đŸŒ± Deeco's ZoSan Fic Rec List đŸ„
Hello hello! This is going to be a slight rework for my zosan fic rec list, because I wanted to re-organize it and add some new fics while I'm at it, so this is going to be longer than the first. Feel free to check it out!
Latest update: November 2023
Because I started making this list long before August 2023, I won't add any fics that specifically take place in live-action setting because I haven't read much of them yet. I might consider updating this list to add fics with live-action setting in the future.
—GEN/T FICS
Sketches of Life (and Love) by Fledgling (Teen, 2.9k)
An exploration of a headcanon where Sanji likes to draw in his free time. This fic always leaves me with a warm feeling every time I read it because how endearingly sweet it is. It’s basically a domestic fluff story about both ZoSan and the Strawhats crew in general.
green with envy blues by adietxt (Gen, 1.5k)
A cute fic about Zoro being jealous. Jealous!Zoro has been one of those tropes that make me screech like a feral animal every time I come across it and this fic does exactly that. It’s pretty short and simple but it captures the characters very well. It’s set during pre-timeskip which makes it even better to me because pre-TS Zoro possesses that boyish quality that post-TS Zoro doesn’t necessarily have anymore.  OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Fuck, Marry, Kill (or, how Usopp becomes the best matchmaker of the sea without really trying) (Teen, 4.8k) — Usopp introduces the Strawhats to a game that ends up causing Sanji to overthink things - a lot of things.
Old Men Blues by postmoderne (Gen, 2k)
Quoting directly from the fic’s summary, “Sanji and Zoro: two ancient fucks (in love).” because this is exactly that, a story about old men ZoSan. Old Zoro and old Sanji are both still as stubborn as ever and it’s endearing. OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Something Golden (Teen, 1.6k) — Canon reimagining where Zoro met Sanji at the Baratie pre-series.
Meet me under the orange tree by candelina (Gen, 3.9k)
A canon divergence AU where Zoro and Sanji met as kids, as Zeff opened up Baratie in Zoro’s hometown. It’s an adorable and heartwarming story of little Zoro and little Sanji’s friendship. There’s also a part two which is also worth reading. OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: The whole world will know (2.3k) — Old men ZoSan fic, this one involves Zoro deliberately showing himself to the Marines for god knows what. It’s sweet, it’s beautiful, and it shows that Zoro is as reckless and idiotic as he is a loving, devoted husband.
Zoro’s Boyfriend, Who Lives In Canada by donutsandcoffee (Gen, 2.6k)
Modern AU, where Zoro’s friends try to stop him from believing that his imaginary, totally made-up boyfriend actually exists. Of course Zoro’s boyfriend doesn’t actually exist, because with the way Zoro describes him he’s way too perfect to exist and how can anyone so perfect actually exist? A hilarious story of misunderstandings.  OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Prison Blues (Teen, 2.8k) and it’s a long way forward (Teen, 5k) — serve as both a ZoSan story and a great Sanji character study.
The Three of Swords by 8ball (Teen, 30k, multi-chapters & completed)
A medieval AU with knight Zoro and prince Sanji, a concept that starts to really grow on me after I begin to read this fic. In this story, Zoro is a cursed knight appointed to serve Sanji, a kind-hearted prince whom Zoro eventually pines over. It’s a beautiful take of prince and knight AU; devoted knight Zoro is something that I didn’t know I need. It also has a sequel.  OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: The Ocean's Child series — a canon-divergence mermaid!Sanji AU
(I Want) Someone to Love Me by three_days_late (Teen, 7.9k)
Sanji is about to turn 17, so he hopes that he can get his first kiss before that. A cute high school AU that involves everyone wanting to kiss Sanji (honestly, who doesn’t) but only one person gets to actually do it.  OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Blood Red (Teen, 400 words) — this might be a little biased because this fic is inspired by my comic, but it’s also a perfectly good reason why I must add it here; this fic is able to capture the spirit of the comic perfectly. If you want to read a short exposition of Zoro showing his darker, yet protective side, then this fic is worth the read. Warning for blood & hints of violence. The Christmas Swap (Teen, 37k, multi-chapters & completed) — a modern AU in which Sanji and Reiju switch partners during Christmas so they can attend their family gathering without having to come out as queer. It’s a wonderful story about family, relationships, and the struggles of maintaining those things as a queer person. The Only Way Out (Is Through) (Teen, 4.8k) — a beautiful Prince Sanji and Knight Zoro story, where circumstances forced them to separate & unable to be together. It also has a side Nami/Vivi. I Have Loved You for 1000 Years (I'll Love You for 1000 More) (Teen, 8.9k) — Another Prince Sanji & Knight Zoro AU involving time travel & the sacrifices you go through for the ones you love.
Curly Angel by APTX & translated to English by NMTD (Teen, 9.4k, two chapters & completed)
In this alternative canon universe, everyone has a guardian angel, and Zoro’s just happened to be Sanji. Hilarity ensues.
Let me be your Inspiration by TheWanderers (Teen, 19.8k)
College AU where Sanji is an artist/painter - another fic that explores Sanji as someone with an artistic streak, but also so much more. It’s a beautiful story that starts out with Zoro having to model for Sanji’s painting but ends up falling in love with him. I love the way the author adapts the characters’ canon backstory into this universe.
Retrogade by Hazel_Athena (Teen, 21.9k, two-chapters & completed)
Sanji got badly injured after a fight, and ends up losing a big chunk of memories - it doesn’t bother him too much until he notices how weird Zoro starts to act around him. A really good temporary amnesia fic with some really delicious pining!Zoro material. OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Medieval ZoSan series — a medieval arranged marriage AU. Renegade Queen (Teen, 76k, multi-chapters & completed) — a canon divergent AU where Sora lives and takes all her children with her - it's more of a Vinsmoke family story with ZoSan on the side.
Nothing Happened (Gen, 16k, multi-chapters & completed)
An angsty survival story where the Strawhats get stranded in a middle of the seas with no means to escape and rapidly declining food stock. This fic does a really good job at keeping you in suspense, and the way it handles Zoro and Sanji's relationship destroyed me emotionally. OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: Each A Love Song (Gen, 8.6k) — Sanji is frustrated because Zoro’s surprisingly popular with women when he doesn’t even like them back. A story of a confused Sanji trying to find love and being the World’s Most Oblivious Man. Three Blades (Gen, 5k) — a Western AU where Sanji is a saloon owner and Zoro is a bounty hunter.
The Melody of Missing You by BleuReivers (Teen, 11k)
Zoro is forced to confront his feelings in the aftermath of Sanji's departure during the Whole Cake Island arc. I love the way this story examines Zoro's softer, more vulnerable side in a painfully beautiful way, and the whole fic has this hazy, dream-like vibe that really fits with the plot.
Sick Day by Styx_in_the_mud (Teen, 1.3k)
Zoro gets sick, and Sanji takes care of him. A short sick!fic with a simple premise but very cute nonetheless.
—MATURE/EXPLICIT FICS
Deep by CharlieNozaki (Mature, 171k, multi-chapters & completed)
This is There Are Many Benefits to Being A Marine Biologist: The Fic. Okay jokes aside, this is a modern fantasy AU fic where merpeople exist and it mainly tells about marine biologist Sanji and merman Zoro. It has an interesting premise and deals with some heavy subjects in later chapters, hence the Mature tag. It has a sequel, though it's currently ongoing. OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: The Game — a Modern AU with slight fantasy-ish element, where Zoro and Sanji are young orphans who find a mysterious game that might be able to change their lives.
Delphinium by toastie_bread (Mature, 39k, multi-chapters & completed)
Set in modern AU, stylist Sanji meets with police detective Zoro after his beauty salon got robbed; a cute rom-com story. There's also a side LawLu.
Steady, As She Goes by auspizien (Explicit, 155k, multi-chapters & completed)
I’ve always loved auspizien’s fics and this is the one fic that made me fall in love with their writing. This is a modern AU story where Zoro is an ex-agent with PTSD who meets and befriends Sanji, a paramedic. It’s a multi-chapter fic filled with humor, angst, pining, action, and good ol’ slow-burn.  OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: The Android Acquaintance (Explicit, 10k) — dystopian cyberpunk AU with android Sanji and bounty hunter Zoro. This fic partly inspires me to make the Blade Runner 2049 ZoSan art!
The Tribulations of Temptation by SweetyGreeny (Explicit, 18.5k)
Zoro accidentally sees Ace and Sanji doing
the do, and then spends days after that feeling shocked, confused, angry, and disappointed.  A delicious story of pining and jealous Zoro. There’s a slight AceSan in the beginning but the endgame is still ZoSan.   OTHER FICS FROM THIS AUTHOR: A Siren’s Sinking Song (Teen, 12k) — a canon-divergent AU where Sanji is a siren who one day meets a peculiar swordsman from a wandering ship; this story is beautiful and I love the idea of siren!Sanji, but please note the major character death TW.  The Burden of Blondes (Explicit, 11k) — Sanji finds out that Zoro has a thing for blondes, and for some reason he feels uneasy. A fun story with some good smut, and inspired me to make an art loosely based on it.
Thy Fearful Symmetry by Harubo (Explicit, 14.3k)
A modern AU where Sanji is a tourist visiting a tiger reserve during a family vacation and Zoro is a detective investigating a poaching ring. All of Harubo’s fics are godsend but I particularly love this one because the setting reads like a perfect rom-com drama movie about a stressed, overworked chef meeting a handsome detective. There’s also a nice tidbit where the Vinsmoke siblings are trying to get along with each other.
Done Dirt Cheap by Balderdashfromafool (Explicit, 99.7k, multi-chapters & completed)
A Western ZoSan AU, where Zoro is an outlaw and Sanji is a small town chef. This one is fun and lovely, and as someone who doesn’t read a lot of Western-themed stories, I love the way the author describes the Western setting in this fic.
The Fox's Heart by Shadowcatxx (Explicit, 32k, multi-chapters & completed)
Historical/mythological AU where fox spirit Sanji falls in love with human samurai Zoro. A pretty heavy story about forbidden romance but ends with a happy ending. The fic deals with some period-typical issues like homophobia, misogyny, sexism, and transphobia, as well as some depictions of violence and (slight) animal abuse, so please be aware of that.
Mine by burnwaywardbird (Explicit, 4k)
A pure PWP fic of Zoro “punishing” Sanji for flirting with strangers. Super kinky and involves slight dom/sub undertones. Also, while this is mostly pure PWP, this fic is technically part of a series and while can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend to read the other parts as well (especially the ones preceding this fic).
pretty sanji series (Pretty & Surprise) by kickingsanji (12.6k in total)
A series of fics exploring Sanji's femininity and Zoro discovering that he has a thing for Sanji being pretty & wearing pretty things. As a Pretty Sanji truther, I love these fics to bits, not only because it handles Sanji dealing with his insecurities when it comes to his gender expression in a gentle, respectful way, but also because the smut is very good.
All Will be Well by thecrownofclowns (Explicit, 17k)
An incredibly sad but sweet zombie apocalypse AU about Sanji trying to survive the zombie outbreak all by himself, before eventually meeting Zoro. One of my favorite hurt/comfort fics.
—OMEGAVERSE (ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA) FICS
Onigiri by himaaneko (Teen, 2.3k)
Very cute domestic family fic of Zoro, Sanji, and their son. For those who prefers a softer omegaverse with family/love-children fluff on the side, this fic is for you.
