7th -9th December 2020. ABOUT MY PROJECT.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
For this project I have been inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol, Ruben Ireland, Damien Hirst and Wassily Kandinsky. These artists have inspired me for this project because they have all used bold bright colours in their work. I have mainly been inspired by Andy Warhol’s ‘Marilyn Diptych’ prints due to the bold flat colours that got used. If you put both of Andy Warhol prints next to my final pieces you will see the inspiration, but my work has more character to it due to there being more highlights and textures. Andy Warhol’s work has also inspired my work due to how different his prints are compared to other people’s artwork. When you see an Andy Warhol piece of work you know it is his due to unique the style of his work. I have tried to put more meaning behind my portraits with the brush strokes and materials that got used. All the things these artists all have in common are they all use bright colours and nearly all of them do portrait work. They all have a different style which makes the artwork more unique as it makes them more interesting to look at.
I decided to do portraits for this project because that is what everyone in the group ‘Unexpected Joy’ could work with. I find that portraits have so much meaning behind them due to it being a very old art form. Before photography was a form of capturing portraits of people creating portraits was only through painting, drawing and sculptures due to there not being any technology back when portraits were invented. With a portrait you can capture someone’s story and someone’s identity through a drawing and painting as you will be capturing the raw emotion. Also, you will be capturing the raw image of the human body and what that human body has been through to survive. Most of the time portraits capture the dark side to someone’s life and the happy side due to the scars that get shown. Portraits can also be referred to places and landscapes. It does not always have to be the human figure. These artists that did portrait work that have also inspired me for this project are Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and Leonardo De Vinci. These portrait artists inspired me because they mainly did self-portraits. Self-portraits is not something that I did for this project due to wanting to capture the people that work in the Queensgate Market instead. Self portraits are something that I am going to be thinking about doing for the next module.
I choose to do paintings instead of doing a portrait out of any other techniques/ materials due to capturing the image better with paintings due to the colours that get used. Paintings are a way of getting all your emotions down on a piece of people and all your ideas as well. Most people want to express their raw emotions and translate that language into a work of art. It all depends on the shapes, colours and textures that get used in the paintings. For example, when you use dark colours and have rough shapes and textures many people will assume that your painting is very upsetting compared to when you use bright colours and have hardly any textures at all.
For the exhibition we was all going to do it with Temporary Contemporary in the Queensgate market in Huddersfield but that all ended up changing due to COVID-19 and it all having to be digital. My project changed due to not being able to hang my paintings on the wall in the exhibition myself and talk to people regarding my work because of the virus.
From the very first blog post that I did on the 7th October 2020 my project has changed dramatically. I originally wanted to go down the Christmas markets in Huddersfield and the people in the Christmas markets by drawing portraits of them but that changed due to the sircumstances that we are all living through right now.

1st - 2nd December 2020. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
On the 1st December 2020 Unexpected Joy had a video call regarding what it that we were all doing for the summative assessment. This video call was a run through for all of us as a group regarding the summative assessment that was on the 2nd December, so everyone knew what they were saying and when they were meant to speak. For this video call we all did our own scripts for everything that we had to say in the presentation for the assessment so then it was easier for us all as no one wanted to forget any important things that needed to be said. For this script I had to mention everything from being inspired by the Pop Art movement to using some of the colours that was in the groups colour palette. In my script I also spoke about the reasons as to why I choose them two photos of Jessies. I chose these two photographs because both photos are telling a story, and both have a strong meaning behind them. One is smiling through the difficult time and the other is protecting herself and everyone else from the virus as she is wearing a mask. Both photos show the different age ranges you get in the market. Throughout this project I have been developing my watercolour paintings as that was one of the feedbacks that I got. For my two A1 canvas portrait pieces I got inspired by the pop art movement. For these pieces I used the tube watercolour paints. I have been finding it difficult to paint men, but the watercolour paints have made it easier as they are easier to blend. I have found this project very challenging due to not really painting men very often as I do with painting women.
On the 2nd December 2020 Unexpected Joy had our presentation for the summative assessment. I think the presentation went well as everyone said everything that they needed to talk about. I also think the group presentation could have been better due to their being way too much information that was being spoken about. I found that the tutors did not really get to see everyone’s individual final pieces of work properly due to them talking about what ‘Unexpected Joy’ is. I wanted the tutors to see everyone’s work properly and the processes that everyone did to get to their final pieces for their final project. We received some feedback for the presentation regarding where we all go from here like where you go with the work that has already been created in the group. Also, in the feedback at the end when the group presentation was done Simon said that he should have done a tutorial for all the painters. I think I would have benefitted from that tutorial because I am wanting to better my painting skills. I am wanting to do more work on the blending and the facial features because I am wanting my portraits to look quite realistic to what they actually look like now.

