re8 thought dump because YE
i feel like this was almost inevitable but idk where else to talk about resident evil village so i’m just going to rant about it here!!! i have,,,, a lot of thoughts on this game after being so excited for it for so long
obviously, massive spoilers if you haven’t finished the game. i feel like i have thoughts on pretty much everything so please please please stay clear of this post if you’re trying to stay blind
otherwise, let me just rant about this game for a bit - mainly the story and characters - because i have Thoughts™
(also i feel like it goes without saying but this will be probably be quite long, so. strap in, ig)
okay SO. the whole intro was pretty interesting - even though we’d seen bits of it in trailers, it was still pretty unnerving and felt like it came out of nowhere. but the first thing that really stood out was the first village section with the hordes of lycans; i didn’t expect this game to start freaking me out so quickly but JESUS my blood pressure went up fast.
there’s so many of them coming at you at once, and not only have you just lost half your damn hand, you’re not really used to the gunplay at that point AND you don’t have that many weapons at your disposal. so it’s basically just “hey we’re throwing you into this ring of death, good luck surviving!” which... now that i think about it, that really sums up the whole game lol
Tumblr media
but for the most part, the early parts of the game are what we saw in the demos, so there’s nothing too new - it was nice getting to see the scene with all four lords and mother miranda, though. i wasn’t sure how the whole chase scene with the lycans would work - i thought heisenberg’s area was going to be some sort of mine, and that the chase would take place there - but it didn’t, and it was interesting regardless of it being so short.
but the castle. THE CASTLE.
Tumblr media
i would be lying through my teeth if i said i wasn’t excited for dimitrescu like everybody else; i’m firmly in the camp of people who both meme about how attractive she is, and then also the people who legitimately find her attractive, soooo i kinda had high expectations going in?
and sure, the castle section is only part of the game, but if there’s anything that makes me nervous most, it’s stalker enemies. resi 2 remake was actually pretty tough for me to get through because of how anxiety-inducing mr x was, and even though i don’t feel like she was as present as mr x was, lady d was still great! there were a good few times where you could hear her walking around and you just knew she was searching for you, which was really damn cool.
also, i know capcom had a lot of hype to live up to with lady dimitrescu, but goddamn they did such a great job with her. she’s so imposing but badass and just... really damn cool? like i honestly found myself being excited for her to show up rather than being scared. i just think she’s neat! I MEAN LOOK AT HER.
Tumblr media
(also yes i know the whole internet has talked about how attractive she is, but can we just. appreciate that for a second???? she’s gorgeous and yall can’t tell me otherwise. like. bro ik the pronunciation is wrong but the way she says dimitrescu made me GASP i love this powerful vampire woman)
if anything, though, i... actually felt really bad that her story ended up the way it did. i mean, think about it: you break into her house, kill the three people she’s grown to consider her daughters, rob her shit, and then kill her? she technically goes through the same kind of parental grief that ethan does, in a way, which is a really interesting parallel. grief seems to be a theme that capcom really pushed for this game, and it works.
also, her boss fight design is badass. she’s literally a dragon, how is that not incredible
so the castle was great, where could the game go from here? oh, i don’t know, how about gOOD OLD FASIONED FUCKING TRAUMA.
jesus christ the dollhouse GOT TO ME.
Tumblr media
i’m pretty used to horror in general; i love horror games, movies, books, you name it. i’ve gone to horror movies where people have ran out because of fear all while i’ve sat there giggling the whole time. but the dollhouse? that dollhouse is FUCKED. i can’t remember the last time i watched someone play through a horror game and was so... on edge the whole time. the fact that they keep you waiting for so long with nothing happening just... makes the atmosphere incredibly uncomfortable, and then when shit does start going down, it goes down fast. in other words, jesus fucking christ that baby will haunt my nightmares until the end of time
basically capcom managed to make the n*zi baby joke from south park: the stick of truth legitimately terrifying, and i was glad to see donna die. moving on.
moreau’s section is the one i... actually don’t have as many thoughts on. it’s cool, sure, and the whole idea of him turning into a fish when he hits water is neat - it’s definitely a good callback to re4 - but idk, it didn’t really scare me that much. i can see it scaring those with a fear of water or the ocean, for sure, but eh. i thought the designs were cool, but i kinda tuned out a little here.
heisenberg, though, was anything but. the entire time leading up to village’s release, this guy has fascinated me for some reason. i don’t know if it’s because he’s the most normal-looking of the four lords, or the fact that he has telekinesis, or his amazing voice acting (seriously i know some people have shit on his VA but oh my god i adore it) or what, but this guy stood out to me from day one. i even went into the game expecting him not to die tbh. but no, he does, and his fight is pretty damn cool all things considered. only in a resident evil game could you have a mech fight and have it not feel out of place lol
Tumblr media
also this line ^^^ legitimately made me laugh so hard i almost choked on my water. THE FACT HE TURNS AROUND AND APOLOGISES SO MEEKLY its fucking hilarious to me
but anyway.
similar to alcina, though, i was left with one big question about heisenberg - what did mother miranda do to him to get him to join her impromptu familly? he said himself to ethan that he didn’t want to join, so what did miranda do that didn’t give him a choice? did he have a family at some point? is he grieving too? what did miranda take from him? i can only hope this gets answered in the dlc, because it’s by far one of my biggest questions surrounding all of this. i may very well have missed it somewhere, and at least we know he has his telekinesis abilities thanks to miranda, but it’s a question that’ll definitely be on my mind going forward.
at this point, though, the story REALLY gets insane. it’s really nice how village decided to just continue on straight from what 7 did, and i’m very glad that everyone’s theories about chris being a werewolf were wrong - it’s a really nice spanner to throw in the works. if anything, the whole revelation of mother miranda disguising herself as mia the whole time since rose’s birth was really cool, and ethan being Mold™ the entire time was pretty neat too - it made a lot of things both in 7 and village make more sense.
what i’m still digesting, though, is the ending.
Tumblr media
...man, capcom, you put poor ethan through all of that and then you have the balls to actually kill him? i mean shit, you made us think he was dead for a whole 20 minutes but then nope! he’s alive! but then nope! he’s dead again! i did see someone point out that at least ethan got to go out on his own terms, but dammit i would’ve at least liked for him to get to see mia one last time. i think it would’ve softened the blow a little more. but i guess that ties into the whole grief theming this game has going for it, and like i said, i probably just need some more time to digest it.
i don’t dislike the ending, it’s just a very big culture shock - it’s definitely a ballsy move, and i really respect capcom for going all out the way they did. they really held back on nothing in terms of this game’s story and i absolutely love it. it was so, so worth the wait in that regard.
and tbh that’s kinda how i feel about the whole game in general; it was super super good, very much worth the wait, and i absolutely cannot wait to see where resident evil goes from here. i have a gut feeling this’ll end up being one of my absolute favourites in the series, which i know is very high praise, but i really do love it that much. i wasn’t disappointed with much in this game, if anything at all. it’s just a super fucking good video game man idk what else to say at this point

it is still ZOIDS HEADCANON TIME
PART 2 because i’m ridiculous
I'm operating on the assumption that by the time humans colonized Zi they'd spread out pretty well across the rest of the galaxy and p...ossibly made contact with extraterrestrials, mainly because I like to imagine there's intelligent life out there somewhere.  (Intelligent life hat does not look Exactly Like Humans with extra bits stuck on.)
When the Human Federation or w/e discovered Zi and decided it would be feasible to colonize it, there were a lot of engineers/science-y types who really wanted to tinker with robot animals that ended up volunteering and being chosen for the initial expedition, along with various other types you'd want along to build a civilization on a distant planet.  The mechanical organisms were initially dubbed Zi-oids, which over time became corrupted into the simpler name Zoids.  After being tamed, they proved useful as pack animals, modes of transport, farm hands and companions.  Contact with organoids started off pretty hostile but became more relaxed as time went on, per the other post. Eventually, the colonists developed quite advanced (though still very small) Zoids with respectable combat capabilities, designed primarily to protect them from attack by wild Zoids.
At this point only a small portion of the Western Continent had been settled, and while the rest of it still needed to be explored some of the settlers were eager to see what the planet's other continents were like; exploration of these was hindered by savage magnetic storms that made aerial or ocean travel a potentially deadly prospect.  These people observed how organoids could seemingly defy the laws of physics by converting themselves into a pure energy state to teleport from place to place, etc. and started thinking "what if we did that, BUT WITH HUGE TRANSPORT ZOIDS" and began experimenting with smooshing together Organoid Physics-Defying Bullshit with what bits of Spacefaring Technology they'd managed to salvage from the ships that had brought them to Zi.  The result was something that was eventually known as the Zoidcore Overload System, and while it was being tested one day, something went horrifyingly wrong and - to all outside observers, of which there were admittedly very few - the entire settlement vanished without a trace.
IN REALITY it had been transported back in time thousands upon thousands of years, which is blatant Time Travel Bullshit but o well.  (Also Legacy gave us canon time fuckery so god dammit, I'm gonna use it.)  The colonists were disoriented, frightened and cut off from any further contact with their homeworld, but since the entire settlement with all of its farms, greenhouses and other resources had been displaced together, nobody was quite as badly off as they could have been.  Shaken but determined, most of the colony pulled themselves together to push onward with their lives.
Some of the colonists were pretty mad about being temporally displaced and wanted someone to fix it, which of course was impossible, but they attempted to use force to make it happen and got booted out of the colony for being asshats.  Taking their Zoids, organoids and whatever supplies they could carry with them, they wandered off and eventually started another settlement elsewhere.  Both settlements continued developing Zoids, albeit now with more of an eye toward combat practicality now that they knew they had enemies out there.
As this went on, organoids started evolving too - originally small, drab creatures who oversaw whole swarms of wild Zoids as their charges, their species eventually started selecting for individuals who bonded with the human settlers and their Zoids; these specimens grew larger, displayed higher intelligence due to the mental bond they shared with other sapients, and thrived in comparison to their wilder counterparts. They also led less stressful lives as they tended to a single, relatively sedate Zoid rather than having to protect and heal numerous creatures that were constantly being preyed upon by each other.  (They also happened to evolve in a variety of bright colors, due to their human companions’ natural preference for such things.)  Eventually, wild organoids were all but extinct on Zi.
Before too long the colonists discovered the thing they wound up calling Zoid Eve and built the city of Eveopolis around it.  As their population grew and prospered, they made great technological advances and started improving themselves using computerized implants that allowed them to bond more closely with their Zoids, utilize remote "drone" units, and grant some of them seemingly supernatural powers.  They ceased to think of themselves as humans any longer and began calling themselves Zoidians.
Then everyone started fighting over Zoid Eve, the Death Saurer happened, the Zoidian race was decimated after thousands of years of prosperity, and the last handful of survivors went into stasis.
MEANWHILE, ON EARTH
The governments of the world are wary of Zi.  Something bad happened there; they’ve never gotten to the bottom of what caused that first colony to disappear decades ago.  It also seemed to have undergone intense environmental changes - huge swathes of the planet’s western continent are barren desert. It’s basically everyone’s last choice of planet to try and settle.
The fifth son of a royal family has become deeply dissatisfied with his station in life.  Young and ambitious, he’s hungry enough for power that his elders can see he poses a problem, and devise a means of getting rid of him: they charge him with taking a group of imperial citizens to Zi to establish a branch of the royal family there.  The prince knows what they’re trying to do but can’t reasonably defy the order, so he goes.
Thus, Zi is claimed (reluctantly) for the Guylos Empire.
The settlers find the planet tolerable, if not exactly welcoming.  They’re hardy folk from having survived on an increasingly inhospitable Earth, and are willing to work hard to make this new world their home.  They have great success adapting the planet’s native life forms to their uses, and soon have a stable, vibrant civilization living and working alongside Zoids.  Their emperor, too, is pleased with the success of this venture; it wasn’t the kingdom he’d dreamed of, but it is his, and his people are prospering under his rule.
The settlers are curious, of course, about the remnants of a past civilization that they eventually find - ruined structures here and there, the ossified remains of what are definitely Zoids but quite unlike either the wild specimens or anything human engineers have yet come up with.  But much of their lives are taken up by simply living; they focus on the present in order to build themselves a stable future, and have no time to dwell on what happened in the past.
Within a handful of generations, some of the Guylos citizens grow restless and crave freedom from their Imperial masters.  They break off and form the Helic Republic.  The Empire does not suffer this gladly, and war breaks out, raging for several years before an uneasy truce is reached to allow the battered forces of both sides to recover.
The arms race triggered by the outbreak of war drives both the Empire and the Republic to excavate countless ruins of the civilization that called themselves Zoidians.  They make amazing discoveries - advanced technology whose workings they can barely comprehend; Zoids of incredible complexity, though their operating systems and user interfaces render them all but unusable to humans; and capsules.  Rows and rows of capsules, in some places - always a large one accompanied by a much smaller one.  Very few of the small capsules prove useful - the rooms in which they are found are often partially destroyed, the capsules breached by falling debris or the ravages of time - but the larger ones often bear fruit in the form of small, startlingly intelligent Zoids with incredible abilities.
By incorporating elements of ancient Zoidian technology into their designs, the humans of Zi quickly develop more effective weapons - more efficient ways of killing each other.  By the time the truce is reached, Zi’s inhabitants are bone-weary of conflict, many living in worse conditions than their ancestors of centuries past.  While several large cities remain standing - most notably the capitals of the Republic and Empire - most of Zi’s inhabitants are reduced to small settlements, relying on subsistence farming or trade to support themselves, and constantly under threat of attack by bandits or other troublemakers.  It’s a difficult life, but the Zians determinedly struggle on.  Giving up is not in their nature.
THEN CC/GF HAPPENS
Afterward, a small handful of people (mostly military) are aware of the existence of Ancient Zoidians, Organoids and Zoid Eve.  The Death Saurer and Death Stinger are eventually relegated to "wew lad good thing we weren't around for that shit"-style legend.  Helic and Guylos remain on mostly good terms in the ensuing decades, both bonded and scared shitless by the whole Death Zoid mess.  People start using Zoids in happy pretendy funtime battles, and the world at large is a pretty swell place to live.
And then the Backdraft starts digging up Ultimate X Zoids and some other fuckfaces stick Ancient Zoidian AIs into Raynoses that end up being sold to the general public.
Something something Gilvader.

Chapter 1 (Part 4)
Story Leading Zheng Chun Fa to select dried goods from the ingredients shop, he starts talking while in a happy mood, telling me even more about his past with Fo Tiao Qiang--
[ 鄭春發] [Player],謝謝您今天陪我來挑選食材﹗ [Player], xièxiè nín jīntiān péi wǒ lái tiāoxuǎn shícái﹗ [Player], thank you for choosing ingredients with me today!
[Player] 不過舉手之勞, 不必言謝﹗ Bùguò jǔshǒuzhīláo, bùbì yán xiè﹗ It’s merely the exertion of lifting one's hand, no need to say thanks!
[Player] 佛跳牆這道菜, 工序繁瑣, 用料複雜。 想要充分體現十幾種食材的口味與獨特性, 關鍵在於將食材分開單獨烹製。 Fútiàoqiáng zhè dào cài, gōngxù fánsuǒ, yòng liào fùzá. Xiǎng yào chōngfèn tǐxiàn shí jǐ zhǒng shícái de kǒuwèi yǔ dútè xìng, guānjiàn zàiyú jiāng shícái fēnkāi dāndú pēng zhì. In this dish of Fo Tiao Qiang, the process many and complicated, the materials used are complicated. To want to fully embody more than a dozen types of ingredients’s flavour and distinct essence, the key lies in cooking the ingredients separately.
[Player] 而後才能匯聚起來, 加入高湯和紹興酒, 以文火煨製至少十二個小時。 如此,方能成就佛跳牆那種深入骨髓的香醇。 Érhòu cáinéng huìjù qǐlái, jiārù gāotāng hé shàoxīngjiǔ, yǐ wénhuǒ wēi zhì zhìshǎo shí'èr gè xiǎoshí. Rúcǐ, fāng néng chéngjiù fútiàoqiáng nà zhǒng shēnrù gǔsuǐ de xiāngchún. Only then it can come together, add soup stock and Shao Xing wine, use small fire to simmer for at least twelve hours. In this way, only then it can achieve Fo Tiao Qiang’s kind of rich and mellow flavour that penetrates into the bone marrow.