Bite Me by Shadowcatxxx (Mature, 15k, two-chapters & completed)
Sanji got attacked while he was alone on the ship, causing him to go into heat. Zoro tries to help, but not without consequences. An exposition on how Zoro and Sanji handle their dynamics, and their feelings towards each other. Please mind the tags with this one.
fever by adietxt (Explicit, 6.4k, multi-chapters & completed)
I'm pretty sure that this is the first omegaverse ZoSan story that I have ever read, and one of the best ones I've ever read for a good reason. It involves Sanji, who suddenly got into his heat, and Zoro, the first one to discover Sanji in heat and learns for the first time he's an omega. I won't spoil anything, but I can say that the ending is great, the porn is delicious, and Zoro being possessive is exquisite.
Steps of Calidity by auspizien (Explicit, 42k, multi-chapters & completed)
I'm gonna preface this by saying that the smut here is ungodly good and very, very hot - and to be perfectly honest, one of the main reasons why I like this fic so much. But the plot is just as good and has an interesting take of how omegaverse dynamics might work in a modern world. Don't forget to mind the tags as well.
Sweet by ElAlmaDelMar (Explicit, 1.8k)
Sanji starts lactating during his pregnancy; Zoro finds it very hot. This one is just straight up kinky. It's a sequel to another story but can be read as a standalone.

ZOSAN FIC REC
Here is some of my fave zosan fics. Some of these I read years ago and so I don't fully remember what theyre about but they we're good enough that I still have strong emotional attachments when I see the name. Most of them are things I've read recently. Literally all I do all day is homework and have an app tts fanfics to me like an audio book so there's quite a few of recs here. I am not the best at summeries but just trust me bro these are GOOD SHIT. I only provide the best. What I consider a good fic: - Takes place in the one piece world (I don't like modern aus) - Characters stay in character or if they do have changes from their canon portrayal there is a justifiable reason from within the story. - Solid story telling and arcs (even the shorter fics) - The Zosan dynamic is kept mostly how it is in canon they fight and bicker. (I know some like when they're soft with eachother like a loving married couple. You won't find much of that here) - Some of these have pervy sanji, que nose bleeds and ogling. With that out of the way here's the list!! Now to my fave zosan fic of all time and ironically enough the only fic taking place in a modern setting: Life is fine series. TW: Drug abuse, heavy angst, depression I have reread this twice and forced a friend to read it too. It is so amazing not just for the zosan but for the genuinely good story telling. You follow zoro reeling from his sudden loss of relationship with Sanji and falling down a...Well uh, path. It's fucked it's dark it's depressing and its fucking riviting. Alot of the time reading this you're just like WHY DID SANJI LEAVE HIM WHAT IS GOING ON??? Honestly I need to reread this again. Onto softer fics to heal your heart after that one: Honor in limits, his strengths in weakness By Hawksbrood
“Fucking hell cook, what happened to you?” Zoro demanded, voice low so as not to disturb the others sleeping nearby.
Sanji rolled his eyes. “What do you think? I told you we got in a fight earlier.”
“Not that, your fucking feet!”
The cook snarled at that, crushing his cigarette in his teeth. “What the fuck do you mean, my feet? They’re just feet!”
Zoro’s eyes widened, looking at the bruised flesh before him. This wasn’t that.
This was just so good and cute. I appreciate watching zoro appreciate sanji. They take care of eachother but in a way where theyre both still them yeah know? I appreciate how sanji is written letting himself be vulnerable but understanding that he's always gonna be crass cause it's just a part of who he is.
come on, come on (turn a little faster) by donutsandcoffee
The one where everyone thinks they’re dating, Sanji is oblivious, and Zoro takes everything in stride.
Sometimes a love story can go in reverse.
I reread this one recently and it's just soft and sweet. I like watching sanji flounder around. The gay panic is great.
a complete guide to falling in love by ThousandSunny Sanji was trained in the Bridal Arts; this does not go unnoticed by the rest of his crew. I read this like 3 years ago and I dont remember much but I do remember loving it!
Part Timer By 8ball Sanji really, really doesn't want to give Zoro a job at his restaurant. Zoro doesn't really even want to work there in the first place, but, well, there’s this thing with Sanji, and this thing with feelings and the whole thing is pretty damn stupid all together. Zeff just wants grandkids. He’s too old for this bullshit anyways. I am sure everyone knows 8ball very well they're like zosan famous but still just in case this one is really fucking good. Also read this 3 years ago so I don't remember much but I consider this a zosan classic. Onto the rated R Grand Buffet by asyndese Drunk fic!! If there was one thing Zoro knew, it was that you could always trust Sanji's inclinations to do a beautiful 180 as soon as he was drunk. Luckily, Zoro was more than equipped to handle it. I spent. 30 minutes. Trying to find this fic again because that's how much I loved it. It altered my brain chemistry. Sanji getting a nose job during sex is just. aaaaaaaaa. Read it. Cannot suggest enough. Horrors not yet known by Trixree
Sanji doesn’t know how he didn’t notice it before, is the thing. Of all the times he has seen Zoro shirtless (in battle, mostly) he just
never noticed. The problem is, once he has noticed, Sanji can’t seem to stop noticing. And neither can anyone else.
In which Zoro has a nipple piercing and Sanji has a Problem.
I recently reread this and the first time I read it I didn't really get the whole gender sanji shit. Now though???? Yeah another fic that rewired my brain chemistry. This fic opened doors for me it exposed me to a new world. Also sanji gay panic is in here and I live for that. It can be pretty raunchy (love that too) Three rounds with a tiger by KobochaKitsune Another drunk Fic!! also in modern times damn maybe I lied sdklfj
Liquid courage, drunken decisions, terrible euphemisms, and texts from last night, or: how to think entirely with the booze (and your dick) for once.
Or: By the time Sanji got to the party, everyone was already drunk.
I read this 3 years ago (theres a trend going on can you tell??) It also rewired my brain chemistry (from this point on just assume all of these nsfw fics rewired my brain chemistry each of these opened doors for me. This one opened the doors to bottom zoro.) Fucking 20k words of just pwp. I dont even know how the author did that bro like damn. Nature of things by stark_black Tw: Sex work and prostitutes When the Sunny docks, Sanji and Zoro sometimes seek out relief in some not so savory places. After crossing paths in town on more than one occasion, the two find they have a lot more in common than they would like to admit. I hunted this down for like fucking hours a couple of weeks ago because it was that good. Stark_Black has a fucking library worth of zosan fics this one is a classic to me. But if you want more content check out his other fics I think they have like over 100 zosan its kinda insane. Coregasm by Yakarmi
Sanji discovers that sometimes, Zoro has orgasms while he lifts.
-----
“You
” Sanji trailed off, gaze turning down as he licked his lips. Pink tongue darting out nervously. “You orgasm when you exercise?”
Zoro clenched his jaw. Shrugged. Trying to act nonchalant.
“Sometimes.”
Sanji’s eye went wide, and like his mouth had suddenly been liberated from his brain, blurted out, “that’s so fucking hot,” before clamping his hands over his mouth. His cigarette fell from his mouth, bouncing soundlessly on the ground.
Bro bestie, the way this put me on nose bleed Sanji. Perv sanji. I need that gif thats like mmm cause man this is good. Ending this fic rec with a BANG we have
Contingencies and Congruencies by PeaceSignDisasterBi
Somewhere between finishing the bottles of alcohol and mugs of beer, the crew comes together to create a contingency plan for something that may-or-may-not-happen during their time on the Grand Line and beyond. Usopp thinks it's more likely than bumping into zombies, Zoro wants to stay out of this, Sanji is just going with the flow, and Nami may or may not keep things legally binding and above board with consistent consensual acquiescence. Robin finds it all amusing.
The damn chart stays in the locked drawer in her desk, split into three neat categories: Devil Fruit Powers, Science, and Magic. Each represents whatever they're hit with but also categorizes the amount of self-control the person has during.
AKA: 5 times Zoro and Sanji had to help each other as Consensual Helpers of Dubious Consent + 1 Time There Was Nothing Dubious At All
Ok this is 152k long its pretty insane. It regoes over the arcs so throughly so carefully that I literally had to question my memory because I havent experienced alot of these arcs in a while (it's one of the reasons im rewatching one piece). I will say despite how amazing and well written this is I had a hard time comprehending sometimes. now I was sick at the time of reading this so that might be why but sometimes the way things were phrased felt like yoda talking. I think it's just me though. I'm not used to big words :( And thats a wrap!! These arent even all the ones I wanted to include I have at least 20 more off the top of my head but I'll save that for another day. I hope you find joy in these fics Like i did I'll def do another one of these as cause I didnt even touch my sanji centric fics or germa 66 or just in general the best sanji fanfic writers. (Mentioned some of them like 8ball, thousand sunny and donuts and coffee.) Best of luck to yall and let me know what you think!

Zosan cat fic anthology (plus the tiger Zoro figure I had just finished making a little while ago!)
Fic links, comments and a photo of my cat below:
Having read a few zosan cat-related fics, I thought it would be really fun to make a small, cat themed zosan anthology, and here it is! To my delight, I found a paw print font (pawprints on defont) but to my annoyance it had no option to have no pawprints on the letters which made it look too busy, nor was there already a version of the font without pawprints, so for the first time I broke out fontforge to make my own version of the font in which I dropped the pawprints. I also drew little cat Zoros and Sanji's for each of the main stories title pages; bookbinding really is a good mash of different hobbies and skills I swear. Also on the mention of other hobbies, I was well pleased that I finished the book and my tiger Zoro figure relatively closely so I could take a photo of them together; here's the post for more photos of the figure and the post for the progress pics!
Also amusingly, when I originally was putting together the anthology, I had not added the second part of stay, and had assumed it would be a somewhat thinner small volume then it is... Which is rather incorrect. I do have to say it's a truly delightful proportion, being this thick and small! I'm also quite pleased at how the cover turned out, with the little gold pawprints. Originally for the title I was going to find a different name and then just went for the one I had originally named the file after, since it's well themed. Wait actually I think I was going to use ships cat and just now realized that... Ooops. Oh well. Also, as a bonus: here's my old cat hanging out on my lap while I was working on the gold foiling!
Tumblr media
Fics include:
Stay by @itsmylifekay (NW, 21.5 k)
Sanji doesn't know what he's done in a past life to deserve this, but somehow when Zoro gets turned into a cat he's the one stuck on babysitting duty. How someone that small can cause so much trouble, he'll never understand.
But even after all the hell he's put through, he still manages to fall in love.
Without Words (NW, 3.8 k)
(stay part ii)
Sanji likes to dote on the people he cares about, likes to express himself fully and without reservation. But sometimes that’s hard to do living on a pirate ship, especially when the person he wants to be affectionate with is a prickly, stubborn asshole of a man.
Or, Zoro gets a bath.
Cat's Cradle by Hazel_Athena (T, 21.5k)
In which a run in with a new Devil Fruit user leaves Sanji with an unexpectedly furry problem.
Ship's Cat by @helloharubo (T, 3k)
The Going Merry has a mouse infestation. Despite Usopp's attempts, Sanji has yet to find a solution to the problem. Enter Zoro, the world's deadliest mouser.
or
Zoro is the ship's cat and expects rewards.

OPLA Zosan Fic Rec (P1)
For the truth, break me loose by MarionetteFtHJM
“What?” He grunts, crossing his arms over his chest
“What is your problem with Sanji?” She hisses lowly.
He shrugs but keeps silent. He was hoping it would take her longer to notice that there indeed was a problem. Honestly, he thought he’d have a few more days at least. But she’s quick and sharp and nothing escapes her eye.
