As art teachers we have waited a lifetime to stand here...overlooking Florence and all of its wonder...we can't get enough. Learning through art, history and our class...the Renaissance period and its art is more than we ever imagined. #FundforTeachers

Today we continued the glaze-like application of the dark, medium, and light tones of color. The underpainting is very important to the success of the final painting. Each class is four hours of intensive study. We are loving learning and enjoy being inspired by other students In our studio! #FundforTeachers #gettingbettereveryday

The egg tempera painting involves transfer of the drawing to the canvas using burnt sienna pigment wrapped into a piece of cloth as a duster. The holes punched into the line drawing allow the pigment to drop through the holes onto the canvas. We then used a #2 round brush and water to connect the dots…thus creating a very light painting of our drawing. A bit of fixative spray and we are ready to paint! #FundforTeachers

Mixing this paint has given us new perspective and great respect for the Renaissance masters. Using egg binder and tempera powder we ground the pigment into a useable paint mixture. This process is time intensive and requires a lot of patience for a little paint. The 4 tiny dollops you see in this photo took approximately 2 hours. We still have 2 colors to mix before we begin the layering of paint. #FundforTeachers #poorMichelangelo #hopehehadanapprentice

We are using a mixture of warmed rabbit skin glue, gesso and water to prepare the canvases. We first paint this mixture onto both sides of the wood panel, allow a bit of drying, then adhere the canvas to the panel. Then comes several layers of the mixture to properly coat the canvas for painting. #FundforTeachers

We have officially begun our class in Florence…learning Renaissance masters painting techniques with egg tempera and powdered pigments! Step one was choosing a Renaissance painting as subject matter and getting it transferred onto the wood/canvas panel. These are the paintings we have chosen and are getting the basic shapes onto the paper first. #FundforTeachers #alittleintimidating