[ 鄭春發] 沒想到您年紀輕輕, 竟對烹飪之事如此熟悉! 就連佛跳牆這種工序繁瑣的大菜都瞭若指掌啊! Méi xiǎngdào nín niánjì qīng qīng, jìng duì pēngrèn zhī shì rúcǐ shúxī! Jiù lián fútiàoqiáng zhè zhǒng gōngxù fánsuǒ de dàcài dōu liǎo ruò zhǐ zhǎng a! I didn’t expect for you being so young, yet so familiar in the ways of cooking! To be familiar with the many complicated procedures of such a great dish like Fo Tiao Qiang like the back of your hand!
[ 鄭春發] 而且我看您的手…… 也是佈滿了燙傷和刀傷的痕跡﹐ 真是可惜了這一雙本應該細嫩的巧手了‥﹒ Érqiě wǒ kàn nín de shǒu…… yěshì bù mǎnle tàngshāng hé dāo shāng de hénjī﹐ zhēnshi kěxíle zhè yī shuāng běn yìng gāi xìnèn de qiǎo shǒule‥﹒ And I see your hands... They are even covered with traces of burns and knife wounds, this poor pair of worned out hands that must have once been delicate ‥﹒
[Player] 我才幾歲的時候, 就已經抬著腳凳站到灶台前學烹飪了。 Wǒ cái jǐ suì de shíhòu, jiù yǐjīng táizhe jiǎo dèng zhàn dào zào tái qián xué pēngrènle. When I was only a few years old, I would already be carrying over a footstool to stand in front of the stove to learn how to cooking.
[Player] 第一次被燙傷的時候, 我哭了好久好久, 幸虧餃子....幸虧我的家人之中有醫術高超的醫師及時為我處理傷勢。 Dì yī cì bèi tàngshāng de shíhòu, wǒ kūle hǎojiǔ hǎojiǔ, xìngkuī jiǎozi.... Xìngkuī wǒ de jiārén zhī zhōng yǒu yīshù gāochāo de yīshī jíshí wèi wǒ chǔlǐ shāngshì. The first time I burned my hand, I cried for a long time, fortunately Jiao Zi ... Fortunately there’s a superb doctor in my family that took care of my injury in time.
[Player] 醫師一邊為我處理傷口, 哥哥們一邊抱著我哄我開心。 弟弟們圍在我的腳邊替我著急, 其中還冑跟著我一起哭的…… Yīshī yībiān wèi wǒ chǔlǐ shāngkǒu, gēgēmen yībiān bàozhe wǒ hōng wǒ kāixīn. Dìdìmen wéi zài wǒ de jiǎo biān tì wǒ zhāojí, qízhōng hái zhòu gēnzhe wǒ yīqǐ kū de…… At the same time the doctor treated the my wound, and the older brothers hugged me as well to comfort me. My little brothers were anxious for me while surrounding my feet, and some of them cried with me ......
[ 鄭春發] 原來您來自一個溫暖的大家庭呀, 怪不得您性情如此開朗樂觀。 我就不一樣了,  我很笨拙, 常常把事情搞砸…… Yuánlái nín láizì yīgè wēnnuǎn de dà jiātíng ya, guàibùdé nín xìngqíng rúcǐ kāilǎng lèguān. Wǒ jiù bù yīyàngle,  wǒ hěn bènzhuō, chángcháng bǎ shìqíng gǎo zá…… So it turns out you’re come from a warm family, no wonder you have a cheerful and optimistic nature. I'm different, I'm very clumsy, always making a mess of things ...
[ 鄭春發] 只有福公...他是第一個, 也是唯一一個對我如此信任的人! Zhǐyǒu fú gōng... Tā shì dì yīgè, yěshì wéiyī yī gè duì wǒ rúcǐ xìnrèn de rén! Only Fu Gong ... He is the first and the only person who have confidence in me!
[ 鄭春發] 福公曾說過, 這聚春苑遲早要交給我全權打理…… 雖然感激福公對我的信任有加, 但這可真是使不得! Fú gōng céng shuōguò, zhè jù chūn yuàn chízǎo yào jiāo gěi wǒ quánquán dǎ lǐ…… suīrán gǎnjī fú gōng duì wǒ de xìnrèn yǒu jiā, dàn zhè kě zhēnshi shǐ bu dé! Fu Gong once said this before, this Ju Chun Yuan will sooner or later be handed over to me to take care of ... Although I am grateful for Fu Gong's extreme trust in me, but this is too unacceptable!
[ 鄭春發] 我根本不敢想像沒有福公的聚春苑會是什麼摸樣... Wǒ gēnběn bù gǎn xiǎngxiàng méiyǒu fú gōng de jù chūn yuàn huì shì shénme mō yàng... I absolutely don’t dare to image what it would be like to have Ju Chun Yuan without Fu Gong....
[Narration] 很想告訴他, 按照現世記載, 即使沒有佛跳牆, 聚春苑也依然是屹立福州城百年不倒的大招牌…… Hěn xiǎng gàosù tā, ànzhào xiànshì jìzǎi, jíshǐ méiyǒu fútiàoqiáng, jù chūn yuàn yě yīrán shì yìlì fúzhōu chéng bǎinián bù dǎo de dà zhāopái…… I really want to tell him, that according to the records of this world, even if there’s no Fo Tiao Qiang, Ju Chun Yuan will still be a largely reputated business that will stands in Fuzhou City for a hundred years ...
[Player] ……對了! 關於挑選海產乾貨, 你有没有什麼心得經驗可以跟我分享呀? ……Duìle! Guānyú tiāoxuǎn hǎichǎn gānhuò, nǐ yǒu méiyǒu shé me xīndé jīngyàn kěyǐ gēn wǒ fēnxiǎng ya? … Right! About the selection of dried sea products, do you have any insights you could share with me?
[ 鄭春發] 您請過來, 看這鮑魚﹗ 香氣濃郁, 唇邊珠花完整, 肥厚圓潤, 透紅且有光澤, 乃是上品。 Nín qǐng guòlái, kàn zhè bàoyú﹗ xiāngqì nóngyù, chún biān zhū huā wánzhěng, féihòu yuánrùn, tòu hóng qiě yǒu guāngzé, nǎi shì shàngpǐn. Please come over here, look at this abalone! Rich aroma, bead-patterned lipping is intact, plump and round, rosy and glossy, it is top grade.
[ 鄭春發] 佛跳牆裡所用魚唇是海味八珍之一, 用鯊魚或其它大型魚的唇和皮加工成的一種海味‧‧‧‧‧‧ Fútiàoqiáng lǐ suǒyòng yú chún shì hǎiwèi bā zhēn zhī yī, yòng shāyú huò qítā dàxíng yú de chún hé pí jiāgōng chéng de yīzhǒng hǎiwèi‧‧‧‧‧ The fish lips used in Fo Tiao Qiang is one of the eight seafood delicacies, it is a kind of seafood processed from the lips and skin of sharks or other large fishes ‧‧‧‧‧‧‧
[ 鄭春發] 這海參刺體粗壯, 說明年齡夠了。 手捏海參有彈性, 那麼泡發以後的海參也會有彈性…… Zhè hǎishēn cì tǐ cūzhuàng, shuōmíng niánlíng gòule. Shǒu niē hǎishēn yǒu tánxìng, nàme pào fā yǐhòu dì hǎishēn yě huì yǒu tánxìng…… This sea cucumber’s spiked body is thick and solid, indicating that it is old enough. There’s a spring when pressing the sea cucumber, and will still have that elasticity soaking...
[ 鄭春發] 瑤柱也是好貨, 您看, 它顆粒完整, 手感乾燥有香氣。 堅實飽滿, 肉質乾硬, 色澤金光…… Yáo zhù yěshì hǎo huò, nín kàn, tā kēlì wánzhěng, shǒugǎn gānzào yǒu xiāngqì. Jiānshí bǎomǎn, ròuzhì gān yìng, sèzé jīnguāng…… Scallop is also a good product, you see, this tiny round thing is intact, it feels dry and has a fragrance. Solid and full, the flesh is dry and hard, the color is bright gold ...
[Narration] 鄭春發教我挑選海產乾貨, 眉頭漸漸舒展。 他在選食材上相當有經驗, 看得出來他對佛跳牆這道菜與其所需食材的瞭解已相當深入... Zhèngchūnfā jiào wǒ tiāoxuǎn hǎichǎn gānhuò, méitóu jiànjiàn shūzhǎn. Tā zài xuǎn shícái shàng xiàng dāng yǒu jīngyàn, kàn dé chūlái tā duì fútiàoqiáng zhè dào cài yǔqí suǒ xū shícái de liǎojiě yǐ xiāngdāng shēnrù... Zheng Chun Fa taches me how to choose dry seafood, his brows gradually smooths out. He is quite experienced in the selection of ingredients, making it plain to see that he is thorough with the Fo Tiao Qiang dish and has a deep understand of the required ingredients ...

[Player] 看來....你很喜歡空桑嘛﹖ Kàn lái.... Nǐ hěn xǐhuān kōng sāng ma? It seems like... you really like Kong Sang?
[ 雞茸金絲筍] 我、 我只是去看一看﹗ 也沒說就要住下來了…… 要是那地方不符合本少爺的品味, 本少爺還是要走的! Wǒ, wǒ zhǐshì qù kàn yī kàn﹗ yě méi shuō jiù yào zhù xiàláile…… yàoshi nà dìfāng bù fúhé běn shàoyé de pǐnwèi, běn shàoyé háishì yào zǒu de! I, I’m just going to take a look! And didn’t say anything about stay here ... Even if that place does not fit this young master’s taste, this young master must still go!
[Player] 是是是, 一切以少爺您的需求為先! Shì shì shì, yīqiè yǐ shàoyé nín de xūqiú wèi xiān! Yes yes yes, everything according to young master’s demands shall be a priority!
[ 雞茸金絲筍] ……我還有些細碎物件沒收完, 不跟你廢話了﹗ ……Wǒ hái yǒuxiē xìsuì wùjiàn mòshōu wán, bù gēn nǐ fèihuàle … I still have some remaining items that have yet to pack, so no more exchanging nonsense with you!
[Player] 雞茸金絲筍轉身便回房收捨去了…… Jī rōng jīn sī sǔn zhuǎnshēn biàn huí fáng shōu shě qùle…… Jo Ring Jin Si Sun turns around and goes back to the building ...
[鵠羹] 少主﹖ 你一個人在這裡做什麼﹖ Shǎo zhǔ﹖ nǐ yīgèrén zài zhèlǐ zuò shénme﹖ Young Miss? What are you doing here alone?
[Player] 鵠羹你來啦? 我在檢查店家送來的貨物有沒有紕漏。 要是到了壽宴那才發現貨物有問題可就麻煩了。 Hú gēng nǐ lái la? Wǒ zài jiǎnchá diànjiā sòng lái de huòwù yǒu méiyǒu pīlòu . Yàoshi dàole shòu yàn nà rì cái fāxiàn huòwù yǒu wèntí kě jiù máfanle. Hu Geng, you’re here? I'm just inspecting if the received goods from the proprietor had any careless mistakes. It would be troublesome if the goods were found to be defective on the day of the birthday banquet.
[鵠羹] 還是少主細心。 不過佛跳牆和雞茸金絲筍已經答應隨少主回空桑, 加之佛跳牆曾囑咐過, 壽宴由鄭春發全權負責。 Háishì shǎo zhǔ xìxīn. Bùguò fútiàoqiáng hé jī rōng jīn sī sǔn yǐjīng dāyìng suí shǎo zhǔ huí kōng sāng, jiāzhī fútiàoqiáng céng zhǔfùguò, shòu yàn yóu zhèngchūnfā quánquán fùzé. It is still Young Miss that is attentive. However, Fo Tiao Qiang and Ji Ring Jin Si Sun have agreed to follow Young Miss to return to Kong Sang, in addition to what Fo Tiao Qiang once said before, the birthday banquet is left for Zheng Chun Fa to take full control and responsibility.
[鵠羹] 少主大可不必如此操勞。 Shǎo zhǔ dà kě bùbì rúcǐ cāoláo. Young Miss need not have to work this hard.
[Player] 哎……或許是因為心裡有些內疚... Āi……huòxǔ shì yīn wéi xīnlǐ yǒuxiē nèijiù... Haa... perhaps it is because the heart is still somewhat guilty...
[Player] 畢竟我看鄭春發是真的十分依賴佛跳牆, 若他知道壽宴過後佛跳牆便要離開福州城... Bìjìng wǒ kàn zhèngchūnfā shì zhēn de shífēn yīlài fútiàoqiáng, ruò tā zhīdào shòu yàn guòhòu fútiàoqiáng biàn yào líkāi fúzhōu chéng... After all, I can see Zheng Chun Fa is really dependent on Fo Tiao Qiang . If he knows that Fo Tiao Qiang will leave Fu Zhou City after the birthday banquet...
[鵠羹] 佛跳牆這麼做, 自然是有他的道理。 Fútiàoqiáng zhème zuò, zìrán shì yǒu tā de dàolǐ. Fo Tiao Qiang doing things this way, naturally he has his reasons.
[鵠羹] 伊摯大人離開空桑, 並將空桑交托给少主, 或許也有相似的原因吧。 Yī zhì dàrén líkāi kōng sāng, bìng jiāng kōng sāng jiāo tuō gěi shǎo zhǔ, huòxǔ yěyǒu xiāngsì de yuányīn ba. Master Yi Zhi departing Kong Sang, and entrusting Kong Sang to Young Miss, maybe it is also for a similar reason.
[Player] 所以他現在還沒回空桑, 是希望我通過重重試煉、 克服種種困難、 得到新的成長嗎... Suǒyǐ tā xiànzài hái méi huí kōng sāng, shì xīwàng wǒ tōngguò chóngchóng shì liàn, kèfú zhǒngzhǒng kùnnán, dédào xīn de chéngzhǎng ma... So that’s why he hasn't returned to the Kong Sang, hoping for me to go through levels upon layers of refinement through fire, overcoming all kinds of tribulations, to grow mature...
Thinking back of father’s style of being carefree and wildly pampering his wife, I helpessly shake my bowed head...
[Narration] 一桶乾貨突然從貨車上翻 了下來, 海產撒了一地...! Yī tǒng gānhuò túrán cóng huòchē shàng fānle xiàlái, hǎichǎn sāle yī dì...! A barrel of dry goods was suddenly flipped off the freight wagon, seafood scattering all over the place ...!
[餘腥蟹] (the fishy smelling crab enemy) ....!
[Player] 這裡怎會有食魘﹗ 鵠羹, 快制住它﹗ 不要讓他傷害店裡的客人﹗ Zhèlǐ zěn huì yǒu shí yǎn﹗ hú gēng, kuài zhì zhù tā ﹗ bùyào ràng tā shānghài diàn lǐ de kèrén﹗ How can there be a Food Nightmare here! Hu Geng, stop it quickly! Don't let him harm the customers in the shop!
[鵠羹] 是, 少主﹗ Shì, shǎo zhǔ﹗ Yes, Young Miss!

Post Zi-O Concepts: Bringing the boy into the fold
Okay, so, we’re currently 11 hours away from the last episode of Zi-O airing, and I’ve got a whole lot of ideas for how to introduce Sougo into Riders ReUnited. I don’t know if I’ll use any of these, most of them are pretty out dated, but I really wanted to share them before I lost the chance.
Please keep in mind that when I wrote some of these, not only had I not quite finished Decade, but also we were in the middle of the Kiva arc, and thus I had no way of knowing that Tsukasa and Daiki were coming back. Nor did I have any clue that we were actually going to have Gou appear in-show. Er, in-movie. So, y’know. I was working off of what we had at the time. The later ones were from early June, between the Kabuto and Den-O arcs.
