Grounding

What It Is

Grounding usually refers to heightening your physical awareness. It’s most commonly used when you’re about to or have just finished working on mental things like meditation, but it can be used for other things where you want to connect back to your body and become more aware of physical sensations. In witchcraft, it also tends to mean being aware of your own energy and its flow, and in some circles can even include a connection to the earth’s energy.

Aside from helping with witchcraft, it has also been proven to help with sleep issues, anxiety, depression, and more. Note: it is not a cure for any of these, but it can help mitigate or manage some of the side effects for a lot of people.

How to Do It

There are a variety of methods that people have successfully used to ground themselves, but from all that I’ve seen, experienced, and read, they tend to have several things in common.

The first common factor is breathing. Calm, even breathing helps people ground themselves in the present and in the sensations that their own body is feeling. If you are struggling to find a good rhythm when breathing, try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. To establish good pacing, try breathing in for six seconds, holding it for six seconds, and releasing it for six seconds. A common problem people encounter is that they are unconsciously breathing shallowly or incorrectly. Proper breathing should be from the diaphragm (that space between your ribs, right above your waist), and not from the chest. A good way to tell if you are doing it correctly is to place a hand there and see if it moves when you breathe in.

The second common factor is feeling. There are a variety of ways to do this, including focusing on the feel of what you are sitting on, holding something with an interesting texture to focus on, tapping your fingers together lightly, etc. There are a variety of ways to do this, so find one that works for you - and feel free to experiment with it, if you have no idea what might work. Again, the purpose is to draw yourself back into the present and your awareness of your physical form existing in a space, and touch is one of the most common (and easiest) ways to do this.

The third common factor is your mental state. This ties into centering a bit, but it is still a part of grounding. The goal is to develop a relaxed mental state so that your body can relax as well, making it easier to ground yourself in the present. This can be done by a variety of methods as well. The most common method is by entering a meditative state, where your thoughts are allowed to come and go, counting backwards in multiples, focusing on one specific thing that you see, focus on music (no lyrics often works best for most people), or even doing repetitive movements. The point is not what you do or how you do it, but to allow your mind to relax.

Combining these three things together should help you figure out how to ground yourself effectively, and allow you to connect with yourself and your own energies better.
