Hydraulic cylinders are actuators which are used to enable linear movements in machines. The automotive hydraulic cylinders are used in automotive devices like municipality garbage vans, agricultural instruments, dump trucks, tow trucks, tractors and cranes. The various applications of automotive hydraulic cylinders are sky lifts, car carriers and damper placers. The bore of automotive hydraulic cylinders is in the range of 40 mm to 150 mm. The stroke of automotive hydraulic cylinders is large.  The range of stroke length is 3000 mm to 4500 mm. One kind of automotive hydraulic cylinder that is used in municipality garbage trucks is the tipping cylinder. These kinds of cylinders are used for the purpose of lifting heavy weight of the tailgate of the truck and tilt it in order to dispose the contents onto the ground. Tipping cylinders are, in general, like the telescopic hydraulic cylinders.

Tipping cylinders can be used either as the under body tipping cylinders or the front end tipping cylinders. The under body tipping cylinders are the cylinders which contract to a very small length when the tailgate is not tipped. The rod end of this type of tipping cylinder is attached to the bottom of the tailgate. The front end tipping cylinders are also telescopic in nature. But these are longer than the under body tipping cylinders when fully contracted. The rod end of the front end tipping cylinders is generally attached to the front end of the tailgate of the truck. There are two types of tipping cylinders or automotive cylinders in terms of the mechanism of working of the cylinders. They are: two stage hydraulic cylinders mufti two stage hydraulic cylinders.

The power pack is a part of the machine that generates energy and converts the generated energy into the form that is useful for the functioning of the machine. In general, power packs are regarded as the ‘generator’ part of the machine that generates energy required for working of the actuator or the motor part of the machine. This fluid power is used in performing works like moving of pistons (like in a linear actuator) and lifting weights. An important characteristic of industrial power packs is durability and the ability to work for long hours.

Two types of power packs are available. They are: DC power packs and AC power packs. The DC power packs, also known as compact power packs, run on direct electric current. The AC power packs are generally used for heavy load works like lifting of cars, dock leveling, etc. The general capacity of hydraulic AC power pack is 1HP and the general flow rate of the fluid (working substance) out from the reservoir is 300 liters per minute.
