Lauren’s Top Books of 2015
Now in it’s fourth year, I bring you my favorite books I read this year! This year was my first in the public library sector and that may have a little to do with the fact that I read ONE HUNDRED BOOKS this year. Yup, triple digits. Daily access to thousands of popular titles and a two year commute on the subway will do that to a girl. I also wrote lists for 2012, 2013, and 2014.
1) Lock-In by John Scalzi The kind of science fiction where technology radically changes our world–in this case special robot suits that are controlled by the minds of paralysis victims.
2) Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis An interplanetary Snow White retelling, where our heroine is a cage fighting computer hacker.
3) The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood My homegirl Maggie brings us yet another frightening tale of the future where people can trade home and job security for incarceration.
4) Carry On by Rainbow Rowell A real book about a fan fic of a fictional series in another Rowell novel. Mind blown. Must read if you liked Fangirl, but really is a good magical fantasy novel in its own right, and very different than other Rowell novels.
5) Drinking with Men by Rosie Schaap I’m not really a non-fiction fan, but I liked Rosie’s memoir told through the lens of the series of bars of which she has been a regular.
Series: Throne of Glass by Sarah Mass Bad-ass assassin fantasy series Finishing School by Gail Carriger Victorian girls in a secret finishing school that trains spies and assassins White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter Alice in Wonderland retelling with zombies. Super trashy, no fucks given.

Quote
“My response to the “I am not a feminist” internet phenomenon…. First of all, it’s clear you don’t know what feminism is. But I’m not going to explain it to you. You can google it. To quote an old friend, “I’m not the feminist babysitter.” But here is what I think you should know. You’re insulting every woman who was forcibly restrained in a jail cell with a feeding tube down her throat for your right to vote, less than 100 years ago. You’re degrading every woman who has accessed a rape crisis center, which wouldn’t exist without the feminist movement. You’re undermining every woman who fought to make marital rape a crime (it was legal until 1993). You’re spitting on the legacy of every woman who fought for women to be allowed to own property (1848). For the abolition of slavery and the rise of the labor union. For the right to divorce. For women to be allowed to have access to birth control (Comstock laws). For middle and upper class women to be allowed to work outside the home (poor women have always worked outside the home). To make domestic violence a crime in the US (It is very much legal in many parts of the world). To make workplace sexual harassment a crime. In short, you know not what you speak of. You reap the rewards of these women’s sacrifices every day of your life. When you grin with your cutsey sign about how you’re not a feminist, you ignorantly spit on the sacred struggle of the past 200 years. You bite the hand that has fed you freedom, safety, and a voice. In short, kiss my ass, you ignorant little jerks.”

I love this. Want to know where feminism is headed? Read Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay.

Yes. I am a feminist.
