these days a lot of romance in books, TV, and film leave me a bit cold, which sucks as a lover of romance. there has to be something ~interesting there for me. I've been watching the day of the jackal and it's pretty entertaining so far. but the one thing I haven't quite been able to wrap my head around is jackal's love for his wife, nuria. the show clearly wants us to believe he truly loves her, even if he can't shed his assassin skin and lies like crazy to her. he spies on her. he dreams about her. he thinks about her constantly. even more so than the baby which I (and the show apparently) regularly forget exists.

the chemistry between eddie redmayne and ursula corbero isn't necessarily the issue even though it is middling. ursula certainly does the best with what she's got, which isn't much. but I always struggle when shows place us in an established marriage or relationship and tells the audience how much the two characters love each other, without really being convincing of why they go to the lengths they do because of this love. the jackal is a sociopath with a hundred different faces (though we spend quite a bit of time with him in his true face). he has no qualms whatsoever about killing innocent people to accomplish his objectives. that's established within 20 minutes of the very first episode. so what does it take for this murderer-for-hire to fall in love? why should we be so convinced of this cold-blooded killer's love for his wife? what is it about her that made him fall in love? and vice versa? the show doesn't even try to make us second guess this love. on some level, I'd be obsessed with a suave killer brought to his knees by a woman to the point where he starts a family with her. the deception, the two separate lives, the cat and mouse of it all. but everything about them is spectacularly bland.

throughout the series nuria is constantly questioning who she fell in love with. but who did she fall in love with? in episode 7 we get flashbacks of their first meeting, at a restaurant where jackal is a regular and where nuria works as a waitress. she's hot and vivacious and effortlessly charming. he's a mysterious loner who seems sweet. jackal takes a shine to her and later asks her on a date, to which she immediately says yes. and that's it. that's pretty much all of the flavorless context we have for their relationship. we're simply supposed to believe they fell in love with each other. she doesn't even make him work for the date. there's no push and pull there. she's not even a calculating golddigger or anything, just completely guileless. our favorite sociopath fell in love because she's just that charming? our charming waitress falls for this boring and rich-looking foreigner and that's it? and then we're told that she's completely trusting of him up until the ~turning point. ok. I don't believe the show is trying to pull wool over our eyes. they very much want us to believe there's love there. but there's just nothing convincing me of why these two characters love each other. this failmarriage is of no interest to me.

otoh, the connection jackal has with zina is compelling and sexy. this mysterious corporate shark archetype of a woman who dared to meet an assassin in person. who went to bat for this assassin even when her bosses were not convinced he was the man for their goals. who broke into this assassin's temporary lodgings and withstood his menacing energy. who wasn't afraid to yell and put pressure on this scary assassin. I'd be more obsessed if the actress was better at acting and there was actual chemistry between her and eddie. alas.

otooh, there is ALSO serious messy romantic potential with bianca. also a sociopathic liar. also a married woman (who we're also supposed to believe loves her husband. lol.) with a child. a woman who will do anything to catch jackal. a woman who has no qualms about using innocent people who get killed in the process (even if she does feel some degree of guilt about it). like the parallels are allll there. but she's black and we all know how that goes. in another series jackal would be intrigued and also as obsessed with this mi6 agent who somehow always finds him. sigh.

Úrsula Corberó, Charles Dance, Richard Dormer Join Eddie Redmayne in ‘The Day of the Jackal’ Series. (THR, February 23, 2024)

Additional new cast members for the large-scale assassin show for Sky and Peacock, which also stars Lashana Lynch, include Chukwudi Iwuji, Lia Williams, Eleanor Matsuura and Jonjo O’Neill.

Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch will be joined by Úrsula Corberó, known for her role as Tokyo in Netflix hit Money Heist, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Crown) and Richard Dormer (Fortitude, Game of Thrones) in the upcoming TV adaptation of The Day of the Jackal for Sky and Peacock.

Corberó will play Nuria, “someone at the heart of The Jackal’s personal life, entirely unaware of who he truly is,” while Dance will feature as Timothy Winthrop, and Dormer will play a character called Norman.