“Nothing, he’s just annoying.” He settles on saying and it’s true, she can’t deny it and he sees the protest forming on her lips. “He’s annoying.” He repeats, trying to urge her to drop the subject but she seems to instead read something in his inflection because her eyes widen and her mouth rounds.
“Oh, Zoro.” The shock quickly morphs into a sly grin that he doesn’t like one bit – her eyes are sparkling.
aka Zoro has a lot of pent up emotions about Sanji and how annoying he is.
Word Count: 13,227 - Enemies to Lovers, Getting Together, Flirting, First Time, OPLA, Explicit
For All The Times I Never Could (I’ll Be Good) by Apocalypic_Space_They
After his defeat at the hands of Dracule Mihawk, Zoro wakes up back on the ship, feeling equally physically and emotionally beat.
Luckily the Straw hat pirates had a distracting new cook who was determined to get him to stop brooding and eat.
Zoro doesn't actually hate that.
Aka Sanji brings Zoro soup, they snarky flirt.
Soup is maybe Zoro's new favorite thing.
Word Count: 3,156 - Pre-Relationship, Mild Hurt/Comfort, Food as a Metaphor for Love, Getting to Know Each Other, Fluff, OPLA
Laws of Men by Blasphemyandtheboys
Sanji has a lot to learn about love and attraction, the Strawhat pirates are his unwitting teachers.

Word Count: 5,087 - Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Angst and Feels, OPLA

It’s surprisingly not as easy as his crew members make it seem to compliment Sanji’s food.

a single nail, a single ruby by okayprairie
In a large bowl, beat a cup of heavy cream with a tablespoon of powdered sugar and a dash of vanilla until stiff peaks form.
"Stiff peaks?” Zoro mutters, frowning, flipping the page back and forth. The Going Merry lilts gently beneath his feet. “What the hell are stiff peaks?”
/ / /
Sanji eats like a line cook. Zoro learns the uses for tenderness.
Word Count: 4,181 - Getting to Know Each Other, Food, Crew As a Family, Tender, OPLA
How to save a life by anthea_tesdinic
Zoro is very familiar with how heavy an unconscious body can be. He’s carried several hundred pounds worth of ruthless pirate captain many a time to collect his bounty. Somehow, none of them have felt as heavy as Sanji feels in his arms at that moment.

Light Passing Through
Sanji dreamed of a love he could hold with both hands and a worn wooden table and children all around it.
By now, Sanji had thrown away his chances at such a life.
He was a pirate and a chef.
He loved both his captain and his job.
He dreamed of a sea of abundance and life.
He was not stupid enough to long for more.
He tried to remember not to long for more.
But sometimes he wondered, what were the chances of meeting someone like that anyways? Someone you could love, and who would love you equally in return? Sanji wondered how anyone was supposed to know what love looked like. Was the woman selling him tomatoes in the last port the one who would love him in all his inadequacies? The math of finding true love was impossible, surely.
-
Zoro gets hurt and Sanji carries him back to the ship and watches over him.
Named after Visible World by Richard Siken because no one gets Sanji like Siken does.
1,438 words, General Audiences, Blood/Injury Mention
Link to read on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/60057658
Or read below the cut
It was supposed to be a simple mission, especially for the two of them. Go figure that the swordsman would find a way to get his abdomen slashed open the one moment Sanji wasn’t watching. Which led them to the situation they were in now.
“I’m bleeding on your prissy clothes” Zoro murmured against his neck, puffs of air, rough and broken by pain.
“Don’t worry, I’ll beat your ass later, Mossy.” Sanji’s voice was stained with dread and agony. The forest ground was smooth and he moved swiftly, trying not to jostle the swordsman on his back.
“Cook” Zoro said, voice wavering and sounding more distant by the second.
“Woah there, Marimo, stay with me,” Sanji huffed, gripping the white sheath of Wado with renewed vigor. He knew he was pressing bloody prints into the delicately engraved wood. Zoro would surely try to kill him later, when he realized that Sanji had grabbed the first sheath that would come off of Zoro with an easy yank. He would probably even kill Sanji from the grave if he heard the quiet groaning of the sheath where it was tucked beneath the brutish man’s ass.
Sanji thought of the brand new suit jacket he had tied around the swordsman’s bleeding torso. He didn’t feel that bad.
“Talk to me, shitty swordsman” Sanji prompted, squinting through the patterned shadows the trees threw on them, trying to estimate the distance back to The Thousand Sunny.
The man stayed silent, slumped forward with his nose pressing sharply into the back of Sanji’s neck.
“Hey!” Sanji hollered, trying to resist the urge to jostle the dying man.
“Hmmmm” Zoro groaned, one leg briefly kicking the air as if Sanji was waking him up from one of his naps on deck and he was being mildly inconvenienced.
“Hey Mossy, why three swords?” Sanji asked, not knowing where the question had come from and not caring. The ship was going to come into view any second, once the trees broke away to the shore. Anything to keep Zoro awake until then.
“Sanji-“ Zoro said quietly, causing Sanji to stumble, nearly sending both of them falling into a bank of thorny bushes. Zoro grunted with pain at the sudden movement but continued his low murmurs.
“Three, get it? Ichi, Ni, Sanji-“
Sanji shuddered despite himself. The swordsman was incoherent and was continuing to mumble about numbers and swords and Sanji. Sanji hated hearing about the number three and swords in the same sentence as his name.
As if by some kind of fate, the tree line appeared and in the distance, the Thousand Sunny glowed in the late afternoon sun. Sanji immediately kicked them upward, skywalking them straight to the infirmary doors on deck.
“Ok got it, we are almost there, hang on a little longer.” Sanji twisted, kicking the air with efficient pushes. In the distance, he saw movement on deck as the alarm was raised.
Behind him, Zoro whispered just barely loud enough to hear over the sea breeze and Usoop screaming for Chopper across the remaining beach.
“Two swords for my dream. And one sword for Kuina’s.”
With that, Zoro promptly passed out just before Sanji’s feet met the deck.
-
Sanji brushed the short spikes of green hair plastered to Zoro’s forehead back. His golden skin was pallid and wet with cold sweat. Sanji watched in the darkness of the infirmary as his own hand shook. He felt wrung-out and hollow, like the moonlight might pass right through him as it shone through the portholes.
Chopper snored quietly, head down on his desk, having collapsed after Zoro was stable and Sanji had brought him his late dinner. The young reindeer had eaten and turned back to making notes on the exact treatment Zoro had undergone. He had made it only a few more minutes before Sanji watched his head dip down with sleep.
Sanji glanced at Chopper now, chest tight with something like fear.
Sanji raised his hand, turning it slowly, watching the way the moonlight shone blue through his flesh. Illuminating him from within. The delicate bone of his hands, which he was always so careful to protect, were the only things capable of stopping the light. That didn’t seem right.
If anything should keep the light from passing through, it should be the ache in Sanji’s chest. Robin had once told him that moonlight was light from the sun rebounding off the moon’s surface to reach Earth. It seemed like a waste to block the light that had traveled all that way just before it landed on Zoro’s bandaged chest. Sanji dropped his hand to the cot, fingering at the worn blanket that was draped over Zoro’s legs. The moonlight shone on stark white bandages against golden skin.
Sanji thought of Zoro bleeding out on the deck of the Baratie. Clutching his sword, floating in a pool of tears and blood. His chest stretched open, singing death's sweet call into the salty morning air. Sanji had watched it all, stricken as a practical stranger danced the edge of life but still proclaimed his dream in spite of his suffering. All for a dream he was too inexperienced to realize. And yet, Sanji still remembered how he felt that morning. That was the morning he had decided to leave the only home he had ever loved enough to miss in favor of the All Blue. All this time, his journey had begun with the swordsmanïżœïżœïżœs blood.
In Sanji’s lap, Zoro’s three swords lay, sheaths scrubbed suspiciously clean. He did not dare to breathe it out loud, but Zoro had taught him something he would never again forget.
He did not need permission to chase his dream.
Sanji melted into Zoro’s side, three sheathed swords clanking softly. Sanji was desperate and cold and Zoro was warm with fever. Sanji leaned close, turning his face away from the portholes, as if the moon itself was watching. And gently, slowly, he pressed his lips against Zoro’s forehead.
-
For all the memories Sanji had of his mother, he couldn’t remember a single time she talked about his father.
When he was younger he thought that surely they had loved each other once. Sanji was never quite sure what had changed.
Sometimes though, in the years after his mother’s death, he would imagine what his parents had been like in love. He imagined that Sora made Judge soft, and that Judge made Sora brave. He dreamed of his family impossibly together, of tripping over his brothers when his mother called them all to dinner. He dreamed of a warm kitchen with a wooden table, crowded with chairs to accommodate a gaggle of children. He dreamed of his father resting a gentle hand on his mothers knee after she had finished serving the meal and sat down. Of the soft and knowing smile his mother would reply with.
When Sanji shook away his nightmares, clawing at his iron helmet, he would hold the image in his mind until it was worn like an old photograph.
When Sanji woke to the feeling of his stomach eating itself, he would imagine a warm kitchen with a love for himself.
When Sanji gasped awake in the men’s bunk room, he would drown out the sound of his captain's snores with his thoughts of children’s laughter.
So he did not long for more.
Instead, he bounced from place to place and found his meaning elsewhere.
This kiss has to last me the rest of my life, Sanji thought.
Surrounded by darkness, propped over Zoro’s unmoving form, with the scent of steel and blood in his nose, Sanji thought that he had never been so lucky. He could live out his life with just his dream and his crew if he just had this one kiss.
It was something new to remember when he woke up in the middle of the night.

Noble Hearts - Chapter 1
Prologue can be found HERE
ZoSan Royal AU
I’m still working on the title, but I wanted to start sharing some of what I have written before I post anything on AO3.
Summary: The threat of famine looms over the Kuraigana Kingdom as resources dwindle. Suspicion grips the royal Mihawk family when the prosperous Germa Kingdom offers aid by means of a transactional alliance. As tensions rise, the unforeseen connection between two princes may decide the fate of their kingdoms.
Sanji strode with purpose through the cold stone halls of the castle, the familiar weight of his crimson cloak trailing behind him. Though he had traversed these corridors countless times, each journey to the throne room felt like a daunting pilgrimage through the echoes of his past. The portraits of his father that adorned the walls seemed to loom over him with silent judgment, their painted eyes a constant reminder of the expectations he could never quite meet.
Thirteen years had passed since the tragic loss of his mother, yet the ache of her absence lingered within him like an open wound that refused to heal.
The memory of that fateful day, when the guards returned with Queen Sora's bloodied cloak, still haunted him. King Judge Vinsmoke angrily directed the blame on Sanji for the tragedy that had befallen their kingdom. In his father's eyes, Sanji was the cause of their loss, and by running for help Sanji was the embodiment of failure and disappointment. Judge’s punishment had been swift and merciless. For leaving his mother behind, Sanji was locked away in the dungeons for a full week; an iron mask clamped around his head to prevent him from eating.
In those lonely moments, with only his hunger pangs as company for his grief, Sanji made a vow to never be helpless in protecting his loved ones ever again.
Once he was released from the dungeons, Sanji began to make good on his promise. Day after day, he immersed himself in rigorous training, his commitment unyielding. Alone on the training grounds, he honed his skills with a relentless fervor, pushing himself until his feet blistered and bled.