17th - 24th November 2020. FINAL PIECES.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
These are my two final pieces for this group project. For my two final pieces I decided that I wanted to carry on referencing off Jessie’s photographs. I chose these two photographs for my final project because one of them there is a smile and the other one there is a face mask. I also chose these two photographs because it shows the different age range of visitors that you end up seeing in the Huddersfield Queensgate Market when you visit it. The age range in the market ranges from students due to The University of Huddersfield all the way to the older generation. I think these two photos represent what is going on in the Queensgate Market right now and the rest of the world. Trying to stay positive especially in the strange times that we are all currently living in. I chose the first one because I like how there is still a smile on the man’s face even with what the world is currently going through right now. I like how the smile tells a story. The story could mean that the man is smiling through the pain or just smiling because he is doing a job that he loves in a place that he loves. I liked the strong meanings behind these two photographs because they show that everyone is still trying to live their lives as much as they can. Even with face masks on they are still protecting not only themselves but everyone that is around them. I like how they are still working for the people that need their essential stuff such as food.
For this project I have been inspired by the Pop Art movement due to all the bright bold colours that got used. For my final project I ended up painting with watercolour paints that are in tubes called ‘Daler Rowney’ simply watercolour paints. I ended up using watercolour paints for my final project because I was on the look out for some bold colours that I could blend easier than acrylic paints. Another reason why I used watercolour paints was due to the feedback that I received from the groups formative assessment that we all did on the 11th November 2020. I wanted to use paints that was just as bold as acrylics but was like watercolours. I have found that the Daler Rowney watercolours are so much better than the watercolours that you get in a metal palette. I liked how easier the blending of the colours was especially on the textured canvas background. I ended up doing my final pieces on canvas due to wanting to bring the textures into the portraits. The textures and the paint brush marks can represent the year 2020 has been for everyone. The rough texture shows that no matter what life throws at you all you need to do is carry on no matter how hard that is. I made sure I used some of the colours on the colour chart but did not really use any for the skin tones due to the colours not representing the photographs well. On the background on my final two pieces I chose a colour from the groups colour chart that worked for both the final pieces which was a burnt orange colour. I ended up using a plastic knife for the background colour as well.

12th - 19th November 2020. DEVELOPMENT WORK.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
Here are the rest of my development work. For these development works I took on board the feedback that I got given for the formative assessment that we all did as a group presentation on the 11th November 2020. Some of the feedback that I got was from Simon. The feedback said “Tegan – Illustration line and watercolours would benefit from more development”.
After getting this feedback I started to use more watercolour paints in my rough pieces of work that I created in my sketchbook for this project. I was not sure about that specific feedback due to forming my own opinion on watercolour paints after using them paints for so many years. I personally think that they look very dull due to the lack of brightness the colours have. In my opinion other paints such as oil paints and acrylic paints stand out more and become a lot more eye catching when people look at the piece of artwork. Having to build the colours up without trying to ruin your work at the same time due to all the water that gets used. The one thing watercolours are good for are blending the colours well other than it just be so many uneven lines. Using watercolours for blending is a good thing especially if you are creating portraits which ‘Unexpected Joy’ are. As for this project I am getting massively inspired by the Pop Art movement I was very unsure whether to use watercolours or not. After getting that feedback I ended up doing some research about watercolours and I ended up finding actual watercolour paints that are in tubes rather than them being in a metal palette. I personally think the actual watercolour paints that are in tubes are so much better than the ones you get in them metal palettes. This is because the colours are so much brighter, and you do not need to layer the colours to get the colour that you want to create. The watercolours in the tubes the colours are so much bolder which is what I am aiming for with my final pieces. The blending of the paints is so much easier as well especially if you are doing portraits of people you want to be able to get their skin tone and everything nearly correct.
The other bit of the feedback regarding the illustration lines. The pieces of work that got shown was very rough development work. The line work for these pieces were not to the very best standard that they should have been. I did not do the line work very well for them specific pieces because I was wanting to get the face proportions all right. For this project I have been finding it very challenging to paint/ draw men as I never really paint/ draw them. I mainly paint/ draw women as I think that it is so much easier to get the face proportions right. I have taken this feedback on board and I have worked with not using as much of a dark colour as black is that I would normally use. I have ended up using browns as I think they suit and blend more when you are painting a portrait. Especially when you are painting a face you do not want there to be any dark harsh lines. You want the face to look all blended and smooth to look at. For my final pieces I am going to aim for no harsh lines.

