Raph: Do your worst!
Mikey: I'll cry.
Raph: ...what?
Mikey: You heard me. I'll start bawling like a toddler that dropped his ice cream on the sidewalk. In front of your friends, our family, your girlfriend, and I'll tell them it's because YOU won't be my friend.
Raph: You wouldn't!
Mikey: I think I might be misting up already.

The real reason your sapient dragon character needs a "rider":
Dragons on the wing are vulnerable to being mobbed by smaller, more agile flyers, particularly in your large rear blind spot, like a bird of prey being mobbed by crows. Having a human armed with a long spear perched on your back helps to dissuade anyone from getting any funny ideas.
Breath weapons are impressive enough on the ground, but in flight they're really only good for strafing stationary targets; trying to use your breath weapon in an aerial dogfight is a good way to get fire up your nose. A real fight calls for sterner measures – and, concomitantly, a crew to aim and reload the cannons.
In today's competitive world, it's not enough to devour a flock of sheep and call it a day if you want to keep your edge. You're accompanied at all times by a qualified personal alchemist tasked with carefully regulating your internal furnace to ensure peak performance, and sometimes you even listen to them.
No dragon of any quality would be caught dead without their valet. It's not as though you can announce your numerous long-winded titles yourself when introductions are called for, can you? You suppose next you'll be expected to pick up the spoils of your conquests yourself, like a common brigand. Perish the thought!

"READ MY DNI" no. use your block button like an adult. i'm not scrolling through the many-paragraphs-long pinned posts of every blog i reblog something from. if you insist certain types of people aren't welcome in the notes of your posts then it's your responsibility to curate that. or choose a closed social media platform like facebook or instagram. or go and live in a barn away from humanity if you really don't like sharing the world with people who are different from you

the dark turtles they they. raised in the dark competing for survival psychologically conditioned to resent each other in order to keep them dangerous. imagine you kinda know you're a clone of some great fighters but your main concern is trying to stay as strong as your bros so you can get your share of the food. and then one fay you meet your clone (strong fighter guy) (you've always been compared to him) (he's supposed to be scarier than you) (you have to act strong enough to bring him down so your brothers will continue to respect/fear you because that tenuous connection is what's keeping you alive) (maybe deep down you also think: it's what's keeping them alive and they probably don't realize this) and he turns out to be a nice guy and teaches you about sharing and offers for you to be a frog instead of a scorpion. Obviously you want to be a scorpion because in his little allegory the scorpion wins and your survival has always depended on winning. You need your brothers to be scared of you so they'll do what you say and you can ise their skills for your gain (survival) but also they're the inly emotional connection you have and you do want them also safe and surviving which is even more reason why you have to win and
Wait what was that about sharing
Is it option... to be kind? and survive?
maybe for this pretty boy who had everything handed to him who didn't have to scrape together the idea of tenderness and community like scraping moss out of the cracks in the concrete in your sewer home. probably not for you? probably not for you
and then and then he goes home and teaches his brothers about sharing. I want a whole spin off series just about these guys each realizing they aren't the only one who cares about the others and they can be gentle and they can build themselves and each other a safe space and it sure as heck is not gonna be easy and sometimes they'll get hurt in the process and it won't feel worth it but dang it it's better than where we came from we're going to create hope and love if it kills us

in 2003 especially it just really gets to me how much the turtles see themselves as the city's protectors
I mean in the way that they are 'expendable' and protect humans and y'lyntians and whatever those fish people are called and Professor Honeycutt all so automatically. idk they're so immediately willing to put themselves in danger and so remorseful about any inconvenience that ever happens to anyone besides them
Like it's good there are four of them because they value each other. If any brother was alone he'd have absolutely no sense of self worth or self preservation. I mean the mindset makes sense for the way they grew up isolated, it's obvious Splinter taught them kindness, and he's following an example of a man who was a Guardian whose job it is to always protect others. And in the meantime what they see on TV and even on the news is creatures who look like them are either gross and scary, or Superheroes
Anyways I'm thinking about how Kirby insists on sending Donny back through the portal first (he doesn't know why he's a talking turtle, he says he's seen strange stuff but that was all to do with his doodles coming to life, for all he knows earth isn't Donny's home but he's gonna send the kid back to the last place he saw him. the way he recognizes him as a kid and prioritizes his safety the way adults should for kids when the turtles so rarely experience that is make me emotions. he even gives him a little inspirational message 😭)