Also, these are largely un-edited, because I wrote them at work. I’ve fixed them up for formatting, but that’s about it. No content or contradiction fixes here. My apologies for the math or failures thereof. My additional apologies for Sougo being a bit out of character – I was doing my best, and my best wasn’t great at times.
(CIRCA MAY 19)
Sougo sighs, turning his fork over in his hand, again and again, not really seeing what’s on his plate. It’s a bit of an insult to his uncle – okay, a /lot/ of an insult, if he hadn’t wanted to fix clocks so bad he really could have been a professional chef – but.
But it’s just the two of them again.
It hasn’t been the two of them in a long time.
Heh, ‘time.’ That used to not matter. He could go anywhen he needed to.
But Geiz and Tsukuyomi and Woz aren’t here anymore. They don’t need to be here – he’s never going to be Oma Zi-o, not going to be a king. He still has the belt, and the watches, but.
He doesn’t need them now.
They’re done.
He doesn’t need the watches, but…  he needs his friends.
He’d almost forgotten what loneliness was. It’s really hard to go back to, especially now that his uncle has called him out on it.
The door chimes.
“Oh, a customer this early? I’ll go get that.” His uncle gets up, but casts Sougo a worried glance. “Sougo-”
“I’ll be fine, don’t worry. I just need to adjust a little.” He grins at his uncle – and he knows that they both know that it’s fake. “Go on ahead.”
“If you’re sure.” The old man heads out into the storefront.
“Hello, we’re not actually open just ye- Oh, you’re one of Sougo’s friends, aren’t you?!”
The uptick in his uncles voice is weird. Besides, he only had the three – Geiz, Tsukuyomi, and Woz – so he must mean it’s someone from school. Probably here to get something that’s definitely not a clock fixed-
“Ah, yes, I am. Mr. Tokiwa, was it?”
…Wait. He knows that voice.
“Yes, yes, right. You were- oh, what was it-”
“Takeru. Tenkuji Takeru. Is… is Sougo in?”
“Yes, but he’s not really in the mood to see anyone, his friends just moved out, you see-”
What is – what is Ghost doing here? He – okay, yes, he’s one of the few riders who came here, but why would he come to 9-to-5? And ask for Sougo? When he, by all rights, shouldn’t remember any of that happening?
“I know. I… heard, from Kadoya.”
Kado- that’s Decade. How-?
“I’m here to pick Sougo up, actually. There’s some people who want to see him again.”
…What on earth is going on out there?
Against his better judgement – not that his judgement’s that great to begin with – Sougo goes out into the lobby. “Takeru?”
The brunette beams at him. “Hey there, Sougo. It’s been a while. Everyone’s waiting for you.”
“What are you talking about?”
Takeru’s smile drops a bit. “Some of your information was a bit… off. We all know what was going on. Just… can you come with me? There’s a bit of a get-together, and it’d be a good time.”
Sougo doesn't reply.
In the end, it’s his uncle who decides for him. “I think it’d be a great idea. Sougo, you should go. Get out of the house for a bit. Okay?”
“…Mm-hm. Okay.”
“Great!” Takeru grins. “Do you still have your bike, or will you need a lift? It’s a bit of a distance, so…”
Sougo gives him a wary glance. “…Yeah? I’ve got a bike.”
“Good!”
He turns to his uncle. “I guess I’ll see you later, then.”
“Have fun!” The smile he gives Sougo is only about half forced.
Pocketing the bike watch, along with his belt and his personal ridewatch – just in case, he tells himself – Sougo follows his senior – who shouldn’t remember being his senior – out the door.
–––––
That. Is a really weird looking motorcycle.
Takeru must see the way Sougo pauses, because he laughs. “I know, right? It used to only look like this when I transformed. I got some help modifying it to look like this all the time about a year ago.”
“So, you-”
“We all remember being Riders, Sougo. We’re all still Riders.” He holds up a small ball. “We never stopped.” It looks like the shoulder pads when he used the Ghost armor, so-
“What are those, anyway?”
Takeru’s smile is a little more forced. “It’s called an Eyecon. They… well, it’s what I use to transform. Honestly, though, we should get going.”
“Where are we even heading?”
“My place. I’m close, I have room, and I was supposed to host last month, but then Eiji and Ankh showed up in Japan again, so Miss Chiyoko took over, so now the get together’s at the temple again.”
“Who are any of those people?!” The two start to drive off.
“You’ll meet Ankh soon enough, and you’ve already met Eiji. Hino Eiji, he’s Kamen Rider OOO.”
“Oh, right, the senator.”
Takeru seems to choke on air at that. “Oh my g- is that what he had to do?! Man, no wonder him and Hina refused to talk about it. …Well, that and who his ‘another rider’ was… Let’s just. Let’s just get to the temple, and explanations can happen there, okay?”
“…Sure.”
––––
There’s a lot of motorcycles outside the temple gate.
Like, a lot of them. And two cars.
There’s one that’s green and black, next to one of the cars. [Philip, Shotaro, Ryu, Akiko, Haruna]
Three identical bikes, all of them looking somehow both sleek and bulky at once. [Eiji (large), Ankh, Date, Gotou, Hina]
One that looks weirdly like a space shuttle, and one that’s blue with star patterns. [Gentaro, Kengo, Ryusei]
A red-and-black one, with a yellow front that looks like a cut gem. [Haruto]
Two that have cherry blossom patterns, and one with a rose. [Kouta, Micchy, Kaito, Mai]
Then the other car, a white bike with red stripes, and – what is with the purple one? Why are there skull designs on it?! [Shinnosuke, Kiriko, Eiji (small), Gou, Chase]
Takeru parks his – which looks like a spectral unicorn – next to one that’s blue with chains. [Takeru, Makoto, Alain, Akari, Onari, Kanon]
A bright yellow bike with pink spikes on the front, and a white one with… a hospital logo? That can’t be right, but… Nope, there it is. [Emu, Parad, Kiriya (not the pictured bike), Hiiro, Taiga, Nico, Poppy]
The last one looks like it has one of those bottles that Sento used to become Build sticking out of it. [Sento, Ryuuga]
There's an empty space to the side of it – and Sougo abruptly realizes… that spot is meant for him. [Sougo]
“How… many people are here?”
Takeru purses his lips. “Um… rider-wise… 25, 26 including you. Total people… er, additional 2 with Fuuto, 2 with Eiji and the Births, only one from the KRC, nobody from Haruto’s group, I think Mai came this time, two from Shinnosuke, three from here, another two from the university, because Poppy and Nico keep saying ‘they don’t count as riders’ which literally nobody else agrees with… so. Wow, 37 people all told, counting yourself.”
“That’s… a lot.”
“Yeah, it’s gonna be kinda crowded.” Takeru laughs. “Good thing the weathers supposed to hold up!” He nods to the empty spot. “Go ahead and leave your bike there – Gou said he wanted to get a picture of all the equipment together.”
“Who’s Gou?”
“Photographer, stuntman, and rider.”
–––––
Upon seeing the crowd, and the tables, and food, but most of all the crowd, Sougo balks. “Are… you sure you want me here?”
“We’re sure. You’ve finished, right? You may have noticed we never really retire, but… there’s less to worry about, now.” The look Takeru gives him is warm. “Wait here, there’s three folks in particular who wanted to be the first to see you.”
He leaves for a few minutes, and Sougo sits on a nearby bench. He feels… it’s not the eyes of everyone on him, they aren’t looking right at him. But it feels like they expect something. By all rights, they should be mad at him – he took their powers, after all, and even if they ‘entrusted’ them to him, it’s still not fair to them-
“Sougo? Sougo, breathe, okay?”
Someone’s- someone’s kneeling in front of him, with their hands on his shoulders – why can’t he see who – oh, he’s crying, why is he crying, that doesn’t make any sense-
“You don’t need to worry, we’re not mad at you. Like you said, we trusted you, and you did great.”
Oh, no, was he saying all that out loud, that’s- “I’m sorry, I caused so much trouble and it was my fault-”
“Hey, hey, none of that now. Here, use this, get cleaned up a little-” Whoever’s in front of him hands him a tissue, which he uses to wipe away most of the tears. “That better?”
It’s – what was his name… oh, right- “Doctor Hojo?”
‘Doctor Hojo’ sighs, as Takeru laughs somewhere behind him. “Not this again…” He still grins, though. “If we were at the hospital, yeah, it would be. Just ‘Emu’ is fine while we’re here, though. It’s nice to see you under better circumstances.”
“Uh- yeah, I guess. What is all of this?”
Two more people come up to the small group – that’s, oh man, Build and Cross-Z – no, Sento and Ryuuga. “Emu started it… what was it, a year and a half ago?” Sento looks to Emu, who nods. “Right then, a year and a half, now, give or take a few months.”
“I wanted all of the Kamen Riders to be able to get together, support each other, and all that. We weren’t allowed to tell you before – the time travel experts have said that it would ‘wreak havoc on the laws of causality’ and ‘no one could ever complete their journey if their seniors were guiding them every step of the way’.” Emu’s making sarcastic air quotes every so often, which – well, it does make Sougo smile, because clearly he’s ticked off about it, but understands the reasoning.
Actually, remembering when they met… making him smile was probably the goal.
Ryuuga snorts. “Yeah, like everyone didn’t wind up doing that this time around anyway.”
“Heh…” Sougo chuckles. “‘This time around.’ Because of the time travel. I get it.”
Both Ryuuga and Takeru look incredibly offended. “GOD F-” Ryuuga cuts himself off at Emu and Takerus matching glares. “I mean- Come on, I didn’t mean for that to-”
Takeru shakes his head. “Why with the puns… they just keep sneaking up on us…”
Emu rolls his eyes. “Anyway. This is us, wanting to actually get to know you. You’re one of us, after all.”
Sougo squints. “…Really?”
“Yup.” Sento ruffles his hair – he’d be offended if he weren’t already kind of in shock. “We're Kamen Riders. We help people. It’s what we do.”
“I’ll be back,” Takeru turns away. “I wanna get that photo taken, so we can get some of these bikes out of the front gate, at least.”
––––
“Gou” turns out to be Shijima Gou, Kamen Rider Mach, who is apparently, in addition to a photographer, some sort of absurdly skilled gymnast, given how he gets into a tree to set up his camera. He practically bounces to get up there. It’s impressive. Even more impressive is his use of little model bikes to adjust the camera, and-
“Are… those a dinosaur and a dragon?!”
One of the other riders, in a long sweater with binder clips in his hair, laughs. “Yeah, Fang and Cross. Ryuuga and I are loaning them out for this – they’re coming right back to us after.”
“Um... Sorry, I don't think we've met…”
“Nah, we didn't.” A man in a waistcoat settles his arm over the other. “Nice to finally meet you, kid. Shotaro and Philip Hidari, Kamen Rider Double. Both of us, at once. It's complicated.”
Sougo gapes.
“There's actually a lot of body sharing around here.” Sweater – Philip – scratches the side of his nose. “I did the research, last year. I still have the notes saved to my phone, I can show you if you want-”
“No, no! That’s! Fine! It's not actually anything new to me!”
““Oh?”” Philips eyes light up as the two speak in unison.
“Heh, well…” Sougos smile is wistful. “Me, Geiz and Woz… we got this one form, called Trinity, where they, er, got turned into giant watches, and then we were all basically swapping control of my body.”
A man in a leather jacket mumbles. “Kadoya was right... he is a mini-him.”
“Er?”
“Terui Ryu, Kamen Rider Accel. Don't worry about it. You're far and away less annoying than he is.”
“Who?”
“Decade.” Going by the shadow that crosses his face, Sougo decides not to ask why Trinity would remind him of Decade. As far as he remembers, there was something about ‘going between worlds’ and, of course, the form copying, but that was about it…
“Alright, places, come on, people, we don't have all day!” Gou yells from his perch. “First shot's riders only, second round, we add in the rest of- OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!”
Some of the senior-most riders have pulled out their belts, seemingly on instinct, at the appearance of a rippling wall of air. Sougo then realizes that he did the same. After all, the last few times he saw one of those, he’d been shot into the future, met his evil future self, and then the next time had all of his watches stolen.
Both of those two – Decade and Diend – step through, with their bikes in tow, as well as a man and woman, with yet another motorcycle… and a small robot bat, hovering at the woman's shoulder.
“No, no, NO!” Gou does a flip as he jumps down. "You're gonna throw off the composition! We don't have room for three more motorcycles!”
Terui and Drive – Shinnosuke – sigh. ““We'll move our cars.””
“If I still had the Tridoron…” Sougo hears Drive mumble. “But noooo, Krim had to go down to his depression garage and take it with him.”
Everyone has to move out of the way so the cars can pull out – Sougo's pretty sure he hears Accel mutter something about how it makes sense anyway because ‘he's his own bike’ – so that the three new motorcycles can be added in.
After directing everyone into new places, Gou climbs the tree again, to readjust the camera. “Okay, NOW we're ready, right?!”
A resounding chorus of affirmatives goes around the area.
“Great!” He leaps down – Shinnosuke and his wife tense every time he does this; apparently he’s her brother – and makes his way to his spot. “Okay, in three- two- one-”
The flash goes off in a series of bursts, before everyone relaxes from their poses. He heads up the tree again, to direct the relations into the area for the next shoot.
Sougo starts to tremble. “This isn't right…”
He feels a firm hand clasp his shoulder, and looks up to see Ryuuga smiling sadly at him. “‘Cuz the rest of your team can't be here, yeah?” Sougo nods. “I get it. Neither can ours. Back in December… that wasn't really them. Well, they were, but they aren't here. We're from a different world than this one, and it's… gone, and the versions of our friends here don't know us, were never riders. There's nothing for them to remember, because it never happened to them. So…” He sighs. “Do your best, okay? We can talk more after.”
Hesitantly, Sougo nods. “Okay.”
But before Gou can get very far in reorganizing the sections…
“TSUKASA, NO!” The woman who arrived with him yells, while the guy that isn’t Diend tries to pull him back.
“But have you considered, Tsukasa, YES?”
“Come on, Tsukasa, please don’t.” The mystery man tries to tug him away. “Don't ruin this for us, half the people here barely tolerate you as is, and this is my first real chance to meet anyone-”
“Aw, come on, I'm not that bad!”
Diend snorts. “At what, photography or backstabbing?”
“Pick one!” Tsukasa stops short. “Wait, no, I meant photography, but still! I've gotten better!”
“““No you haven't!!!”””
At this point, Diend is choking on his laughter, the small bat is now trying to bite Tsukasa's ear, and both the boy and girl are trying to drag Tsukasa from going toward the tree.
Everyone else is just watching.
“Tsukasa…” The woman – Natsumi, apparently – gives Decade a warning look, her thumb raised. “We’d agreed you wouldn’t take any of your shitty photos today. That you were going to be supportive of your junior this time.”
Decade, the self-professed Destroyer Of Worlds, backs away nervously. “N- Natsumikan- Natsumikan, no.”
She grins menacingly, as the other man with them – Yusuke, apparently – grabs Decades arms, holding them behind his back, and thus holding him in place.
“But have you considered, Natsumi, yes?”
The other Riders look on as she jabs her thumb into the side of his neck, and he collapses into uncontrolled laughter. Everyone else stares, dumbfounded, as the two give the same treatment to Diend.
“I’m not gonna lie, it’s always a relief to see that Tsukasa and Daiki aren’t nearly as big of assholes as they try to make themselves out to be.”
Hina – HINA! – nods. “Good thing they have Natsumi and Yusuke to be the sane ones.”
––––
In the end, they were not, in fact, able to stop Tsukasa from taking a photo of the group. He winds up taking several, actually, because apparently his camera can’t shoot wide enough to get the group at once. They resign themselves to allowing him a shoot of the fully assembled group, as well.
“I'll bring all of you the prints once i develop them.” He smirks.
“I apologize for everything he is going to do.” Natsumi sighs. “These two are the worst.” She juts her thumb at Decade and Diend to point at them.
Unsurprisingly, given the earlier display, they both step away nervously when she does that.