Also joining the cast are Chukwudi Iwuji (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Split) as Osita Halcrow, Lia Williams (The Capture, The Crown) as Isabel Kirby, Khalid Abdalla (The Crown, The Kite Runner) as Ulle Dag Charles, Eleanor Matsuura (The Walking Dead, I Used To Be Famous) as Zina Jansone, Jonjo O’Neill (Andor, Bad Sisters) as Edward Carver, and Sule Rimi (Classified, Andor) as Paul Pullman.

Redmayne plays the famous fictional assassin in the original series based on the Frederick Forsyth novel and award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name from Universal Pictures. The star is also executive producing the show.

The Day of the Jackal is being billed by the producers as a “bold, modern reimagining of the beloved and respected novel and film.” While staying true to the DNA of the original story, which was set in 1962 and based on attempts to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like “antihero” at the heart of the story in a “high octane, cinematic, globetrotting ‘cat and mouse’ thriller,” set amidst the turbulent geo-political landscape of our time.

Adik Perempuan yang Senantiasa Dijaga

"Karena sampeyan itu adik nya Mas yang cantik, makanya harus dijaga dek", kata Mas Akbar setiap sesi curhat.

"Terus kenapa nek gitu, tujuannya upload foto buat apa? Kasian dia dek, suamimu di masa depan. Cantikmu banyak diliat orang lain sebelum dia yang ngelihat. Udah, kalau punya foto cantik baik itu bareng atau sendirian, disimpen aja. Sampeyan itu cantik, makanya dijaga". Jelas nya lagi.

Bukan hal yang baru. Memang. Bukan masalah cantik tidak cantiknya tapi tentang penjagaan. Setiap kali memilki foto, harus meminta pertimbangan kepada kakak kakak dulu hehe. Kalau terlalu memperlihatkan diri, pastilah kakak kakak langsung memberi larangan. Atau misal sudah terupload, pasti ada saja kata kata kakak yang membuat teriang-ngiang, bingung, akhirnya memutuskan menghapus foto sebelum 24 jam. Jujur, dulu aku sebal, mengapa harus sedemikian ketatnya, tapi sekarang aku paham, aku adalah adik yang sangat beruntung. Dijaga dengan sangat baik oleh kakak kakak nya.

Terutama, beliau, yang paling resah, yang paling-was was; Mas Akbar, kakak laki laki pertama dan satu satunya.

Mas Akbar, begitu kami memanggilnya. Anak laki laki satu satunya Mama ini menjadi kakak terbaik bagi kami, terutama aku, bungsu, yang kata mas Akbar, "lebih banyak harus dijaga". Selain karena, tinggal aku yang belum punya penjaga (belum menikah), sedari kecil, Mas Akbar sangat menjagaku. Mungkin karena aku anak yang mudah menangis dan sedikit manja, tapi insyaAllah paling nurut sama kakak (ya karena merasa perlu dibimbing)

Selain upload foto, Mas Akbar juga banyak mewanti wanti tentang ikhwan-ikhwan bakwan di luar sana. Semisal adiknya ini banyak yang mendekati, Mas Akbar adalah orang pertama paling tidak terima. Bahkan, dulu, misal ada yang mendekati dan dirasa keterlaluan, mas Akbar langsung meminta kontaknya, agar bisa diberi "warning" kepada ikhwan yang banyak ngechat itu, "blokir aja dek, ikhwan baik ngga kayak gitu harusnya, walaupun tampilannya sholeh, bukan berarti baik.

Sampai detik ini, Mas Akbar juga masih menjadi tempat curhat terbaik ku untuk melihat segala sesuatu seimbang, dari sudut pandang laki laki, lebih realistis tanpa melebih-lebihkan. Apa adanya. Apalagi, tentang hati dan tekad untuk menunggu kehadiran seseorang yang terbaik.

Walaupun kadang membuat kesal, misal suka mematikan lampu tiba tiba, menakut-nakuti, mematikan tv yang sedang ditonton dengan wireless, mematikan nasyid ruang tamu secara diam-diam dari kamar, menyembunyikan laptop adeknya sampai nangis tapi begitulah Mas, yang paling jail.