2nd - 11th November 2020. DEVELOPMENT WORK AND FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
For the past couple of mouths our group that is called ‘Unexpected Joy’ has been on MS Teams a couple of times a week to discuss what we want to do for this group project. In the MS Teams meetings we've been discussing what is next for ‘Unexpected Joy’. We have mainly been talking about what everyone in the group can create and do with regarding their specialist subject matter. For my specialist subject matter I'm doing illustration and for this project I've been referencing Jessie's photography work for my painted portraits. We've all been discussing what it is we all want our final pieces to be. One of the first ideas that we all agreed to doing was a map idea. The map idea was everyone's different portraits that we all end up designing will be all linked together through a map of the Queensgate Market. We didn't end up doing that idea because it wouldn't of fit with everyone's pieces of work as everyone in the group are doing specific subjects. Some are graphic designers, photographers, illustrators and many other subjects matters. We as a group are all carrying on in producing portraits.
This is my recent portrait that is a reference to one of Jessie's photographers. For this portrait I ended up using acrylic paints. I used acrylic paints because I think acrylic paints are more bolder and brighter than watercolour paints. For my portraits I'm being inspired by the pop art movement and watercolours don't really have the same value of bold statement colours like acrylic paints do. My aim for this project is to make my portraits as bright and as colourful as possible so then it brings a little bit of happiness and joy for the people that end up seeing my work. When your work is more bright and colourful it makes people want to look at it more. I've recently for this project been referencing portraits of men. With my paintings I don't usually paint men especially for my personal work. I find it is more easier to paint women as I find painting men is more complicating. I've recently been out of my comfort zone and trying new things by painting portraits of men.
Yesterday, on the 11th November 2020 our group ‘Unexpected Joy’ had our first formative assessment and we all had to present our presentation of the work that we have all done so far for this group project to the tutors and everyone else. The presentation went really well but it could have been a little bit better. Some of the feedback that the group had got from the tutors was 'What is unexpected Joy?’ What has Unexpected Joy got in relation to portraits?. Unexpected Joy is work that everyone in the group has created and that work ends up bringing joy to so many people especially in the awful time that we are all currently living in due to COVID 19. Unexpected Joy relates to portraits because the people in the Queensgate market are the ones that are bringing joy to so many people's lives that are walking through the Queensgate Markets doors. I've been told carry on creating portraits with watercolours but making sure I don't put any lines in my paintings as the portraits need to look more finished.
2nd November 2020. Unexpected Joy had another video call but this time we was all going through the formative assessment ready for 4th when our actual formative assessment happened.
4th - 9th November 2020. Unexpected Joy had a group video call about our summative assessment and the presentation.

26th - 29th October 2020. DEVELOPMENT WORK AND ON UNIVERSITY CAMPUS.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ - TMA1402 module.
For the past few weeks we have had our online lessons on a Wednesday and had many group tutorials that spoke about this group project. In the group project we talked about what can we do to make people seem more happier when they end up visiting the Queensgate market? What can we do to make the Queensgate market more appealing to attract more customers especially with the place that we are all in right now due to COVID 19.
On the 21st October 2020. Unexpected Joy had another video call talking about the exhibition spaces and the Queensgate Market.
Yesterday the 28th October we all had a day back at University of Huddersfield for the first time since the COVID pandemic back in March 2020. While doing workshops with Sara on After Affects and looking at the spaces in the Queensgate market for an art exhibition later on in the year. Started painting portraits of the people that the photographers in our group took on their cameras. In this project the people in Huddersfield are the main part of the module due to what COVID 19 has done to there lives and there jobs. The people are what make Huddersfield the town that it is. Without the people they wouldn't be anything in the town. At the moment it's a very sensitive topic for so many people as so many people have lost there jobs due to COVID or have lost a person close to them because of the global pandemic. This photo here on the university campus of majority of the 'Unexpected Joy' group is what Ryan took on his phone.
Here is my After Affects logo that I did in Sara's workshop on on Adobe Photoshop at the University of Huddersfield campus on the 28th October 2020.
I decided that I wanted to carry on with creating portraits because I'm wanting to develop my painting skills and techniques. I'm wanting to better myself with the paintings that I create. The materials that I will be using are acrylic paints and watercolours. Acrylic paints for the final major project due to the bold vibrant colours and watercolours just for experiment work in sketchbook as I think watercolours are more easier to blend than acrylic paints are. The portraits will be very bold and vibrant due to bringing some joy into so many people's days when they walk through the Queensgate market and see the pieces of art on the plain white/ grey walls. Bright colours make people more happier than dark colours. The bright colours will stand out which will make some people want to look at the work in more detail. For this project I'm getting inspired by the pop art movement pieces of work due to what they did back in the pop art movement days. In the pop art movement days they created a piece of art work that had a very dark meaning behind it but the bright colours that they ended up using put the art in a whole new perspective. It made you think of the things that they are actually showing in the artwork but made you think of the positive outcome with the bold bright colours. I think that the pop art style for this project is a good idea because it's very in your face and eye catching. The pop art movement also brought people into their pieces of work which makes the art have more meaning behind them.
Some rough sketches of portraits out of marker pen For this portrait I used Jessie's photo for a reference. I chose that photo of the man because he was smiling even with everything that's going on. He still has something to be grateful for. I chose the light soft colours because I wanted his smile to stand out of the painting more than the colours do.