––––
Sougo… can't really bring himself to interact with anyone after that. He's still there, it's not that he's zoning out, but… well, he was never good at interacting with people before his parents died, or after he came to live with his uncle, or after he met-
He looks down at his lap, pulling out his ridewatch, and runs his thumb around the base. He doesn’t trigger it, that would just draw attention to him that he really doesn’t want right now.
“Hey, Sougo, you in there, bud?”
“Mm?” Looking up, there's a man with a… okay, wow, nobody here gets to get on him about his wardrobe, because this guy's in a plaid blazer with a pompadour. What the actual hell. “Um, and you are…?”
The man grins. “Gentaro Kisaragi, Kamen Rider Fourze – the guy who’s gonna befriend all the Kamen Riders!” He pulls Sougo to his feet. “Come 'ere, like this.” After guiding Sougo through a complicated handshake, he positively /beams/. “There. Now we're friends!”
“I don't… think that's how friendship works, though…”
“It is with Gentaro. Utahoshi Kengo. So, you're the latest, hm?” The man – Kengo – gives Sougo an appraising look, before sighing. “Well, at least you're older than we were.”
“Eh?”
‘Wow, Sougo, way to go, great first impression, tell the blatant friendship monster he's probably friending wrong, and then look like an idiot in front of this guy what's clearly a scientist-’
“We were 17.”
“EH?!”
––––
“Hey, Zi-O.”
Sougo turns, and. Oh. Okay. It’s Decade. That's great. “Yes?”
“Couple things I wanted to say. First… the day with the bus…” He hesitates – visibly hesitates, and that doesn't seem like him.
“What about it?”
“I was there. I was only able to save Tsukuyomi and myself, so… I’m sorry, I know your parents were on there, and a lot of other people, too, and… I wasn't able to save them, so. I'm sorry for that.”
“It's okay, it was a long time ago, so it doesn't really matter anymore-”
“Wasn't for me. World traveler, remember? Sometimes that includes jumping between points in time. A lot of the time it includes that, actually. So that was only a few months ago for me.”
“…Ah. …Thanks.”
“There's another thing, too. Less awful, though.” He pulls out a folder. “Probably still awful, but in a different way. I thought you ought to have these.” Passing the folder to Sougo, he looks slightly away. “I know I'm supernaturally terrible, but… well, the pictures that I take of Kamen Riders are about the best I can do.”
His forehead wrinkling, Sougo removes the papers from the folder.
They’re all photographs.
There's him, in the dining room – that'd be right after he came back from his deal with Gho- with Takeru.
Geiz, by a warehouse – when…? Wait, that might be the day he met Oma Zi-O.
Tsukuyomi, on a hilltop… “When was this one taken?”
“…The day of the bus accident. I brought her and myself to where that guy brought you and the other kids. This is outside that city.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Woz, giving one of his speeches. Looks like this is when he used Ghost armor for the first time.
“I normally don’t get to give these to the Riders I take them of, since I'm usually on my way out of that World by the time I get around to developing them. I hang onto 'em, though. Since you're ‘done’ now, I figured you should at least get to see them, if nothing else.” He rubs the back of his neck. “I mean, do whatever you want, I know I'm terrible-”
“Thank you.” Sougo rubs at his eyes, before looking up at Dec- at Tsukasa. “Thank you. You have no idea how much this means.”
––––––––
(June 6)
“So…” Looking around, Sougo pauses before continuing to speak. “Dr… Hojo?”
“Seriously, just call me Emu while we're here.”
“Okay then. I can't help but notice… Nobody here was a rider before 2009. How come more people aren't here?”
Emu grimaces a little, at that. “Well, we haven't really been able to contact anyone from then.” He hesitates, his brow furrowing, before continuing. “Well, okay, that's not entirely true. Gentaro’s met Amazon, but most of the riders from the 70's and 80's don't socialize that often.
“Takeru's met Ichigo – the first rider – but never heard back from him with regards to coming.” He shrugs. "We know he's still alive, because Takeru's friends with his grand-niece, and she'd have told us if he'd passed, but that's about all we know. The oldest riders tend to be off around the world. I met Blade, once, but he can't stay in Japan, because apparently his powers would-”
“-would make him have to fight his friend, right?” Sougo interrupts. “I… might have fixed that, actually. For him and his teammate, Chalice.”
Emu holds up a finger. “Hold that thought, please. I'll be right back.” He runs off.
“…What did I say?”
A few minutes later, Emu returns with a tablet. “Okay, I can't believe we didn't think of this.” He laughs. “You went around and met almost everyone – or people who know them – right?”
Sougo nods.
“Who can you reach again?!”
“Well, I can… kinda contact some of them. I know where they'd go back to, anyway.”
A small crowd has started to gather – people curious to see what's going on, people who'd heard Emu's shout and wondering just who they might meet.
Sougo pulls out his own smartphone, heading into the browser. “I bookmarked the site for the restaurant Kenzaki-san’s sorta-niece works at, hang on.” He pulls up the page. "Here, the Jacaranda Cafe. She can probably reach him, now, and Hajime. I kinda made them both human. Somehow. Not sure if that's good or not?” Sougo winces.
Kiriya stares. “Me'n the banana are gonna have /so/ much explaining to do. Do you have any idea how overpowered you are, kid?”
“There's also here, Restaurant Agito… Kamen Rider Agito owns that one.”
“Hrmph.” Kaito makes a noise. “A lot of explaining. Hope he was on good terms with Kino.”
Sougo looks at them, decides that either he’ll find out later, or that he probably doesn't want to know, and continues. “I’ve also got the numbers for Todoroki, and Gatack – although he might be Kabuto, now? It was a little weird… There's also this one dry cleaning place, where Faiz works-”
There's a loud sputtering sound from another side of the group. “Takumi is alive?!”
“Is he not supposed to be?”
Shinnosuke groans. “He's really not. There's a number of reasons I wasn't thrilled with your time-travel deal, Sougo.”
“Least he's got a better grip on the time thing than I do. His meddling actually works.” Kouta mumbles.
––––
(This one’s a different version of events, and I’m not sure when I wrote it anymore.)
“You look down, kid.”
Sougo looks up, as a man in a fedora leans against the tree next to him.
“You realize you did a damn good job, right? There’s zero grudges here.”
“That’s what everyone keeps telling me… but it’s not right… it’s not my celebration to get into.” Sougo squints. “Sorry, I don’t recognize you at all.”
“Hidari Shotaro, one half of Kamen Rider Double. The Joker half, specifically, since I heard your form only goes into our first.” He grins. “Sorry we couldn’t make it there in person. Your friend in the scarf kinda messed with Philip by going into the library when he wasn’t supposed to. We only got it together in time for that battle.”
Grimacing, Sougo flinches back. “Sorry. Woz basically did whatever he wanted back then, he was a bit… er. Cagey. Always was, really, but at least he… well, we worked together more easily, anyway.”
Shotaro lowers his hat to cover his face. “I heard mention that your friends went back to their time, is that right?”
“Yeah… but… their time was the one where I became overlord, and since we’ve stopped that from happening… I…” Sniffing, Sougo looks down. “I don’t even know if they exist anymore. Tsukuyomi, Geiz, and Woz are the first real friends I have ever had, and for all I know, they’ve been written out of the timeline, just – just been erased, like White Woz was when we first used Trinity,” he starts to tremble. “And it’ll be my fault because my being evil was what made it possible for them to exist in the first place, so if I never become evil, then they won’t exist-”
“Hey, hey, come on, calm down.” Shotaro puts a hand on Sougo’s shoulder. "You're gonna get dehydrated or something if you keep having crying fits, and then Emu’s gonna get on all our heads for letting that happen.” He gives a brief squeeze before letting go. “I’m not saying not to be upset, or to not worry or miss your friends. But breaking down… doesn’t help. Believe me, I get it. I’ve been there – Philip was ‘gone’ for a year, when all was said and done, and I… well, if he hadn’t been restored when he was, I probably wouldn’t have been even semi-functional for very much longer.” He sighs. “So, I’m not saying to forget, but don’t let it consume you. Things here turned out fine. You just have to have faith that they’ll turn up again. Hopefully sooner, rather than later. You’ll have a hard time beating out the record for longest wait – that’s Eiji and Ankh, at 9 years, followed by Gou and Chase at 5, Philip and myself at 1, Emu with Poppy and Parad at a month, and Gentaro and Kengo at about a week.”
“So… here's hoping for second or third, then?”
“Now you’re getting it. Gotta warn ya, the humor gets a little dark around here sometimes. It’s a coping mechanism. Just let someone know if that gets to be too much for you, at any point. Doesn’t matter if it was fine at a previous meeting. If it gets hard, we want to know, so we can help.”
Sougo rubs at his eye with his fist. “Still can’t believe you guys plan to invite me back…”
Shinnosuke sits down on his other side. “It’s an open invitation. Nobody’s required to come, but just so that you know, that invitation will never close, and neither do the communication lines. If you need time away, we get it. But… I’m not going to lie, that sounds like it’s a bad idea for you. Not talking, that is.”
“I’ve… I’ve had enough of being alone for one timeline. It was just me and my uncle for so long… and then they came barging in, and now they’re gone again…”
Shin: “Can you tell us about your uncle? Takeru’s the only one here whose met him, and only briefly.”
That gets Sougo to give a small smile. “Yeah, that… sure was a day. So, Takeru-san… is not a good liar, is he?”
““Not really, no.””
“He did seem like he got what I was dealing with way too much to not remember. But my uncle… he’s great. He took me in after my parents died, and he’s been the one constant since then. He fixes clocks for a living. Or, well, he fixes everything, really, but he prefers clocks. He even managed to fix a train one time.”
““The den-liner?””
“…Okay, yes, it's a time traveling train, and that was a really weird day, but still. Train. Though, gotta be honest, if he wasn’t fixing clocks? He’d be a really good chef. His first instinct whenever a rider came by was to make them something to eat.” His face darkens as he looks across the way. “Though the meal wasn't always intended for them…”
Shinnosuke follows his line of sight. “…What did Tsukasa do?”
“He stole my dinner. The first time I saw him out of suit, he stole. My dinner. When I had literally been a ghost all day.”
They both wince. Shotaro laughs nervously, adding “That’s a pretty good reason to hold a grudge against Kadoya. But your uncle’s a good repairman and cook?”
“Yeah! Yeah, he is! I mean, Agito-san said he could be professional, and he is a professional chef, so-”
“Wait!” Shotaro holds up a hand. “Agito?”
“Yeah.”
“Kamen Rider Agito?”
“Yeah.”
“Sougo, new question for you.” Shinnosuke looks at him, serious. “How many riders did you meet that aren’t here?”
“A lot of them. Why?”
“Do you have anyone’s contact information? This group isn’t supposed to just be the 2010s, it’s that we’re the ones who Emu was able to get in contact with.”
Shotaro puts his belt on. “Philip? Do you mind sending Emu over here?”
––––
(This one’s from August 22, before I remembered I should probably just wait until after the finale actually came out.)
“Sougo-kun?”
“Hm?”
“Are you feeling alright? You've barely touched your dinner.”
Sougo blinks, looking down at his plate. “…Oh. sorry. Your cooking deserves way better than that. I was just… distracted.”
His uncle sits down beside him. “You miss them, don't you?”
It's hard, he’d never admitted to being lonely to his uncle before, not in so many words, but now…
Now 9-to-5 feels so empty.
“Yeah. I do.” His vision blurs, just a little, before he blinks and it goes back to normal… or not, because he can feel something warm on his cheek. He's crying.
“Sougo…” Uncle pulls him into a one armed hug. It's nice. They've never really been this touchy-feely before, it always felt odd, but… they both need this. Now that Geiz, Tsukuyomi and Woz are… are gone. Are in their time, hopefully, because they were only ever supposed to be here until they were finished.
Until he was stopped.
But they were friends, and his uncle liked them, and they were always around…
Sougo had hoped that all of them – Geiz, Tsukuyomi, Woz, and his uncle – that they’d all be able to keep each other company after he was… gone. He wasn't supposed to make it back here, and they were, but they didn't. They got pulled back to the future (he hopes), and he didn't die like he was intended to, and now he doesn't know what to do with himself.
At least he's being given the time to decide.
Heh. Time. That didn't matter, for almost a year. He could, technically, go any when he wanted. He didn't, because that would have been an abuse of power, but he could.
But now there's no time mazines, no another riders, no riders at all, save for him.
He doesn't even know if the few watches he has still work.
Grand… he refuses to try. Doesn't want to risk it.
Trinity… same. If he finds out that it does work, if he pulls them to him through time and space again… that'd be awful, because he'd have to say goodbye all over again when the transformation ends. If it doesn't… then they're gone.
Zi-O II was always… touchy. It's powerful, but also he always felt odd using it – the future sight felt wrong, somehow.
So the only two watches he would dare try are Zi-O and the bike, and he hasn't touched them, save to keep them in his pockets, since the battle ended.
He keeps them with him, just in case.
Just in case.
The front door chimes, and uncle looks at him, concerned,
Shaking his head, Sougo gives a small smile. “Go on ahead. You've got a customer, maybe you'll even get a clock to fix this time, too.”
Uncle gives him a pat on the shoulder, and heads out front.
Sougo can't hear what they're saying, not really, but his uncle sounds… surprised, honestly. Like he didn't expect whoever it is. They must have actually had a clock.
About 10 minutes pass, with the indistinct voices from out front talking all the while, and Sougo's mind wanders.
––––
Sougo had told his uncle about being a Kamen Rider before he'd left… and then one and two made three, and he'd asked, when it was over, if Geiz and Woz were Kamen Riders too. He’d had to say yes, couldn't bring himself to lie and hide it. He'd also added that Tsukuyomi became a Rider, too, on that last day.
When he was asked if they survived… Sougo said they'd gone back to their time.
(He hopes they made it to a better one than they left.)
(Please.)
A week later, four and sixteen made twenty, and Uncle’d asked if the people who they'd brought through were Kamen Riders as well.
“…They were. Once upon a timeline.” Sougo smiled bitterly. “Until I became one. Then their pasts and powers all got stolen, and now half of the Kamen Riders never were in the first place, and the rest never can be again. All the watches, on that stand? Those were their powers, before I came along.” He tried to hold back the tears with a smile. “Some hero I was. Had to erase almost twenty years worth of other, better, heroes to be one.”
His uncle didn't have a reply for that. He just hugged him.
–––
They've been talking for a while, out there. Maybe it's a different clocksmith? There aren't any others in the area, as far as Sougo knows, since it's not exactly a big profession…  oh well.
“Sougo-kun?” His uncle steps into the doorway. “You'd said that some of the other Kamen Riders didn't remember being such, right?”
Sougo looks away. “Yeah. Pretty much everyone I met before January, except for Kadoya Tsukasa. Most of them never came here.”
“One did, though, and he seems very intent on talking to you.”
“…Huh?” That gets him to look up. Why would- before January, they wouldn't remember being riders, and probably shouldn't remember he exists, much less remember having met him. “Did he say his name?”
“Ten… something.” Uncle grimaces. “Sorry, I'm bad with names, it's already slipped my mind…”
“Ten... Tenkuji, you mean? Tenkuji Takeru?”
Uncle beams. “That's it!”
He hadn't remembered. Couldn't have remembered, it was before the paradoxes started piling on top of each other so badly… Except…
When Tsukuyomi had taken off, for a while, she'd left her data pad, the one with the histories on it. Sougo'd copied them all down, each and every one. Even if they didn't remember, someone needed to.
He filled three notebooks with every detail he could, and then with what he'd done.
Miharu and Geiz had thought it was a terrible idea, but… someone needed to remember for them.
Tenkuji-sempai had been 'Kamen Rider Ghost'. He'd been 'Ghost' for a reason, and he'd seemed a little too familiar with what happened to Sougo that day.
Sougo goes to the storefront.
There he is, brown hair and a kimono hoodie, grinning nervously. “Hey, kouhai. Long time, no see.”
…Kouhai. Okay, yeah, he's older than Sougo, but.
What?!
“I, uh. hi. Yeah… that is…”
Tenkuji's grin loses a little of it's nervousness, and he looks like he's trying for reassurance. “We know. We all know. We're sorry, we had to let you think we forgot, because… ugh, something about cause and effect, and predetermined events and, honestly, Ryotaro and Yuuto's explanations went way over my head, and Tsukasa's weren't much better. But we never forgot, okay?”