Then came Zeff, the seasoned veteran of the castle kitchens. Concerned by Sanji's absence from his culinary domain, Zeff sought him out. The old man found Sanji alone and exhausted on the training grounds. Zeff had not only offered Sanji the comfort of his company but also the invaluable wisdom of his experience. Under Zeff's guidance, Sanji's prowess as a fighter flourished, his dedication under Zeff's teachings molded him into a formidable adversary, surpassing even his own siblings in combat.
Despite his newfound strength, Judge remained unmoved, his disdain for Sanji was as strong as ever. Sanji remained a weak link, a fragile shadow threatening to undermine the foundations of the Germa Kingdom. No amount of training, no display of skill or strength could erase the empathy that his mother had instilled within him, a trait that his father viewed as a fatal flaw.
Sanji approached the imposing doors of the throne room, where he was met with the familiar sight of his siblings awaiting entry. Reiju's small smile offered a fleeting moment of warmth amidst the cold indifference of his brothers.
The doors to the throne room swung open and Sanji offered a nod of gratitude to the servants who ushered them inside, a gesture of acknowledgment for their service.
“You don't bow to the help, idiot. They're meant to bow to us.” Yonji jeered, elbowing past Sanji with an air of superiority.
"It wasn't a bow." Sanji retorted through gritted teeth, shooting an irritated glare at his brother's retreating form.
"Pft, any form of acknowledgment to the lower class is beneath us." Niji chimed in, trailing behind Yonji with a disdainful sneer.
Meanwhile, Ichiji, the eldest of the Vinsmoke brothers, frowned disapprovingly at Sanji's modest gesture.
"Your brothers are right. It's disgraceful to stoop to such levels." Ichiji admonished sternly. "Remember your place."
Sanji's hands clenched into tight fists, the pressure of his nails digging into his palms as he fought to contain his rising frustration. In an attempt to distract himself, Sanji let his gaze sweep across the throne room, taking in its familiar imposing grandeur with a sense of disdain. The stone walls loomed above him, adorned with Judge’s gruesome trophies of conquest: the twisted horns of the Dracon.
The Dracons, with their humanoid yet dragon-like forms, were unsettling beasts. They possessed the ability to summon wings and talons at will, had a resilience against fire, and sought to destroy any living thing that crossed their path. These were the monsters Germa was at war with, like many other neighboring kingdoms. They were also the same creatures responsible for Queen Sora’s tragic death.
Despite his hatred for these beasts, Sanji couldn't shake the feeling that it was morally wrong to have their scalped horns displayed as trophies.
Judge stood before his throne, his stern expression radiated an aura of authority that commanded attention. His gaze bore into his children with unwavering intensity as they each took their seats at a polished table located at the foot of the stairs below him.
"I have gathered you all here to discuss our next plan of action in the war against the Dracons." Judge began, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade. "As you know, Kuraigana is a well-established kingdom. The might of their army has shielded them from the Dracon threat, allowing them to remain isolated from neighboring kingdoms... until now."
Sanji observed his father closely, noting the darkening of his expression and the fervent gleam in his eyes. It was a look he had seen many times before
the telltale sign of Judge's unyielding determination to achieve his objectives at any cost.
"Despite their success in repelling Dracon attacks, the Kuraigana Kingdom faces a new challenge. They struggle to feed their citizens, and their King sees it fit to accept aid from other realms. I will admit that I care little for the plight of their people, but if we can secure an alliance with Kuraigana and absorb their formidable army into our own, we will become an unstoppable force."
Sanji clenched his jaw upon hearing Judge's callous disregard for the suffering of others.
"So we are to be in talks of an alliance with their King.” Reiju spoke up next to Sanji. “What role do you require of us in all of this?”
Judge’s smile twisted into a sneer.
“King Mihawk is an unusual ruler. He never found himself a Queen to rule beside him, yet he has adopted two children of lower status to be his heirs to the throne.” There was a bitter edge to Judge’s words as he spoke.
“Are you sure we want to align ourselves with commoners like them?” Niji smirked, his brow raised in disbelief.
“King Mihawk is of royal blood. That is who I am conducting business with. His brats are of no importance to us.” Judge retorted, his stern gaze settling on Niji, silently chastising him for his impertinence. Niji’s smirk faltered, replaced by a more serious demeanor in the face of their father’s disapproval. With a begrudging sigh, Judge continued, “However, King Mihawk seems to hold his ‘children’ in high regards. He thinks they play vital roles when meeting with real royals. It is for this reason that he intends to bring them to Germa. I may not approve of this, but we can’t do anything that would jeopardize us getting control of their military.”
Sanji blinked in surprise at the sudden turn of events, his thoughts racing as he processed his father’s words. He exchanged a glance with Reiju to find that her eyes mirrored his own disbelief. Judge must really want control of the Kuraigana army if he is inviting those of non-royal lineage to be their guests.
“I expect Reiju and Sanji to be the ones to keep Mihawk’s mutts occupied during their stay.” Judge directed his attention to the two. Sanji’s surprise deepened at the unexpected responsibility thrust upon him. His eyes rose to meet Judge’s piercing gaze. His father’s cold eyes seemed to be gauging his reaction before pressing on. “You both are the most likely to be civil to the low-status royals. We do not want to cause any offense before the alliance is made.”
“Seems a bit pathetic to cater to low-class scum.” Ichiji scoffed at his sibling’s assigned task.
Judge’s eyes narrowed in anger. Sanji tensed, bracing for his father’s reprimand.
“Mind your tongue! We aren’t here to cater to anyone!” Judge’s wild eyes snapped to Ichiji. He descended from his throne, advancing towards the table with a darkening air of authority. “Every move we make serves to strengthen Germa’s standing. With the Kuraigana army at our disposal, we’ll be unstoppable. Mingling with Mihawk’s brood is a minor inconvenience, but I won’t tolerate any missteps. You don’t have to be friendly, but I expect you, Niji, and Yonji to keep your distance. One wrong word could ruin the entire alliance!”
Judge’s fist crashed down onto the table with a resounding thud, leaving a small crater of cracked stone in its wake. His long disheveled hair shrouded over his face, creating a dark shadow from which his eyes blazed with fury.
The tense atmosphere forced a chill silence to fall over the table. It was an oppressive choking feeling that they all knew well. It had only taken them one mistake in the past for them to all learn what would happen if any of them spoke against Judge. It was not one that would be repeated again, even to this day. None of the siblings dared to even draw breath when Judge’s anger turned violent.
After a few moments of tense silence, Reiju, with her characteristic grace and bravery, spoke up again. "How do you expect Sanji and me to handle King Mihawk's heirs?"
With a grunt, Judge removed his fist from the table, opting to run his hand through his hair to straighten the flyaways.
"He has a daughter known for her sorcery skills and a son who leads a pitifully small fraction of knights," Judge began, his pacing around the table emphasizing his words, positioning himself between Sanji and Reiju. “Reiju, you’ll oversee the sorceress’s accommodations, while Sanji will attend to the other. Keep them away from my negotiations with Mihawk. It’s a task so simple and straightforward that not even someone as useless as Sanji could mess it up.”
Sanji angrily curled his tongue behind his teeth, a surge of indignation rising within him, yet he held his composure.
“The Mihawks will be our guests for a week, expected to arrive in two days. Prepare accordingly for their reception. You are all dismissed.” Casting one last sharp look over his children, Judge turned sharply to leave the throne room. His cloak billowed behind him as he exited through the grand entrance.
“Well, that seemed like a waste of time.” Niji remarked as soon as Judge was out of earshot, pushing back his chair and rising to his feet. “I don’t get why I had to be here if Reiju and Sanji were the only ones given tasks.”
“On the contrary; we were given our own task,” Ichiji pointed out, eyeing the crater left in the table by their father's furious strike. “We're supposed to keep out of Reiju and Sanji's way while they entertain those lowlifes.”
“How dull.” Yonji chimed in, propping his chin on his hand. Then, his expression turned mischievous. Looking towards Sanji, the youngest of the Vinsmokes tauntingly spoke out, “Hey, Sanji, why not suggest a trip to the beach for your visitor? Worked wonders for you last time, didn't it?”
Heat instantly surged through Sanji’s skin, causing him to stand so abruptly that his chair toppled over behind him.
Reiju was quick to reach Sanji’s side, her hand gripping his shoulder firmly in an attempt to stop him.
"Just ignore him," Reiju urged quietly. "He's just trying to pick a fight. Don't let him provoke you."
Sanji met his sister's gaze, seeing the concern reflected in her eyes.
With effort, Sanji swallowed back the torrent of curses that threatened to spill from his lips in response to his brother's callous words. Taking a deep breath, Sanji turned to leave.
“What a profound love you had for our mother,” Yonji’s mocking voice echoed after Sanji as he rushed out of the room. “To leave her behind while you saved only yourself.”
Yonji’s words landed through Sanji like an arrow to his heart, his steps faltered for a moment before he quickened his pace, determined to put as much distance between himself and his siblings as possible.
Finally alone, Sanji leaned against the cold wall of the corridor, his body shaking. Tears welled in his eyes, hot and stinging, as he struggled to contain the flood of feelings that threatened to consume him. With a deep, shuddering breath, he let himself surrender to the release of tears, allowing them to fall freely.
————————————-
“Other way, dumbass!”
Zoro felt a surge of frustration as Perona grabbed his shoulders, forcibly turning him in the opposite direction. He shook off her grip, irritated by her overbearing attitude.
"I know where the throne room is! You don’t have to lead me around!" Zoro snapped.
Perona, unfazed by his irritation, flipped her long, curly pink hair over her shoulder with a smirk.
"Of course I do! I swear, even though we’ve lived here most of our lives, you still get lost in your own home," Perona's playful jab hit its mark.
Zoro angrily swatted at his sister, only to miss as she effortlessly glided out of his reach. Her powers allowing her to float gracefully in the air, her long black dress trailing behind her like a dark cloud.
“Last week for dinner, Luffy had to lead you to the dining hall.”
“Luffy didn’t lead me. He was following me so Mihawk would invite him to join us.” Zoro retorted, his glare as sharp as his three swords that always hung at his hip.
Perona chuckled, thoroughly enjoying her brother's growing annoyance.
“Oh? What about yesterday when Nami and Vivi had to lead you? Were they fishing for a dinner invite too?” Her teasing tone danced through the air like a mocking melody. “Because they were on their way toward town when they caught you wandering around lost on the castle grounds. I’m pretty sure you messed up their date night.”
Zoro’s jaw clenched tighter, his stubborn scowl deepening at Perona’s continued teasing. Despite being familiar with the castle's layout, Zoro's tendency to get lost was a well-known fact among its inhabitants, and Perona took every opportunity to playfully rib him about it.
“I wasn’t lost. I was
exploring.” Zoro insisted gruffly. “Now stop your yapping and keep moving! Mihawk wanted to talk to us about something important.”
Perona’s laughter continued to echo through the corridor like the tinkling of wind chimes, her amusement evident in the playful glint of her eyes as she continued to glide ahead. The warm glow of the sun shone brightly through the windows, illuminating the rich gothic tapestries and plush furnishings that adorned the halls.
Though he's lived here for as long as he can remember, Zoro still finds himself marveling at the castle's grandeur with each passing day. It's a testament to the power and prestige of the man who rules over it, and Zoro can't help but feel a swell of pride at being a part of Mihawk's household.
