The stupid knowledge that this is it for him. That Liam is it.

Inspired by Complicated Freak, Velvet Goldmine, whatever David Bowie/Mick Jagger/Iggy Pop/Lou Reed had going on, and a dash of Louis at the barricade.

Tattoos were his weakness and he couldn’t very well embarrass himself more in front of the man. So he focused on the man’s face again. He seemed to be only a year or two older than Harry and he could immediately tell why Niall was comfortable leaving Harry with…whatever his name is. He probably should find that out at some point. That’d be good to know for a potential friend, or boyfriend.

Y'all SHOWED UP for this category and I am LOVING IT. You submitted 27 fics that deserve more love to highlight, and I am honoured to hold them up before you and say LOOKIT THESE TASTY MORSELS. They may have under 1,000 hits now, but I'm sure they won't for long!

Reccer says: Somehow it feels like 100k fic when it's only 5 - there's so much emotion and story packed in. Absolutely beautifully written, too.

Reccer says: Fascinating story with great tension and well executed surprises. Great worldbuilding! This was probably my favorite fic from 2023. I love love love sci-fi, and this was brilliant and mysterious and creepy and I am absolutely holding out hope that the author will write a longer au of this world.

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

I always really struggle with my Big Bang, and this year was no different. There was a lot of math involved, and a lot of schedules to make sure that the time travel all worked and the dates were accurate. I am really proud of how it turned out though, and the art (by the wonderful @monpetithl) is absolutely stunning.

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

I suppose by default I'm 'least proud' of some fics, since I'm more proud of others, but in general, I'm very proud of everything I published this year.

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

This is from (now I realize that the world outside) it's bigger than me

His throat feels dry and his face looks flushed, and there’s a moment where he contemplates dunking his head under the tap, but he doesn’t want to keep the fans waiting, even if he knows that his band is excellent at keeping the crowd entertained.

Or at least, they usually are. But right now, heading through the hallway back to the stage, all he can hear is silence.

Louis feels his heartbeat kick up a notch, and even though he knows that it’s ridiculous and highly implausible, there’s a brief moment where he wonders if everyone has just up and left. Maybe they’ve had enough. Maybe they only came here to see if he was willing to confirm the rumours, and now that he hasn’t, they’re leaving.

His palms are sweating, making him wipe them on his jeans, and it’s only when the band starts playing the intro to Bigger Than Me that they had come up with for the tour that Louis has the courage to step back onto the stage.

He has just opened his mouth for the first line – when somebody told me I would change – when it sinks in what he’s looking at.

Where the crowd is usually colourful, little rainbow flags showing up throughout the songs, or being held up en masse during a fan project for Only the Brave, it’s almost muted now, blacks and whites and greys.

And purple.

It is a sea of flags. A sea of ace flags.

Louis is vaguely aware that the band has started the intro for the third time. He can hear the cheers, the chants, can see the banners that are being held up by people on the balcony. We love you Louis, they read. We need you and you’ve got us.

His blood is rushing through his ears and he’s pretty sure he’s about two seconds from crying, and there is no way in hell that he’s going to be able to sing this song right now. It’s not even because it’s one of the harder songs in his set and he can feel his throat closing up. But he feels like he needs to acknowledge this. Because while he might not acknowledge it in the press, might play coy, these are his fans. These are the people that get him. The people that understand and support and love him, and they’re right. He’s got them. No matter what else, he’s got these people in his corner.

5. Share or describe a favorite review you received:

So my favourite review wasn't actually written. It was a friend of mine, at the concert in Paris, locking eyes with me during Bigger Than Me, and the two of us sharing a moment because we knew.

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Honestly, a lot of the year. I've written on something every month, but I've had months where I barely made 5K, if that. I've also had periods where my health was just utterly shit, and periods where I was too busy (like in November, which I mostly spent hanging out with the amazing @chaotic-bells)

7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

Well, it is written but not published, but something happened in my Big Bang for 2024 where I was like "really?? this is what you're going with??" and I guess you'll have to find that moment in my fic when it posts.

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

I'm honestly not sure I did, though I feel like I wrote a lot more short fics this year, so I suppose in that regard I grew by being able to write shorter things.

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

I mostly just hope to continue being able to write, continue loving writing, because for a while this year I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue being a writer in this fandom. But I got lovingly told that there was no way I wasn't doing the Big Bang next year, and then I got matched up with an amazing artist (hiii @whatagreatproblemtohave!) so that definitely helped in getting my mojo back.

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

I had wonderful guidance in the form of @londonfoginacup who told me a) you are not dropping out of the big bang and b) how about you rewrite the fic in Zayn's perspective, which has helped A LOT. I've also had an absolutely wonderful friend in @beardyboyzx who has read through a lot of my fics, has offered advice, a sounding board, and anything I could ask for. My beta, as always, is the wonderful @foullovehideout who is just the best person I could ask for. I had such a wonderful time seeing them again this year too.