“You – you remember. All of it?”
“We've always been Kamen Riders, and we always will be.” Takeru's smile is warm. “And we'd like to invite you to a thing.”
Uncle butts in. “So, you are one of them?”
Takeru nods, bowing formally for a proper introduction. “Tenkuji Takeru, Kamen Rider Ghost. I was mostly active from 2015 to 2016, and now it's whenever my juniors need help.” He smiles. “Nice to meet you again!”
“You said you wanted Sougo to come to something?”
“Mm-hm. We've started having gatherings, about a year and a half ago, now, and we'd appreciate it if you could come.” He says the last part to Sougo, before turning to both of them. “It's mostly riders and support, and families, too. But… it can get a little overwhelming, and we thought it'd be a better idea if you, er, Mr. Tokiwa, that is, would be willing to wait until the next one? If Sougo comes back – there's no obligation to, of course, but we'd at least like to fill him in, first.”
Uncle grins. “I'd love to.” He makes little shooing motions at Sougo and Takeru. “Go, have fun, stay safe. You know how I worry.”
Swallowing hard, Sougo nods. “Yeah. Yeah, I do.”
––––
“D'you still have your bike? Because you can ride along on mine if you need to, but it'll be easier if you have your own. The Ghostriker isn't really… made for two people.”
Sougo looks up and down the spectral-themed bike. “I'd say so. You really went all out with the theming, huh?”
“Well, it used to be possessed by a horse spirit, I think, whenever I transformed, but I had it modified a year ago to always look like this. If the eyes glow, it's haunted. Fair warning.”
“That's really cool. I've still got what was my bike, but… I don't know if it still works.” Sougo pulls out the watch, looking down at it. “Never really used it much, honestly. Mostly used the time machines to get places. That kinda felt like cheating when it wasn't that far away, but since we'd have to time travel half the time anyway…” He hesitates. “I haven't tried using it since we finished. I don't know if I can transform, anymore, either. Does that disqualify me?”
“Heck no. A lot of people don't, not if they can help it, or can't for one reason or another. So, don't worry about it.”
Nodding, Sougo turns the faceplate on the watch, and it springs to action. He grins at seeing it again, and then his face falls. …I don't actually have a helmet.”
Takeru breaks out laughing. “You were always Zi-O when you used it, huh? Here.” He tosses a second helmet to Sougo. “Didn't know if you had a bike or not, so I grabbed an extra before I left.”

I know it’s late but  I wanna talk about Zi-O
As a series, Zi-O bothers me a lot. I don’t hate it, i don’t want to hate it, but the writing is so lazy and messy that i kept rolling my eyes at every episode.
the characters are great, but the chemistry between each characters are weak and Tsukuyomi only rubs me off as a plot device, since i don’t understand her as Sougo’s friend. and if Sougo’s and Geiz’s friendship can reflect from Sento’s and Banjou’s friendship then the series would turn into something way better
the good thing about Zi-O is Okuno Sou’s acting. damn that kid can act. he didn’t just potray a happy-go-luck high school teen, but it feels like Okuno is genuinely excited to be in a kamen rider series. i could see him smile from ear to ear and i know that ain’t just plain acting.
and I really hate how they made cool futureing riders and just use them for Woz’s upgrade and then threw them away just like that. I mean, Douon Mondo reminded me a lot of Kiriya and I love those kind of cool and sassy character. And Kamen Rider Quiz was awesome, even before I watched Zi-O, i saw a screen cap of him and quickly fell in love with the design (which i later found out that his suit is just a reuse from Ex-Aid rider player suits). AND KIKAI IS SUCH A SWEETIE WHY WOULD THEY THREW HIM OUT LIKE THAT. I never knew friendly robots are my thing. But to give it justice, they did make spin-offs for the futuring riders, so that’s that.
And don’t get me started with the villains. SWARTZ IS FUCKING JERK. he’s not evil, he’s just a big spoiled jerk. what? he wants to be king so he could save his world? OK FINE. but then found out that his little sister is stronger than him so he needs to take her memories away? THAT’S IMMATURE MAN. no one likes an immature villain, it goes off as annoying than evil. i’m kind of ok with Heure (is that how it’s spelled?) and Ora, as people who are forced to work together, their relationship is fine and their characters are written pretty well.
gotta be honest the best character in Zi-O is probably Tsukasa. I haven’t watched Decade, but before I knew him enough i already thought that this guy was annoying as fuck, but then I watched Zi-O some more and i started to like him, because he was such an interesting and mysterious character that does whatever the fuck he wants. and Daiki was a perfect companion for him. the Decade in Zi-O actually defines the “Passing by Rider” better than the original series.
Overall, the show was entertaining to watch but also irritating at the same time. I want to see Okuno Sou in other movies or dramas because I see potential in him. If it wasn’t for the legendary riders’ cameo the show would flunk hard.

Original work [SH- Cut]
I’m working through the first draft of a fantasy novel but the story has changed pretty drastically since so I’m cutting this whole chunk. I thought it was pretty exciting but it has no place in my novel so I figured I might as well share it before it’s lost forever.
Summary: During an eclipse, the citizens turn on their leaders. Oz, who has been tasked with protecting the young lord of the citadel, calmly assesses the situation.
“It’s a mirror system,” Needle explains, in Lihese, for the benefit of his brother who is almost certainly about to start screaming for attention. “The crystals aren’t shining bright enough to last out the storm, let alone the eclipse. We could be down here for days.” He interrupts himself with a fit of coughing. Cece hands him a skin of water. “It’s okay,” Needle says. “I’m just tired.” The flesh under his eyes are dark and swollen while his cheeks are sunken, a punishment for taking on all this responsibility.
“The mirror system relies on a series of silvered glass set up around the Under,” Needle explains. “Ray designed it. But we need to be able to put it up.” He erupts into a fit of coughing again.
“You’re burning up,” Cece says, trying not to let any harshness creep into her tone. “You need to rest.” She manhandles him into the small cot they have set up in their space. Every evacuee gets an allocated lot. The four of them have been granted one in the centre, under the greatest amount of light. Around them are muffled murmurs of the citizens, their voices hushed by trepidation.
“I’m ok, I can still help,” Needle protests weakly, but Cece’s firm hand keeps him in the cot.
“Ouou,” Cece says, fixing burning red eyes on Oz. “You need to help Ray.”
Oz doesn’t even bother to summon the energy to be surprised. “What do you need,” he barks.
“Um, the plans are almost done. All we need to do is set up the mirrors.” He unrolls the map of the Under. It’s the parchment he took from his father’s study. The only one in existence but it hardly matters since Oz knows this place like the back of his hand. How many times has he patrolled this damn place? The layout is uneven, it being a natural cave and all, but he knows every rock and bump.
Ray hands him a stack of mirrors. “Can you, uh,” he starts. “Put them up?”
“Bit by backbreaking bit.”
The next hour or so is spent swinging back and forth the Under, climbing up to fix the mirrors into place, jamming them into the rocks until the angle is just right. By the time the mirrors are up, Needle has rested enough to continue planning with his brother.
“Ridiculous, don’t you think?” Oz mutters to Cece in Tieyen as the two brothers pore over their parchments.
“What?”
“That I just put up a bunch of glass all over the place. I mean we’re in a room full of Liangers.”
“No one is ready for this eclipse!” Cece hisses back.”No one is properly rested, people are dead!” That would explain the weeping. “And they need to conserve their energy,” Cece says, shaking her head.
Oz is silent. He watches the two brothers prepare a container for a light ball and face it towards the first mirror. The light beams out like an arrow and bounces off the first, and then second mirror, but it misses the third by a hairsbreadth. Everyone looks at Oz.
“Goddammit.”
Climbing up a second time, he notices other things. People complaining, they start to wander towards the main shelter. When he rejoins the others, Cece has already taken charge. She steps towards the citizens, eyes burning bright. “We protect you. But we protect them first.”
Oz lifts a shoulder. “She says it because I can’t.”
Liz the Tanner adjusts her stance. “You would fight us?”
“You’re disturbing the peace,” Oz explains, throwing a small dagger into the air. It flips a few times before he catches it by the handle, its sharp blade pointed menacingly towards the crowd.
“What peace? This pit isn't peaceful,” she spits. “The citadel isn't at peace, the kingdom isn't even at peace. We’re less than a decade from the war and we’re all holding our breath in case the flame goes out.” Oz casts a glance at the crystals hanging above. They’re less bright than the glowing fury of the mob of Lumierians before them. “The reason why the shield wasn’t ready-”
“Ouou…” Cece mutters in warning. Oz pretends not to hear her, he hasn’t changed his stance.
“Ou Zi!” Cece hisses. She can tell. Of course she can, she’s watched him before. Opposite her or from a distance she can smell the danger. Or maybe just the tang of her own fear.
Oz surmises that Ray has lost control of the situation and by the looks of the citizens’ raised weapons, they agree. They’re long past the point of excuses. This is three years of uncertainty and two particularly long hard weeks of which to stew the grudges, doubt and hatred.
“You had your chance, Ray.” Liz says, raising her hand. She uses her magic to refine metal and armour. Oz has espied her at work when she came to the castle to carry out more finicky projects for the family. Her focus is absolute, like needlepoint. He’s seen her carve leather, metal and even stab a cow through the heart with light at point-blank.
But she’s got nothing on a moving target. Liz’s fingers start to glow and out of the corner of his eye, Oz sees the fluttering of a brown cape as Cece’s arm rises to stop him.
“Mother!” A young girl rushes to the front of the fray and grabs Liz by the arm. “Stop this!”
“Lily! Get off me!”
Oz recognises the girl from Ray’s court. One of the tittering scholars who gazes at him with starry eyes. “Earl Ray is doing his best!”
“Be quiet, Lilly.” Liz, her mother’s eyes are hard, a cold greyish-yellow like a star that’s burned itself down, worn thin over the years. (‘Do your people shine?’ Lady Sana asks. ‘Do they, Oz?’)
“No,” Lilly Tanner responds high and petulant. “What do you have against Ray? He’s doing his best.”
“Lilly! Have you forgotten? Your brother who was supposed to return months ago?” She looks from Lilly to Ray.
Ray’s face blanches.
“That wasn't Ray’s fault! It isn’t his fault the Duke hasn’t returned. Or…” she drops her voice and looks sulkily away. “Anyone.”
“This is your brother, Lilly. Your own flesh and blood and instead of them, you are defending a family of murderers-”
“And if he hadn't returned that's on him, he always forgets where he is. He didn't even want to take over the business, he just wanted to find father. If it wasn't for the summons-”
A resounding slap and Lilly fell away, clutching her cheek. Liz dropped her hand. “He would still be with us. Hold your tongue. You embarrass me.”
Oz allowed a sneer to cross his face. “Civil unrest, even dividing families, what mischief you get up to Ray.”
“I...I can fix this,” Ray continues to mumble over and over again. Ray’s face contorts which betrays his unease. Oz thinks he’ll lose his nerve. It’s too late. Then Ray opens his mouth and proves him right. “Citizens of Sereto, I speak on behalf of Duke Lamiere.” Ray’s voice is trembling but his fists are clenched by his side. “We ask for your patience, we are doing the best that we can.”
There’s a pause and Ray’s shoulders dip. Oz stares unblinkingly at the crowd.
A cry rings out. “Is that the best you can do?”
“We are in the process of restoring the light until the eclipse ends. There is ample food and medicine in the centre. We have rationed enough for a few days, but please be courteous or swift action will be taken against you.” Ray tries to get Oz to meet his eyes.
“You call that courteous?” Shouts the same busybody from the back. This time, Oz spots him. He’s a vendor at the market, sells imported goods, of which imports only come once a year. They used to come every few months. But if he’s worried about making money he shouldn’t have come to this citadel. If he was brought here against his will or perhaps misled like many others, Oz could have sympathised, but it’s not often he gets to follow up on a threat, so he strikes. A dagger leaves his fingers and whips through the crowd, embedding itself in a scaffold next to the naysayer who almost wets himself.
“Ozul!” Ray shouts in alarm.
“What, I followed orders, that’s what I’m supposed to do, right?”
“That’s right, we can’t blame the dog for who its owner tells it to bite,” Liz says offishly.
Oz spins round, “I resent that. I prefer not to bite, lots of things taste bad.”
Liz cracks her knuckles. “Easily fixed when we remove your teeth.”

“Rider Rewrites: Build” + Theories about the Future of Build’s Story
Fuuuuuuck me, it’s been literally years since I’ve done Rider Rewrites. In fact, so long that I only ever made one Rider Rewrites, and that was for Ghost, a season that a lot of people have problems with (like the main character, though like I said in it, I actually enjoyed Ghost). So for a while I was thinking “I’ve been free from college for a while, so why not try doing Rider Rewrites again?” and here we are. I’m gonna do Build, since it DID recently finish, and I’ve already gotten a few ideas about what I’d change with it. This is also gonna have my opinions about the final episode in general (since it seems like there are quite a number of people who didn’t like it), and also my theories about where Build’s story will take them, primarily with the Zi-O crossover movie (since I’m sure what I’ll theorize with the Build arc in the TV series proper will be debunked fast) and Build NEW WORLD.
So since it’s been a long while since I’ve done a Rider Rewrites, I feel like I should restate my criteria as well as add some new ones:
- I’m only doing KR seasons that I’ve personally watched to the end, which are Kuuga, Ryuki, Blade, Den-O, Kiva, and all of the Phase 2 Heisei Riders. - No requests, I’m only doing this ‘cuz I feel like it. - Again no actual schedule, but this time I’m hoping to do at least a few more after this. - This is heavily opinion based, so there are definitely gonna be disagreements with what I’d do. I’m fine with different ideas and opinions, just as long as you respect mine as well. - This is all written under the premise that I'm a writer with an “infinite” budget, since I understand that with the restrictions that the real staff and cast have (such as cost of effects, timing, and having to edit things to fit a standard-length episode), they likely wouldn’t be able to do it. - My changes are likely not going to be in chronological order, it’ll probably be all over the place in terms of thinking. - I’m doing this without any knowledge about Kamen Rider Build: Be the One, so any changes that I’d make that are answered in the movie, I’ll take back. This will likely be the same for any future Rider Rewrites, since I’m intending to do these immediately after the TV series itself has finished, as it’s typically where my ideas for changes is the freshest.
With that out of the way, let’s get down to it.
SUMMARY:
The setting; 10 years ago, a space mission to Mars brought back a mysterious item dubbed the Pandora Box. Amidst the celebration of finding such an item, a mysterious man interrupts the ceremony by touching the alien artifact, which activates it and creates a giant wall known as the Skywall that emits a red glow, and divided the country of Japan into three new ones, Touto, Hokuto, and Seito. The light that was emitted from the Pandora Box’s activation affected the minds of those present there, namely Gentoku Himuro, who was there in place of his father, future Touto Prime Minister Taizan Himuro, who couldn’t make it, future Hokuto Prime Minister Yoshiko Tajimi, and future Seito Prime Minister Masakuni Mido. Their minds were affected by turning them into war-thirsty people who sought to use the power of the Pandora Box to their desires, and it was only by Taizan Himuro’s intervention that the Pandora Box was kept out of everyone’s hands. But in the background, a mysterious organization known as Faust begins to act, desiring to take the Pandora Box for itself.
Build follows the amnesiac genius physicist and scientist Sento Kiryu, the titular Kamen Rider Build, who seeks to find out his true identity, as well as convicted murder and former MMA fighter Ryuga Banjou, who transforms into Kamen Rider Cross-Z. They are aided by Soichi Isurugi, a mysterious man who runs the cafe nascita and acts as support by providing information in the lab underneath the cafe, his daughter Misora, who uses her connections as the internet idol Mii-tan to get information as well as being the one responsible for purifying the Fullbottles, which are necessary for Sento and Ryuga to transform with, and Sawa Takigawa, a reporter who’s in need of a big scoop, who also uses her connections to provide information to the Riders. Together, the nascita team fights against Faust and their leaders, Night Rogue, a malevolent man with the powers of the Bat Fullbottle, and Blood Stalk, his lackadaisical second-in-command who has his own plans and intentions. But underneath it all, things are much more complicated than it seems....
