Headcanon that can be easily demolished and that I thought at work. Long story short I thought why doesn't Bofur live with Bilbo? Before of course reminding myself that this ship is not canon.

Bref

Dwarves and Hobbits cannot live together.

Dwarves are made for cold temperatures, they live in the mountains and are necessarily adapted to that.

Hobbits walk barefoot with light clothing. Their life revolves around harvests (and other things) so I tell myself that it must be warmer there.

The dwarves mostly come to see Bilbo in winter because it is the most pleasant season for them. Conversely, he goes to see his friends in the mountains in summer because it is the warmest and most pleasant time for him.

Of course they could overcome the temperature difference but it would not be pleasant and they can very well live a relationship, love or friendship at a distance.
