Why December is the best time to find a new job

Eggnog. Office parties. Secret Santa. Just a few of my favourite things about the winter holidays.

It’s also the time for New Year’s resolutions, and for some of us, that includes finding a new job. The common prevailing wisdom is that December may be the worst time to seek new career opportunities. After all, hiring managers may be on vacation, interviews get delayed, and any momentum and excitement can get lost in the ensuing mayhem.

However, here are a few reasons why December can be the best time of year to find a new job.

1.  Less competition. More people are on vacation now than at any other time of the year. While your competitors are lounging on a beach chair in Mexico, go grab that dream job you’ve always wanted!

2.  The end-of-year budget panic. Any department that has yet to hire their allotted headcount by the end of the year will be highly motivated to fill empty seats before time runs out.

3.  Diligent managers. December is also the time when the next year’s hiring budgets are revealed. A wise hiring manager will want to get a ahead on recruitment to start the new year strong—i.e., finding the human capital required to deliver on their mandates.

4.  People who already know that December is a great time for new jobs. They’ve already gotten their year-end bonuses, if offered, and are making the switch as you read this. One person’s vacancy can be another person’s dream job.
