"CommUNITY"

Emerging from the graffiti and skateboarding subculture of 1990s Madrid, Ruben Sanchez uses vibrant color and asymmetry to create "a personal style where visual balance, chain reactions and connectivity flirt with cubism and abstraction, evoking portraits of an imperfect society." In 2019 Sanchez was invited to help enrich the San Antonio site of Hemisfair '68 with CommUNITY. "CommUNITY is an idea built with four different characters in balance, each one inspired by different values such as knowledge, culture, environmental consciousness or education."

MONDAY MURALS | RUBEN SANCHEZ AKA ZOONCHEZ

Artist Ruben Sanchez aka Zoonchez recently created this massive mural in Jersey City–a tribute piece to hip hop culture and its origins. From the color palette (referenced from Sugarhill Gang’s famous verse from ‘Rappers Delight’) to the old school block party scene painted, Sanchez’s beautiful creation is a visual homage that mixes in history, hip hop, and creativity.

“FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS”

In the 1998 Terry Gilliam movie, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, based on Hunter S. Thompson’s book, Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro apparently embark on an exploration of Las Vegas while under the influence of an inventory of psychoactive drugs. Sanchez says those familiar with the film will find the connection here obvious. Painted on Las Vegas Blvd. at Fremont St. in 2015 for Las Vegas’ annual Life Is Beautiful Festival the mural begs interesting questions about the juxtaposition of themes—movie and festival—although given the superficiality of beauty sometimes associated with Sin City maybe this makes complete sense. In any case the striking work by Madrid-born Sánchez reflects both the subject of freedom he says is constantly present in his work, and his recurring influences of “the Mediterranean and Arab culture, graphic design and visual psychedelia.”  @zoonchez  @lifeisbeautiful
