I’ve had this silly thought in my mind that, down the line when Vi and Caitlyn become an established couple, Caitlyn has high Piltovian society functions to attend and to which Vi chooses not to accompany Caitlyn. And it’s not that Caitlyn isn’t inviting Vi to be her plus one, but Vi doesn’t feel comfortable with the idea–and Vi is quick to point out that it doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to be seen with Caitlyn, it’s not about that, but that… y'know… it’s a fancy shindig and all. Caitlyn doesn’t seem hurt by Vi’s disinclination. The first time Vi declines, Caitlyn is quiet for a bit and Vi thinks that Caitlyn is going to launch into a speech about how Vi has as much a right as any other citizen to go to a fancy party, but Caitlyn merely caresses Vi’s cheek in a fond gesture. It’s a little surprising and Vi can’t decide if she’s relieved not to have to argue with Caitlyn or if she’s a little annoyed Caitlyn didn’t push the point.

For a while they fall into a predictable pattern: Caitlyn announces she has an event to attend and asks, lightly, if Vi would like to join her and Vi turns down the offer, sometimes making excuses, sometimes outright admitting it doesn’t feel right. Caitlyn never pushes one way or the other, simply accepts Vi’s decision.

Until one day Vi decides, To hell with it, why shouldn’t she go? Vi says yes. Caitlyn’s reaction is… subdued. Not what Vi expected. Vi’s working herself up mentally to be offended when Caitlyn takes her hands and holds them in her own, studying Vi’s knobby knuckles, brushing her thumbs over their valleys and crests.

“You don’t want me to go,” says Vi, anger at the surface of her words because she hadn’t expected to be angry and so it’s off the leash.

Caitlyn raises her eyes and there’s the little furrow between her eyebrows. Her thinking face. Caitlyn speaks thoughtfully. “It’s not that.”
