Weekend
I saw Weekend at the local Cinema as part of LGBT Awareness Month. The guys who organised it wanted to highlight specific awareness of Homophobia in Sports. But there aren’t any films really about that specific issue. So instead, they showed this nice little story about a romance involving two men taking place over a weekend. Thus, already, the title is pretty apt.
First thing I noticed about this film was the camera. The camera was always interesting. I could just sit and watch the scenery it was pointing at. It was just startlingly beautiful. The colours were muted but also vibrant and just lovely. It never really occurred to me that Nottingham (where the film takes place) could be seen as beautiful, but the camera really captures the simplicity of the area, the way light falls upon ever crevice and suddenly, it all becomes art in itself. Then the camera focuses on the characters and it rarely moves at all in these scenarios. That really worked because it allowed you to focus on the conversations taking place.
I hate close ups. I hate cameras that don’t allow you to see real interaction between characters but instead only allow you to see reaction faces. This was not the case in this film. You were always aware of how Glen (Chris New) and Russell (Tom Cullen) were interacting with one another, not just through what they were saying but also their body language.
Straight off you can tell that Russell is the more withdrawn of the pair. He is constantly second guessing every single little action. He’s scared of being revealed and it really comes across in his actions with people in the first house party and also later on when you see him at work or even on the bus. Glen is out there and proud of who he is, even if there is a sense of bravado about his actions he still wants the world to accept him for who he is. The pair have contrasting views on homosexuality as well. Whereas Russell would just love to fit in, be in a relationship and just settle down into normality, Glen is more interested in really expanding the gay culture and what it means, this means no relationships and not giving a fuck what anyone thinks about that.
So let’s get down to the main point here. The whole film rests on the believability of these two men falling in love over an incredibly short period of time. The relationship is the crux upon which the story must lie, no fancy camera work can distract you from that, if it doesn’t work then neither does the film.
Thankfully the actors were more than capable at portraying the passion but also understanding of the relationship. The most erotic thing about the whole film though, excluding the sex scenes, was their openness. The fact that in a very short amount of time they were able to be completely vulnerable with one another; even if they didn’t understand each others view points they wanted to and they liked each others company. Most importantly, they found each other fascinating. As a viewer you may be seeing a trope in action but it doesn’t feel like that. It felt sincere, honest and felt. Tom Cullen encapsulated the loving and tender side to Russell with a lovely effect, Chris New also did well at portraying the faux swagger his character presented with the broken man beneath. It was a tour de force for both actors and I cannot wait to see them in more films.
As a whole. I really enjoyed the film. I’m not a romantic so I didn’t really feel the connection the couple did but I felt the ending. Since I’m not a real reviewer I can happily say I felt a lone tear betray me at the end. It was a beautiful film and it relayed the ideas of homosexuality, albeit briefly. But what really made the film was the central relationship. It was a love story and I felt every second of it.

Glen: Why don’t I pretend to be your dad and you can come out to me? Russell: [laughs] That is SO weird. Glen: Just ignore the fact we just had sex. Russell: I don’t think I can. Guess I’ll try. Okay.