And then there's the people that I've written with! Most notably, @jacaranda-bloom who is my standard writing buddy, though we've not been able to write together as often as last year, she's still helped me stay committed to my writing and I wouldn't have been able to publish as many fics if it weren't for our sprints.

Lastly, there's the beautiful people from the @1dcreatorclubhouse who have been just wonderful and a great source of joy and comfort.

11. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

Honestly it always does. Mostly this year in the aro/ace characters, because they are me and I am them.

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

I don't think it's new, really, but a) write what you want to write and b) don't forget that writing is a muscle, it needs to be trained just like anything else. You can't expect the same ease that you felt while writing daily when you end up not having been able to write for a while. Give yourself grace, and above all, believe in yourself and the stories you want to tell. They'll be loved by so many people!

13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

Definitely my Big Bang for 2024. It's a struggle and really outside of my wheelhouse, but I'm excited to see where it ends up going. I am also super intrigued by the possible 1daroacefest that @red-pandaaa was running a poll for (you can vote here) so depending on when it runs I definitely want to participate. And I'm thinking I might dabble in some F1 fic next year!

Writing 2022

I was tagged by the lovely @starsweredible to do this little writing review on myself. 1. Number of stories posted to AO3: 6 2. Word count posted for the year: 272,972 3. Fandoms I wrote for: One Direction 4. Pairings: Harry/Louis 5. Story with the most: babydoll blues Kudos: 1182 Bookmarks: 527 Comment threads: 164 6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): into that goodnight : my peter pan au. I think it is my favorite for a number of reasons but mostly because it solidified my love of world building and fairy tales. So often times, we surround ourselves with fanfic that is based in the common world. We write these elaborate meet cutes and angsty longing and these concrete, real world issues. It’s necessary and important, but I sometimes like to have fun with my creativity. I don’t want to think about the world around me. I want to think about the world in my head. And I’ve loved Peter Pan for ages and surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of Peter Pan aus for this fandom. It really allowed me to stretch my fingers so to say and make a double fan fic. It is a fan fic about Peter Pan as much as it’s a fan fic about Larry. I got to write all my favorite things and then more, while sticking true to the characters of Harry and Louis. It might not be my most popular, but I think it’s my most genuine Jennifer fic. It’s like a glimpse inside of my mind. 7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): i want to be just as close as the holy ghost is – I know this might come as a shock to some, but I really feel like I started to write something important and then I dropped the ball a little. I think as a writer, I sometimes get too caught up in the details and forget to push the story along and then it’s too late. Thankfully, I think I get to take the basic concept of the fic and reapply it to a fic I’m working on for the spring. So, we shall see if I do any better. 8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: Every review. Every single one. When I was in college for Creative Writing, I was often ostracized from my classes. I was told that I’m a terrible writer, that I lack depth and imagination, and that my prose was flat. It was really a struggle for me to be constantly surrounded by these people who I thought were like minded but took every opportunity to belittle and put down my work. It was so bad that I nearly dropped out and pursued something else. So, when I thank someone for their comments or I tell them I’m so flattered, I don’t think people really grasp how much it means to me. How it means the whole world. Because for so long, I thought I had no talent at all and just wrote because I couldn’t not write. And to have someone tell me they liked it or they stayed up to read it or they’re obsessed over one detail I put in specifically for a clever reader to find – it’s like it heals one more bruise, one more cut, and I can finally feel like okay. Maybe I’ve got something here. Maybe I’m worthy of something. 9. A time when writing was really, really hard: The end of this year with my Oli Fic, it was cripplingly difficult for me to write. I think I second guessed myself so much with that fic. It had to be perfect. It had to be a careful look into the ideas of growing up and changing oneself and finding your place when your best friend suddenly isn’t only yours. I had to make sure that it was believable and heart wrenching and honest and raw. And I had to play homage to the fact that Oli really has been Louis’ shadow this whole time. That it means something to keep your Lancelot next to you. But I suffered for that fic and I’m proud that I got to publish it because I almost didn’t. 10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I really fell in love with Oli in my Oli Fic but I also really, really loved Zayn in it. I think there is something so powerful about the Zouis friendship. And I think Zayn, even though he was younger, was very much a support system for Louis. Like there was more than just friendship there, more than brotherhood, and the way I got to write him being defensive of Louis but also Harry – Harry who it is clear that Zayn loved so much. It means a lot to me that I write Zayn as the person he is, not the villain so many people paint him out to be. 11. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

"You're a mermaid!" Harry scrambles forward, sinks his knees into the water to get a better look at her. "A real mermaid."

"I suppose that you might call me that." The mermaid grins, her teeth sharp in her mouth, pointed much like a shark's. "That's what you and your Lost Boys do."

"My Lost Boys?" Harry feels his face warm up, more delighted than he cares to admit about the phrasing. "You mean Louis' Lost Boys."

"Yes, but also yours. You're Louis' Harry, aren't you?" The mermaid gives a small shake of her tail, pushing herself forward toward the rocks again.