Pun mas adalah orang pertama yang selalu menjadi tempat menangis kalau sedang dimarahi orangtua, menjadi orang yang paling semangat mengantarkan adeknya ini kemanapun pergi, bahkan sampe skrng, kalau mau nyebrang jalan pun, Mas Akbar masih menggandeng tanganku. YaAllah, padahal aku dah gede dan bisa nyebrang sendiri, walaupun memang cara nyebrangku aneh dan masih suka takut🤣😭

Mas Akbar adalah kakak yang paling bahagia kalau adek kecilnya ini pulang. Selain karena tidak sabar mendengar "story telling" adeknya, Mas Akbar juga sudah melist daftar jajan yang ingin dibuatkan dan siap mengantar untuk beli peralatan kue maupun bahan roti. Mas Akbar juga tidak malu misal harus membeli bumbu/bahan masak di tukang sayur hehe jarang lho laki laki usia 28 tahun mau melakukannya ehe.

Kata Mas Akbar, sampai srkng Mas Akbar tidak pernah pacaran pun, salah satunya karena menjagaku. Beliau tidak ingin adeknya dipacari orang lain sebagaimana beliau menjaga dirinya dari perbuatan zina. Mas Akbar juga pernah bilang, bahwa mas tidak akan menikah sebelum adiknya ini menikah, "Mas belum tenang dek," katanya. Pun wejangan-wejangan yang selalu diberikan sebelum mengantarku sebelum kembali ke perantauan.

Betapa beruntungnya aku. Anak perempuan keempat. Menjadi muara perhatian dan kasih sayang kakak kakaknya. Menjadi pusat penjagaan kakak laki lakinya. Memiliki kakak yang senantiasa menjaga dan tidak pernah putus doa nya. Sangat bersyukur rasanya diberikan kakak kakak yang sholih, yang insyaAllah mulia adab dan sikapnya.

Semoga hal baik selalu menyertai kakak laki laki satu satunya ini. Semoga dilancarkan dunia pekerjaannya. Semoga dipertemukan dengan jodoh yang shalihah, penyayang, lembut budi dan perangainya, juga yang paling penting, bisa masak. Karena mas Akbar sangat suka makanan dan jajan rumahan, tidak suka makan di luar hehehe

When we think of the ‘ibadur-Rahman, we would probably imagine that these amazing servants of Allah live in a pure, clean community. That their society consists of righteous believers; and their academical, financial, and legal institutions must have been 100% completely compliant with the shari’ah. There are no shameless websites, billboards, and TV programs; and everyone is nurtured upon Islamic morals and values. These scenarios are what we would expect.

But when we read the aayat about the ‘ibadur-Rahman, we will find contrary to what we believe. One of those aayat is:

🌟 ❛And those who invoke not any other god along with Allah, nor kill such person as Allah has forbidden except for just cause, nor commit fornication…❜ 【Surah al-Furqan 25:68】

One of the qualities of ‘ibadur-Rahman is that they do not commit shirk, murder, nor zina. But let’s be honest. Is this a difficult quality to attain, where we can say about someone: "What a wonderful person, maa shaa Allah, he doesn’t commit murder"?

Rather, it becomes a truly praiseworthy quality when the entire society is filled with shirk, when everyone around you is murdering and committing zina — but you’re the only one in the society that does not fall into these things. That’s when it becomes a praiseworthy quality. So the ‘ibadur-Rahman may live in a corrupt and sinful society, such was the case with Prophet Lut ‘alayhis-salaam and his daughters.

As believers, we don't change according to the norms of the society. A believer is always pure, no matter where you put him. Prophet Yusuf ‘alayhis-salaam was placed in a home with a corrupted lady, but it did not change him. Prophet Musa ‘alayhis-salaam ended up in the corrupted palace of Fir’aun, and it did not change him either. Rather, they all emerged even more pure, and at a higher standing than when they entered.

A believer doesn’t allow his society to drag him to their level. Rather, he brings khayr to where he is. He is the catalyst, who brings what is good, and what is better. May Allah make us among the 'ibadur-Rahman!

Wengine SIO WALEMAVU lakini ni Omba omba kwa sababu ya kutojishughulisha wanataka kila kitu waletewe walipo hata kama upo uwezekano wa kupata anachokitaka, lakini mpaka mtu mwingine afanye kwa ajili yake.

