DAY 17 • A SONG WITH A POLITICAL OR SOCIETAL THEME

Rammstein are political. Whether they like it or not. Whether through their songs or their videos. And have been since the very beginning. Remember that for the media and part of German society, Rammstein were (are?) perceived as an extreme right-wing band. Rammstein have always denied this, and even wrote a song about it called 'Links 2 3 4'. Remember that Rammstein sometimes borrowed the aesthetic of the GDR, a socialist regime. Remember that today everything is political. Although their political approach is above all a critique of the society around them, of what they see or hear in the media and of the human condition at its most violent and miserable.

I could mention for example : 'Links 2 3 4' (2001) a response to accusations of extreme right-wing sympathies, asserting a "left-wing" position while playing on ambiguity ; 'Amerika' (2004) a criticism of US cultural and economic imperialism ; 'Mein Land' (2011) a reflection on nationalism and anti-immigration movements ; 'Deutschland' (2019) a critical and nuanced vision of German history, evoking both pride and pain ; 'Radio' (2019) evokes censorship and freedom of expression under the GDR. 'Ausländer' (2019) a critique of relations of domination, sex tourism and the inequalities between rich and poor countries. Or 'Zeig Dich' (2019) which has been used by victims of sexual abuse by the Catholic Church in Germany. And of course 'Angst' (2022) a critique of the effects of fear on the individual and society, highlighting how an initially fictional threat (Schwarzer Mann) becomes a frightening and dangerous reality when fear is stoked and exploited (my analysis of Angst here).

I love the song 'Angst' and its video, but as I've already talked about it, I'm going to choose another one. A song that criticises a part of our society that I can't stand.

This song is 'Zick Zack' from the album Zeit (2022)

This song is a scathing critique of the obsession with cosmetic surgery and the quest for physical perfection. It adopts a brutal, satirical tone to denounce the social pressure exerted on individuals, particularly women, to match unrealistic standards of beauty. With its sarcastic and provocative tone, the song pushes the absurdities of cosmetic surgery to the extreme to underline their absurdity.

The phrase "Tick Tack, du wirst alt" (Tick Tack, you're getting old) underlines the fear of time passing and the need to stay young at all costs. And the phrase "Deine Zeit läuft langsam ab" (Your time is running out slowly) suggests that growing old is seen as a condemnation. In a world where at 30 you're already considered old, cosmetic surgery starts earlier and earlier.

The passage "Ist die Frau im Mann nicht froh / Alles ganz weg, sowieso" (If the woman in the man is not happy, then everything must go) can be interpreted as a critique of rigid gender standards and societal expectations around identity.

I really like this denunciation of the dictatorship of appearance and the excesses of cosmetic surgery. It highlights the alienation that individuals can suffer when faced with beauty injunctions, and the physical and psychological suffering that ensues.

DAY #3: 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞

I've referenced the song prior in Day 1, but not as my ultimate choice, so this is its spot! It's gotta go to "Zick Zack."

It's not a song that has any personal, major significance to me as far as meaning goes (I literally do not care whether someone wants almost any form of cosmetic surgery or similar procedures for whatever reason, so long as they're not seriously hurting themselves, HOWEVER I'm 100% on board with the essence of the song being it's not necessary to still be an attractive individual), I just think the song is SO fun and probably the catchiest song I've ever heard; I DON'T want to know just how many fucking times I have listened to this song since it came out lmfao.

Also worth mentioning, I sorta think this music video is what really kicked my interest in the band beyond their music into gear; I've loved their music for over a decade now, I'm talking all the way back in high school, but it was around Zeit's release that I just totally hyperfixated on them, because I was just so very charmed by their silliness. So it's got a really special place in my heart! :')