Finally, they reach the throne room, and Zoro's heart swells with a sense of homecoming when he beholds the familiar sight before him: Mihawk's figure sitting upon his throne with a wine glass in hand. As Zoro enters, he knows that, despite his penchant for getting lost, he's found his place within the castle's hallowed halls.
“You both made it on time.” King Mihawk set his glass down and rose from his seat to greet his children. “How have your trainings gone today?”
“I’m getting a lot better at crushing souls,” Perona boasted, proudly puffing up her chest, “At this rate, I’ll be able to bring whole armies to their knees.”
King Mihawk chuckled softly at his daughter’s eagerness.
“That’s excellent to hear,” Mihawk replied warmly. “Our people are sure to benefit from your hard work and protection. Speaking of protection
” Mihawk's gaze shifted to Zoro, his eyes alight with pride and approval. "I heard how you led your band of knights to the southern border of Kuraigana. You stopped a herd of Dracon from attacking our citizens."
Zoro's expression turned serious.
"I cannot take credit for that," Zoro admitted. "Luffy was the one who took charge. Under his direction, we were able to stop the Dracon attacks."
King Mihawk regarded his son with a hint of amusement.
“Modesty suits you,” Mihawk remarked, his tone carrying a note of approval. “But remember, accepting praise when deserved is just as important. You and Luffy make a formidable team, but your bravery and dedication to our people haven’t gone unnoticed.”
Although Zoro tried his best to remain stoic, he could still feel the faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"I'm sure you didn't ask us to come here just so you could butter us up with compliments." Perona remarked, her arms crossed expectantly. "So what's so important that it couldn't wait to be discussed over dinner?”
Mihawk's expression grew solemn.
"As you both know, the constant attacks from the Dracons have interfered with the lives of our people for the last decade," Mihawk began, his tone grave. "Their numbers continue to grow, and despite our efforts to fend them off, our crops have suffered. I fear it won't be long before food becomes scarce."
Zoro and Perona exchanged a concerned glance, their worries mirrored in each other's eyes.
"The King of Germa has offered us aid through the formation of an alliance. They are known for their powerful armies and abundance of wealth, and they have reached out to extend their assistance to us in this time of need."
Zoro's brow furrowed in confusion as he processed his father's words.
"The Dracon attacks have been occurring for well over a decade, so why do they feel the need to form an alliance with us now?" Perona's skepticism mirrored Zoro's own thoughts.
"The King has expressed interest in our military might," Mihawk explained, his voice tinged with a hint of suspicion. "I have no doubt that he sees the alliance as a way to enhance his own military strength."
Zoro's frown deepened at his father's reply, his mind racing with questions and doubts about this alliance with the Germa Kingdom. But Mihawk pressed on, undeterred.
"Whatever their motives may be, I think we owe it to our people to see what comes from these negotiations," Mihawk continued firmly. "This war against the Dracons has not affected them as it has other neighboring kingdoms. They have the means to ensure our people do not go hungry."
“When are these negotiations meant to take place?” Zoro inquired.
“King Vinsmoke has invited our family to stay in his castle while we negotiate the terms of our alliance. We will leave tomorrow,” Mihawk’s calm reply was met with an exaggerated gasp from Perona.
“Tomorrow?! That’s such short notice! We barely have enough time to pack for the trip!” Perona exclaimed, her voice rising in frustration. “I’m not sure I have enough time to coordinate outfits. How long will we be staying there for?”
“All your dresses look the same. It shouldn’t take you long to throw a few in a trunk.” Zoro rolled his eyes.
Perona shot him a wide eyed glare. Lips pursed in anger.
“We are going to be around other royals. They give us enough grief for not being of royal descent. You want them to make fun of us for being poorly dressed too?!” Perona punctuated her point by elbowing Zoro in the ribs. In return, Zoro elbowed her back, casting a glare of his own.
“If they are just like all the other snobbish royals out there, then why should we care what they think of us?!” Zoro argued.
“Will you both please stop your bickering?” Their father's voice cut through their argument, and Zoro and Perona turned to see him pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration.
“This is precisely why I wanted to meet with the two of you. We will be staying with the Vinsmoke family for a week, perhaps longer if negotiations drag on, and I expect you both to be on your best behavior.”
Zoro guiltily bit his tongue to stop himself from arguing further with Perona. He eyed his sister carefully and noticed that she, too, was attempting to stay civil.
“Now, go make any arrangements you need to before our departure.” Mihawk ushered the two out of the throne room. He gave them one last warning look, sternly expressing his desire for them to get along, then shut the doors behind them.
“You were the one who started that argument,” Perona hissed quietly to avoid being heard by Mihawk. She turned her nose in the air and set off down the hall, Zoro following closely behind.
“You should be more concerned about our people going hungry rather than how you look to other royals.” Zoro scolded.
Perona abruptly turned to face Zoro, her floating form bringing her angry face inches from his own.
“I care because we are representing our Kingdom, and I want to be taken seriously!” Perona snapped. “You should be a bit more concerned about your appearance. If we look slovenly and uncaring, then they will see that as a reflection of our leadership skills. Doesn’t that worry you at all?”
Zoro's brows furrowed as he contemplated Perona's words. He knew she had a point, but his concerns ran deeper than mere appearances.
“Appearance is the least of my worries. Most royals don’t see me as being a worthy heir to Mihawk’s throne and never will.” Zoro averted his gaze from Perona. In his mind he sometimes wondered if other royals were right
he still had a long way to go before he could call himself Mihawk’s equal.
Perona's expression softened as she regarded her brother. Despite their frequent disagreements, she understood the weight of the expectations Zoro placed on himself. She reached out and gently placed a hand on his arm.
“Zoro, you may not see it, but Father believes in you. He sees your potential, even if you don't,” Perona reassured him, her voice softening. “You're stronger than you realize, and one day, you'll prove all those doubters wrong.”
Zoro couldn’t bring himself to meet Perona’s gaze. Despite her reassurances, he still felt weighed down by his own insecurities. He knew that earning the respect of his people was just the beginning; he needed to prove himself worthy of his father's faith and the responsibility that came with it.
Perona sensed her brother's sadness and decided to lighten the mood. With a small smile, she changed the subject, diverting Zoro's attention away from his doubts.
“You know that jacket I made for you on your last birthday? The deep midnight blue one with the gold trimmings? You should wear that when we meet the Vinsmokes. It makes you look exceptionally regal.” Perona suggested, hoping to boost Zoro's confidence.
Zoro tried to suppress his amusement but failed miserably.
“Thanks.” he muttered gratefully. Despite their differences, he couldn't help but appreciate having Perona as his sister.

TWO YEARS LATER
The long journey to the Kuraigana Kingdom was a familiar one, but the sense of anticipation in Sanji’s chest was as strong as ever. He sat in the carriage, his fingers absentmindedly tracing the edges of a small box in his hands. Although he had grown accustomed to the routine of traveling between Germa and Kuraigana, the time spent apart from Zoro always left him with a deep aching homesickness, but now the Kuraigana mountains were already emerging in the distance, their dark twisted peaks promising that it wouldn’t be much longer before he was back where he truly belonged: beside Zoro.
It was hard to believe how much had changed since Judge’s death. Reiju, as the firstborn, had taken her rightful place on the throne without contest. Their brothers had been too intimidated by Mihawk and the King’s open support of Reiju to oppose her ascension. Under Reiju’s rule, Germa had transformed almost overnight. Where Judge had been obsessed with militarization, Reiju focused on restoration. She and Mihawk worked tirelessly to allocate Germa’s wealth to rebuilding homes in the neighboring kingdoms ravaged by Dracon attacks.
One of Reiju’s first decisions as queen was to bring Zeff back into the castle, not as the head chef but as a Royal Courtier. His role was to advise her on the needs of the people, drawing on his experience of providing aid to the hungry Germa villagers that were wrongfully neglected by Judge. Reiju even expanded the servants' quarters to ensure that everyone who worked under the royal family could live comfortably. It didn’t take long for her to become a beloved queen, admired for her genuine compassion and unwavering commitment to her people.
Sanji had found his own place in this new world as well. At Mihawk’s suggestion, Reiju had appointed him as the Royal Liaison between Germa and Kuraigana. It was a role that fit him perfectly. He spent his days assessing Kuraigana’s needs, relaying them back to Reiju, and then returning to Kuraigana with supplies and aid. The work was fulfilling, allowing him to make a difference in the lives of others, and his role ensured that he got to work alongside Zeff whenever he was working in Germa
but it was the moments he could steal away with Zoro in Kuraigana that he cherished the most.
Zoro had not only come to terms with his new form but had fully embraced it, finding strength in the changes by inventing a four-sword style that utilized his tail as a formidable weapon. Sanji watched with pride as Zoro mastered his new abilities with the same determination he applied to everything else. Every time Zoro sparred, Sanji felt captivated by his movements, his silver wings and tail adding an almost mythical quality to his already impressive skill set.
When Sanji first joined the Mihawks on their journey back home, he had been anxious about how others might react to Zoro’s transformation. He knew that people could be cruel when faced with the unfamiliar, but those fears were swiftly put to rest when he met Zoro’s friends.
The first to greet them upon their arrival was Luffy, the ‘bottomless pit’ Zoro had mentioned. Upon seeing Zoro, Luffy’s eyes lit up with excitement as he immediately declared, "Zoro, you look so cool now!"
Any tension Sanji had felt melted away in that instant, but not everyone was as immediately enthusiastic as Luffy.
A red-head named Nami demanded answers the moment she laid eyes on Zoro.
“You were only gone for a week!” Sanji vividly remembered Nami’s exasperated shout as she pointed an accusing finger at Zoro. “A week! Now you come back w-with wings and a boyfriend?!”
While Nami had ranted, Usopp had taken hold of Zoro’s left wing, carefully opening and closing it as if testing the mechanics of a new gadget. Meanwhile, Luffy tugged at Zoro’s tail, marveling at the shimmering silver scales with wide-eyed wonder. Zoro, of course, was no help at all.  He’d simply shrugged, as if suddenly sprouting wings and gaining a partner were everyday occurrences. That left Sanji with the task of explaining everything.
Despite the chaos of that first meeting, Sanji was deeply grateful how Zoro’s friends had welcomed him without hesitation. There had been no awkwardness on their end, no suspicion; just an immediate and wholehearted acceptance. They accepted him into their circle as if he had always been a part of it, and when they tasted his cooking, their affection only grew. They practically begged him to take over their meals whenever he visited Kuraigana, and Sanji had gladly obliged. Cooking for friends felt natural, like he was contributing to a family he hadn’t realized he was missing. They all gave him the same sense of belonging that Zoro had given him, tied together by bonds of trust.
Kuraigana was now in a much better place than it was two years ago. Without constant attacks, the Kingdom was thriving. Its once barren lands now flourished thanks to the constant aid from Germa. The threat of famine had become a distant memory, and the people were beginning to rebuild their lives with renewed hope. Sanji knew his work there was done. With the Kingdom on its feet, there would be no need for him to travel back and forth as he had been

As the Kuraigana castle grew larger with each passing mile, Sanji’s thoughts drifted to the moment he’d been planning for months. He tore his gaze away from the window and looked down at the small box in his hands. He’d been carrying it with him for what felt like an eternity, always finding an excuse to delay, telling himself it wasn’t the right time, or that they were too busy with rebuilding the Kingdoms. Now, with the end of their long journey in sight, Sanji knew it was finally time.
