Here is the scarlet-bodied wasp moth I saw in the garden yesterday that I couldn’t get a good shot of on the live video feeding on some Plains Coreopsis I’ve been seeing a lot of biodiversity out in my garden, and it feels so awesome . . . #nativeplants #nativegarden #scarletbodiedwaspmoth #nativeinsects #insects #moths #Cosmosomamyrodora #americanmeadows #nativesoutheastwildflowers #wildflowers #biodiversity #zone9a #coreopsistinctoria https://www.instagram.com/p/CgS9zBYu99J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A bit of sketching in the garden before work today. And yes, I know the weeds have gotten a little out of hand. I know it’s weird but I don’t mind the weeds to an extent. We have reached the point where it’s time to pull some up though. What are you up to this weekend? #sketching #sketchbook #vegogarden #gardensketch #gardensketching #garden #outdoors #backyard #zone9a #zone9agardening (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcIeK8VuNmb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

No, those aren’t peppers. They are tomatoes, San Marzano tomatoes to be precise. This variety is a type of plum tomato that originated in Italy and has a deep, rich flavor making them great for eating fresh or canned. What’s your favorite variety of tomato? #sanmarzano #tomatoplants #sanmarzanotomatoes #italiantomato #plumtomatoes #stillgreen #unripe #zone9a #green #fruitsofinstagram #juicy #rich #sunset #gardenpics #inmygarden #boldflavour #fruitofthespirit #gardensofinstagram #houston #farmers #canningtomatoes #tomatosauce #needtime #houstonfood #houstonfoodie #houstonproducer #houstonmarket #perfectpearmarket #comingsoon #growbabygrow (at The First Best Thing Farms) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQjPKYcBgDu/?utm_medium=tumblr

My hibiscus is going to bloom again sometime in the next week and a half or so. This is probably my second favorite flower, and I feel like it’s also probably one of the few plants I own that I could get more of without adding too much extra work for myself.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop being amazed by all the different types of plants that can grow in this climate. I haven’t lived here my whole life, but I did spend my childhood here, and I still feel like I’ll never know if it was just me and my “learning curve” in figuring out how to grow things, or if I really did notice climate change over the past 30 years. All I know is that I attempted to grow lemon trees in probably about 1992-1993 in this same area, but couldn’t even get them to sprout.

A few years ago, I found an old magazine article from 1989 or 1990 (my family saves everything, and I come from a long line of gardeners) that said this area was zone 7b. I’m not sure when the change happened, but we’re now considered zone 9a.
As long as the soil drains well, most citrus trees do well in this climate year around. Now that I know this, if I had a bigger yard, I’d definitely plant all those trees pictured above.

Why Should I Plant Cover Crops? If you're lookin' for reasons to plant cover crops in your garden or on your farm, you're in the right place. Cover crops will help your land in a multitude of ways, so it's worth understanding their benefits and use cases. Before we talk about those benefits, let's first discuss what exactly cover crops are and why you should care about them. What Are Cover Crops? For starters, what even is a cover crop, anyway?? Cover crop is a broad term for any plant which helps protect or improve your soil health. Cover crops have a critical role to play in soil health improvement and conservation. Improved soils increase plant yields and improve plant health, which means more food for you or more profitability from your yields. While many farmers and ranchers have been familiar with cover crops forever, covers are often a completely new concept to gardeners. We'd [...]

How to Improve Soil Quality Over Time Soil improvement and remediation is so important for every organic gardener or farmer to understand, and is one of the pillars of regenerative agriculture. Here we'll discuss how to improve soil quality over time, and consider the time scale in which you're going to do it. First, let's talk about soil health in general - how to assess your soil quality and understand its needs. Understanding Soil Health Without knowing anything about your soil, it's going to be very difficult to understand what needs to be done to improve it. Gaining insight into your soil health is the first step towards a path forward. Let's discuss some ways you can understand what you're working with before prescribing solutions.
