         there was a rule of thumb that his mother told him before he took over the auto shop don’t flirt with the customers and most of the time matthew followed the code. maybe breaking it once in awhile to compliment a regular, or to get a smile out of someone that seemed to be having a rough one. however with zoe the rule all but left his brain. it was harmless fun and he never crossed any lines, but now that he had gotten her car back to running it was time for the fun to end.

cheesy grin spreading across his lips as she made her way into the shop, “ Well there’s my favorite customer.” he’s quick to tease wiping his hands on the rag in his back pocket he strolls over to her. “ I dunno how I’m going to survive without these weekly check in’s now that we figured out the problem and got it fixed.” a faulty fuse was all that had matthew banging his head against the wall and cussing the makers which only had infuriated him further to see how easy of a fix it actually was.

“Would you believe me if I told you that Sara almost considered doing nothing but lights this year?” Aspen said, climbing down the ladder leaned carefully against the ivory paint of the house. He’d been taking down Halloween decorations all morning in preparation for the next season now that they’d had their fill with his children’s classmates passing by to gawk at its feigned haunted corners. It was now time for fall, and soon enough, the holidays split between Aspen’s celebrations and that of his wife. The last few years they had decorated under Sara’s insistence to fit along with the neighborhood, and for their children’s holiday spirit. This year, however, she proposed they do minimal efforts with no explanation.

He sealed one of the boxes on the porch, the howling of a ghoul locked inside muffled. “And here I was thinking I’d have to re-budget for the sake of a seven foot Pottery Barn nutcracker.”

The Nutcracker was some kind of vacuity against the truth of the circumstance at hand, a glaze that even Aspen had started to believe ever so often. Laced under his ramblings, was a small plea that someone else felt the shift in tone of his home, and who better than to notice it than Zoe?