Taking a deep breath, Sanji opened the box, his heart fluttering as he gazed at the silver band nestled inside. It was simple yet elegant, its polished surface catching the light in a way that reminded him of the glint in Zoro’s eyes when he was focused on a goal. The thought brought a small smile to his lips. With a wavering breath, Sanji snapped the box shut and tucked it back into his pocket, trying to steady the nerves buzzing in his chest.
The carriage rolled to a stop in front of the towering castle, its dark silhouette against the sky a familiar and comforting sight. Sanji paused for a moment, taking in the grandeur of the place that felt like home, then stepped out onto the cobblestone path, feeling the cool air hit his face. He barely had time to register his surroundings when a loud, exuberant shout rang out.
“SANJI IS BAAAACK!”
Sanji was suddenly pulled into a bone-crushing hug. All he could see was a mess of unruly hair, but there was no mistaking the boundless energy of the person holding him.
“We really missed you! Especially Zoro!” Luffy’s voice boomed in Sanji’s ear as he struggled to free himself from Luffy’s enthusiastic grip. Despite his efforts, Luffy’s grip was as strong as ever, firmly holding him in place. “The food doesn’t taste the same when you’re gone! When are you going to cook again?! Can it be meat?!! LOTS of meat-”
Before Luffy could continue, a perfectly manicured hand appeared out of nowhere and smacked him upside the head. The impact made a satisfying thwack.
“Luffy, let him breathe!” Nami’s familiar voice scolded just beyond what Sanji could see.
Sanji felt the air rush back into his lungs as Luffy finally let him go. The knight began rubbing the back of his head where Nami had struck him, his expression was that of a chastised child, eyes darting sideways as if to avoid further reprimand. Now free from the vice-like grip, Sanji turned to see Nami standing there with her hands on her hips. Beside her, Vivi looked concerned, casting a worried glance at Luffy as if unsure whether she should intervene or laugh.
The entire interaction filled Sanji with warmth. It was a welcomed kind of chaos that reminded him just how much he missed being here.
“Welcome back, Sanji.” Vivi said warmly, finally shifting her attention from Luffy to him, offering him a genuine smile, her eyes filled with a gentle kindness. “It’s nice to have you back.”
“Nice to be back.” Sanji replied, flashing Vivi a wide smile. As he scanned the courtyard, his eyes darted between familiar faces, but his heart sank a little when he didn’t see the one he was most eager to find. “Where’s Zoro?”
Nami raised an eyebrow, surprised by the question. She glanced over her shoulder, her hands falling from her hips and she let out a frustrated sigh.
“Ugh! He and Usopp were right behind us.” Nami explained, still scanning the area for any sign of them. After a moment, she gave up and turned back to Sanji, her red hair flipping at the gesture. “Luffy spotted your carriage first and bolted. We all had to run to catch up with him.”
“I think we lost them when we turned a corner.” Vivi added thoughtfully, her expression softening into an apologetic smile.
Sanji chuckled softly, shaking his head. He wasn’t surprised that Zoro had gotten lost, but it was a bit odd that Usopp had also vanished.
As if on cue, Usopp appeared from a completely different direction than the rest of the group had come from. He looked utterly exasperated, and his hand was clamped onto a fistful of Zoro’s shirt, practically dragging him along as if to ensure he didn’t wander off.
Zoro, looking equally annoyed at being handled like a stray dog, suddenly perked up when his eyes met Sanji’s. His irritation vanished, replaced by a light in his eyes. Zoro’s pace quickened, his steps growing more urgent, and he almost bulldozed past Usopp, who had to release his hold or risk being dragged along.
“Got lost?” Sanji asked with a teasing smirk when Zoro got close.
Sanji watched with amusement as Zoro's smile disappeared. The green haired prince halted his stride right before Sanji, a scowl forming on his face.
“No, I didn’t get lost.” Zoro grumbled defensively, shooting Sanji a glare.
“Liar!” Usopp huffed, coming up beside Zoro and slightly out of breath. “If I hadn’t turned back for you, you’d be on the opposite side of the castle by now!”
Sanji laughed, watching Zoro’s glare shift from him to Usopp. Zoro’s nostrils flared and his jaw tightened as if preparing to fire back some gruff retort. Before Zoro could say anything, Sanji noticed movement from behind him. Luffy was peeking into the carriage with a curious glint in his eyes. When Luffy’s hand reached for one of the neatly wrapped packages inside, Sanji reacted fast, pivoting on his heel and extending his leg to block the door, barring Luffy from his prize.
“I haven’t even been here five minutes, and you’re already trying to steal food?” Sanji scolded with a glare.
Luffy’s face lit up, unfazed.
“You brought food back for us?!” Luffy asked, excitement bubbling in his voice.
Sanji’s eyes narrowed, trying to maintain an intimidating look, but a hint of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, betraying his amusement.
“Yes, I brought food.” Sanji replied, lowering his leg to casually lean against the carriage. “Bringing supplies is still part of my duties”
Luffy's excitement was quickly replaced by a puzzled frown.
“But Zoro said you don’t have to do that anymore.” Luffy said, scratching his head. “That means you get to stay here now, right?”
Sanji felt his body tense up. The rest of the group fell into an awkward silence. Sanji kept his eyes on Luffy, unwilling to risk a glance at Zoro. The small box in his pocket seemed to grow heavier. He realized, with a pang of uncertainty, that he and Zoro had never actually talked about what would happen once his duties as a liaison were no longer needed. Did Zoro want him to stay in Kuraigana? Was this something they needed to sort out before he even thought of proposing?
Sensing the unease, Vivi cleared her throat softly, stepping in to break the silence.
“So, what did you have there?” Vivi asked, eyeing the contents of the carriage curiously. “It seems like a lot less than what you usually bring.”
Grateful for the shift in conversation, Sanji seized the opportunity to reach back into the carriage and retrieved the neatly wrapped box Luffy had been eyeing. With a practiced flourish, he removed the lid, revealing an assortment of beautifully decorated pastries, each one crafted with care.
“I made these sweets especially for you and Nami.” Sanji replied, extending the box toward Vivi. He couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride when he saw her eyes light up with delight.
Her eyes lit up with delight, a soft gasp escaping her lips as she took in the sight of the intricately designed pastries. Sanji felt a swell of pride at her reaction. Even in the midst of all his worries, bringing joy through his cooking never failed to lift his spirits.
“Oh, Sanji, these look wonderful!” Vivi exclaimed, her eyes sparkling as she admired the intricate details on each pastry.
“They sure do!” Luffy chimed in, his face lighting up with eager delight. Without wasting a second, he reached into the box, fingers aiming directly for a heart-shaped macaron.
Sanji reflexes were quick. In a flash, his foot pressed against Luffy’s chest, gently but firmly pushing him away before he could snatch the treat.
“These are only for the ladies.” Sanji's eyes narrowed at Luffy, who pouted as he watched Nami carefully take the box out of Sanji’s hand.
Luffy backed off, letting Sanji's leg drop, only to bounce back with renewed enthusiasm.
“So what did you bring me?!” Luffy asked, his grin returning and eyes growing wide with anticipation.
Sanji rolled his eyes, a small amused smile tugging at his lips. He turned back to the carriage and pulled out two larger boxes, both heavier than the one meant for Nami and Vivi. With a dramatic sigh, he dropped them into Luffy’s eager hands.
“The desserts are for all the knights to share.” Sanji said sternly as he stared down at Luffy. “The box of jerky is for you.”
“YES!” Luffy’s cheer echoed through the courtyard, his excitement overflowing. He didn’t wait another second before dashing off, leaving a trail of dust behind him.
“Hey!!! Sanji said to share!” Usopp shouted after him, breaking into a sprint to chase down the ravenous knight.
A deep laugh came from beside Sanji, pulling his attention away from Luffy and Usopp. Zoro had stepped closer, the familiar scent of steel washing over Sanji. Amusement danced in Zoro’s eyes and a lazy grin spread across his face. Without missing a beat, Zoro slipped an arm around Sanji’s shoulders, the casual gesture sending a warm fluttering sensation through Sanji's chest.
“So, what did you bring me?” Zoro’s voice came out in a low rumble, almost like a purr. It was the same question Luffy had asked moments ago, but when it came from Zoro, it felt entirely different. It was intimate, teasing, with an undercurrent that made Sanji’s skin tingle. However, the question caused Sanji’s thoughts to immediately shift to the ring hidden in his pocket.
Sanji’s heartbeat quickened. He felt the nerves creeping in, but he refused to let them show. Not now.
“Isn’t my presence gift enough?” Sanji snapped, his tone sharp to mask the anxiety bubbling beneath the surface. “It’s a lot of work going back and forth, and, if I recall correctly, a certain someone,”Sanji emphasized the word with a firm jab of his finger against Zoro’s chest, feeling the solid muscle beneath, “said that if they had wings, they’d fly to Germa every day just to see me.”
Zoro’s grin only widened, his eyes narrowing with that familiar, dangerous glint that always seemed to stir something deep inside Sanji.
“We tried that already,” Zoro shot back teasingly, “but you gave terrible directions and Perona had to find me.”
“Tch, your awful sense of direction is what set you off course, mosshead.” Sanji retorted with a smirk, stepping in even closer. Their bodies were practically pressed together now, the air between them filled with a tension that had nothing to do with animosity.
Zoro’s eyes flashed with a mock warning, but he continued to lean in further, their faces just an inch apart.
“My sense of direction is perfectly fine, curls.” Zoro defended, his tone still light but challenging. “But you can’t deny that a daily flight to Germa would be hell on my back.”
“So, what you’re saying is, your wings aren’t strong enough for a little bit of exercise?” Sanji murmured, his voice dropping to a low suggestive whisper. His nose brushed against Zoro’s, and his half-lidded eyes drifted to Zoro’s lips, the temptation to close it was almost overwhelming. “Typical
”
Zoro’s eyes darkened, his breath catching when he realized where Sanji’s gaze was lingering. The smoldering intensity behind silver eyes made Sanji’s heart race. Zoro opened his mouth, likely to retort with something equally cutting or heated, but before he could get a word out, an exasperated groan cut through the air.
“Ugh, they’re already starting.” Nami’s voice broke into, yanking Sanji back to the present moment. He had been so caught up with Zoro that he’d forgotten they weren’t alone.
Sanji’s eyes darted away from Zoro’s face to sheepishly glance over his shoulder. He found Nami standing there with her nose scrunched in exaggerated distaste, but a smirk tugged at her lips. Beside her, Vivi covered her mouth with her hand, a soft melodic chuckle escaping her as she watched their sappy display. Nami, holding the box of sweets in one hand, slipped her other arm around Vivi’s waist, pulling her closer.
“Come on, Vivi.” Nami continued, pulling Vivi closer with an exaggerated huff. “Let’s leave these knuckleheads to their weird sexually charged bickering.”
Sanji felt a faint flush crawl up his neck. It was one thing to get lost in the moment with Zoro, but another entirely to realize they had an audience. He shot a sideways glance at Zoro, who seemed utterly unbothered by their interruption, his intense gaze still locked onto Sanji with a heat that made his stomach flip. As Nami and Vivi’s footsteps faded away, the world seemed to shrink down to just the two of them once more.
The moment they were alone, Zoro wasted no time. He grabbed Sanji by the waist, pulling him firmly against his chest. There was a hunger in his eyes, a need that matched Sanji’s own. Their lips met in a tender yet demanding kiss, a collision of pent-up desire. The homesickness that had gnawed at Sanji since he last left Kuraigana melted away in an instant. Zoro’s mouth moved against his with a greediness, eager to make up for all the time they’d been apart. Sanji sighed into the kiss, his body melting into the warmth of it, into the familiarity of Zoro’s touch and the way he seemed to know exactly how to draw him in.