5th - 13th October 2020. RESEARCH.
'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship - TMA1402 module.
I started researching about Huddersfield, the history of Huddersfield and the Queensgate Market.I started researching these topic because I wanted to have a better understanding of what Huddersfield is and what Huddersfield town has to offer. Huddersfield has some very historical land marks which include the Huddersfield Town Hall, the Huddersfield Train Station and the Huddersfield Library and Art Gallery. I mainly researched about the Queensgate Market because I wanted to know more about the building it's self and what it means to the community of Huddersfield. In the past I studied BA Illustration at The University of Huddersfield and in the second year we ended up having an art exhibition in the Queensgate Market I didn't know anything about the history of the market and the building when my BA work was up on the wall in the market. I'm researching about the market so then I know what to expect for my MA exhibition.
When I was researching about the Queensgate Market I came across that it was built in the year 1959 by J Seymour Harris Partnership 1968 -70. The market was a grade 2 by a man called Christopher Marsden. This just shows the Queensgate Market has made Huddersfield the town that it is. The market is like the heart of every town centre because many people will go there just to buy stuff that you can't really buy online. The market is a community full of people that are making a living off helping people buy things that they will need for everyday life such as fruit and veg stalls, sweet stalls, DIY stalls and clothing stalls. Many people will prefer buying stuff in person to buying stuff online due to actually knowing what it is that you're paying for. The market is a place which brings people together especially the older generation. It's somewhere they can go to so they don't feel like they are alone. This is a place where they will be feeling comfortable in as it will get them out more and get them to talk to other people instead of feeling a sense of loneliness.
Outside the Queensgate Market there is a very unique architecture design on the outside of the building. The unique architecture was designed by someone called Gwyn Roberts 1936-2004. They was the project architect. The aim that they wanted to achieve from this unique design was to make the building look more interesting and appealing to the eye. When a building looks interesting because they have some pieces of artwork on the outside of them are more likely to attract more people to go inside to have a look and see what the place has to offer. When the building is more appealing to the eye there will be more likely more customers for the people that work in the market which is also helping with the community. When you buy from a local business you're helping them to make a living. Right now, it's crucial to shop at your local businesses due to the global pandemic that we had back in March it will be more difficult for them to make a living for themselves and their families.

7th October 2020. START OF THE MODULE.
The start of the 'Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship - TMA1402 module.
For my creative practice I'm wanting to carry on with doing portraits of people. The portraits that I've done for my past projects have always been with using acrylic paint. I would like to continue with using acrylic paint because you can create so many textures and put the paint on the canvas as light or as dark as you want depending on the image that you're making. With using acrylic paints just the marks that you put on your canvas tells the story in a different light. Due to COVID 19 I'm thinking on focusing on the mental health side of things. COVID has been massive let down on so many people's lives and so many people's mental health. I'm wanting to capture that with the work that I will end up producing. I'm wanting to bring mental health into my work but do it in a way that isn't going to make people that see my work feel 10 times worse than they probably already do. I'm wanting to make awareness and to show people through my work that they aren't alone. Everyone goes through tough times. I want people to look at my work and think to themselves that it's okay to talk about what it is that they are going through instead of feeling ashamed. Also I'm wanting to bring a little bit of festivity into my piece of work because so many people are mainly looking forward to celebrating Christmas due to COVID ruining there year.
For the MA module I will be researching about Huddersfield and Queensgate Market in Huddersfield. I'm going to start researching about the festive season especially what they do around Christmas time in Huddersfield. For example I will be researching about the Christmas Coca Cola truck that visited Huddersfield a couple of years ago now. Talk about how the festive season brings so much joy to so many people's lives. The festive season ends up making so many people so happy and jolly because as they say it's ‘the most wonderful home for the year’.
For my MA module I'm wanting to carry on bringing bright bold colours into my paintings. I get massively inspired by the pop art movement because they used so many bright bold colours which to this day are very eye-catching to look at. I think the bright colours that will be used in the project will draw people in because bright colours do end up making people a whole lot happier and that's what everyone needs right now. As the pop art movement is a popular culture I'm wanting to reflect on this too but also thinking about COVID as well.
My understanding on the creative industries is what work you will end up creating will have so much sentimental value of an artistic nature for not only yourself but to the audience. The work that gets created has to stand out from the rest so that it catches the audiences attention more.
