otherwise. Or rather, Xehanort would have. What she did saved him, even if it also left him with a raised scar on his chest as well as countless others on the remainder of his body. He’ll forever be grateful for that alone.
ooooo
He avoids looking in mirrors for months after the battle, lest he see the permanent marks Xehanort’s possession has left on him. Streaks of silver in his brown hair; slightly pointed ears. They don’t go away after the old master has left his body. Aqua and Ven assure him that they don’t care, that he’s still Terra to them and always will be, but even so he can’t help feeling like a complete stranger sometimes.
His voice is deeper than it used to be—a mix of his and Xemnas’. (It’s a horrible shock, to those who knew Xemnas before; he can’t blame them for subtly avoiding him during that first year after Xehanort’s defeat.) His handwriting will never be the same, either.
Even the habitual tics than he’d had before are foreign to him now. It all leaves him feeling even more that he’s come back to a body that is no longer his.
It’s hard not to feel angry, and bitter. After everything, after thirteen years of psychological torture and imprisonment inside his own body, it’s hard not to think that Xehanort has still won. He hadn’t wanted to spend the rest of his damned life with the physical reminders of his possessed years and the mistakes he’d made that had brought him—them– to that point.
But, as he lies in bed, sandwiched between a sleeping Aqua and Ven, peace and contentment envelops him. Ven’s curled against his back, and Aqua’s resting with her head on his chest and her body curled toward his. He can feel Aqua’s heartbeat and Ven’s gentle breathing on either side of him, and any bitterness and pain he has feels like a faraway, lost dream. And he admits to himself that for all the difficulties his new life may pose, he’s just glad he can be with them.

But I Swear I Won't Forget You
Pairing: Terra/Aqua (with brot3 too), Kingdom Hearts
Setting: Any time from the end of Birth by Sleep to before III
Rating: K
Words: 2166
Notes: Okay so this is actually the very first thing I ever wrote for Kingdom Hearts but I was too nervous to publish it haha But I kept it cause I really did wanna come back to these since I enjoyed feeling dumping into this set as a very new fan with all these emotions I didn’t know how to handle (which I mean hasn’t changed lol) So when I saw it was a week for my best boy and one of the prompts lined up fairly well, I knew it was time to start sharing this set! This is for the last day of @terraweek, Wounds/Scars.
I got this idea when I was explaining the characters to someone I realized all three of them were in sleep like dream worlds so to speak. So I wanted to do a small set from each perspective and the things they may feel based on character development or just headcanons I may’ve devised. (The original notes for this were along the lines of “oh god how did this happen, what am I doing, how can I feel so much for this series,” as I spiraled down into hell LOL) The title is from “Vanilla Twilight” by Owl City.
AO3
1. Terra
It was a lot like sleeping. Sometimes there was nothing, and sometimes there were dreams; on the worst occurrences there were nightmares.
Terra wasn’t asleep though. He wouldn’t wake up and find himself in his familiar bed, the moon shining in through the window, one of two pairs of blue eyes peering into his room seeking some form of comfort from their own nightmares. He had already come to terms that those particular things would probably never happen again; as much as that was his own nightmare.
He didn’t even know where he was. Whenever he tried to work it out, it only led to more questions he couldn’t answer. He didn’t know where he was, how long he was there for, or if he could even consider himself actually himself anymore. It was like he was floating in some odd limbo where sometimes it was so dark, so heavy, he barely wanted to keep going. Those were the times the nightmares were the worst.
Sometimes he saw people he didn’t know suffering in front of him, eyes looking out of a body he couldn’t control. Someone else’s voice spoke from his lips, someone else’s feelings of power and the sickeningly sweet call of the darkness covered Terra. No matter how hard he fought he couldn’t budge.
Sometimes he saw people he did know, which was worse. They were never happy to see him and though he knew, he knew he was happy to see them he never felt it. It happened the same way every time; he was confronted, they fought, and he struck them down. He’d walk away without a passing glance to the two bodies on the floor, the smaller one next to the one whose blue hair covered her face. It was the worst sorts of agony, deepest kind of guilt when that voice wouldn’t stop echoing that it was his fault, all of it was his fault.
Terra didn’t know if he’d survive if that’s all his existence became but thankfully the reprieve came when the darkness wasn’t quite as dark, when he felt stronger, when he could hear her voice calling out his name. Sometimes it was soft, just a lingering but warm presence that kept him company even though he knew she was far beyond his reach. Sometimes it was so loud he thought she was right there. Those were the times he felt the most alive, where he could push past the dark block in his head and regain some form of control.

