PEOPLE IN BOXES will be a multimedia presentation at White Box gallery.
These are pictures of people commuting on crowded trains in Tokyo. I had a feeling that people traveling on packed trains during rush hour has become a stereotypical image of the city of Tokyo. And it seems to me that these people are like prisoners who are trapped within their own society. I found subtle humour in the emotionless faces of the passengers on the trains, which sparked my interest in them and prompted me to start capturing those faces on film a few years ago.
The photos depict people on congested trains like insects crammed into tiny boxes, which is why I tried to show them as if they truly were specimens in a lab or museum on display. There is a light undertone that these people are tied down by society or their own lifestyles. In the future, I want to show these pictures to the people who are living in Tokyo and have them smile, knowing that people used to live this way.
As I continued to take more and more photos, I felt a something starting to change inside of me. I began to truly observe and take notice of the single individuals among the crowds I was capturing on film. Some wore exhausted expressions, or expressions that showed they were just in too tight of a space and wanted to break free. Others simply wore emotionless expressions, as if they were in another world within their mind. Regardless of their facial expression, however, I could envision a unique story for each individual based on their fashion-style, the bags they were carrying, or even their body language and I felt that I truly knew and understood them, and on some sense even began to love them. I also noticed a number of amusing coincidences while snapping these photos.
Complete strangers would board the same car together, and I often found that the juxtaposition of the advertisements plastered on the sides of the train with the expressions on the faces of the passengers was sometimes almost too contrasting to be coincidence, as if they under the influence of some magical spell. To me, these photos are both conceptual and documentary. They capture what I believe to be a feeling of human requiem and the spontaneity and randomness of life and the universe. I questioned whether the release of these photos would somehow hurt or embarrass the individuals that were captured.
However, during the process of shooting these photos, I came to realize that all of the things that I wanted to express were naturally presented before my camera and me and that I wanted to show them to the world. I would be extremely happy if the people of Tokyo, and others around the world could look at these photos and take something away from them.
