I may have answered the questions, including an unasked one!
"When was this book published?" Should have been question number one, because the answer to that question answers the others, in part.
The book, Primary Object Lessons, for Training the Senses and Developing the Faculties of Children : A Manual of Elementary Instruction for Parents and Teachers / By N. A. Calkins, was first published in 1870. There are several editions of it available on Archive.org (he authored 40 editions of it) and all of them have different looking colored sections at the front of the book, not in the actual section on teaching color.
Here's one from the Fifteenth Edition, courtesy of the Library of Congress (The version OP posted above is from the Fortieth Edition, by the way):

Of course, the page has to have been hand painted. I'm guessing with gouache, based on the opacity of the paint. It's at the front of the book so that the paint won't bleed through the pages. You can very clearly see the difference in brush strokes between the two editions as well.
So the answers to my questions about the colors could be answered one of two ways:
1) The person who painted the page did not achieve the mixed colors by actually mixing colors but by taking paint straight from the tube (which never matches what you get when you mix them).
And/or
2) Specific pigments in the paints simply didn't age well on clearly non-archival paper. Since paper ages to yellow, it would make sense that all the colors would be a warmer tone across the board.
So now I have a new question, one that I haven't been able to answer yet:
Did the books come pre-painted, or did the books owner have to paint that page themselves?

OK, I've been looking at this image for a few minutes and I have questions:
Why is their indigo example blue-green?
What combination of that red and blue pigment could ever make that tint of violet?

Because my handwriting is somewhat atrocious (and the Alt text has a 1000 character limit) I'm going to transcribe these in a Read More below:
12:00-8:30am- Sleep
I've been sleeping in the craft room while Joel had a cold. It's a (twin) inflatable mattress.
8:30-9:30- Phone things
New month in Animal Crossing Pocket Camp C means new stuff and Best Friend gift for Kiki 🖤 Also some Tumblr (hehehe)
My period cramps are bad so I "lie in" on the floor and silently wish I was in Real Bed. Joel is better, so he's washing the bed sheets.
9:30- 10:30 Brekkie
My daily Brekkie Drink (instant breakfast mix, oat milk, benefiber, Miralax tincture) and Joel made biscuits.
10:30-12:30 More YouTube
Saturday mornings are usually recovery-from-the-week time for me. I usually don't get out of bed until after lunch...Thorin is a bed-hog boy.
12:30-13:30 Lunch
Veggie corn dog (corn-corn dog), green grapes, and some garlic Parmesan coated popcorn (+ a Yakult I didn't wanna draw).
14:00-16:30 Fell Asleep
[Thorin, again] [Took my glasses off and held them???] [Lamp still on]
Migraine sufferers like me are not supposed to take naps, but fatigue is one of my big prodrome symptoms so...sometimes it happens.
16:30-17:30 Woke up + Snack + Saw that it was HCD + started drawing
Awoke SUPER dehydrated and sweaty (thnx SSRIs!) chugged some water, shed some layers, and had a popsicle while I watched a Twitch stream 🖤 [Grizzhoot playing a ZOoTR] [crunchy popsicle]
Trying not to worry about the quality of artwork. Trying to resist the idea of "cleaning it up" digitally. (My least favorite thing.) (I hate tracing...)
And that's where I stopped for the night!

There will come a point where you will stop being 18-22 and your art output will slow dramatically, either from life circumstances, work, or schooling, and you will feel the urge to blame yourself for it. Don't!

Radicalizing the youth by reminding them that their 1st Amendment rights protect them from punishment from refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Just be silent, they can't make you do it.

Hey! This blog is Technecat Scratchings now because I finally broke down and started an art inspiration reblog-only blog at @technecat-nibblings where I reblog things that spark my artistic joy because there's literally nowhere else to do that online that isn't inundated with advertising (or charges you to make a board with more than 50 Things on it).
I endeavor to always reblog from the original source or, in the case of old print art, reblog from someone who provides a proper source. I won't be adding anything to any of the reblogs (no comments, no additional tags, etc) there, but I might reblog it here to leave my two cents if it's something I want to gush about.

a lot of times the difference between messy art and clean art or imperfect art and perfect art or bad art and good art is that the former actually gets finished and the latter stays an idea you punish yourself with

Some big news, I got to illustrate my first children's book!! ╥﹏╥ 🎉 Incredible story by Blair Braverman about her real-life sled dog team and puppy Leap! I've been a huge fan of hers for so long, it was a dream to work on it. If you pre-order from A Room of One's Own you can get a signed copy, and support a trans-owned community bookstore as well. 💕

Thaumatropes definitely win out on age when it comes to early animation, but the pottery above could be the earliest example of a zoetrope!

A 5200-year-old pottery bowl from Shahr-e Sukhteh bearing what could possibly be the world's oldest example of animation. It shows 5 images of a wild goat leaping, and if you put them in a sequence (like a flip book), the wild goat leaps to nip leaves off a tree. Museum of Ancient Iran

I wish this was true, but it's kind of the opposite. They know how to follow YT tutorials on how to circumnavigate school firewalls and install VPNs but cannot tell you what a VPN is or why their cellphone is using SO MUCH data that it's killing their battery every two hours. And THEN they're confused when their student Gmail account gets locked and their Chromebook confiscated because THE DEPT OF HOMELAND SECURITY CONTACTED THE DISTRICT because somebody from Japan and Russia was accessing our servers.
So, no, these kids are NOT good at OpSec, they are in fact TERRIBLE at it. 🤣

New year, new semester, new urge to do something really impressive and over-the-top for the faculty and staff art show in Spring.
My cool portrait of a pretty anime boy did not garner much support last year...it was clearly seen as "low art" compared to all the beautiful traditional work and photography.
Which is...fine? I mean I'm a digital artist with a background in animation and video game design, my art has never been "high art" and probably won't ever be considered as such.
But ALSO...I want my coworkers to think I'm cool. (๑•﹏•)

Doesn't matter, I ain't paying 70USD for a game that came out in 2011 and absolutely has to run like garbage on the Switch. 🤣
(Never buy a 10+ year old AAA game for full price!!!)
Fuck this, I'm reading a book. 📖
Someone PLEASE talk me out of getting Skyrim on the Switch because I've got the Skyrim Itch and I don't want to get on my PC and the Switch is just so convenient...
