While the turkey's roasting in the oven and everyone is enjoying some early afternoon adult beverages, I heartily recommend entertaining your guests with a little 18 minute ditty by a fella known as Arlo Guthrie. It's a true story (with a bit of artistic license) recounting an adventure that began on Thanksgiving Day way back in 1965 when he was 18 years old. Yes! That's right, 59 years ago.

It was released on Arlo's debut album, Alice's Restaurant in 1967. It became his best known song and was a protest song about Selective Service (the draft) during the Vietnam War.

It's a fun little song that allows everyone to join in on the chorus. In addition, it provides an opportunity for those older folks to teach the younger ones about the turbulent 1960s and an era of protest and social activism. It also might lead to enjoying a bit of herb later on after your delicious Thanksgiving feast.

I hope everyone will say a heartfelt prayer of thanks before your meal and acknowledge the bounty and freedom which we all enjoy in this country. Not everyone around the globe is quite as fortunate as we are. Enjoy your meal, get drunk, and revel in the company of others. Take a break from social media. Maybe it will become a good habit.
