“As a graphic designer and visual artist, I work with many clients from large national brands to single proprietors, who have conceptual ideas of their brands and need someone to tell a cohesive story about them through visual strategic design.”

Behold the extra awesomeness of a beautiful deep-sea jellyfish that looks like a flying saucer. This underwater UFO (USO?) was recently spotted by the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer during a research dive at the Utu Seamount in the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa in the South Pacific.
youtube
According to NOAA zoologist Allen Collins, this jelly is a Rhopalonematid trachymedusa. These animals are primarily found in the deep ocean, and are identifiable by their umbrella-like appearance.
As noted by the biologists in the video, the translucent creature’s reproductive organs can be seen in bright yellow, and its digestive system appears in red. It’s not immediately obvious why this jelly features two types of tentacles—one set that faces up and another that faces down. It’s possible this configuration helps it to snatch its prey.

The latest designer beer stein project created by Portland, OR-based company Münkstein (previously featured here) combines the pleasure of quaffing with the soul-shattering discomfort of cosmic dread. That’s right, it’s the Cthulhu Stein and it’s terrifyingly awesome. The tentacular design for the stein is based on a Cthulhu print by Oakland, CA-based artist Skinner (previously featured here):

The Cthulhu Stein is Münkstein’s first creation to be produced without the aid of a Kickstarter campaign. Instead the 1-liter stein is available for a 3-month pre-order period directly though the Münkstein webstore.
The Cthulhu stein is being produced in a gloriously nightmarish Full Color version and a more traditional, but still hair-raising blue and white Dynamic Wash version, both with a fantastic silver lid featuring Dread Cthulhu himself. Both versions are also available as mugs, which simply means no silver Great Old One watching you quaff. But don’t go thinking that’ll put you in his good graces. He has no good graces. Cthulhu fhtagn.
Head over to the Münkstein website for additional info.

The vampire squid is neither a vampire, nor a squid.
Its Latin name translates as “the vampire squid from hell.” And while its crimson skin and glowing eyes support its title, deep sea ecologists like Bruce Robison of the montereybayaquarium Research Institute have come to see the vampire squid as the antithesis of a bloodsucking predator. In fact, studies have shown that Vampyroteuthis infernalis is actually a gentle steward of the ocean’s depths, gracefully foraging on marine detritus.
