341: The Waitresses // Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?
Tumblr media
Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? The Waitresses 1982, Polydor
The Waitresses were such a peculiar project: considered a borderline novelty band based on their two hit singles (no wave-y stripper anthem “I Know What Boys Like” and wondrous ska noel song “Christmas Wrapping”), their membership connects dots between the ‘70s Akron scene (Devo, Tin Huey), Television, the Psychedelic Furs, and John Zorn, and featured an actual waitress on lead vocals. Said waitress, Patty Donahue, was a true natural at the post-punk sprechgesang thing. For other singers, a flat affect was often a way to mask shyness or to de-emphasize the vocalist’s personality. Donahue was cool enough to simply be herself up there, sarcastic, fabulous, smart, and messy. She makes the lyrics sound so natural you assume she’s basically singing her diary—which is why not a day goes by without some bright young woman, who’s felt utterly seen by a song like “No Guilt,” giving a startled “Oh!” at the realization the very much male Chris Butler wrote all the words.
youtube
Their debut Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful? is often nearly as prog as it is punk (try to follow the zig-zagging “Quit” or “Heat Night”), the songs crammed with wild hairpin tempo changes and skronky bridges that somehow still sound like something you might hear playing over the PA at the grocery store. They need all that busy-ness to accommodate Butler’s absurdly verbose lyrics, which have the respect for meter of a jazzy spoken word recital (so none, I mean). The musicians need to really have their working boots on to keep this stuff feeling poppy, but for the most part they nail it with panache.
And those lyrics! I can think of few albums as legitimately clever as this one, even forty years on. Donahue’s glib performance of a young woman getting her shit together on “No Guilt” could describe any number of girls I knew in college and, from what I glean from social media anyway, still works for the present generation. And truly, today’s assembly line of singer-songwriters trying to score clout by writing the most withering lowercase boy-bye diss (see Kara Jackson’s damp “therapy” for one) wish they could do what Butler does with “Jimmy Tomorrow.” The potshots are sparkling (“There's nothing that's wrong with me / That money can't cure / But I don't want to be somebody else's / Learning experience / Some rich kid's way to spend his allowance”), but Butler understands that the woman in the story’s more intriguing than the bad ex, and by keeping her the focus of the monologue he finds both a pithy diagnosis of her social ailments (“It's what happens when your choices / Are narrowed to fashion or violence”) and her emotional ones (“I guess I set impossible goals / And I don’t know when to quit / Is that it?”). On an album with no ballads and little sentimentality, Donahue’s vocal finds something really resonant in these lines, even as the band absolutely goes off behind her. But for the Waitresses, angst was always best used as a springboard for a brilliant punchline, and they end the album with an all-timer: “My goals? / My goals are to find a cure for irony and make a fool out of God.”
The band didn’t last long (two LPs and an EP), and it’s not clear whether their very specific brand of schtick could’ve survived the transition from new wave to alternative rock without losing its dazzle. But Butler and Donahue deserve to be mentioned when the all-time great lyricist/vocalist tandems are discussed, because like a good kitchen / front of house pairing, they make a very complex business look seamless.

