Was out shopping with my mom and decided to take a few pics of the box art on this 5 Suprise Fairy Unicorn Squad box, since I haven’t seen this character art anywhere online and I just think they look cute and really cool.

Have you heard of Zuru five surprise unicorn squad/fariry unicorn squad? If so, what are your thoughts on them? I’ve started collecting a few myself and they’re actually pretty decent by surprise toy standards.

I had not heard of it! But now...I've looked it up to see what it's all about. Zuru is really interesting as a brand, because of its quite low price point but then apparent quality. I had seen plenty of the Zuru Sparkle Girlz unicorns at Walmart (they're unpackaged, and just have a tag on the collar to buy them at about 2 or 3 dollars each) and then more recently the larger ones with movable legs appearing at Big Lots. I guess they're technically 'pony fakies' at their little size, but they're CLEARLY better quality than any of the G4 (late) and G5 stuff. They have 4 rows of hair for the mane, plus bangs, plus a 'rim' of hair around the face to give them a dolly hairline. The hair is also nylon that feels quality, not that crunchy, stiff, cheap-as-possible junk Hasbro's been using and then charging like 4x more for recently on everything. How is Zuru doing it? Great colors, obviously tons of 'characters', big toys and like...ultra-low pricing? As for the 5 Surprise, I'm not surprised at all that they are quality and variety. They've gone from 'ugly fake barbie doll in a cone' to a real contender with their variety of fairies and unicorns that they are actually putting effort into. Movable limbs, brushable hair, accessories, and special paint for 'surprise-bag' toys is good, however they seem to run about 10 dollars each which is high for something you don't know what you'll get. Opinion time: I probably won't get these, as they're not quite 'pony like' enough with their forward facing eyes (better than G5 but still) and the noses look like a tube on a balloon. It's too separate from the face/maybe going for that 'puppy dog' look. It makes an ok toy that is fine to like, but it is not a type that I will like enough to collect. If they molded the 5Surprise like the medium ones, I might be tempted. Their Zuru regular ones seem to go for a bit of the G2 look (good for fans of that) with taller heads, but their nose/mouth is unified with the head as it would be on a horse, which has more appeal (to me). If I find any Zuru anything at thrift of yard sale, it would likely appear as a TTT here though. (Thank you for letting me know about these!)

Unexpected Joy

I found a Zuru Unicorn Squad ball at 5-Below today (Amazon link here) and I wish I’d gotten more of them because they’re really cute.

I’ve never bought their 5 Surprise balls because I had a feeling they wouldn’t be that great, and watching people open them on YouTube, I’m glad I passed on them.

But I sure have bought a lot of the Mini Brands.

Back to Unicorn Squad. I wasn’t sure what was inside. Maybe unicorn themed junk like in the regular 5 Surprise? The ball says 13 magical unicorns to collect, so maybe mini figures?

There was the chance they were similar to LOL Surprise Pets, so I got one.

Seeing this differently segmented ball was encouraging! There’s plenty of room for a LOL Surprise Pets sized unicorn in the hemisphere, and 3 more segments for accessories.

The collector’s guide folds up to make a rainbow.

And there are some really cute looking, accessorized unicorns in there! These were certainly more like LOL Pets than their standard 5 Surprise.

I decided Coral was my favorite.

How...... Ok, well I got Coral! She comes with her mane separate. I did have some difficulty putting it on, but that was me being tired and I’m easily confused when I’m tired. She has articulation at each hip and shoulder, a glitter encrusted horn, and a brushable tail. And she already has her necklace on.

And here are the rest of her items. A comb, 2 sheets of glittery seashell stickers, two pearly cuffs, one small stick-on hair piece, her tail/skirt, and a little wedge full of either putty or dough. It looks like a dough. I didn’t open it.

Her mane and tail are pearlescent and sparkle in the sun.

Honestly, I’m tired of unicorn toys always being tied with poop or slime these days, and I really don’t like slime anyway.

So yeah. A lot like a LOL without the water play. Nice materials, too. She’s not too “cheap” feeling or looking, though she could use some more detailed paint like maybe some muzzle blushing and painted hooves.

Here’s Coral next to a LOL horse, which let’s be honest, barely looks like a horse.

$5 seems a little high for such a toy, and I have no idea what the standard retail was, but I was pleasantly surprised by Zuru’s 5 Surprise Unicorn Squad.

Ah, I've been interested in getting one of the Zuru Unicorn Squad for quite a while, I think I first saw them on @dollsonmain‘s blog.  I got one from Series 2, and I'm quite happy with her ^_^  This is my first Zuru blind-ball thing (though I have been interested in the Mini Brands ones too).  The segmented ball is a neat idea.  I have no interest in opening up the "unicorn poop putty", but at least it's just a small part of what you get, and there's nothing buried in it that you have to dig out or anything.  it does look nice too, I just... don't want to touch it.  There are also some cute, puffy, glittery stickers, and a comb (which is pretty unnecessary). 

Cooper herself is very cute!  She has a real hair tail, and a plastic wig.  She also has shoes, a bubblegum bubble, a crown-thing, and a skirt.  That's a pretty nice amount of accessories.  I think what you get for the money is good, and I like the look of the other ones in the guide.  I would definitely consider getting more.  (I don't really tend to see them in stock much though, which is why it took me so long to even get this one.  Now that I know how nice they are in person though, I think I'll definitely look harder).

Well, it didn’t take me long to get a second Zuru unicorn ^^;  Lively is pretty nice.  I like her necklace and her seashell hair ornament ^_^

(I find the sticker with the lips a bit of a... questionable choice though...)