But then he felt it
Zoro’s rough hands started to wander, sliding down his back, exploring, searching.
Sanji’s eyes snapped open when he realized the dangerous territory Zoro was venturing into. The swordsman’s hands were creeping lower, close to the pocket where the ring box was tucked away. If he kept going he'd find it, and that wasn’t how Sanji wanted this moment to unfold.
With an almost panicked motion, Sanji pulled away, breaking the kiss. Zoro’s expression shifted immediately from contentment to confusion. His brows drew together, confusion flickering across his face, mingled with a hint of hurt. Sliver wings drooped, the soft leathery membranes curling inward in disappointment.
“What’s wrong?” Zoro asked with concern.
Sanji’s mind scrambled, searching desperately for an excuse that wouldn’t arouse more suspicion. His heart was still pounding, both from the intensity of the kiss and the panic of almost having his secret exposed.
“I can’t have you making me look messy before seeing Mihawk and Perona.” Sanji lied, his voice not as steady as he’d hoped. The words felt clumsy and unconvincing even to his own ears.
Zoro’s frown deepened and his eyes narrowed. His tail flicked behind him, a telltale sign that he wasn't buying Sanji’s excuse.
“You won’t see either of them until dinner time,” Zoro pointed out, his voice carrying a note of suspicion. He took a step closer, reaching out to pull Sanji back in, as if testing his boundaries. “Mihawk’s out in the village with Shanks, and Perona asked not to be disturbed until she’s done with the dress she’s making for Reiju.”
Sanji’s nerves were fraying. He felt the heat of Zoro’s touch again, and when he sensed those hands sliding down toward his pocket, he knew he had to act fast. With a frustrated huff, he pulled away once more, this time adding a sharp edge to his voice.
“Well, I just got here.” Sanji scolded as he tried to keep Zoro’s hands at bay. “At least let me settle in before you start trying to tear my clothes off.” His words came out harsher than he intended, but they served their purpose. Zoro’s hands halted.
Although Zoro still looked skeptical, his lips curled into a smirk at Sanji’s choice of words, his wings perking up with renewed interest.
“Fine.” Zoro replied, his voice dropping to a low, suggestive growl that sent a familiar shiver down Sanji’s spine. “I’d prefer a more private location for that anyway.”
A thrill shot through Sanji despite himself, and he had to fight to keep his composure. At least he’d managed to steer them away from the ring for now. Relieved but still on edge, he decided to seize the opportunity to change the subject entirely.
“Come on. Let’s take a walk.” Sanji suggested, grasping onto Zoro’s wrist and gently tugging him toward the castle. “I could use a stretch after that long ride.”
Zoro raised an eyebrow but didn’t resist. However, instead of following Sanji to the castle, he took the lead, moving Sanji away from the carriage and toward the winding path that led around the castle grounds.
Sanji's footsteps fell in sync beside Zoro, his heart still pounding from both the kiss and from almost having his secret discovered. The ring in his pocket felt like a small burning weight against his thigh. Although he greatly enjoyed walking around the castle grounds, he needed to buy himself some time to get to his room where he could hide the ring away and plan things properly.
Sanji’s mind had been buzzing nonstop with ideas for the perfect moment. A home-cooked meal with all of Zoro’s favorite dishes, the ones he could never quite resist, paired with a bottle of his preferred sake sounded like a good idea, but it still wasn’t perfect. Sanji wanted to make it clear how much this decision meant to him, how deeply he felt about this next step in their lives. For now, he just needed to keep his nerves steady. The next time he let Zoro hold him close, he wanted it to be with a ring in hand, not a secret burning a hole through his pocket.
The silence between them stretched, filled only by the crunch of gravel under their feet and the distant rustle of trees swaying in the breeze. Sanji was still lost in his thoughts when Zoro’s voice suddenly broke through, catching him off guard.
“How is everyone doing?”
The question jolted him out of his headspace, a small shock running up his spine. Sanji glanced at Zoro, catching the inquisitive gleam in his eye, but quickly shifted his gaze back ahead to hide his momentary surprise.
“Everyone’s doing great.” Sanji replied. He could feel Zoro’s eyes lingering on him, probably sensing the tension in his posture, but he ignored it and continued, trying to sound casual. “Niji and Yonji are finally staying in line. I think it was really smart of Reiju to put them under Zeff’s watch.”
Zoro let out a chuckle. “And how’s the old man holding up? It must be a handful to look after them.”
Sanji couldn’t help but smile, the memory of Zeff trying to wrangle the two brothers and directing them to pass out food was still fresh in his mind.
“He’s more stubborn than they are. Besides, I think he’s secretly enjoying it. Gives him someone to argue with other than me.” Sanji replied with a light laugh. ”To be honest, Niji and Yonji need someone like him to keep them on their toes. They’ve been too used to doing things Judge’s way for too long.”
Zoro nodded, a knowing smile tugging at his lips.
“Bet Zeff’s giving them hell.”
“You have no idea.” Sanji’s smirk widened. “But it’s good for them. Zeff is someone who won’t take their shit. Plus, they have even been nicer to Pudding, so I think that says a lot about how much they have improved.”
At the mention of Pudding, Sanji noticed the smile on Zoro’s face fade into a scowl. His wings stiffened and his tail twitched behind him as they moved off the paved path and under the shade of the trees.
"Is she still following you around the castle?" Zoro’s voice was strained, the question forced through gritted teeth.
Sanji hesitated, his hands instinctively stuffing into his pockets. He forgot that mentioning Pudding made Zoro upset. Ever since Pudding's involvement in Linlin and Judge’s schemes had come to light, there had been an overwhelming call for her imprisonment. Many citizens wanted to see her pay for her part in the chaos that had nearly destroyed them all. But Sanji had taken pity on her. He knew better than most what it was like to be caught in an abusive household, to be manipulated and coerced into thinking you had no other choice but to follow orders.
Reiju had been hesitant to let Pudding off without severe consequences, but Sanji had convinced her otherwise. He’d argued that Pudding genuinely wanted to make amends. She sought redemption to clear the Charlotte name for her siblings, just as Reiju and Sanji sought to clear their own.
When it was discovered that there were still Dracons alive, Reiju allowed Pudding a way out of her punishment by restoring their memories. Pudding was hesitant at first, but agreed to let her abilities be used towards something good.
To repay Sanji for his kindness, Pudding also offered her services in other ways to help Germa heal and to undo some of the damage her actions had caused. After Linlin’s death, she’d managed to convince many of her siblings to donate a large portion of their inherited goods to help rebuild what had been destroyed and worked alongside Sanji and Zeff to ensure the goods were being distributed fairly.
Although Sanji was happy for this change, he would admit that his kindness had, perhaps, been a bit too effective. Pudding had grown overly attached to him, clinging to him in ways that made her intentions obvious, and it tested Zoro’s patience.
Sanji glanced sideways at Zoro, noticing the way his gaze was burning into him, waiting for an answer.
“Yeah, she still... hangs around sometimes.” Sanji admitted carefully. “But I keep my distance as much as my duties allow. You can trust me on that.”
Zoro’s gaze softened slightly, but he didn’t quite lose the hardened edge. He turned his head away, his glare settling into something more like a pout. The dappled shadows of the leaves overhead danced across his face.
“I trust you,” Zoro muttered low in frustration. “But I don’t trust her.”
Zoro’s wings gave a small, irritated flick, causing the leaves above them to rustle with the motion. Sanji could see how much it bothered him, how tightly he was gripping onto his jealousy, trying to keep it from boiling over.
Sanji let out a small sigh, reaching out to brush his fingers against Zoro's hand in an attempt to calm him. He felt Zoro’s hand tense for a moment before his fingers instinctively curled around Sanji’s, holding on like an anchor. The tension that had knotted Zoro’s posture seemed to loosen ever so slightly, the anger in his eyes dimming.
“With my services no longer being needed, I won’t have to interact with her anymore.” Sanji reassured Zoro. His words seemed to work, for now, the tightness in Zoro’s shoulders slowly began to ease. However, as Zoro’s nerves seemed to wane, a new wave of uncertainty washed over Sanji.
The end of his work between Germa and Kuraigana meant fewer encounters with Pudding, which was a good thing, but it also brought another potential consequence to the forefront of his mind: less time with Zoro.
If Zoro wasn’t ready for Sanji to live in Kuraigana, then there was no way Sanji was prepared to propose. If Sanji didn’t propose then he didn’t want to think of what that could mean
Would they drift apart? Would the long distance between them be too much for their relationship to handle?
A silence settled between them again, but this time it was heavy, weighed down by Sanji’s unspoken thoughts and unasked questions. He didn’t realize how much he’d been holding back until he felt Zoro’s eyes on him again.
“Are you sure nothing is wrong?” Zoro’s voice broke through the quiet, laced with genuine concern.
Sanji hesitated, feeling his heart pick up its pace. He hadn’t expected Zoro to notice the shift in his mood so quickly.
“I’m positive.” Sanji replied with a small smile, trying to keep his tone light. “Why do you ask?”
“You seem a bit
” Zoro trailed off as his eyes studied Sanji, his brows knitting together as he searched for the right words. “...distant.”
Sanji raised an eyebrow, feigning ignorance. With a sigh, Zoro pressed on.
“You seem hesitant to let me get close. You keep pulling away, and you looked uncomfortable when Luffy asked if you’d be staying here in Kuraigana.” Zoro’s voice was edged with a vulnerability that surprised Sanji. His tail twisted in on itself, a gesture Sanji knew that meant Zoro was anxious. Sanji stayed silent, grappling with how to respond. He hadn’t realized how his actions were affecting Zoro, making him feel insecure about where they stood. When Sanji didn’t answer right away, Zoro continued, unable to hold back any longer. “I know we haven’t talked about this yet, but
where do you see yourself now that your work is done?”
Living in Kuraigana married to you, was Sanji's first thought, almost too clear in his mind, but he wasn’t ready to voice that yet. Not when the timing didn’t feel quite right, and not when he still needed to hear where Zoro stood.
“Where would you like to see me?” Sanji countered, turning the question back on Zoro to gauge his thoughts, but it only seemed to frustrate the other.
“I asked my question first.” Zoro said firmly. His wings tightened against his back as if he was bracing himself for a blow, afraid of what Sanji might say.
Sanji felt his nerves spike, a knot tightening in his stomach. He didn’t know what Zoro wanted, and that uncertainty made it hard to formulate a response. His breathing began to quicken, and just before his mind could spiral, a realization hit him: he was falling back into his old habits instilled in him by Judge. He was too focused on trying to read Zoro’s desires like he used to do with Judge, where every word had to be carefully chosen to appease him, to avoid conflict or punishment. The habit of molding himself to fit someone else’s expectations was a hard one to break, but Zoro wasn’t Judge, and Sanji didn’t need to tiptoe around him. It was sometimes easy to forget that he could speak freely now and he could be honest with what he wanted.
Taking a breath, Sanji decided to stop overthinking it.
“I’d like to stay here in Kuraigana.” Sanji answered truthfully, meeting Zoro’s gaze head-on. He saw Zoro’s wings begin to unfold. Emboldened by that small sign of relief, Sanji continued, “I’d like to stay here with you. Is that alright?”
A slow smile spread across Zoro’s face. Relief washed over Sanji at the sight of it. Zoro reached out, taking hold of Sanji’s left hand and lifted it to his lips.