Title: Sleepless Night
Summary: Sleepless nights were something Aqua was accustomed to now. On her usual trip to the kitchen in the middle of the night, she finds out that she isn’t the only sleepless person that night.
This is a story for @terraweek ‘s prompt “free choice”. I hope Aqua doesn’t steal Terra’s spotlight too much :/
Rating: T (for canon violence mention)
Also available on: ao3
Please enjoy!
A silent gasp escaped Aqua as she set up instantaneously, her whole body trembling. She intuitively roamed the ground beneath her, grasping at the sheets that were wound tightly around her legs, breathing heavily until her eyes picked up a tiny light in the corner of her eye. She turned to it.
It was a small, flower shaped night light Ven had brought into her room to help her sleep. It did help; she progressed from sleeping less than two hours at a time to being able to sleep for up until five hours. It helped remind her that she was back in the Realm of Light and not stuck in the Dark Worlds anymore.
Her breathing evened out as the rest of her surroundings reappeared: Books and their bookshelf slowly took shape again as well as her small work desk in the other corner of the room. Aqua’s hand twitched slightly at the movement behind her chair until she recognized the curtains, swaying softly in the warm summer night. She raked her fingers through her hair, tousling it up even more, and  breathed heavily when she reached for the alarm clock with her other hand.
2.30 am.

A piece for @terraweek ! Maybe a bit late, but it’s there nonetheless.
The 5th day was a free day, so I decided to draw about… freedom ! Which that poor boy lacks. I really like his similarities with Riku. I just hope he will accomplish his goal of protecting his friends as well…

Terraweek: Free choice
Smile again
Terra is looking for Aqua at the castle of dreams. He finds her, but not quite how he expected to.
_________________
So i finally finished this. I haven’t written in quite a while and it definitely shows lol. But I’m glad i sat down and actually finished it. I think it turned out a bit more shippy than i originally wanted. Also it got longer than I originally wanted XD.
Pairing: Terraqua
Words: 1843

Terra appeared in a flash of light as he landed. He still remembered it well. This was the world he met Cinderella in.
It was late at night.Terra ended up just outside the walls of the castle. He could see lights and hear music coming out from the inside. A ball, probably. Terra sighed at the familiarity. He sneaked past the guards (who were already drunk) and made his way towards the castle.

Terraweek: Words and Quotes
Being a Keyblade Master is all I’ve dreamed about!
Trying myself at young Terra and Aqua. We honestly need more of that.
Anyway
I was thinking that Terra had grown impatient because his keyblade didn’t appear yet and that’s why he made the keyblade out of wood. Aqua is… sceptical that this will help at all lol but is actually a bit jealous (though she wouldn’t admit it). Eraqus helped Terra with making the blade properly.