(iii). MANENO BILA MATENDO

.....Tabia ya uvivu mara nyingi ni kuongea sana, lakini hakuna hatua zinazochukuliwa. Wengi wanaishia na kauli ya...... NITAFANYA.... Wengine wameweka mipango mingi, mfano KUOMBA utasimia anasema... Nitaomba, lakini haombi. Pia mwenye tabia ya uvivu anaandamwa na hali ya KUHAIRISHA na kutotimiza alichohairisha.

.....Lakini iweni WATENDAJI wa neno, wala si wasikiaji tu, hali mkijidanganya nafsi zenu. Kwa sababu mtu akiwa ni msikiaji wa neno tu, wala SI MTENDAJI, mtu huyo ni KAMA MTU ANAYEJIANGALIA uso wake katika kioo. Maana hujiangalia, kisha huenda zake, mara akasahau jinsi alivyo.

(iv). KUISHI BILA AKIBA

.....Mara nyingi mtu mvivu ni mvivu hata kufikiri maisha yake ya mbeleni. Wengi watakwambia... Kipato ni kidogo huwezi kuweka akiba, Wengine kudai wakipata fedha mahitaji ni mengi kuliko fedha zenye..... Zote sababu zina mashiko lakini tambua unakaribisha umaskini.

MUNGU anapokupa pesa yoyote iwe unayoifahamu hata 1,000/= anachokitaka kukiangalia ni usimamizi mzuri wa hicho ulichopewa hata kikiwa kidogo anataka uweke akiba, maana kila akupacho amekigawanya (Mkate - Matumizi, Mbegu - Akiba), ukila yote unategemea NINI, Je utatajirishwa?!.

....MUNGU ampaye MBEGU mwenye kupanda, na MKATE uwe chakula, atawapa mbegu za kupanda na kuzizidisha, naye atayaongeza mazao ya haki yenu; ili MKITAJIRISHWA katika vitu vyote mpate kuwa na ukarimu wote, umpatiao MUNGU shukrani kwa kazi yetu.

(v). UZEMBE

....Uzembe ni kukosa uwajibikaji na umakini kwa unalolitenda yaani kushindwa kuishi kwa kiwango cha uangalizi ambacho mtu mwenye akili timamu angetekeleza katika mazingira yale yale na kukosa nidhamu, kutojali, kupuuza au kutofanya kazi kabisa.

Mfano

Inaweza kuwa wakati wa mavuno au kukusanya /kuweka akiba /kuhifadhi wakati unavyo, lakini kwa sababu ya tabia ya uvivu inasababisha kuzembea na kuona nitapata hata kesho, mwisho uhitaji huja kwa ghafla, na hapo utaanza Malalamiko.

..... Akusanyaye wakati wa hari ni mwana mwenye hekima; Bali asinziaye wakati wa mavuno ni mwana mwenye kuaibisha.

(Vi). UMASKINI

.....Tabia ya uvivu mara nyingi uzalisha tabia ya KUPENDA KUSINGIZIA na ukiipenda usingizi umaskini utakufuata tu, Ingawaje sio kila umaskini unaletwa na uvivu, lakini mara nyingi Ukikosa bidii kwenye maisha yako unakaribisha umaskini (njaa).

.....Uvivu humtia mtu katika usingizi mzito; Na nafsi yake mvivu itaona njaa.

(vii). ULEGEVU NA KUTEGEA

Ulegevu ni hali ya kutenda kwa kutegea au bila kujibidiisha.

....Atendaye mambo kwa mkono mlegevu huwa maskini; Bali mkono wake aliye na bidii hutajirisha.

....Mithali 10:4...

Kuna laana sisi wenyewe tunazitafuta, unachokifanya kilicho halali unawwzeshwa na MUNGU, ukifanya kwa ulegevu unajipatia laana baada ya baraka.

....Na alaaniwe mtu afanyaye kazi ya BWANA kwa ulegevu.

....Yeremia 48:10....

Kiujumla tabia ya uvivu ni hatari sana na kuepukana nayo kabisa na unaishinda kwa KUONGEZA BIDII, Amina.