MY OVERALL OPINION:
I love Kamen Rider Build. It’s easily one of my favorite KR seasons I’ve ever seen. it’s not perfect, I can acknowledge that. Hell, if it were, I’d probably wouldn’t even be doing this Rider Rewrites for it. But that doesn’t change how I feel about it. I really enjoyed the characters, the plot, the designs, everything about it. But with that said, let’s get into
WHAT I’D CHANGE:
- First off, I think what I’d change is the introductory scene for the Hokuto Three Crows and Kamen Rider Grease. While it wasn’t bad, per se, it did come to my attention some time ago that in that introductory scene, Akaba uses a laser to destroy several buildings (probably killing a bunch of innocent bystanders while doing it) because he was getting bored waiting for Kazumi to join them. Which severely clashes with how we’re supposed to feel bad when he dies fighting against Gentoku as Kamen Rider Rogue. Instead of having Akaba lasering those buildings, I’d have the scene be that Kiba and Aoba are watching their tablet, and they turn around to face Akaba as the Castle Hard Smash, punching away at a Guardian he destroyed before using his laser on it (significantly weaker than what we see in the show, the trade-off being that he can use it more often as an attack now, since he barely used it in the first place). Kiba would chide Akaba about disobeying Kazumi (since I’m also imagining that the beam would damage another building (just not as much as in the original scene), but it would zoom out to show that Kiba is sitting on a Guardian he destroyed, and Aoba had planted a foot on one he did. Akaba would then detransform, revealing that he was different from a regular Smash, and would call out to Kazumi, it playing out much like in the original scene, where we see him having broken through the Skywall as Kamen Rider Grease and having destroyed the Touto Guardians. I feel like this change would help make the Hokuto Three Crows more earning of sympathy, since Akaba wouldn’t have just unnecessarily caused large-scale devastation. - For that matter, give some more time to the Hokuto Three Crows, since we barely know them outside of their relation to Kazumi. Aoba suffers this the most, since he dies first and very early on. According to Kazumi, he was a person who really cared about his friends, and would even cry for a complete stranger. I would like to actually see that, like give Aoba a scene where after he had fought a couple of Guardians (or the Riders), he sees a civilian scared to death of him, and tells them to go, that he’s not there to hurt them. Make him the most like Kazumi in that regard, so that his death stings him and the other two all the more. - Related to giving characters more screentime, do the same with the Washio Brothers. As they were in the series, they were just to be the “sidekicks” to Gentoku while he was on Seito’s and Nanba’s side and little else. For Fu, I’d like to emphasize his relationship with Rai a lot more. Make it that while he’s loyal to Nanba, Rai is the person he cares just a little more about. For instance, have it that when Rai goes back after losing to Kazumi in the Touto-Seito battle, Fu tells him that he’ll take care of things in a genuine tone, and do a brotherly handshake of sorts with him (which would be when Rai hands him his Gear Engine to let him transform into Hell Bro’s). And have it that whenever Rai’s down, Fu is always concerned for him before Rai insists on him finishing the job and tossing his Gear Engine to him. For Rai, I’d emphasize his prideful nature and loyalty to Nanba a lot more. Like, make it being a Nanba Child is a badge of honor for him, especially since he was the one chosen to be the Engine Bro’s. Have it so that in a lot of the fights we have with him, he’s talking down against his opponents about how inferior they are to him because he’s a Nanba Child and they’re not, and that with each fight that he loses, he becomes increasingly desperate to show that he’s superior to the point when he and Fu are offered to take the Nebula Gas infusion before their fight with Evolt, that he’s readily accepts it and pressures Fu to do the same (who I’d imagine would be just a liiiiiiittle apprehensive, but not too much as to not do it since he’s that loyal to Nanba as well), and that he has an even bigger breakdown about Evol being that much stronger than them, even after that Nebula Gas infusion. But still have Rai going down swearing his allegiance to Nanba, but this time as a way to comfort himself about the fact that not only is he not as strong as he thought he was, but that he’s now dying in front of his brother. Also, I think there could’ve been more of an effort to give the Washio Brothers more interactions with each of the characters, since they really don’t have any sort of significant relationship to any of the characters, even to Utsumi and Sawa, both of whom are also Nanba Children with them. - Show Sawa doing her espionage and information gathering. As funny as the “It’s better that you don’t know” gag is for me, I do understand the frustration some people have about her being this incredible character, yet we rarely ever see her doing her thing. Personally, the lack of her actions I chalk it up to the fact that doing unsuited stunts is that it’s time-consuming to teach actors who don’t have any experience with doing their own stunts, that using unsuited stunt doubles is harder to do since you have to match their physique to the actor’s/actress’s, and that it’s altogether too much money and too much of a risk that could injure them. For the purposes of Rider Rewrites, we’ll be ignoring that. Let’s see Sawa take down a bodyguard in front of a doctor who has access to Banjou’s medical records, let’s see Sawa sneak around to get information, just show her doing more things.          - On a related/off-topic side note, I don’t really necessarily think that just giving her the role of like, another Rider or a Rider-like user is really conducive to her character. Like I understand the want for more female Kamen Riders/Rider-like characters, but I personally don’t see it as something entirely necessary. Honestly, in my opinion it kinda makes it feel like the female characters are only useful if they can transform and fight alongside male Riders, and that’s sorta more disrespectful, since we have just as many non-Kamen Rider/Rider-like male characters. Though admittedly with Build, there were none of those. Plus, if it’s on the basis that “we need more female representation in Kamen Rider”, I feel like Magical Girl shows like Pretty Cure kinda fill a similar niche. - Give Utsumi more of a personality other than just being a blind follower of whoever’s the main villain at the moment. Like show more of his inventive side, but have Nanba and Blood Stalk/Evolt dismiss his original inventions and praise the ones that he’s copied, and show his frustrations with that more, but that it’s not enough to break his loyalty to Nanba. Also do more hints about his nature as a cyborg, since that’s one of the few things I feel like genuinely comes out of nowhere in Build besides a few jokes about him being one. Like have Blood Stalk/Evol make fun of him for thinking so much like a computer, or have Utsumi move around a little unnaturally at some points (mainly whenever he’s transformed into Night Rogue or MadRogue). - On the topic of Vernage, I don’t really have a problem with how she’s used, especially within the context of the series, since she’s on a time-limit that grows shorter each time her powers are used. People seem to think that she’s done nothing, but remember, without her emptying the Touto Fullbottles and her defeating Evolt so many years ago, we wouldn’t have a story. - I don’t necessarily have a problem with Sento as a character, but as a Rider, I feel like we should’ve gotten him to use more of his Forms, especially since we’ve established early on that he likes to use different Best Matches and Trial Forms to his advantage. Like, let’s see more of his Best Matches with the Fullbottles we rarely see, even if it’s only used once in the series. Let’s see him use Best Matches like BeetleCamera, or DogMic, or TurtleWatch, or UniRaser, any of them. It’s a shame that later on he mainly relies on RabbitRabbit, TankTank, and Genius Form. Speaking of which, let’s see Genius Form use more of the Fullbottle powers. We see Sento use the Diamond Fullbottle’s powers to defend himself against Evolt’s attack in one episode, so I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t use the other Fullbottle powers as well. - Related to the lack of Form usages later on in the series, we can also circumvent this by just using the Fullbottle finishers of weapons that can use them, like the Drill Crusher, the Beat Closer, the Twin Breaker, the Transteam/Nebulasteam Guns, the Knuckles, and the Fullbottle Buster. Like let’s see the effects of using those Fullbottles have on the weapons, as well as use them more for Charge/Discharge Crushes. - For Ryuga, I’d say that I’d like to see him use the basic Cross-Z suit for a little longer before upgrading into Cross-Z Charge, since it didn’t get to really shine, even after he had to go back to the Build Driver, since he almost immediately gets Cross-Z Magma. Same deal with Great Cross-Z, since it’s a fantastic repaint of basic Cross-Z, though I don’t mind its lack of usage as much as I do with basic Cross-Z. As a character, I don’t have any problems with him. In fact, he’s easily become one of my favorite secondary Riders, and I’m absolutely excited that he’s getting his own V-Cinema next year. He deserves it. - If there’s anything related to Ryuga I would change, I would add more new scenes of him and Kasumi to make it so that we feel a bigger connection between them. Like I love how he still thinks about her even after the 2/3rd point of the series, but it’s always of the same scene. Like, show me more scenes of them together so I can feel like it’s a real relationship. - Kazumi’s character I feel like was fine, but I would definitely tone down his fanboy tendencies at some points, since it was a little over-the-top. I wouldn’t get rid of them, just tone them down a little bit. I’d also wouldn’t give him a new form before Grease Blizzard, since I feel like the impact of Grease Blizzard is because it’s a new form and that it was dangerous thanks to the multiple Nebula Gas infusions he took. Maybe instead of a second Twin Breaker and the Dragon Sclashjelly, he gets a new weapon first, like maybe his own Beat Closer (which is one of my favorite Rider weapons that sadly doesn’t get used often). Hell, call it the “Beat Greaser” and give it new sounds and a paint job and make it a Web Exclusive toy. Bandai loves doing that. - Gentoku’s also fine. At first I felt like I’d have the most problems with him when he was revealed to have a redeeming arc, but after all was said and done, I think it worked for him. Like the nascita team didn’t immediately accept him joining them like I worried about (since he did kill Akaba and was in general partially responsible for the terrible things that happened to each of the characters), and he truly does earn his place with them instead of it being “Oh, I guess we all immediately forgive you for your transgressions.” - Blood Stalk/Evol as a villain is fantastic. He’s got charm, he’s got power, he’s got some of the coolest Kamen Rider designs I’ve ever seen. My biggest problem is his somewhat simple motivation of getting stronger because he’s supposed to be the “superior being”. Like I’m sure in “Be the One” they reveal more of his motivation and background since members of his race also make an appearance, but for now, I’m mainly just going off on the TV series since I have yet to watch the movie. Personally, I would give Evolt a bigger backstory. Like I would make it so that Evolt had been a high-ranking soldier of his race that was entrusted with the Evol-Driver (something that he named himself because he’s egotistical) and the Pandora Box in order to fight a war against another planet. But after that, he became enraptured with the powers that the technology gave him on top of his own that he ends up going off on his own to become stronger and stronger, as well as becoming smarter and smarter with how he handled things. This would eventually lead him to Mars, where he meets his match against Vernage. But as he is, he works as a fantastic villain. - Overall, I think I’d give the series more breathing space to allow it to expand and explore everything, And with that all said and done, I’ll talk about my thoughts on the final episodes.
Honestly, it’s how I expected it to go, and I’m pretty satisfied with it. I’ve seen some people express dissatisfaction with it, and it’s understandable. But with the fact that their plan involved combining two Earths to create one new Earth, it’s hard to not imagine it going that way. Like, if the Earth’s combined and everyone was alive and had their memories of the previous universe, then what was the point of the tension and drama? Likewise, if the Earth’s combined and everyone that died stay dead, then what was the point of combining them? Personally, the Earth’s combining and everyone’s alive but without the memories of the previous universe is the better outcome, because it shows us how the world is without Evolt and the Pandora Box, and makes us wonder where Sento and Ryuga will go on from there. Speaking of which, I have a couple ideas of how the nascita team will reunite and regain their previous memories. I’m willing to bet that in either Zi-O’s and Build’s crossover movie or Build NEW WORLD, that they’ll all coincidentally meet at the nascita cafe, where they start wondering if they all know each other since each of them feels like the other is familiar, before being pulled into the movie’s plot. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t, but I’m hoping it does.

Zi-O 29-30: Blade spoilers within (from someone who has NOT watched Blade)
Ha! Black!Woz walks out of the Storytime vault and into 9-to-5.
White!Woz: Haha sweet I get to choose Another Blade
Swartz: Hey, what do you think of being a person who gets used… you know, hypothetically speaking…
White!Woz: ...ah. Well. Shit.
(We continue this super spoiler-iffic liveblog under the cut. It gets long - this one made it to about 3,000 words. My apologies to mobile users. Just... scroll. Scroll like your life depends on it.)
Awww… the café from Blade has photos from back then on the counter, that’s so sweet. And Amane’s actually wearing the recent necklace for Chalice – that’s a really nice touch there, Toei. Product placement, but it’s a really nice tribute.
Another Blade’s design is – that’s terrifying, that’s a lot of knifes. I like how the spade symbol glows red, and it doesn’t have the ‘handle’ part of a spade. It’s a heart, too. But the thing is… this is the second Another Rider to not have the lens-eyes. Everyone up to Another Zi-O had them, and he notably didn’t.
I know people have been saying they’re proud of Sougo for managing to graduate, and I agree. I really do. I’m happy for our book-dumb protagonist. It’s actually kind of nice to see all four of the ‘team’ together. You know, for certain definitions of ‘team’.
Noting here the Tsukuyomi hasn’t told Sougo that his ‘dream’ was. Not actually a dream, so much as a memory. It makes sense that a small 8-year-old reality warper would take the trauma of something like what Swartz did, and assume the first time he saw it was a nightmare, too.
(Seriously, screw that guy.)
Okay, so, I have not watched Decade, but… from the two (2) films I’ve seen with his cast – WxDecade and the first Hero Taisen movie – this seems to be pretty damned in-character for this Daiki guy. “Lol sup hi just saying hello don’t mind me” *proceeds to steal all your transformation trinkets*
Case in point… Sougo and Geiz don’t notice their personal watches are missing until they go to activate the button on the side. Not when they don’t pull anything out – no, when they go to turn them on. Boys. Boys please.
Also, can I just say that I’m starting to see why people pair Tsukasa and Daiki? I mean, the guy came out in a ~magenta~ apron. And they’re both little shits.
Sougo just shoves Woz in front of them. Woz!Kikai is so OP, oh my god. First the mind control thing when it debuted, the satellite dish lasers in Another Zi-O, and now it has extendable robot arms to grab the watches back. Oh my god.
(Kaito, suddenly copied into another existance as Baron: GFDI just let me be a tree spirit already)
(I know it’s a doppelganger, but seriously. So many Barons. So little patience on his end for people constantly trying to revive him as a pawn.)
Sougo: Okay, so, you guys’s past is my future, and since it’s 2019, anything that happens in 2068 is the future now, so aren’t you talking about things that haven’t happened yet?
Woz: My lord, please, verb tenses get complicated enough without you speaking.
OOF. Yeah, uh, there’s gonna be a. A few problems with Blade ‘2019’. Namely that he isn’t supposed to be in, like. Japan. Ever again. Because Bad Things Happen when he is around fellow Undead. (He made an exception for Gorider, because a certain zombie f*er was stealing his gig, and poorly at that.
((Am I saying that he’s an asshole who is also a zombie, or that he would do a zombie? … Both. I’m saying both.))
Sougo: Okay, so, we need one person who can fight on both ends, and really, if a team is going after Geiz’s watch, it ought to include Geiz, and you guys want me to go after the Another Riders, so of course the groups are me with Tusukyomi, and Geiz with Woz! :) It’s only rational! :) And if you happen to work out whatever’s going on between you, well, that’s just a bonus, isn’t it? :)
Geiz: ...if I kill him, it’s your fault, you know.
Tsukuyomi: This is a terrible idea.
Sougo: I know! :)
(gasp) Dark Toei is giving us the forbidden rebel backstory!
Oh goody Woz was the leader of their team! And he said he was going to ‘infiltrate’ Oma Zi-O’s camp! And everyone died because he seems to have switched sides. Delightful.
White!Woz: Excuse me? I see a pair of powerups here, but not the one I specifically requested you get.
Daiki: Lol you mad?
White!Woz: ...fight us irl bitch.
Daiki: Heh.
Huh… So… when White!Woz’s tablet makes someone do something, they’re supposed to hear his ‘narration’… and maybe that’s a recent idea from the team, but. When it seemed that he was compelling Sougo to come after him – I can’t remember when, it was during either Shinobi or Quiz, but Sougo and Black!Woz were talking in 9-to-5, and he summoned Sougo away, that didn’t happen. Hm.