Terra Week Day 5
Prompt: Free Choice
I decided to post another fanfic for Day 5, because my first one was so short. This one’s actually snippets of a fanfic I started back in December (and will probably never finish) about Terra and Aqua meeting in the Realm  of Darkness (which was inspired by another fic I saw on tumblr).
Beginning
It only takes a second. He shouts out her name, but can only watch in horror as she is thrown back into darkness. All of his power is being used to restrain Xehanort long enough for Aqua to escape.
Xehanort struggles as the chains wrap around him. His eyes flash with fury at Terra. A promise. It’s worth it, though, if it keeps Aqua safe from him.
oooo
She hasn’t changed at all since the last time they saw each other. She’s carrying Master Eraqus’ keyblade, Master Keeper, in her hand.
‘Aqua?’
Pure darkness surrounds them both. He can’t see any of their surroundings.
Aqua jumps slightly, and whips around like lightning, keyblade at the ready to attack. The look in her eyes makes him take a step back—it’s an angry, almost feral look that he’s never seen on her face before.
‘How do I know you’re not Xehanort? Or an illusion?’
Her eyes, filled with suspicion, lock on his.
‘Trust me. I’m real and I’m not Xehanort.’ As real as can be, anyway. He’s not sure what his current status is, seeing as he’s a heart and mind trapped in and bound to darkness.
He wants to ask about Ven, but doesn’t think that it’s a good idea, especially after what he just said about Xehanort. Aqua however must see the question in his eyes, because she answers quietly, ‘I haven’t seen him since we were in Enchanted Dominion. It’s been a while.’
oooo
‘You’re right not to trust me,’ he says, looking away. ‘I wouldn’t trust me.’
‘Terra, I’m sorry,’ she sighs. ‘I just… can’t.’
‘I know.’
He echoes her sigh, and she reaches out to put a hand on his arm before remembering that he’s not corporeal.
‘We can talk about other things, okay?’
oooo
When he next visits her, she’s sitting on the edge of a cliff, nursing a wound she’d probably sustain during a battle with Heartless. She doesn’t look up as she feels him appear.
‘That looks bad.’
She shakes her head. ‘It’s nothing a curaga won’t heal.’
It hurts too much to speak, so she doesn’t say anything more. It’s just like her, to try and be strong and brave even when she doesn’t have to be.
He can see a fading scrape across her cheek, and a bleeding cut on her cracked lips. He wishes he could help her somehow, hug her at the very least, make her feel like she’s not alone. But he’s just a projection—he doesn’t have that power. He can only watch as she winces and struggles not to cry and tries to be strong.
‘You shouldn’t come here,’ Aqua says.
He turns to look at her. There’s worry in her eyes—and fear. Her brow is creased in a way that he hates.
He laughs—or tries to. ‘Since when do you tell me where I should be?’
He hopes to make her smile; he only succeeds in deepening her frown.
‘You shouldn’t put yourself at risk like this. I know what he does to you, when you’re not here. ????’
He looks away. ‘It doesn’t matter.’
‘It matters to me,’ she snaps. ‘I don’t want you to get hurt because of me!’
He closes his eyes and waits for his temper to subside before trying to speak.
‘It’s my choice. Do you think being with him is better than being here? I miss you. I’ve missed you for ages. Do you really think I wouldn’t choose this?’
‘I miss you too,’ she says quietly. Compassion laces her voice. ‘But it hurts that you hurt. Sometimes I wish you wouldn’t.’
oooo
‘Terra?’
‘Yeah?’
‘I’m glad you’re here.’
‘Me too,’ he says.
oooo
‘Heartless!’
Aqua’s leaning against a rock when they ambush them; he’s standing beside her. Immediately Master Keeper materializes into her grasp and she straightens into a fighting stance.
He can’t fight alongside her—he’s not completely there and doesn’t even have a keyblade—but he can warn her of approaching Heartless. Which he does.
As always, he loves watching her fight. He loves the grace with which she dispatches her enemies, the fluid movements and acrobatics she utilizes as she darts across the area.
oooo
‘I will take what I am owed from you. Your precious Master Eraqus isn’t here to protect you now. You are alone.’
