When people look at abstract art and go "uh I could make that"
Fuck, I wish you would!
I wish you would let this inspire you. I wish that seeing a piece of abstract art would move you to self expression.
I wish you would go to the craft store, buy a cheap canvas and some cheap paint and let yourself play with color and form just to see if you can.
I wish that there were more amateur painters, trying their hand at geometric abstraction and color field painting. That would be so fucking cool.
"I could make that" should be a joyous revelation, not a snarky dismissal.
You could make that? Holy shit. please. Please make that.

writing tip: searching "[place of origin]ish names" will get you a lot of stuff and nonsense made up by baby bloggers.
searching "[place] census [year]" will get you lists of real names of real people who lived in that place.

Free, non-AI art reference images: Cheetahs!
Yesterday was National Cheetah Day, so I'm a little late to the party, but we can still feast our eyes on (and feed our pens/pencils with) these spotted icons.

something that really sucks about being an artist on the internet in 2024 is that a lot of people don't know how to respond to art anymore. not ALL people, but a noticeable amount of them. they look at a piece of art that you made, that you care about and put time and effort and love into, and they'll say "wow! this is just like [THING YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF]!" or "omg! it's exactly like [THING THAT ONLY HAS SURFACE LEVEL SIMILARITIES AT BEST]!" and i know those people don't have bad intentions. they're trying to say that they liked what you made. but that's not how it comes off. it comes off as reductive. as dismissive. and the worst thing about it is, if they simply ASKED what my inspiration was, then i'd love to tell them. no art is without a muse and we're all impacted by our experiences. my problem with this type of response is the assumption, and oftentimes the insistence that your thing MUST be based on or inspired by this other thing. that they only value your thing BECAUSE they can make some weird connection to something that is, 99% of the time, either unintentional or entirely unrelated. it just hurts. what did you like about my thing? did you like the colors, the composition? did you like how it made you feel? those types of reflections are so much more valuable than "your story/character/etc reminds me of [other story/character/etc]". and i hope you can understand why.

What many may see when you say "waves", versus what I may see when you say "waves":

(wondering what else you default to in your mind? have a whole lesson on breaking that habit!)
Just an example of a hairstyle obtained with a durag and a lot of time and effort!
Tumblr media
If you're wondering how they pulled this particular one off, here:
Even short hairstyles, and hairstyles deemed "masculine", take time and care! When you decide on a hairstyle for your Black characters, take the time to research the maintenance. Not only might it help to make your story more believable and intentional in the small details, but you'll also learn about other people's cultures. There's no loss in education!

Overview of some topics when it comes to drawing characters who are burn survivors.
DISCLAIMER. Please keep in mind that this is an introductory overview for drawing some burn scars and has a lot of generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. I'm calling this introductory because I hope to get people to actually do their own research before drawing disabled & visibly different characters rather than just making stuff up. Think of it as a starting point and take it with a grain of salt (especially if you have a very different art style from mine).
Talking about research and learning... don't make your burn survivor characters evil. Burn survivors are normal people and don't deserve to be constantly portrayed in such a way.
Tumblr media
edit: apparently tum "queerest place on the internet" blr hates disabled people so much that this post got automatically filtered. cool!

So! In looking for more resources on Black hair, I found this amazing, simplified explanation for afros, locs, braids, and twists!! Everyone thank "Daisy E" for their contribution to diversity and inclusion within the art space!
It's far past time to draw our Black characters with our hairstyles and natural hair textures. Please take the time to look, and practice!

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

remember when one of the major advantages of patreon over individual websites was that all the money went in and out at the same time so you just had a monthly 'patreon bill' instead of thirty small transactions a month
and if you were a creator supporting other creators the amount you were paying would automatically get deducted from your payout to make things simpler
remember that

A lil' PSA (and call to action?)
Hey all! From now on, I will be blocking anyone who follows me/interacts with my posts if I suspect they're a bot. If you've been on Tumblr for a while you're probably no stranger to bots, but the reason why I'm making a full-on post is because this situation also involves AI image generation.
This post contains more in-depth information (as well as a juicy block list), but if you'd like to hear it from me: Basically, there's a strand of bot accounts going around, stealing from artists/photographers and slapping an AI filter onto their works to make it seem like the AI generated it.
Don't believe me? I did my own look-around of these accounts and noticed that they sometimes include really specific tags on their AI posts, like the kind of tags an artist would leave behind has a comment on their work. I decided to search the tags of 2 posts and found multiple bots stealing from one artist. In both images below, the original artist is the one on the left
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you still don't believe me or want to see more examples, the account @ai-art-thieves has been doing a lot of callouts lately of these kinds of accounts.
As for what you can do, I advise you to be a bit weary about the accounts that follow you or reblog your posts. So far, all of the bots have a predictable naming scheme + look to them that's seen in both the post I linked as well as my screenshots. If you see these things in the wild, please report and block them!

It's Time To Investigate SevenArt.ai
sevenart.ai is a website that uses ai to generate images.
Except, that's not all it can do.
It can also overlay ai filters onto images to create the illusion that the algorithm created these images.
And its primary image source is Tumblr.
It scrapes through the site for recent images that are at least 10 days old and has some notes attached to it, as well as copying the tags to make the unsuspecting user think that the post was from a genuine user.
No image is safe. Art, photography, screenshots, you name it.
Initially I thought that these are bots that just repost images from their site as well as bastardizations of pictures across tumblr, until a user by the name of @nataliedecorsair discovered that these "bots" can also block users and restrict replies.
Not only that, but these bots do not procreate and multiply like most bots do. Or at least, they have.
The following are the list of bots that have been found on this very site. Brace yourself. It's gonna be a long one:

The oldest ones have been created in March, started scraping in June/July, and later additions to the family have been created in July.
So, I have come to the conclusion that these accounts might be run by a combination of bot and human. Cyborg, if you will.
But it still doesn't answer my main question:
Who is running the whole operation?
The site itself gave us zero answers to work with.
Tumblr media
No copyright, no link to the engine where the site is being used on, except for the sign in thingy (which I did.)
Tumblr media
I gave the site a fake email and a shitty password.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Turns out it doesn't function like most sites that ask for an email and password.
Didn't check the burner email, the password isn't fully dotted and available for the whole world to see, and, and this is the important thing...
My browser didn't detect that this was an email and password thingy.
Tumblr media
And there was no log off feature.
This could mean two things.
Either we have a site that doesn't have a functioning email and password database, or that we have a bunch of gullible people throwing their email and password in for people to potentially steal.
I can't confirm or deny these facts, because, again, the site has little to work with.
The code? Generic as all hell.
Tumblr media
Tried searching for more information about this site, like the server it's on, or who owned the site, or something. ANYTHING.
Multiple sites pulled me in different directions. One site said it originates in Iceland. Others say its in California or Canada.
Luckily, the server it used was the same. Its powered by Cloudflare.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what to do with any of this information.
If you have any further information about this site, let me know.
Until there is a clear answer, we need to keep doing what we are doing.
Spread the word and report about these cretins.
If they want attention, then they are gonna get the worst attention.