Instead if the typical arguing over leadership. Raph and Leo’s arguments consist of who sacrifices themselves while the others get away. Meanwhile the bad guys are like um you know we are still here right?
*nods violently*
like in 2012 Raph is so scared when Leo tries sacrificing himself (something Splinter encouraged whether he meant to or not), and like yeah there is canonically an element of jealousy which is addressed, but it's much less often addressed how much Raph pushing back against Leo's leadership is because of those experiences. Of course he's gonna have a hard time trusting Leo's leadership when he consistently gets reminders that to Leo, being a leader means throwing yourself into the fire first
And in the meantime Leo's so protective and wants Raph to 'stay put' and 'not be a hothead' for the same reasons but opposite. Like. hnnnnn
Then in 03, Raph really does trust Leo's leadership and most of the time Leo is careful and thoughtful, not overly cautious, but it's a much slower build to the perfectionism and self-incrimination mixing in unfortunate ways with an altruistic heart. And Raph is seeing it first, and fighting it loudest, and Leo's entire ptsd arc is about how much he hates himself for asking his family to sacrifice themselves to stop the Shredder. I think of the City at War arc where, when Raph breaks and leaves, his parting words to Leo are 'just don't get these guys killed.' Like, Fine, if you don't want me to protect you, I won't, but that means it's on you to protect our little brothers. If I can't stop you from putting yourself up on the altar, you just better not bring them with you. And what Raph's really upset about is that all the ways he usually tries to protect Leo aren't working, but later on what Leo's internalized is that he shouldn't ask that of him family; he'd ask it of himself every time (it's a whole other post about how much Leo has tied up his purpose in life with being the Shredder's enemy and if Shredder is defeated then who is he and what is he worth)
Meanwhile whenever Leo holds Raph back it's most often like this: Raph saw someone in trouble or something unfair, and immediately instinctively wanted to throw his body in front of the victim, the way he always does for his brothers during a fight. Leo knows Raph does this, he knows how deeply his brother cares about their city and how instinctively protective he is if anyone helpless (weaponless, back turned, kids, elderly, animals--Raph does not like to see an uneven fight). And he's always immediately ready with a hand on his shoulder and a succinct, gentle explanation of a safer plan because he doesn't want to see Raph give himself up and he knows he would, without even thinking about it
Anyways--
Yes I love this scenario it fits them. Also makes me think of sainw where their big fight was over Splinter doing this exact move, with Leo putting off the grief and guilt in order to focus on the mission Splinter left him with, keeping his brothers safe, while Raph felt it all full force and immediately and could only see Leo abandoning someone who needed them. They probably both wished over the years that it had been them instead
Also imagining that if these two are arguing and the bad guys are watching, then they are in fact distracted which would allow Donnie and Mikey to disappear and once they've disappeared they can create a diversion to rescue Leo and Raph without anyone being left behind. Which also leaves them continuing their argument with nothing resolved between them ajdhahavaj

“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Okay, Imma talk incohernetly about 2012 Raph because I have feelings.
So, this train of thought started when I noticed that he always sits farthest away from the TV. Mikey and Leo are practically nosing the screen and Donnie sits close as well when he's actually there, but Raph is usually a solid 15 feet away at least. At first I thought it was because he just didn't care for television; he was usually reading a comic after all.
But then I was watching him more carefully, and I don't think that's entierly it. See, he doesn't seem to like being surprised by things. When Mikey walked in with his *imaginateive* pizza he screamed. Actuall involuntary yell of distress there. When the Shell Raizer crashed around the corner that one time Donnie rescued them all he leapt the highest and stayed crouched down long after all the others were calm and talking.
As someone who watches movies with my dad on occasion I can relate to subconciously scooting away from the screen. The volume is fine enough for the talking scenes, BUT IT COULD CHANGE SCENES AT ANY MOMENT AND BE WAY TOO LOUD OR THE LOUD MUSIC COULD START OR SOMETHING HORRIFYING COULD JUMP UP ON SCREEN AND IT WOULD BE LOUD!! I don't think he dislikes loud noises (he yells and plays the drums after all). I think he dislikes surprises, and sudden movements, and noises he can't predict or controll. As long as he's expecting it he's fine, but as soon as something surprises him he's easily the most high strung of the brothers. Whether his reaction be to stab it, or shriek, or both.
And if you're touching elbows with your brothers they'll feel it when you jump at that scene change.
Am I making sense? I had more scenes in my head where he was doing stuff like this, but I can't remember them now.