Sougo: Dang, couldn’t even knock the watch out temporarily. Drat.
Hm. Regulus is showing up in the daytime now… and so is the rest of the constellation. That can’t be good.
Oooh, nifty. Another Blade has the inverted heart for Chalice on her torso, but the spade for Blade on her. Well, blade. As well as a circular saw, which is a bit overkill when you consider the literal knives sticking up from her shoulders.
Oh, hey, remember that theory about how the Another Riders are technically the enemy that each rider fought? Like how Another Gaim opened cracks into the Helheim forest, and Another OOO bled Cell Medals like a Greeed?
And remember why Kenzaki can never return to Japan?
Undead are drawn to fight each other.
Okay, I get why a speed versus speed battle, to counter Woz!Shinobi, would wind up with Diend summoning Accel. But why Birth? Date’s version was never particularly fast – he’s more of a Mighty Glacier. And the suit isn’t really intended for speed, since Gotou was only particularly speedy when he used the Cutter Wing ‘attachment’.
And then I am immediately answered. Bike juggling to get Woz into the air, so that ‘Birth’ can shoot him down without mercy. (Was reminding us of the bike form really necessary? Was it? I don’t think it was. I could have done without seeing that in-action again.)
Diend: Wow, that’s cold, even for me, watching your friend get beat up like that.
Geiz: Bold of you to assume we’re friends. He’s a born liar. I mean, he’s using a ninja form right now.
Geiz: Yeah, no, Woz, screw you. I know you wanted a distraction. Asshole.
Diend: Aw, look, they do like each other.
OH THANK COSMOS it’s Chalice Versus Zi-O. ...for now. There’s about minutes left for everything to go terribly, terribly wrong. (Because Blade.)
And then it immediately went terribly, terribly, wrong.
Kenzaki and Hajime haven’t transformed in years, because they can’t. They would feel each other’s power, seek each other out, and be forced to fight. Probably the only time Blade has reappeared was in a slightly-alternate reality. (shakes fist at Gorider). And Kenzaki looks absolutely terrible. How did you get here so fast, sir? That jacket has clearly seen far better days, is the damage recent?
Some excellent ‘teamwork’ on Geiz and Black!Woz’s parts – using Shinobi’s finisher to get the two targets in one spot for Geiz’s finisher. Clever. Pity that the other two watches aren’t here.
And with that, and some brutal slashes exchanged between Blade and Chalice…
we move to episode 30.
The power-up watches get all electro-staticy, and try to start a chain reaction with White!Woz, but it doesn’t hold up. Hm.
Geiz: What’s your issue?!
Diend: Looking for my boyfriend-rival. No big deal.
Oh man, neither of them want to be in this fight, but they don’t have a choice. Zi-O accidentally knocks Another Blade into the line of fire for Actual Blade’s finisher, so naturally Chalice steps in to try and take the hit.
It doesn’t… technically work. She still gets knocked out of her transformation, back to Amane, and he’s still in his armor.
Kenzaki: oh god oh shit what the hell?! Amane?! what’s going on oh shit
Woz’s storytime vault…
Oh… The Day of Oma is apparently meant for Sougo to stop the end of the world… apparently as brought on by the Battle Fight.
… Rider versus Rider, right? A pair of Riders who can’t coexist, but also can’t not coexist. And yet another who is supposedly erasing all Riders from history. Starting with the primary members of each group. So… if Blade goes, the world goes. If Chalice goes, the world goes. If they both go, Oma Zi-O rises.
“An interesting game, Professor. The only way to win is not to play.”
Zi-O II’s shot in the opening has been replaced by Zi-O Trinity.
Geiz can relate pretty hard to Kenzaki’s resignation to having to fight Hajime, but also to his desperately not wanting to do that thing.
Once again, we have the question of “What is the future you are aiming for?” The question of “And then what?”
Geiz wants to see the one that Sougo – that they will create.
<3
Junichiro: Hey, what are your plans for the new era?
Sougo: ...Uncle, you have no idea how loaded that question is with this group.
(or does he?)
Hey, that camera’s a clue in more ways than one, isn’t it? Another Blade was attacking photo studios, because Hajime’s a photographer. But that camera’s awfully similar to Tsukasas. Who asked you to repair, that, I wonder…?
Yeah, Woz, you’re kind of being a hypocrite here. Criticizing a woman for wanting to reconnect with an old friend/mentor, while unable to get over the urge to lord over having been Geiz’s superior. GEIZ has a point in his anger. WOZ is just being an ass. And Sougo hones directly in on this.
Kid’s got a decent Charisma stat, too.
When Amane picks up the photos, through to when Kenzaki calls for Hajime. That! The Background!
I think that’s a piano ballad version of “Zi-O: King of Time”!
OST when?
And, also, can we get another instance of Future Soldier in-show anytime soon?
Okay, okay, sorry, back to the show.
OH NOOOO.
Firstly, White!Woz summons the two into a fight.
Then he forcibly activates the Another Blade watch inside of Amane.
The transformation has a screen with Another Blade’s face appear and move over her, just like the card that appears when Kenzaki transforms.
Ow, my heart.
OH SHIT RIGHT.
These two episodes have made no effort to hide the green blood that both Kenzaki and Hajime have – from the miscolored bruises to actual bloodstains. And Undead can be ‘sealed’ away – that’s where the Rouze cards come from in the first place. Another Blade – no. Amane doesn’t want them to fight – doesn’t want them to have to fight. So she seals their powers. Their emblems move onto the Another Blade… armor, I guess is as good a word as any.
And now their wounds are red.
But she just took the powers of two Jokers, absorbing them into one person. Leaving one person with the Joker designation.
Herself.
Please note that I typed this immediately before restarting, only to watch the Sealing Stone appear.
It’s the end of the world as we know it, and nobody feels fine.
Oh, the cinematography of this show. A beam visually separating Sougo and White!Woz from their angles on the stairs – it’s going the opposite direction, making an x with the handrail behind them.
We’re back to the question of “And then what?”.
White!Woz’s future is gone, the potential isn’t there anymore, so he’d rather there not be a future at all. I guess we’ll never see if my ‘a future frozen in an endless moment’ theory was right. Pity. I was wondering if they would go that route for him.
Oooh, an orchestral version of ‘Zi-O: King of Time’!
“You can’t just give up! What’s the use in assuming that it’s over?” Sougo is cheering on even his enemy this boy is not nearly as dark as he assumed in the Ryuki arc, oh my goodness. “You can’t say that any one future is set in stone, so keep trying, keep opposing us! I’ll... No. We’ll keep foiling your plans, but you can’t just give up on the world.”
And the orchestral theme just keeps rising in the background.
Oh… and Sougo said the same thing to Woz. Geiz says that he can’t stand living in the past. And, like I guessed last episode, in like, the fourth section of this liveblog… The past that they’ve lived is, technically, still in the future from where they are now. From Sougo’s perspective, and from the perspective of time itself, none of that has happened yet.
Besides, like Geiz is saying, they came to the past to change history anyway. They’re making a new future, all of them – Sougo, Tsukuyomi, and Geiz… and Woz.
“Do you want in?”
“… That sounds interesting.”
Hm. The Trinity watch – which is somehow successfully created by White!Woz – has all three of the current Belt Voices, doesn’t it? The two that the Ziku Driver uses and the high-pitched one from the BeyonDriver.
“If you use this, I will accept it.”
… accept what? The option to create a new future? The future that Sougo’s aiming for?
Nifty – the light from Regulus and the Day of Oma burns out the clouds from the Sealing Stone.
Pffft - ‘the light is guiding us’ no, no it’s not so much that…
(I love the ‘wtf is going on’ faces from Kenzaki and Hajime)
GEEZ Trinity’s basically a mini-Sentai mech, with all three of them in one place inside.
“Guys, no, I’m sorry, I know none of us know what is going on, but I have to take control for a second, I have to do my speech okay, it’s in my contract. This is not optional.”
I like how the hand on the clock moves to point to whoever’s in control of the body.
I really like how Trinity forms all of their weapons – and how they dissolve when discarded. Nice touch.
And I really like the triumphant section of ‘King of Time’ playing behind this fight.
...Regulus is shining still, brighter than before. With a ‘shine’ of pink, yellow, and green. Their colors.
“Why did you choose to let me stay?”
“Because I think you have more potential.”
White!Woz accepts that ‘his’ world will never exist, and that Sougo will create a better one. He goes out peacefully, and warning Black!Woz – no. Warning Woz that Sir Swartz is planning more than they know.
He goes out with a shimmer of golden motes of light, and the glitching effects that have been a key sign of time re-writing an existence.
Oma Zi-O: You’re almost done… only six more until you’re me.
Sougo: But what I don’t want to?
Daiki yoinked the Future Note. Show off.
Which, of course, creates a slight problem for me and my potential ‘fix it’ of Zi-O, down the line in the Re-United ‘verse. Or, rather, a complication.
See, the draft I’ve got has at minimum one of the Den-O’s and Zeronos ferrying Riders back and forth. THAT is how I plan to deal with the amnesia issue. Not warning them in the present and past, like I had planned. But having the ‘contemporary’ versions of them just. Sorta travel backward, and pretend that they’re the ones that from in the past. Just… ya know, keep their past selves unaware of what’s going on, take the brunt of temporary power removal. Fill in for themselves when Zi-O and Geiz meet them.
And I had everyone scheduling this from Tsukasa having somehow duplicated Black!Woz’s book when he grabbed it during the Ghost arc. I have never seen Decade, and have no idea if that would even be part of his powerset. But, like, Trinity just knocked off his ability to turn Riders into weapons and stuff, so. Ya know.
I’m apparently not that far off, if I can work Daiki into it. … need to watch Den-O and Decade first, but that’s just how it goes.
The complication is my stated ‘not wanting to touch on Zi-O’ aspect. I now admit that I want to handle it somehow, but if they keep airing concepts similar to ones I’ve been working on for months, I’m going to get accused of lying.
Arceus, Cosmos, and Gaim DAMNIT.
Of course, you may have noticed I skipped a scene there during the re-cap.
Because not for the first time, something has been saved by Zi-O taking powers away. I’m still decidedly not here for the amnesia concept, and I am not okay with the fact that certain characters have potentially been un-created – Ankh, Parad, Poppy and the like among them – but here’s the thing.
Both Kenzaki and Hajime remember being Blade and Chalice. They can properly retire – They’re both bleeding red. Hajime was never human to start with – he was using the Spirit card to be human. But he seems to be human now. The Blade and Chalice watches appear to have taken their Joker situation out of the picture.
Like how his intervention by introducing the father to Emu, who clearly went on to point him to Hiiro, saved the son during the Ex-Aid arc.
Like how the girls would have never gone missing during the Fourze and Faiz arc, to say nothing of Takumi and Kusaka being decidedly more alive than usual.
Like how Kaito also appears to be alive again after the Gaim arc.
And how neither the girl or her brother died in the Ghost arc.
How Rentaro can become Shinobi in a newly created potential future.
How Mondo got to meet his father.
… admittedly, his apparently re-creating the events of Ryuki might be a problem. I haven’t had a chance to watch any of the RIDER TIME specials, but I hear that’s what happened? Sorry, Shinji.
But here’s the thing. A not-insignificant number of things have turned out for the better… and as long as the ‘you were never riders’ thing can be… worked around…
Hmn.
((also, just a quick note, if you comment on any of the sections in here, I’d really appreciate it if you specify which statements you’re talking about. These recaps get really long, so... y’know, it’ll make it a little easier for a conversation.))

Zi-O episodes 31 & 32 - AGITO TIME
Okay, I want to know how long this actually takes me this time around, so… I’m starting playback at about a quarter past midnight. (I got distracted earlier, when I told myself I was going to start. I’m not good at timekeeping.)
((also, as I mentioned in the previous liveblog, if you comment on any of the sections in here, I’d really appreciate it if you specify which statements you’re talking about. These recaps get really long, so… y’know, it’ll make it a little easier for a conversation.))
~cut goes here~
Bullet casings? In MY Kamen Rider? It’s more likely than you think!
(I haven’t seen Agito, but as with Ryuki and Blade, I’ve seen the History Of’s that Marcosatsu did. So, I… should be okay? Ish.)
But why do they want G3 units nationwide? Are they finally sick of all the yearly monster attacks, and doing something about it? … Okay, yeah, I don’t believe it either, but hey, we can speculate!
Ouch, rest in piece G3 user number 2. He got thrown so hard he’s stuck in the viewing window.
Another!Another Agito’s got some muscle on him.
aaaand this is the tribute arc where the Another Rider name scheme is going to be incredibly problematic, like people worried.
I get that there are six watches left to acquire – notably including Drive, since the one they currently have was brought back by Geiz. But would it have killed Toei to let the W and Kuuga watches be in-show? Would it? They had to make them appear in the movie? Specifically, the movie that the producer has said is only psuedo-canon?!
Six left, and Sougo doesn’t want them to become Oma Zi-O. He wants them so he can stop Oma Zi-O, so that he can match his power. But, you know, the team kind of lucked into finding them, what with the Another Riders being created… or… hm. They get the Ride Watches because of the Another Riders. The Time Jackers are the ones creating the Another Riders, and they’re from the future, and know full well how Zi-O acquires his watches. The thing is, they initially said it was to ‘find a new candidate for king.’ We know that that’s not nearly so true as Heure and Hora were led to believe, since Swartz already had his candidate chosen. And we were led to believe that said candidate was Hiryuu, Another Zi-O. Except! “I’ll see you on the Day of Oma” wasn’t… exactly said to Hiryuu, was it? And then, we saw that an earlier version of Swartz was responsible for the bus crash, as he was looking for A Boy Who Would Be King. He found Sougo.
Sougo has been his choice all along.
(un-Pause to hear Woz talk!)
“No, no, we just need to continue as we’ve been doing. The watches will show up.” … Well, you’re not wrong.
Junichiro rushes in, asking if they were watching. And, I mean, I don’t know Japanese, but I am pretty sure that under normal circumstances, people don’t usually use the English verb ‘to watch’ when referring to a news broadcast.
Come on, man, you just won me over in the last few arcs, don’t blow this.
Wait, the public knows about the G3 units?! Were they common knowledge in Agito? Or, at least, publicly available knowledge?
HAHAHA I didn’t even NOTICE that Woz hadn’t done his Recap yet! Oh man, I’m slipping! But no, now he does it, by Pausing the show, and incidentally casting everyone else in the room in shadow. … Wait, has he been actually doing that the entire time? Just? Pausing time for a moment to talk at us? I mean, I wouldn’t put it past him, the drama hog that he is. Also, where did you get the confetti, sir? And is that going to be in the actual room when time resumes?
Meanwhile, in… France, I think. “I must go. My planet city needs me.”
It takes four minutes into the episode to reach the Opening. It took me almost 20 to reach that.
Also, the shot of Zi-O II has been replaced by Trinity. I like how the pose they chose is basically a combination of all three of their styles. As a small note, it flashes over the faces in the order of Zi-O, Geiz, and Woz, before moving into a full-body shot. Also, I can’t remember if this change had been made last episode or not, but there’s no sign of the Future Note in the Kamen Rider Woz segment anymore. (I think it would have been a nice touch to have the Twilight Chronicle replace it in the background, but oh well.)
… and I just remembered that with Agito’s lore, that ‘my planet needs me’ quote isn’t nearly as out of left field as I intended when I made it a few minutes ago.
Okay, I know that we have the incredibly ominous “We really don’t know what Swartz is up to” discussion with Heure and Hora, and him interrupting as he is prone to do, and him being all “No, I’ve already got a plan going, as I am prone to do.” But what I’m stuck on is just how many sugar cubes he’s adding to his… well, I don’t know if it’s tea or coffee, but it’s far too many.
(Swartz has just joined Haruto and Kiriya in the ‘that can no longer be called coffee’ club.)
