Completed my tacit taste video and reflection
I needed a lot of time with it at the end due to my lack of knowledge of using a particular programme. I had so much fun while I was doing paperwork and taking photos with a help by my friend.
In the first week of tacit taste project, I didn’t really understand the tacit taste. After I understood what tacit taste is, but I had a problem with choosing what my tacit taste is. It was been a while since I made a call to my mom, but by this project I called my mom to ask for an idea. She was so glad to get a call from me. She was keep asking how I am doing here alone, so i couldn’t ask for my tacit taste which is created by her. In second time, I was finally able to get an answer from her, she told me a story about me, when I was a child I hated milk and she made a secrete recipe to make me drink milk by creating the milk ramen. With this idea, I started planning. I changed my plan three times and finally put a plot twist to make it interesting. As i planned, I did paperwork to create ingredients of ramen and also drew me and my mom having conversation to help viewers to understand how this became my tacit taste. After I finished all the handworks, I start to film with an help by my friend. I had a lot of fun in this part. However video editing part was almost killing me even though I spent few days watching tutorials from lynda.com. Anyway I made it and I learned communicating through media, using a certain programme, and planning.

Reflection
In this course we are require to make a video of the topic TACIT TASTE, which I have never heard of the word tacit before in the beginning of this class. It worries me a lot because we have make a video expressing a experience. This is a really open brief so we can basically do whatever we want. I tried to ask for examples but unfortunately we are the first batch that are doing this brief.
We started our “research” with a group activity, which you have to go out and have a food experience with your classmate. I think this activity had actually gave us an idea of what the brief want us to express. Then we have some in class activities like using food as our paintbrush, painting and creating artworks to find inspiration for our video. Shayna also showed us several videos about how people share their food experience by different methods. All these little activities were actually leading us to the big picture, providing us small little information that we will use when it comes to making the video.
After all we finally get to start our main project, the video. First we have to come out with a narratives, we need to have a storyboard to put our ideas together. I did quite a lot of sketches because throughout the process I tried to change my main content of the narratives to a different one, but I still went back to the initial idea in the end. I have no experience In editing videos nor some of my classmates so we are on the same boat when it came to the editing part. For my narratives, I tried to recall do I have any deep impression of food experience back in my hometown. Then I came up with a dish that we will have every Chinese new year. This dish is really meaningful to my family and I because the recipes and methods of making is passed on generation by generation.
I tried to make the video for filming purpose and surprisingly it turned out quite good but its not the same taste as home and thats why its called TACIT TASTE. I tried to do everything by myself because i am the only person that knows the experience so I film it myself, cook the dish myself at the same time and finally edit the video by myself. That was definitely a good chance to enhance my multi-tasking skills!! It is really tough, it took me two days to film and cook the whole thing but 10 minutes to finish the dish.
After the filming part, editing it was also one of the hardships I encountered throughout this assignment. Shayna had suggested us to use after effects which I know slightly about it because I did a stop motion in after effects last year but I insisted in using Premiere pro because I want to try something new and useful for my future. To use a whole new apps means endless GOOGLING. I googled every single thing and watch tutorials on youtube to finally achieved my final video.
Overall, this course had really stressed me a lot in the beginning but I gained a little confidence after researching and knowing what I actually want to do. I know its all about experiment and trying and trying and more trying so I did bring my camera around every day to film and practice on my editing. My video actually turned out almost like what I want and its a success considered that its my FIRST EVER VIDEO.

END OF SEMESTER : FOOD FESTIVAL
It was a really sunny day, event started around 11 after everyone helping to set up the place. Although it wasn’t a big event but almost everyone end up having their work to share with the others studio. I am in the tacit taste studio which we make videos as our final so we didn't really produce any physical artwork and that is why it is really fun to see all the other different studios have like a zine, crafts, illustrations etc. Andy’s studio impressed me the most because in that class everyone actually have to make 25 copies of their work, not for selling, not for submitting purpose but for sharing. Everyone in the class can get to have a copy of others’ work, the idea is really good because those are the stuff that you can’t buy with money. Everyone was having quite a good time including my friends and I, as we really love the photo booths and props !

Food Futures
Publication Design and Curation
‘Curated and Designed in collaboration with Kate Sweetapple Foreword by LinYee Yuan from MOLD
Food Futures presents a collection of design projects that illustrate the possibilities that new technologies open up to designers and the way we perceive food in a design context. This book explores current experimentation and innovation in food design from both material and conceptual perspectives. The projects selected for this edition have been realised through design, and perform inquiries into our responsibility and relationship with food and how social and environmental changes will transform how we experience it in the future.’

Twenty-Fifty
‘Twenty-Fifty is a visual exploration of the global food crisis predicted for the year two thousand and fifty – a result of the inability of the earth’s natural resources to meet future demand. The project presents a series of eight data visualisation posters, each exposing one primary issue responsible for this future crisis. It looks closely at population growth, urbanisation, food production, food waste, genetic modification, climate change, consumption trends and agrobiodiverty as the main influential factors.
Through sourcing and photographing food that is representational of my own data visualisations, the project intends to both challenge and educate consumers about how the future may unfold.’

‘Foods From Pandaria’
Food is a prescription for homesick. 3 years in Melbourne cannot change my taste.
Food in China is diverse. People from the coastal areas love light taste and seafood; people from central China prefer spicy; Muslim from northwest create unique halal food.
I introduce two of my favourite foods in my project: siu mai and xiaolongbao. I use handcraft show these foods. I use a bamboo steamer to place them, so please open them. You also can untie the string of the scrolls to read some introduction about them.

FINAL Narratives
In the end I came back to my initial idea again because I found out the shots for the mooncake making weren't good enough. Although this narratives is slightly longer but at least there are enough materials for me to edit. Again, to bring up the story for my video, it Is about going home. Its really hard to make this dish but going home is also as hard so the process of making the braised pork will be together with some of the travelling scenes such as travelling in car , buses, walking etc.

Compod is a self composting seedling sourced from Worrabinda farm and celebrates the country food culture of the Mallee region. The aim is is portay the closed loop systems that most of the farmers in this area use. This systems means the produce pulled from the earth will eventually be reintroduced as compost; there is no waste. The Compod has been woven from avocado dyed cotton, cardboard string and avocado skin giving the Compod the blend of nitrogen and carbon it needs to break down and fertilise the earth. The logo is made up of symbols typically found in a permaculture design plan and links to the plan of my family farm in the Mallee. These symbols are featured in the swing tag and gives the audience an understanding about the impact that the Compod can make on their lives from planting to sharing the harvest it will yield in the future.
he ritual of planting, harvesting, creating and sharing is rich within the country. This souvenir provides its user the chance to recreate this same ritual in their own backyards.

Studio 1 Comm Design 2017 | food event
Food as creativity, food as friendship
What I enjoyed:
Seeing a lot, A LOT of amazing work, skills, talents, and creativity
How everyone worked so closely with each other
How everyone has gotten so much closer since day one
Last but not least, Andy serving free ice cream :P
The event wasn’t anything big or fancy but think it was a really nice, cozy way to celebrate the end and the success we’ve achieved over the year. Cheers to Andy for being so understanding all the time! and to everyone else in this course: y’all just amazing :)

Work in progress
Decided to do a video about mooncake after a few consultation as the initial narratives idea is too long. The concept remained the same, “going home” its just changing the scene of making braised pork to mooncake.
