Treasure Planet really bothered me because the humans and funny animals were all good people, the insectoid alien that looked evil and inhuman was a bad guy, and the fat cyborg (still human bit with some “unsightly” elements) was somewhere in-between. Morality and appearance were so highly correlated. This trope bothered me even more than when the cast is all human because A) the idea where entire species of sentients are condemned for being ugly and B) I like bugs.

I sometimes see people post popular characters and gush over how you can tell their entire personality from their design. They call that good character design. I think it’s BAD character design! You CAN’T tell all about somebody from how they look! Visual shorthands for personality and *especially* morality are bad!

Mirio is the kind of person who loves being domestic in every way as soon as you start dating. He doesn't rush you to move in or anything, he just is a domestic guy. You both have lots of cooking nights. He loves to just prop his feet up in your lap and read with you. He loves to go on grocery shopping dates. Well, third-year Tenya, eh? Isn't that picture drool-worthy. Ahem.

So I think Tenya as a whole doesn't entirely grasp the concept of flirting. I'm not entirely sure he could anything subtly at this point, but that's part of the reason why we love him so damn much.

But he would certainly try, especially if he has had his eye on this certain someone for a while and he is fully and well aware of his romantic feelings toward them. While I believe he would go to his friends for advice on possible ways to capture the attention of his love, ultimately he'd want to figure out what compliment and such makes them tick himself. He's a natural-born knowledge seeker and he's already proven to be an effective problem solver.

That being said, I can picture him saying things like...

Whenever his love walks into the classroom, he immediately gets up from his desk. No matter what he is doing. He could be sitting there reading a book, talking to his friends. BUT all his attention goes to his love when they walk into the room. This boy will stand straight up, hand raised and chopping through the air as he proceeds to ramble. "Good morning Y/n! I do believe it's quite lovely out, would you not agree? I see once again there is no presence of wrinkles in your uniform! One must present themselves in neat and tidy order and I do believe you are successful," they just look at him like he's nuts.

Then during training, he'll attempt to cheer them on or give them compliments. When it's their turn to participate even though he'll secretly be wishing he could have been on their team. He'll race ahead of them before they can reach the training ground. Slightly startle them where he'll then apologize and proceed to wish them good luck. He'll reach over, shyly touching their shoulder. "I...I do believe it is a practice of good faith and confidence if people wish one another good luck before proceeding to perform in whatever activity of their choosing," he'll clear his throat. A soft flush coming to his face. "So...I do believe I am...wishing you good luck. I have no doubts in your abilities nor the fact you know when to use them effectively and to the best of your advantage!" he'll smile at them but the reader will just brush it off as Tenya being...Tenya.

Other than that, he'd do cute things like offering them his seat. Doesn't matter if it's in the dorm building or on the bus or shopping mall. "If I may, I insist you take my seat. Please do not worry, I am quite certain I prefer to stand." I can see whenever they finish eating Tenya always offers to take their plate for them, he'll even go as far as to wipe their face with a napkin but only under the false pretense that he wants the student's of Class A to look presentable no matter what time of day. He'll always try to make an excuse to talk to them or noticeable treat them differently than he does others.

Fave Fights: Matsumoto vs. Reigai Kira (Bleach e322)

Once I was trading anime recs with a friend and she said, very quickly, that she and her partner weren’t into “fight of the week” anime. It was a kind way of saying “please don’t bring up that Bleach shit I know you like because I don’t want to have to decline directly,” but 1) pls I would never rec anyone anything that ungodly long, and 2) BOLD OF HER TO ASSUME ANY FIGHT WOULD WRAP UP IN A SINGLE WEEK.

But I love Bleach fights! I mean, you kind of have to, given that the series format is a sequence of extended fights through which you learn about these characters and their relationships to each other/themselves/their swords/their world. This one is a little different, in that there isn’t necessarily a lot of character-building being done here. It’s not moving Matsumoto and Kira’s relationship in any particular direction. Reigai Kira is bad at being Kira; ergo, the emotional stakes for Matsumoto aren’t high here–just the survival stakes.

But we do get to learn about what kind of fighters Matsumoto and (reigai) Kira are–two characters who don’t get a lot of fighting screen time otherwise, and it’s a tidy three minutes of tactical beauty. 

I LOVE how critically the environment factors into this fight–the construction site isn’t just for the aesthetic! It’s full of things to make heavier, pulling buildings and unfinished frames down, felling beams 10 their original already-hefty weight. Wabisuke is an industrial engineer’s worst nightmare, lolol. Since most Bleach fights happen up in the air somewhere for “but what if we didn’t destroy this stuff” reasons, the environment doesn’t factor into the fights that often, which is a shame because I am a major simp for terrain bonus. This fight is a goldmine!

And I love Matsumoto’s tactics here, thinking quickly to use Wabisuke’s power against it. She was definitely counting on reigai Kira only seeing the bright pink scarf and forgetting about the rod it had been stuck on, which is a big butterfly move, haha (it always comes back to butterflies). And then to let the rod fall and tether Wabisuke to the ground? What a baller move. And I have to wonder like, how she knew (or hoped) Wabisuke wouldn’t be able to simply slice through that steel rod. I’m sure many zanpakutou could. Is it just the non-ideal angle of attack? Did she and real Kira have a heart to heart about their swords after the SS arc, as a way of renewing their trust in each other in the wake of Ichimaru’s defection? 🥺