He can’t help the shiver of remembered fear that ricochets through him. He doesn’t recall much othe split—he only remembers feeling a sudden shock and terror just before being thrown into darkness. It threatened to consume him—it almost had, as his consciousness had begun to fade—but just before the darkness took him, he felt a barrier of light surround him. Master Eraqus. He had protected him from Xehanort’s darkness in the only way he could, and had paid the price for it.
oooo
‘Terra!’
He hears her voice, sees the flash of Master Keeper in his mind’s eye. Somehow, somewhere, he finds the strength to move.
It surprises Xehanort, he sees with some satisfaction. His look-alike’s eyes and narrowed in incredulous, amber-gold fury.
‘I shouldn’t be surprised,’ he remarks. ‘You were always a thorn in my side even before we split into Heartless and Nobody. It’s a pity Eraqus protected you—I would’ve consumed you if it weren’t for his interference.’
Terra closes his eyes and lets out a relieved breath he didn’t know he was holding. Thank you, Aqua.
Warmth bathes him, touches his heart like an embrace. He can sense words forming, and though they’re not consciously spoken he knows what they are.
‘I won’t,’ he murmurs, and smiles.
oooo
‘I have to go. I can’t come back, or–‘ he breaks off and looks away, before repeating in a quieter tone, ‘I can’t come back. I’m sorry.’
‘I know,’ she says. ‘I understand.’ She wants to touch him, hug him or hold his hand, but knows that she would only phase through him. He’s only a ghost, a projection of his heart, influenced by her heart’s memories of him. He’s not really there. He never will be.
‘I’m sorry too.’ She doesn’t cry—her tears had run dry long ago. Numb. She feels numb. ‘Just promise me… you’ll keep fighting. Don’t let the darkness take you.’
‘Only if you promise too,’ he responds. ‘Don’t give up.’
She looks at him for a second, before nodding. ‘I won’t.’
oooo
After wandering through endless darkness for who knows how long, the last thing she expects to see is her childhood home—not as she last saw it, transformed into a forbidding castle, but as it used to be before Xehanort destroyed it. Dreaming. She must be dreaming. The Land of Departure is gone.
She walks up to the summit. It looks as it always has.
‘Terra!’
His wayfinder is in his hands—she sees him looking at it closely and fingering it. When he hears her call his name he jerks his head up. He doesn’t look any different than the other times she’s seen him, she thinks, except for his eyes. They’re filled with a deep sadness that mirrors her own.
oooo
‘Where’s Ven?’
‘He couldn’t make it.’ Is it her imagination, or do Terra’s eyes glisten slightly as he speaks?
They sit at the summit, looking up at the stars together. She leans into Terra, savouring the feel of his body against hers after so much time spent alone without any companionship.
‘I wish Ven was here,’ she says. ‘I wish all three of us could be here, looking up at the stars like we used to.’
He doesn’t say anything, but she knows he agrees.
oooo
‘Is this the end?’ She forces the terrible words out of her suddenly dry mouth. ‘We’re both trapped. Me in the Realm of Darkness, and you with Xehanort…’
He flinches, and she instantly regrets her choice of words.
His eyes are sad, but he answers, ‘No.’
A single tear slides down the bridge of her nose. ‘I’m sorry I wasn’t able to save you, or Ven. I’m sorry I failed you.’
‘You haven’t failed us,’ Terra says. ‘It’s not over yet.’
‘How do you know?’
There’s a vulnerable, terrified look in her eyes he’s never seen before.
He squeezes her hand. ‘I believe in you. You’re the strongest person I know. You’ll survive and find a way out and then you’ll save us.’
In his eyes, there isn’t any question. She’s Keyblade Master Aqua and she can do anything.
oooo
End
They lay on the grass, holding hands, and watch the stars until their time is gone. The world fades to darkness around him; he is left with the brief feelings of contentment and peace that he’ll probably never have again.
Was any of it real? Or was it all just a dream? Sometimes, he can’t tell. Darkness has a way of twisting a person’s memories into something unrecognizable. Making one doubt their sanity.
In the end, he only knows that he must keep fighting. Like he’d promised Aqua. He won’t let the darkness consume him if he can help it. He’ll survive long enough to see Aqua and Ven again, and make right his mistakes. After that, nothing much will matter anymore.
