Anemones

Whew......chapter 7 had a lot going on, huh! There's a lot to be said about some of the bombshells dropped, however I want to take a look at one of the smaller details that can be easily missed 💐

That being Victoria's bouquet! It's very pretty...Eins did a nice job picking it out 💜

Looking at the flowers themselves, you'll notice they're actually anemones. Tajima-sensei has stated before that she does take flower language, or "hanakotoba," into account when choosing her floral arrangements, so let's take a little deeper look at what these could mean!

If we look at the color art we have for this chapter, we can see that the bouquet consists of red, white, and purple anemones. Color plays a big role in flower language and can be the difference between confessing your love to someone and telling them you hate their guts — definitely not something to take lightly! Below you'll find some of the meanings I was able to find for different colored anemones:

Red — "I love you."

White — hope or anticipation for the future

Purple — "I believe in you."

It should be noted that these are the Japanese meanings, which are the most likely ones the author chose, however there's still the chance that the western flower language played a part.

In western cultures, anemones mean "ephemeral love," and stem from the story of Adonis, a mortal lover of Aphrodite. He was killed on a hunting trip by a boar, and it is said that where Aphrodite's tears for him mixed with his blood, anemones grew. Quite a tragic tale! Given the concluding events of chapter 7, it's possible the author also chose anemones for this reason, to represent a relationship that's not meant to be. It's definitely interesting and commendable to see how much detail she puts into her work! 🌹

Ages and heights from Tajima-sensei’s twitter! I’m in no way a Japanese expert but I tried to roughly translate what the comments say (and thank you to rapidfur for checking over them!):

Eins (19 years old, 179 cm)

The monster: The original was very intelligent. He doesn't groan, he's very talkative.

Victoria (13 years old, 153 cm)

Frankenstein: The original was mentally weak.

Walton (43 years old, 182 cm)

Robert Walton: The original arctic explorer was about 28 years old.

PS, in chapter 6, we can see Victoria meeting Henry when she is 11, shortly after he received the Order of Medicine. Knowing that he was 15 when he received it, we can guess that he’s around 17-18 now.

I got distracted by chapter 13 and forgot I wanted to talk about 4.5! I really liked it!! I think there’s something to be said about Eins and Victoria using each other (at least initially) to fill some sort of missing piece in their lives......

It’s quite sad, in all honesty. Their care for each other is, well, pretty selfishly motivated in the beginning, but I think that’s what makes their later development that much sweeter! I’m excited to see how the two of them continue to grow 💜

...My BIGGEST question is, however...

Does Eins sleep with his shoes on???

Wilis, the corpse bride

Chapter 4! My favorite thus far. Though Henry is a bit more plot relevant of the characters introduced, I was to talk about Wilis!

Seeing her name at first made go “hey!! Isn’t Wilis usually spelled with two L’s??” And you’d be right in thinking so! But her name isn’t actually Will-is, but ウィリ (read “Willie”) — it’s French! Specifically, it’s from the ballet Giselle.

Whoa, scary stuff! But also rather tragic...... quite fitting of Miss Wilis herself! Though I don’t believe the Wilis in Giselle have mecha arms, you never know.......stay on your toes, Eins 🦾