"I suppose." Shrugging a bit, Harry bites at his bottom lip, gaze turned toward the water. He doesn't know if he should agree with her or deny it. Sometimes it feels so much like Louis doesn't even see Harry and other times, it feels like Louis can’t see anything else. Especially at night when Harry wakes just a little from dreaming to see the vague shape of Louis swinging in a hammock in the top of the canopy. Like there is something unspoken between them, a secret, held under the moon.

"But you're not a Lost Boy." The mermaid shakes her head, drawing closer again to rest her arm on the rock, her cheek on top of her palm. "Are you?"

"I–" Harry can't help the way his grin seems frozen a bit in place, sliding just slightly into a grimace. He knows that to be true, too. Because even though Harry plays the games, does the make-believe, dances around the campfire with them – he's always felt a little separated, a little different. It's something he can't exactly explain and he loathes to bring it up. Would never want to seem ungrateful.

“Not a boy,” the mermaid clarifies thoughtfully, her fingers caressing along Harry’s calves, up to his knees. “Not a girl. Not either. But both.”

“Oh.”

Warmth spreads through Harry, sickly and unwell. He’s heard the same before, hurled slurs under breath, cruel names spit into his face. All for Harry who let his hair grow a little too long, has a soft face, soft hands, soft waist. Harry, who always played the princess in all of the orphanage games, who let older boys touch his cheek and whisper to him under the cover of darkness. He knows what people say about him.

“Furrowing again.” The mermaid shakes her head, fingertips tracing a slow circle over Harry’s knee. “Why are you so worried? I’m just like you.”

“Are you?” Harry hesitates, wants to tug down his nightshirt, wishes he was wearing trousers at least. There had been no time when Louis had come through the door, though. Harry hadn’t thought of anything practical, too entranced by the possibility that things might be better, that there was hope.

“I’m not a girl nor am I a fish.” Splashing her tail out of the water, the mermaid makes a gesture down the length of her body. “I’m both. And that is alright, isn’t it? Can’t be anything other than what I am.”

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: I am trying my hardest to trust myself and go with my gut when it comes to my writing. I don’t know where this creativity comes from. I don’t know how I do it. I don’t outline. I don’t follow any of the rules. I just write. And it works. So maybe I am learning to trust that more. 13. How do you hope to grow next year: I think I grew courage to take risks and write the things that I like. I love writing genre bent writing and I think in the next year, you’re going to see some really interesting concepts come out of me. 14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer, beta, cheerleader, etc): Oh god, none of this. Absolutely none would be possible without Aria @polaroidlouis. She has been an absolute godsend in supporting me and talking me through plots and reassuring me when I want to throw my towel in and give up. I can honestly say you wouldn’t have gotten a single fic out of me this year without her. Also, Mari, @hlkings my darling. She is the captain of my fanclub for a reason. The support and devotion I feel from her is immeasurable. She always tells me to keep going, to keep doing it, that I’ve got it. I don’t know how to thank her but I try to every day. Also strong supports would be Gina @twopoppies, Alex @momrryrights, Nikki @lovingstheantidote, Nikee @beelou, Aaliyah @larrysballetslippers so many others. my 1d stan story is very longwinded hsksj but basically i hated them for the first 3 years because i was annoying and ~ not like other girls ~ but then i had a really bad breakup at 16 and basically had nothing to cling onto and somehow ended up a 1d fan lmao. I was primarily a harry girl at first and then slipped into larry and then disappeared a bit post-hiatus and only really kept up with harry before finding louis again during lockdown in 2020 and he’s had my heart since then, i came back to the fandom around that time too. Nowadays I wouldn’t say I was heavily involved, i don’t really enjoy the larrie side anymore and i’m not super active on twitter anymore but i’ll always be about to support louis even if it’s just a quick thing. I have a lot of other complicated feelings around it but this is already too much of a rant shskdj basically i’m here but i’m not here, idc about 1d anymore and i’m mostly here for my friends and louis tweets, and i’ll write fics if people continue to want them because i like writing!

Ode To Joy

“You know.” Louis snapped out of his trance as Ali spoke once again. “When you fell asleep, he stood by your side. He would tell you the story of the sleeping beauty, or sometimes he would try and recite the lyrics of Ode to Joy, only to fail and laugh because he has no passion for reciting classical German music.”

Louis doesn't like to sleep. When he does, robbers get caught, the world continues to spin, and people forget about him. Quite frankly, the shortest he's ever slept is two months, which is yet to be beaten.

AU where Louis is the modern day sleeping beauty and Harry just wants to remember him.

A whistle erupted inside the saloon and Harry whipped his head around to catch where the noise is coming from. Of course. Of fucking course.

He glared and he just wants to wipe that arrogant smirk on the cowboy's lips, wants to grab his Stetson Hat and tear it into pieces, and he loathes him so much that he considers tying him up just to give him a not-so-subtle punch and go back to Idaho afterwards.

AU where Harry is a photographer and Louis is a cowboy with a dark past and maybe a darker present.
