Every now and then some discourse pops up around a queer ship consisting of a pair of fictional characters who are not blood related, but refer to themselves as "brothers" or "sisters," or are in some way, according to the fandom, "sibling-coded."

Every time I see that discourse, all I can think about are the very real queer men I once knew, who, before their deaths, lived their lives posing as "stepbrothers." The only way to avoid suspicion for being two older unmarried men living together in a rural conservative area was to pretend they were from the same family, even though the truth was that they were lovers.

They were never out in life. Their relationship was a strict secret to nearly everyone. They never knew that I knew, and sometimes it fucks me up inside that they never got to come out to me. It fucks me up that they had to hide behind a fake "brotherly" relationship for their own safety. It fucks me up to look at a gravestone that reads "beloved brother" and know what it really means, and what it could have said if they'd lived under different circumstances.

In another world, they could have been husbands, but they never had the opportunity. The world will remember them as brothers, because, even in death, that is what was safest.

The freedom to declare queer love openly is something that not everyone has. And I think more people could stand to remember that.

Re-reading Hiori's backstory gets to me every time.

I wonder if, in a world without Blue Lock especially, Hiori would be the kind of person to always have a bag packed and ready to go, just in case.

And maybe Karasu would be that refuge. Especially in a shipping way. Love doesn't solve much of anything, but I think his door would always be open to him.

Do you have a favorite obscure piercing fact?

Yes! Although I'm not sure if it's as obscure as it seems. I just think it's important to know with everything going on in the world right now.

Modern body piercing in the West is rooted in gay B*D**S**M culture. Specifically leathermen.

So I think, if a queer person is complaining about a hypothetical Pride event where leathermen or some other subculture are involved, they should remember the roots of their ability to get + have piercings.

If you want to look up more, Jim Ward is the key figure in this. His book, Running the Gauntlet, does also acknowledge that he wasn't the only one making innovations and that there is still a white Western context to this.

(The Piercing Bible by Elaine Angel is also really worth reading or even owning a copy of)

What are your favorite piercings?

Piercing questions! Hi, I love these ty.

My favorite piercing is pretty basic these days, but it's septum piercings. Super versatile, lots of different jewelery options, difficult to have complications with, and looks amazing at any size. I'm very glad that it's grown in popularity.

I'm also a huge fan of philtrum piercings. They're one of those ones I find silly that people make into a gender thing, because they're great and not as common as they really should be. They're cute!

Honorable mention goes to snakebites and their place in 00s scene/emo fashion. That's always fun to look at pictures of.

Hi! Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply, after hospital I ended up traveling and some life things happened.

It’s lovely being at home, especially this time of year when it’s cold and I can be cozy indoors without worry.

I might be going into a partial inpatient programme after Christmas and New Year, but there’s still some things to be sorted out.
