[19:45] ‘I am strong, I can do this’ you hissed under your breath. No matter how hard you tried you could not get the lid off the jar of olives in your hands. ‘I am a strong independent woman, I AM SHE HULK’ you almost screamed through gritted teeth, but you again felt the lid slide through your hands. You almost felt like crying, you were 5 months into your pregnancy and olives were like your kryptonite, you constantly craved them and right now this stupid lid wouldn’t budge.
Before you could launch the olives across the room in a fit of rage, you felt a strong presence behind you and a pair of arms reach over you and pop the lid effortlessly off the jar. ‘Better’ your husband Mingyu sung in your ear, ‘I loosened it for you’ you giggled back. His hands slowly dropped down to your bump as he rubbed circles against your stomach. ‘You know I was thinking, if the baby is a girl, we should call her Olive’ Mingyu said nuzzling his nose into your neck. ‘You know what’ you smiled, turning around and pressing a loving kiss to his lips, ‘I really like the sound of that’.

Everyone knew San, it was hard not to. All throughout school he was popular, his good looks and awful attitude attracted people to him. He had the typical bad boy stereotype that lured people in, allowing him to get whatever he wanted with one look.
He carried that aura into university with him, no longer being popular but becoming someone to avoid. Students heard stories about him; how he’d been arrested many times, how he apparently joined a local gang in the city, how he slept through the entire university. Not all of it was true.
San was part of a gang, a widespread one across the whole country. He didn’t choose it, he was born into it. But he took it in his stride, working his way up quickly after his father passed to become one of the top ranking members. He remained in university as a way of keeping some normalcy in his life, not wanting to get caught up in this lifestyle he’d been thrusted into without at least experiencing things that regular young adults did. He wanted to go out, drink, have fun.
And he did, but not once did he bring someone home. He easily could if he wanted to, there was hundreds of people throwing themselves at his feet, but he shrugged them off every time. He wasn’t interested in them, only one person had ever crossed his mind.
“I’m not fucking interested,” he spat, knocking the glass of liquor out of some girls hand. “How many times do I have to say that before you get it through your thick skull?”
“You’re a real asshole Choi San,” she replied, trying to wipe off some of the sticky liquid from her dress. “Maybe if you loosened up a bit and got your dick wet you’d stop being so fucking insufferable.”
With that she turned away, making her way through the crowd to find someone else to dance with. This was usual for San, instead of reacting he just turned back to his friends to try and enjoy his night. They all gave him a look, the signal for ‘we can kill her if you want us to’. They were all each other’s ride or dies.
The eight boys were always together, wherever San was they followed. You assumed they were a part of ATEEZ, the gang San was linked with, and steered clear. They would hang around the university, some of them enrolled and others just there to observe. If you didn’t know better then you would assume they were just normal students. That was until you caught glimpse of the handle to a pistol peeking out under one of their shirts.
You had been leaving class one day, your books clutched tightly in one hand after your trip to the library earlier. You’d been waiting for these textbooks to be back in and finally you got an email alerting you, prompting you to rush out of your flat to the library at eight in the morning. As you touched down on the bottom step, your eyes cast downwards towards your shoes, you collided with someone’s back, books spilling from your arms and onto the floor around you. It felt so cliché, you wanted nothing more than to curl up and cry.
“Watch where the fuck you’re going,” a voice said, your eyes following it up to meet their face. There stood Hongjoong, one of San’s friends, hands in his pockets as he glared down at you.
“I’m so sorry,” you mumbled, collecting as many books as you could in your hands. “I was distracted, I hope I didn’t hurt you.”
You reached for the last book, stopping when you noticed he was standing on the cover, his trainers pressing a muddy print onto the paper. Tears welled up in your eyes and you felt pathetic, he was ruining a book that wasn’t even yours but you still wanted to cry.
“Knock it off Joong,” another voice cut in. You didn’t dare look up, not wanting to get involved with the boys any more than you already were. Hongjoong’s foot left your book and you went to grab it, narrowly missing it as another person snatched it up.
You went to protest, words dying in your throat as you looked up to the person the hand belonged to. Those hands, your muddy copy of Advanced Finance Version Seven clutched between his fingers, belonged to Choi San. How fucking lucky were you? Note the saracasm.
“I’m sorry,” you repeated weakly. “I didn’t mean to bump into him I swear, I’m so sorry.”
You rambled on, not noticing the fact that San had shooed the other boys away so that it was only the two of you standing by the stairs. He frowned at your apologies, he wanted to put a smile on your pretty face instead.
“Stop apologising,” he said suddenly, making your mouth snap shut. You looked up at him with wide eyes, trying to gauge his reactions. “I’m not going to hurt you Y/N, just wanted to make sure you’re ok.”
You blinked, once, twice, trying to understand what he was saying.
“How do you know my name?” You replied after a few seconds, you’d been in high school with San but never once had you talked. He was a year above you, you never crossed paths.
“We went to school together pretty, of course I know your name,” he said, his hand stretched out to give you the book and you took is gently from him. “You need a hand carrying those home?”
Was this really San that was talking to you? Surely he was going to knock your belongings out of your arms any moment and start laughing at you, pushing you away for bumping into his friend.
You clutched your books tightly to your chest, “why are you being nice to me?” You wondered out loud, eyes widening when you realised you’d spoken your thoughts. San chuckled, instead opting to tug most of the books from your arms and stack them neatly in his hands.
“I’m not a bad guy Y/N,” he said, starting to walk off in the direction you had been headed. You ran a little to catch up, falling into step beside him and staring up at his side profile. His black hair had recently been cut shorter, not that you had been noticing him, and it showed off his new eyebrow piercing perfectly. How was it possible for him to have grown more attractive over the years?
“Well, you kind of are San,” you said quietly, making him quirk and eyebrow at you. “You’re always beating people up and doing things you shouldn’t, doesn’t seem good to me.”
“Have I ever done anything to you?” He asked simply, still walking forwards and not paying much mind to how you had to walk twice as fast as him to keep up.
“Well no, but-” he cut you off before you could protest.
“Exactly, maybe I’m a shitty person. But only to those who deserve it, I wouldn’t hurt just anyone. I’d never hurt you,” his voice was softer now, you were nearing your apartment building and you hadn’t even realised San knew where you lived. “I mean that Y/N, I’ll never do anything to hurt you. And I wouldn’t let anyone else either.”
He turned to face you as you stood outside the front door of the building, he held the books forward and you took them, mind reeling at his words. He hardly knew you, why would he promise something like that.
“Get inside pretty, it’s starting to get cold,” he sighed, tucking his own hands into his pockets as he turned away. You cursed him for making you feel guilty.
“Wait San!” You called out, “I’m sorry for accusing you of stuff, it’s just, there’s so many rumours and I’m scared of getting caught up in something I can’t handle.”
San’s eyes were wide as he watched you, flickering his gaze to where your bottom lip was tucked between your teeth. He reached forward, gently tugging it free and rubbing over the skin. You didn’t move back, enjoying the warmth of his hand on your cheek as he held it there for a few seconds longer than he needed to. When he pulled away you felt colder than before, a small frown forming.
“I promise Y/N, you will never have to worry about a thing. I won’t let anything happen to you, you can trust me on that,” he sighed and moved his hands back to his pockets. “I’ll see you around, ok?”
And before you could thank him he was already gone.
