"they were all idiots for assuming you were straight." friendly reminder that tao was talking right through the tv screen to YOU GUYS for what y'all did to kit it's literally a gut punch to see nick coming out handled with so much love in this show while the very fans of said show ruined this kid's life

One thing that caught my eye in the Heartstopper season 2 trailer, which I also loved in the comics, is that scene where Tao opens the door shirtless to see Elle standing outside. The thing that captivates me about that scene is how he covers his chest and desperately shuts the door afterwards. Because that’s something teenage boys do around teenage girls. They don’t do that around other boys, because they don’t need to. They change clothes in locker rooms constantly. We see Tao hanging around Charlie and Isaac prior to that moment and he doesn’t seem to care they’re seeing him shirtless. Because they’re guys.
The fact Tao instinctively covered his chest around Elle shows that he truly sees her just like any other girl. Tao knew her before she came out as trans, and was there during her entire transition. He’s cis and straight. He has a crush on Elle and treats her like any other teenage girl, because that’s what she is to him. A girl he has a crush on. It warms my little nonbinary heart.

things heartstopper does brilliantly because i refuse to let some of you monsters ruin it for everyone
1. models healthy consent practices!! oh my goodness!! asking to kiss, double checking that consent is enthusiastic, being honest about moments that lacked consent (see: b*n h*pe and imogen asking out nick). later in the books we get even more amazing examples of consent being an ongoing conversation!!
2. the teenagers act their age!! they’re awkward, they’re confused, they’re unsure of themselves, they are PLAYED BY YOUNG ACTORS!!! it’s realistic and beautiful and doesn’t set unreasonable expectations for viewers like almost every other show about high schoolers
3. SUPPORTIVE PARENTS!!! all of the parents we have met so far have been loving, supportive, compassionate, and patient. it’s so nice to have multiple queer and trans characters who are embraced by their parents and their friend’s parents from the beginning. and tao’s mom is an icon.
4. safe people and places!! the characters have trusted adults like mr. ajayi and mrs. singh and safe places like the art room that they can go to when things are rough. it models healthy support network building and healthy coping skills!!!
5. all the ways you can come out and be out!! it tells a beautiful “coming out isn’t always easy and it’s never the end of the journey” story without making coming out seem like a disaster waiting to happen. yes, charlie was outed - and people still jumped to his aid even before nick came around. no one pressures nick to come out (a major story arc some of y’all clearly didnt pay attention to) and they tell him it’s fine if he doesn’t know what to label his sexuality if he even wants to label it at all.
6. LETTING. BOYS. CRY. oh my god it’s so refreshing to see a show where boys get to cry instead of punching walls. and not once does someone tell them crying makes them less masculine. no one tells anyone to stop crying. they’re allowed to be emotional and it’s wonderful.
7. affection. i adore the way this show portrays all the small ways you can say “i love you”: a homemade picture frame, buying your apple juice every day, waiting until you’re ready, taking you to the beach, bringing over cookies for movie night, bringing their dog to the date to cheer you up, running over in the rain, punching someone in the face for you.
feel free to add more!!! i just want to highlight the best parts of this show + graphic novel series because it really is a masterpiece. i hope kit (and the rest of the cast and crew) knows that he’s doing a good job - a great job - and that no one else’s shitty behavior can change that.

Tao Xu is autistic and here's why.
He is very blunt and can be percieved as rude a lot of the time
He has a strong sense of justice, he is super protective of his friends and is skeptical of people outside his friendship group because they are unfamiliar to him. He feels most content when he is just with his friends.
His special interest is films and he has a routine where his friends come round and watch one of his films with him and he gets stressed that the rugby team will come and join their film nights because of Nick. He always wants his friends to engage in his special interest with him and he shows the films to them even if they don't like the film.
He hates change, and he wants things to always stay the same (especially in his friend group), often stating he loves it when things feel like ''old times''. He is super scared when Charlie starts being best friends with Nick because he doesn't trust or like the rugby team and the year 11 boys.
He stims by dancing and saying things in a weird way. An example would be in episode 6 (girls) at the milkshake cafe when he sees Elle, he is probably too socially awkward to say hi, so instead he just does a dance. And the way he says rude on the same episode sounds like it could be a vocal stim. Also when he says ''how dare you'' to Elle sounds like a vocal stim.
He also struggles with running which seems autistic to me because I too struggle with running and sport and I am autistic. Also some autistics struggle with fine motor skills and exercise. I think not being able to run can also be a metaphor for not being able to keep up with neurotypical expectations and ideals. For example, Charlie isn't into sports but is able to fit into playing rugby, but Tao just completely can't get his head around things he doesn't like or that don't come naturally to him. He doesn't understand understand how Charlie can just move into that world (or at least try to).
He is stubborn and hates when people don't listen to him and what he has to say or misinterpret it (I am autistic and I do this too)
He often finds it hard to see other points of view which I do too, often thinking he knows best. I personally see him as having Pathelogical Demand Avoidance (PDA)
His tone can be quite monotone at times, and struggles with communicating in a way that a neurotypical could.
Whenever he is outside, he is almost always seen wearing a beanie, which could be a routine or a sensory thing. He also has a collection of beanies.
He is fine with being an outcast and being different (which I feel the same) and he doesn't understand macho ''bro dude friends'' as he described them.
In episode 7, where Elle randomly shows up at his house, he isn't completely happy. He is unsure because he didn't plan it or agree to it. He looks confused when he sees her. And the next line he has, he says ''It's supposed to be a shoe.'' in a very monotone blunt voice.
He can't tell when Elle is flirting with him. That's an example of him not being able to read subtle social cues. Even though he likes her, he can't tell when she is giving him signals that she likes him back.
In conclusion there is loads of evidence to suggest that Tao is autistic and PDA.
