Sometimes it's so sad to realize that most of what we believe to be true about historical figures is likely untruths that have spread simply because of past events. It was as if everyone trying to write their own story that fit the right mold and those who didn't fit became «bad and wrong».

Martha Ray (1746 – 7 April 1779) was a British singer of the Georgian era. Her father was a corsetmaker and her mother was a servant in a noble household. Good-looking, intelligent, and a talented singer, she came to the attention of many of her father's patrons. She is best known for her affair with John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. She lived with him as his mistress from the age of seventeen, while his wife was suffering from mental illness. She gave birth to nine children, five of whom survived, including the lawyer and philanthropist Basil Montagu. During this time, she conducted a successful singing career, for which she became well known, as well as completing her education with Lord Sandwich's support.

"She was, in the brief time allowed her, a good mother, incurring her husband’s displeasure by insisting on breastfeeding Elizabeth herself, which high-born mothers never did, and choosing pretty clothes for the child. She rarely saw her, however, for the Princess was given her own household at Hatfield House at three months old, and thereafter her mother could only visit when her other duties permitted."

So after seeing the restoration Le Louvre did to the painting of Anne of Cleves I was like "Damn, now I kinda wanna draw her"
So I did
Tumblr media
But it's such a lazy drawing.
Like for one, it's not actually finished and I'm not really planning on finishing it. And to be honest, I didn't think I was going anywhere further than her bust so while drawing I forgot proportions are a thing.
I focused A LOT on details that didn't even come out all that great, but yk what? I could complain all day about what I don't like about this drawing, so I'll just shut up now

I was in the mood to draw an actual person and out of all the official/most famous paintings of Henry VIII's wives, I like Anne of Cleves' portrait the best, so I decided to draw that. This was a lot of fun! 20 min doodle, pen on plain white paper.
Edit - I plan to do more Tudor women, but I also welcome suggestions for anything else anyone would like to see me turn into one of these lovely doodles... regardless of time period. I'm already eyeing a few well- and lesser-known paintings that I've always liked.
