thinking about the strangeness of biblical hebrew. no vowels, for centuries. no pointing, no indication of who is speaking when. no reverential capitalization. thinking about how we read gen 4:10 as "and god said [to cain], 'what have you done?'" but just as easily, the passage could be: "and cain said [to god], 'what have you done?'" both translations work. both translations fit as much as they don't. and so we don't have to pick which we like; we don't have to insist that either god or cain is being blamed for the death of a brother. both can be at fault, bloody fingers pointing at one another, two mouths agape in horror

What's your opinion on angels? The only theologist I know has a very critical and harsh view on them..

in the hebrew bible, angels are de-formed and dis-bodied. i mean, they are legible only at their limits. the god of the hb works on a divine council, as all good ancient near eastern gods do—he speaks in plurality and in non-rhetorical interrogatives: asking what ‘we’ should do, not what he should do. in some prophetic visions, heavenly bodies appear and they are horrible (you know the memes.) but in the ane, a body could not be heavenly if it were not also horrible. there is something necessarily abject about the god-ish. and god-ish is perhaps the only word that works for these biblical things. at times they are god, at times extensions of god, at times they are god’s creation gone so wrong. god plays in the site of these bodies, forming and re-forming both them and himself, risking the limits of that which signifies the unsignifiable