“More than alright.” Zoro replied, his voice a deep rumble that sent a pleasant warmth coursing through Sanji. Zoro paused to press a kiss to Sanji’s knuckles, his lips lingering there with a tenderness that melted Sanji’s heart. Holding Sanji’s gaze steady with a quiet intensity. “I was hoping for the same thing.”
Sanji’s breath caught in his throat as if he was choking from the sheer force of his emotions. The anxiety that had been gnawing at him faded into the background. They both wanted the same things. He wasn’t alone in this. For a fleeting moment, Sanji considered proposing right then and there, abandoning his plan for the “perfect” moment he’d envisioned. But no. He wanted to do it right.
As they continued to walk, Zoro’s eyes stayed fixed on him, his tail lazily sweeping away the long branches that stretched across their path. The sunlight began to filter more clearly through the trees, spilling onto the ground in golden patches that flickered and danced with the swaying leaves above. Gradually, the dense foliage began to part, revealing a beautiful sight.
A secluded clearing opened up like a secret world within the forest, bathed in warm sunlight that filtered down through the canopy of leaves above. A small, crystalline pond lay at the center, its surface so still that it perfectly reflected the golden light and the soft blue sky peeking through the treetops. The water sparkled like liquid glass, and beneath its surface, small fish darted playfully around smooth stones. Wildflowers dotted the edges of the pond, their bright colors swaying gently in the soft breeze, while the lush grass rippled like waves. The air was filled with the soothing sounds of nature. The quiet rustle of leaves, the distant chirping of birds, the soft hum of insects was all so calm, so serene, that it felt like stepping into another world.
Sanji blinked in surprise.  He hadn’t realized where they were headed, his mind had been too occupied with his own swirling thoughts. Now standing here, he recognized the place immediately: Zoro’s secret meditation spot.
“Did you bring us here on purpose?” Sanji asked, glancing at Zoro curiously.
Zoro’s lips curled into a smirk. “I was surprised you didn’t question it earlier, but that’s what clued me in that you were deep in thought.” Zoro replied in a teasing tone.
Sanji could feel the heat rising to his face, his ears burning with a blush he couldn't hide. He wasn’t often caught off guard, but Zoro had a way of reading him, of seeing right through his defenses in a way that always left him feeling exposed, but in a good way. It made him feel seen, understood.
“Guess I was.” Sanji admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. “Still surprises me that this is the only place you can find easily when no one else has come across it.”
“I have my ways.” Zoro’s smirk softened into a gentler smile, his gaze drifting over the clearing.
This clearing wasn’t just a random spot in the woods. It was a place of solace. Zoro had found it in his early days at the Kuraigana castle, back when he was first adopted by Mihawk after losing his family. Back when he was still grappling with grief, confusion, and the overwhelming sense of loss. This hidden clearing had been a refuge for him. It was a place where he could sit in silence, reflect, and process the emotions that had no outlet. A place to meditate, to train, and sometimes just to cry without judgment. Over the years, it had become something sacred to him, a space where he could strip away the burdens of his past and center himself.
Zoro had shared this place with Sanji when he first visited Kuraigana. The moment he laid eyes on this place, Sanji knew that sharing this location was no small gesture. It was a silent offering of Zoro’s trust, love, and vulnerability. Zoro had never brought anyone else here. Not Mihawk, not Perona, not even Luffy. Only Sanji.
Sanji looked around, feeling a sense of peace wash over him. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the scent of wildflowers, and he could hear the soft rustling of leaves above them, like a natural lullaby. Stepping closer to the water’s edge, he peered down to observe the stream, his reflection rippling alongside the vibrant world beneath the surface.
The water was so clear it was almost unreal. Small fish darted to and fro, their colorful scales shimmering like jewels as they moved through the sunlight. They danced around each other in rhythmic patterns, flashing reds, blues, and golds in a silent underwater waltz. Sanji found himself mesmerized by their movements, watching how they glided effortlessly through the water. This pond always made him think of the All Blue, a dream that had always felt so far away yet suddenly seemed within reach. Was the All Blue this clear, its waters filled with such vibrant life? Were its fish just as brilliant, their scales catching the light like these?
The thought brought a smile to his lips.
As he lost himself in these musings, he felt the familiar warmth of Zoro approaching from behind. Strong scarred arms wrapped around his waist, pulling him into a comforting embrace. Sanji instinctively stilled, but when Zoro’s hands didn’t wander down further, all that tension melted away, and Sanji leaned back into the touch, his body fitting naturally against Zoro’s. The swordsman’s chest was warm against his back, and he could feel the steady rise and fall of Zoro’s breathing.
“Thank you for bringing me here.” Sanji murmured, his gaze still fixed on the pond where two fish were circling each other in a slow, graceful dance. “It’s nice to be somewhere quiet for a change.”
Zoro’s grip tightened affectionately.
“Anytime, cook.” Zoro replied. Sanji’s heart fluttered when he felt the soft, featherlight brush of Zoro’s lips against the back of his neck. It wasn’t even a full kiss, more like a whisper of affection, but it sent a pleasant shiver down his spine. He closed his eyes, letting himself fall deeper into the sensation.
But then, Zoro’s lips moved again, this time to speak.
“I have to admit,” Zoro whispered, his breath hot against Sanji’s skin, “there’s another reason I brought you here.”
There was a tremor in Zoro’s voice, almost imperceptible, but enough to pull Sanji out of his blissful haze.
“Hm?” Sanji furrowed his curled brows. He turned his head just enough to catch Zoro’s gaze, searching his eyes for answers. “Is something wrong?”
Zoro’s face remained calm, almost too calm, but his tail betrayed him, flicking with a telltale twitch that only Sanji would notice.
“No, nothing is wrong,” Zoro assured him, but there was a pause, a hesitation. “This felt like something that required a more... quiet discussion.”
Sanji waited, his heart beginning to pound a little harder as the silence stretched between them, filled only with the sounds of the breeze and the distant babble of the stream. Then Zoro finally spoke.
“Mihawk is stepping down.”
“Oh!” Sanji’s eyes widened in realization. The pieces started to fall in place, the implication hitting him like a wave. “So that means-”
“I’ll be crowned King by springtime.” Zoro answered before Sanji could finish his thought. “He believes the kingdom is in a good place and that I am ready to lead.”
The air seemed to leave Sanji’s lungs in one swift rush. His mind raced, scrambling to process the magnitude of what Zoro had just said. King. Zoro was going to be king. The word echoed in his mind, carrying with it a wave of emotions: pride, excitement, and an unexpected swell of bittersweet realization...
This changed everything.
If Zoro was going to be King, he’d need to focus on his new responsibilities, on guiding Kuraigana into its next chapter. As much as Sanji wanted to propose, to take that next step with him, he realized it might be wiser to wait. Zoro would need his full attention on the throne, and the thought of distracting him now felt selfish.
Sanji turned fully, a smile spreading across his face as he wrapped his arms around Zoro, holding him tight.
“Congratulations.” Sanji replied happily. Zoro’s arms wrapped around him in return, holding him just as tightly, both of them basking in the moment of pure joy. “How do you feel?”
Zoro’s eyes softened, a small, almost shy smile breaking through his stoic demeanor.
“A little anxious,” Zoro admitted, “but excited for the future.”
“That’s good to hear.” Sanji had no doubt Zoro was ready to be king. He had worked tirelessly for this, proving himself time and time again. But now Sanji couldn’t help but wonder how he would fit into that future. He raised a scolding finger, his smile turning into a teasing grin. “Don’t think that just because you’re becoming king, you can take back what we talked about earlier.” Sanji leaned in close, his breath brushing against Zoro’s skin, keeping his tone playfully stern. “You’re stuck with me, mosshead. Even if I won’t be the Royal Liaison anymore, I already have plans for how I can help. Starting with your kitchen chefs. They’re way too soft on Luffy. We need to establish some discipline or we’ll be reaching out to Reiju for more supplies within a week.”
Zoro’s grin split wide, his teeth gleaming in the sunlight, but there was something deeper in his eyes.
“Actually,” Zoro said, still grinning, “I already had a role in mind for you.”
Sanji’s curiosity piqued, and he waited for Zoro to continue. He noticed how Zoro’s tail coiled in on itself again, but it was Zoro’s gaze that truly captured him. There was something beautiful burning within them, something that immediately set Sanji’s heart ablaze.
“I have never truly felt ready to take the throne until I started working alongside you.” Zoro confessed, his hands slowly drifted down Sanji’s arms until they reached his own, their fingers intertwining. Zoro’s grip tightened as if anchoring himself to this moment. “The things we’ve achieved together, the way our kingdoms have grown because of it
it’s because of you, Sanji. I can’t imagine facing what’s ahead without you beside me.”
Sanji couldn’t breathe. He could hear the rush of blood in his ears as Zoro’s words sank in. He stayed quiet, too stunned to speak, his eyes wide as he watched Zoro’s next move. With deliberate slowness, Zoro took Sanji’s left hand in both of his and, without breaking eye contact, sank down to one knee.
When Zoro pulled out a small velvet box, time seemed to freeze. The world around them became muted, leaving just the two of them in this sacred clearing. He hadn’t expected this, hadn’t dared to dream that Zoro might be thinking the same thing he was.
“Sanji,” Zoro spoke steadily but was thick with emotion. His gaze bore into Sanji’s with a depth that seemed to strip him bare. “I’ve fought countless battles, faced things I never thought I could survive, but the only fight that ever truly mattered to me was the one to keep you by my side.”
Zoro opened the box to reveal a golden ring. Blue marquise shaped sapphires sat in between golden waves engraved into the band, sparkling as brilliantly as the All Blue that lived in Sanji’s dreams.
Tears now spilled freely down Sanji’s cheeks. He could hardly believe this was real.
“Marry me, Sanji.” Zoro spoke barely above a whisper. “Stay here in Kuraigana and be my king, my husband. I want to spend all my days and all of my nights building a future with you.”
Sanji’s knees trembled beneath him, a laugh breaking through his tears as he choked back a sob.
“Damn it, marimo,” Sanji managed, his voice breaking. Without thinking, he dropped to his own knee in front of Zoro, surprising him. Sanji reached into his pocket, his hands fumbling as he pulled out his own ring box, his heart pounding so fiercely against his ribs that he feared it might break its way free.
Sanji opened it to reveal the elegant silver band. It wasn’t as ornate as Zoro’s, but it had a subtlety that matched Zoro’s charm.
“I was planning to ask you the same thing,” Sanji confessed. He watched Zoro’s eyes widen in astonishment. “I can’t imagine a life without you, Zoro. I want to be here beside you, satisfying every longing in your soul as you have done for mine.”
Zoro’s smile softened.
“You really are something else, cook.” Zoro replied tenderly. He took the ring from Sanji’s box and, without breaking eye contact, slipped it onto his finger. Then, with deliberate care, he took the golden ring from his own box and slid it onto Sanji’s trembling hand.
Sanji couldn’t tear his eyes away from the rings. The sight of them, symbols of a promise they’d just made to each other, filled him with a warmth so profound it seemed to flood his entire being.
He couldn’t stop smiling. Laughter bubbled up from his chest, echoing in the clearing. He leaned forward and captured Zoro’s lips in a deep fervent kiss.

Zoro held Sanji close against his chest, and for a moment, they just lay there, wrapped up in each other. The clearing, the trees, the sky above
all of it seemed to exist solely to bear witness to this moment of pure unbreakable love.
And for Sanji, that was more than enough.