Damnit, Geiz, I wanted to make a crack about how ‘it’s less that the police are tracking the target, and more that the target is tracking the police’! It does make sense that this particular division would be fighting Another Riders, though, especially since they look even more like MOTWs than Kino did. Zi-O!Another Agito kind of has a toothy grin, too. I remember being weirded out by Kino!Another Agito’s design when I watched Gorider, but this is just. Eesh. Creepy.
Ohhh dear. If Tsukuyomi’s an amnesiac, that would explain her lack of last name. And since this is a time travel show, we’re all screwed! She could have been anyone! ...That sequence in the opening, with Tsukuyomi and the Time Jackers on the stairs, before they disappear and she’s alone is feeling really ominous right about now.
And this is a good arc for this reveal – since Agito’s Shoichi was an amnesiac protagonist. … hang on, wasn’t there a sibling confusion then, too, like in W? With… Philip… oh dear.
I have avoided shipping in this season at all costs, for precisely this type of reason. And because it’s time travel, to avoid whatever it was that happened in Den-O. (I haven’t seen past the first two episodes of Den-O. I’m working on it!)
OKAY! That aside! I’ve noticed that even though Tsukuyomi has the tablet, and pulls up all sorts of information on it, Geiz is usually the one to bring up who the past Riders were. He knew about Wizard, I’m dead certain there were other instances that I can’t recall off the top of my head, and he knows who the G3 unit is.
Okay, I love that we finally have officials trying to keep untransformed riders out of the battle field. It’s about time, and not just for Zi-O, it’s been lacking in the genre as a whole. I also like that the people in G3 armor don’t seem to trust the three Riders.
HEY! HOLD UP! SOUGO HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE OMEGA SYMBOL IS?! I thought you were terrible at math and science! Those are pretty much the only place you’d see that, these days – wait. Sougo’s a history buff; or, at least, that’s his only good subject. Or, was his only good subject, because he’s graduated. (Good for him!!!) Omega is Greek, maybe he actually could have picked it up in a history class!
Also, is this confirmation that Agito is supposed to be written using omega, like it its logo?
Mind you, it’s not as though anyone is going to be actually doing that, but still.
JESUS FUCK WHAT THE HELL DID FAKE!ANOTHER AGITO JUST DO? He tore off the chest armor, and ugghgh that sounded like he was trying to eat the poor man, but now said man is getting up, what the hell-
AAAAAGHAAAAGH! OH SHIT! OH SHIT!
Agito powers as zombie plague.
Kino was Another Agito because Agito is more of a powerset than a name.
It is now 1:10. I am ten minutes into ep 31.
This explains the excessively toothy mouth, at least.
Tsukuyomi used a Time Stop. With the same effects and sounds as the Time Jackers. And it was super targeted, too – it only hit the Another Agito that was attacking her and the officer. She didn’t know she could do that. Woz didn’t know she could do that.
It looks like Swartz didn’t know she could do that.
It looks like the time stop is an innate power.
Okay, okay, back to 9-to-5.
So, yeah, everyone thinks the Another Agitos are really weird. Sougo wants to try and find Kamen Rider Agito. Absolutely nobody is surprised that he has no idea how to follow through on that idea. “What if we try the internet?” Sougo, he was active in 2001, internet archives are terrible for going back to 2011, to say nothing of – Sougo.
Sougo. Kid. Why do you know how to get auto-correct to make the omega symbol? Did you actually learn that for a history class? I mean, good catch on the spelling of the name, and it worked, so. Points? I guess?
Okay, why is Woz’s voice echoing so much today?! I thought the first time I noticed it was because they were outside, but it’s happening inside, too. What gives?
Heure, no. No ‘proving you’re still useful’ to Swartz. Get OUT of there! Just go! It’s not safe for you! You just keep raising death flags!
But what Swartz is most interested in right now… is testing Tsukuyomi’s new power.
Sougo immediately asks if Kamen Rider Agito is in. Like the blunt little fool he is. His second try isn’t much better. Being Geiz is suffering.
But when the woman – Mana, right? When Mana recognizes the name Agito as a person, Geiz takes notice. Remember, boys, everyone else still remembers now, too.
Haha, see, Shoichi has the right reaction to the ‘he wants to be a king’ speech! Dumbfounded shock.
GEIZ! Why are you suggesting heading ‘overseas’ with the Time Mazine to find Shoichi? That’s! That’s Sougo logic! Noooo don’t let that be what rubs off on you!
Case in point, Sougo thinks it’s a good idea!
UGH Both Swartz AND Woz have had that stupid echo all episode, it’s driving me up a wall. It makes it feel like the audio’s balance is off or something.
So, creeper mc-purple-coat wants to… ‘test out’ Tsukuyomi’s power. Fair. She says that it’s none of his business, and that she doesn’t have any power, which is also fair. But I’d say that siccing one of the Another Agitos on her is overkill. And terrifying.
...wait, could Shoichi tell when enemies were appearing in his season? I legitimately don’t know.
(16 minutes in and 1 hour fifteen minutes later)
Okay, so, your choices here, boys.
Zi-O II. Good call, powerful, can read movements ahead of time.
Quiz. VERY good call. His powerset ‘asks’ the opponent to answer questions, or get electrocuted. Normally, I’m decidedly not okay with that, but from a tactical point, right now it makes sense. The rampaging Another Agitos are like, well, they’re Fast Zombies. They can’t answer questions.
BUT STOP USING REVIVE. I get why Typhoon is a good choice tactically. Like I said, FAST Zombies. Being even faster is a good survival strategy. But using REVIVE is a very BAD survival strategy.
Kudos for the touch of Sougo telling the cops to help their wounded – which they notably weren’t doing before he said that.
HI SPEAKING OF BAD CALLS! IN THIS CASE TRINITY IS A BAD IDEA!
Like Geiz says, you need NUMBERS.
Running Decade and Ex-aid would be a better choice right about now! That would give you two Zi-Os! ...and if Geiz gets Ghost, he can summon some of the parka ghosts to help, because they let THAT be a thing for the Ghost watch!
WOZ NO. You don’t need to IWAE this! This is now a no REJOICE zone! Go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.
Although, now the cops are evacuating the heck out of there while Woz distracts the Agitos with his absurdity.
Unfortunately, he’s also distracting Sougo and Geiz with said absurdity.
Quick! Back to sanity! Tsukuyomi! We need you to be the impulse control for all three of the boys now! I’m so sorry, we kept Woz contained as long as possible, but this much proximity to Sougo at one clip has spread the cloud cuckoo lander traits.
“Oh, you don’t remember anything? Well, you’re probably better off not knowing, I suppose.” (F you too, Swartz.)
“Do… you know something?”
~The sound of a Legend Rider’s belt approaches from the shadows~
Kamen Rider Agito is on the scene.
And Swartz is smiling at that.
THAT! Is NOT how Bike Fu works!
OH LORDY the Power Knuckle buzzsaw and the spear’s… well, spear projections can combine into a massive, even pointier circular saw blade! Trinity really IS a fusion form, isn’t it?
“...wait, where’d the others go?”
It was! A distraction! And a very good one!
It is now 1:50. I’ve been at this for… one hour, 35 minutes. I’ve watched one episode.
Oh boy.
Time for ep 32!
Yooooo! Okay! So! Heure and Hora are stepping in because Swartz was ‘dragging his feet’, they weren’t invited, because he’s an ass. But Heure! Just! Pulled the Another Watch out of one of the transformed Agitos – not the main one, mind you, he’s ticked off now – and! He! Pushed it to Rider Agito, drained his power, and turned! The Another Watch! Into a real Ride Watch!
!!!!
Tsukuyomi stopped time to save Shoichi from Another!Another Agito… which is great! Good work! Except that it’s SUPER POWERFUL. She can move, but everyone else is completely frozen. COMPLETELY. ...Everyone but Swartz, who’s eyes are moving.
(click) AS IT IS WRITTEN HERE!
(GDI Woz)
(and with a SPOTLIGHT, too!)
(Theatre kid Woz confirmed)
Woz, you’re incredibly proud of Sougo for graduating, aren’t you? You mentioned that last Recap, too!
(insert 20 minute gap to take care of the dishes here, resuming at 2:20)
Huh! The title card came in from the opposite side of the screen this time! Interesting!
Heure, you can’t just put a regular Ride Watch into an Another Rider, That can’t be good for the poor host. And, oh, no, look at that, he’s just turned into a duplicate of Kamen Rider Agito. An exact duplicate. Appearance-wise, anyway.
WELP.
Okay, I rag on him, but Junichiro’s reaction to Professional Chef Shoichi complementing his cooking is great.
And then right back to serious, as soon as he leaves the room.
“I’m sorry… they took my Rider powers from me.”
“Which is really weird, since those are literally part of me. Trust me, things were weird in the early ‘00’s, kid. A whole bunch of us wound up being not entirely human.”
Hora? Hang on, can you clarify that? “Does that mean she’s a Time Jacker too?”
Are. Are you saying that being a ‘Time Jacker’ isn’t a group affiliation? That it’s the name of a powerset?!
… Just like how ‘Agito’ is?
Okay, so the current active party layout is:
Team One: Sougo and Geiz, dealing with a swarm of Another Agitos, while Heure and Another Agito Prime watch.
‘Team’ Two: Woz confronting Swartz about Tsukuyomi’s powers. Apparently Swartz is ‘the only one’ who can grant powers over time, which implies that he gave them to Heure and Hora. But he didn’t give them to Tsukuyomi, and he implies himself that the two of them are ‘cut from the same cloth’. Woz knows what that means.
Team Three: Shoichi goes to talk to Tsukuyomi. He’s the resident voice of experience on finding out you’re not who you thought you were, after all.
Well, him, Philip, and Sento, but the other two aren’t exactly here at the moment.
So, yes, as I thought he’d do, after bringing Tsukuyomi to the restaurant, he tells her about his past. About how Shoichi Tsugami isn’t technically his name. About how he tried to live his life the best he could, after losing who he was, and finding out he had powers. It worked out for him. And after all, hasn’t she already been doing that? The power is just a little more than she knew about.
And right after he says “Haven’t you already been doing that”, guess what starts playing?
The instrumental version of ‘King of Time.’
...Huh. It’s more noticeable with Geiz, who’s usually either frowning or exasperated. But… we never see Tsukuyomi smile, either, do we?
And then, with Sougo…
“I’m fighting to make the world better, and that’s what you’re doing too, right? So, does it really matter who you used to be?”
She responds with a smile. It’s a good look for her.
And of course, Woz shows up with bad news.
“So, fighting Agito’s a BAD idea, because once there’s one Agito, there can be countless Another Agitos. We are going to be overwhelmed. This is literally straight from Swartz. We’re screwed.”
“You better not be playing double agent agai-”
“Well, I mean, I already saw that was going to happen, so…. Besides, we don’t really have a choice in the matter, since we need to get that watch.”
““...fine...””
((It’s about 2:50 now, so I’m at… a little over two hours.))
Stop! Using! Revive! Unless you guys worked out how to keep it’s time compression from literally killing you a little more with each use, you! Need! To! Not! Use! That!
Unfortunately, Fury and Kikai make perfect sense here – the brute strength should help keep you two from getting too injured.
AAAND then they go for Typhoon and Shinobi for a speed-off. BOYS! Stop it! Although, I will admit, the flight and teleport spamming is pretty cool when you’re not using it on each other.
AHAHAH! Shoichi’s playing distraction in a G3 suit! That makes a LOT of sense! He can’t fight in his usual manner right now – on account of his powers being otherwise occupied. But the G3 suits were meant for humans to fight monsters on a more level playing field. AND the Another Agitos had been going after police facilities… which they haven’t mentioned again, but it sure seems to be drawing attention to him.
Tsukuyomi’s already got really good control, hasn’t she? The first time, she froze only the one Another Agito, and nothing else in the area. The second, she panicked, and was able to stop literally everything. Well, again, Swartz was slightly moving. Slightly. This time, it’s four Another Agitos, but Shoichi, who was right in the middle of them, is unaffected.
One direct hit from Zi-O II was able to knock the Ride Watch out of Another Agito Prime, and it rolled right to it’s proper owner. And for the first time, we get to see a Rider regaining their powers – the Ride Watch fades from existence, and Shoichi’s belt reappears on his waist.
“Transform!”
And then a (largely reluctant) transformation into Trinity. Geiz has had it up to here with Woz’s Announcements. You don’t have to do them every time, you know. You used to only make those when a new power was achieved. You guys have done this twice already.
(Tsukuyomi is in hell. That’s the only explanation she can think of.)
I like that ripple effect they used for Agito’s own Trinity transformation. I don’t know what sort of effects they used in 2001/2002, but it’s nice to see a nod to older FX in this incredibly flashy show.
(Tsukuyomi is definitely in hell. That’s the only explanation she can think of.)
Woz just has to do a proclamation. I don’t think it’s even part of his contract, I think he’s just THAT into this sort of thing. He was BORN to be a herald. Problem for HIM is, even Sougo’s had enough.
But!
He thinks this might work.
~Old catchphrases reappearing is actually my jam!~
~Who knew?~
...okay, everyone who’s been following me through this liveblog for the past… six months that I’ve been doing liveblogs for. Oh. Huh. I. Genuinely hadn’t realized it had been that long. I started doing these full reactions with the Gaim arc in November. Hm.
!
!!
!!!!
!!!!!!!!
Over-Time included LYRIC SUBTITLES!
Zi-O! Why! Why can’t you put the song credits in the credits!
I mean, that would have been an INCREDIBLE spoiler in this case! But! Holy shit!
It would be a huge spoiler because this isn’t one of Zi-O’s songs.
This is from Agito. It’s titled BELIEVE YOURSELF.
This is appropriate.
The Zi-O team hasn’t had a real chance to fight alongside their predecessors. Not really. Zi-O and Geiz fought ‘with’ Build and Cross-Z, but they had to bow out shortly through the fight. Same with Ex-Aid. Ghost and Specter only fought together, not with the boys. Quiz and Kikai don’t count – they debuted in Zi-O. They fought AGAINST Decade and DiEnd. The next people to transform… were Blade and Chalice, and they weren’t working together. Their powers were taken before they could have fought as a team.
This? A fight with the Kamen Rider having his powers intact? Not just intact, actually, but returned? And not rapidly disappearing?
This is what we WANTED. I mean, hell, this is what the SHT movies SHOULD have been.
And the choice of song is incredibly fitting, too. I mean, here. Here’s the page on the KR Wiki. Go check it out, and you just try to tell me that’s not appropriate for Zi-O as a whole, but especially for the events lately, and of this arc.
Okay, okay, back to the battle. Which is glorious.
For one, Zi-O using one of the Agito Drones to hold part of his sword while he removes the mask element from it, so he can attach said mask to the other sword, and combining the two while the drone is still slightly impaled? That’s CLEVER. And I’m pretty sure that’s Sougo at work, too – he’s done similar before, getting others to turn his belt and complete his transformation. And the Kings Slash grows and impales several more drones before he swings.
And, interestingly, when Trinity and Agito prepare their finishers? Another Agito Prime forces his way through the drones to be the one to take the hit – to the point of standing directly in front of the two Rider Kicks, and putting his chest out there. Asking to be hit.
And that Dual Kick is SOMETHING ELSE! Driving him all the way across the plaza, knocking over any drones they encounter in the line of ‘fire’, and digging a trench into the ground! THIS is a fight scene!
Yet another entrusting of the watch.
Tsukuyomi has found her resolve.
Woz has found a secret.
And next episode –
Wait a minute.
(checks the calendar)
VERY nice.
Sougo’s birthday episode? Airs on his birthday. Nice planning, Toei! And you checked a calendar correctly this time!
(But you couldn’t be bothered to check the year when you set Kazumin’s phone, could you?)
Also, it looks like they might be aiming a little closer to the first part of Hibiki for the tribute arc, with the kanji appearing on screen in the preview.
((so, it’s now… 3:45, so I wound up taking… let’s see. Started at 12:15, so a complete time would be three and a half hours, but there was that twenty minute gap when I went from 31 to 32, so… about three hours and ten minutes to watch 40 minutes of a children’s Sunday morning superhero show.))
((WORTH IT.))