Birthday Musician Finley Quaye, born 25th March 1974, Edinburgh.
Quaye comes from a musical background with Ghanaian lineage - his father was the jazz singer/pianist Cab Kaye, while his brother Caleb Quaye played guitar for Hookfoot and Elton John in the 70s, followed by a stint with Hall And Oates in the 80s. Quaye was raised in Manchester and on leaving school he returned to Edinburgh, where he worked as a paint sprayer, and often drove to Newcastle to attend gigs by artists such as 808 State and Soft Cell.
Moving back to Manchester, he embarked on a BTEC course in music and sound engineering, but did not complete his tuition. He briefly relocated to London where he joined the Donga Tribe and practised drumming. His aspirations towards a singing career began when he returned to Manchester, where he voiced a track for A Guy Called Gerald in one take. Shortly after the session, he returned to Edinburgh, where he unexpectedly heard the track on the radio, and subsequently began listening to dub music. His initial inspiration came from an unorthodox source, the New York-based avant-gardist John Zorn’s ‘Black Hole Dub’, although he was later inspired by more conventional performers.
Quaye recorded his first solo outing on a four-track tape, singing and playing drums, bass and guitar. In March 1997, he released the Ultra Stimulation EP, which demonstrated his diverse influences, including Charles Mingus, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. He also embarked on the live circuit, debuting at Bristol’s Malcolm X centre, where he supported Luciano.
In June, he released ‘Sunday Shining’, which gave a nod to Bob Marley’s ‘Sun Is Shining’, as well as other reggae hits including Dennis Brown’s ‘Money In My Pocket’. The song, delivered in a style similar to that of a young Burning Spear, became his first UK chart hit and Quaye’s unique approach was much lauded by the critics. The promotional wheels were set in motion with appearances at the major summer festivals, including the Essential Roots Day alongside Everton Blender, Cocoa Tea and Anthony B. in Finsbury Park, London, and the release of his debut album. Further chart success followed with the singles ‘Even After All’, ‘It’s Great When We’re Together’, and ‘Your Love Gets Sweeter’, and he was voted Best Male Singer at the 1998 BRIT Awards.
I wish I could say Leither, Quaye had gone from strength to strength, but he has had a troubled life since then, appearing in several courts on various charges after unsavoury incidents, one was over an argument over Game Of Thrones.  He was once booed off stage halfway through a performance at a Madness festival in 1998, billed as a pre World Cup bash, Finley endeared himself to the English partisan audience by making derisory statements concerning the England football squad’s likely performance in the competition, just normal Scottish banter, but the English didn’t see it that way!
In 2015 he played a gig in Gloucester, not turning up for the soundcheck, eventually the gig began at 9pm and Quaye started playing with his back to the audience, the gig promoter appeared and ended it, kicking him off stage telling the audience he had never seen a man act so unprofessionally and telling them he would refund their money. In 2019 he was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work for punching a bar manager and threatening to stab him during an unprovoked drunken attack.
He was convicted of  of criminal damage after he admitted throwing sign through a bus door during a row over a fare that happened in 2020.
He is back was back on stage a couple of years ago, as he celebrates the 25th Anniversary of his double-platinum debut album Maverick A Strike at Edinburgh’s Liquid Rooms on Wednesday 1st June and Glasgow’s Oran Mor on Thursday 2nd June 2022, he is also playing The Garage, London on May 27th.
I've not found a lot oof Finley lately, I hope he is well, I guess he does struggle with his mental health, like I do and\many more of us.

A voi.
youtube

I have started going through a list of 500 ~avant garde~ albums I found on rym and I will now use this blog to give my thoughts on every one
What I have been to up (briefly) so far:
Moondog- moondog: I think I want to change my name to moondog
The pop group- y: post punk like this makes me so happy I have nothing else to say
Tim buckley- starsailor: whatever you think this album sounds like based on the over it does Not sound like that
The mothers of a invention- uncle meat: idk why Zappa doesn’t hit for me but most of the time I was just thinking “that’s nice frank” alsjfhdhdhdw
Henry cow- in praise of learning: I kind of forgot about this one already but I think it was good
Ground zero- revolutionary pekinese opera ver.1.28: Holy Fuckin Shit. There are a couple moments on this album that are some of my favorite moments in music ever. I’m gonna pretend that Disney interpolation at the end doesn’t exist though
Mingus- the black saint and the sinner lady: Holy Shit. MAN does the last track in particular hit
John zorn- naked city:….it wasn’t as abrasive as I thought it was going to be so honestly I’m kind of disappointed
Today is the day- sadness will prevail: as much as I appreciate intentionally grating albums with shit production and bad vocals (I’m not kidding here I mean it lol) there was really one stretch of songs in the middle that stayed with me and the rest of the TWO AND A HALF HOUR LONG ALBUM came and went
Sachiko m, toshimaru nakamura, otomo yoshihide- good morning good night: I fall into the camp of “random tones played at random intervals is good music actually” but if you have any health issues that may be exacerbated by high pitched tones playing for a long time than you should probably avoid this at all costs aldjfhshdhs
Gorguts-obscura: it’s masterfully played death metal but I feel like you can tell if youll like it or not like two tracks in
William basinski- the disintegration loops: my brain has been too addled by years of political discourse and George bush memes to be able to assess with Accidental Soundtrack To 9/11 with any clarity NEXT
Scraping foetus off the wheel- nail: theater kid (complimentary)
The residents- not available: theater kids (derogatorily but in a complimentary way)
Contortions- buy: not my favorite no wave album ever but I just love no wave so much that it doesn’t really matter
This heat-this heat: I listened to deceit a while back and I didn’t hit as much as a expected it to but but thankfully this one works a lot better for me. It’s also helping with the developing theory that no matter how experimental you think music can get nowadays some random guys were doing the exact same thing better in the 70s
Anyway that is all so far see you next time

“Poly (and 74 Musicians)”
