Note
for the wips, "high school"!
send me a wip title!
this one is fun i love the idea of modern au azula and sokka being besties and i wanted to try writing a high school au which i havent done since i myself was in high school. what happens in this is azula gets a concussion during cheer practice and sokka keeps stopping by the house to check on her and he has absolutely no ulterior motices (lying)
putting my favorite scenes below the cut!
...
hey, can you open the door? :)
this is sokka btw
kunik
azula gave me your number once
or maybe it was katara
oh i should clarify, i’m at your house.
Zuko watches each text message pop up with a strange feeling of dissociation. Surely any moment he’s going to wake up from this dream where the school’s cheerleader captain 1.) is texting him 2.) is at his house 3.) knows he exists??
“Zuko?” Mai asks, throwing one of his socks at his head. “Did you hear me?”
“Sokka is texting me,” Zuko says in response, and Mai raises an eyebrow. It’s good that Ty Lee isn’t here, she would most certainly be breaking the rule of silence in the house right now, but that doesn’t stop Zuko’s ears ringing anyway.
“Why is he texting you?” Mai asks, and, ouch, thanks for the vote of confidence.
“He says he’s here, and to open the door,” Zuko says.
“So what are you waiting for?” Mai asks.
Zuko doesn’t have a good answer, so he stands up and leaves his room, making sure to keep his footsteps quiet.
When he opens the door, Sokka is typing on his phone, but he immediately looks up, a smile of relief on his face.
“Hey,” Sokka says. “Sorry if that was weird, I just didn’t want to ring the doorbell or knock too loudly, then after I texted you I realized we had never texted before, and—“
“It’s fine,” Zuko says, and Sokka closes his mouth, nodding.
“Right,” he finally says. “Um, I wanted to see how Azula is doing?”
“She’s fine. Taking the whole week off,” Zuko answers.
“That’s smart,” Sokka nods, and then the silence hangs between them.
“I think she’s napping now, but I’ll tell her you stopped by,” Zuko says.
“That would be great. Thanks, Zuko, I’ll see you around,” Sokka smiles, turning to leave and giving a wave before he steps off the porch.
Zuko quietly closes the door and goes back to his room, where Mai is watching him curiously.
“Well?” she asks, bored.
Zuko goes to the window and sneakily peeks out, watching Sokka walk down the driveway and then walk down the sidewalk in the direction of where his house is, and Zuko sighs.
“That was stupid. He probably knows I have a massive crush on him now,” Zuko mutters.
and this
The next day, Zuko gets the same text at the same time.
He had been searching the halls for Sokka, more than usual at least, and was disappointed when he didn’t see him. This didn’t last once he realized it meant another visit.
As soon as he opens the door, though, he still doesn’t know what to say.
He crosses his arms. “Do you want me to get Azula?” he asks.
“Oh, I don’t want to bother her. Give this to her? I just brought her some homework.”
Zuko stares at the folder for several moments before grabbing it. “Isn’t it all online anyway?”
Sokka’s eyes widen for a moment, and then he blurts out, “Computer screens!”
“Computer screens?” Zuko asks.
“She’s probably avoiding looking at computer screens?” Sokka explains. “So it might help her head to have it on paper instead?”
“Right. Well, thanks. and thanks for stopping by yesterday. she said she’s fine.”
“Good. Tell her to let me know if there is anything I can bring her when I come by tomorrow. See ya.”
“See ya.”
It sounds like a promise.
another one
When Mai leaves the next day, she almost runs into Sokka as he steps onto the porch.
“Hi Mai,” he grins, and she pauses for a moment before giving a nod and walking away.
“Sorry, i didn’t know your girlfriend was over,” Sokka says, walking up to Zuko.
“Mai’s not—“ Zuko says quickly, then sees the glint in Sokka’s eye. “Ha ha.”
“Come on, give me some credit. I see the way she looks at Ty Lee.”
“What does that mean?” Zuko frowns.
“Oh, Zuko, you’re going to make me work harder, aren’t you?”
then one time Iroh lets Sokka in while Zuko is working on math homework and Sokka immediately starts helping him with it
This is a side of Sokka that Zuko has never seen before. Sure, Zuko likes his energy and his passion and his loudness, but there’s something sweet and intimate about Sokka whispering to him, patiently explaining the problem, their legs touching as they sit close so they can hear one another.
“That…actually makes sense,” Zuko says.
He finishes his homework in record time with Sokka's help, then fidgets with his pencil, realizing Sokka's reason for being with him is now all gone, but he takes a deep breath and asks, “Sokka, do you….want to stay for a bit?”
“Isn’t Azula sleeping?”
“Yeah, but I’m not,” Zuko says, shrugging. He doesn’t care. He’s the epitome of nonchalance. Except Sokka has a knowing look in his eyes so he scrambles for an excuse. “Besides, my uncle will kill me if i don’t invite you for dinner.”
“I can never say no to dinner,” Sokka says, but he still has that look in his eyes and a sweet smile on his face.
They eat outside, which is good because Uncle has a loud laugh and Sokka is very funny. After dinner Sokka offers to help with the dishes like a gentleman, but Iroh waves them off and suggests they go watch a movie or something.
Zuko and Sokka go down to the basement, which is far enough from Azula that they don't need to keep the TV as quiet as they do, but that doesn't stop them from huddling close to the TV with the volume low, their legs touching as they share the popcorn, laughing quietly at the movie together.

Katara had a bad day. The type of day where all she wanted to do was go home and wrap herself up in a blanket burrito and ignore all of her friends' messages.
Zuko, though, does not listen to her request to be alone and appears at her door with all of the necessities needed to make her feel better.
Comfort food, wine, trashy movies, and dancing with no music on. A perfect end to a terrible day.
