I was talking a couple of nights back to @savebylou about trying to find a way to talk about what I wrote this year, sorta like a year in review because it would be fun to reflect. She sent me a post from @haztobegood and I thought I'd give it a go answering the questions.

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): I’m gonna pick three. 

Every Star has such a special place in my heart forever and I loved exploring their friendship. Cried writing it, cry thinking about it now.

It Takes An Ocean Not To Break came out very quickly and was healing to write.

Summer Skin, Pressed On Mine was the first Ziall fic I posted and I had such a blast working through that idea. I couldn’t get the idea to fit within the plot of the larger fic I’ve been working on all year so I made it a stand-alone and it was so fun. 

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): None of them. There are parts of some that could be done better but I’m trying to work on being less of a perfectionist.

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: Every time I wake up to my friends screaming about fics in comments or dms I can’t stop smiling. Their enthusiasm is infectious.

9. A time when writing was really, really hard: Can I say most of this year? Cause it’s true, trying to write funny fluffy romance when you’re getting divorced/working through all of that hurts real bad. It wasn’t all bad it got rough.

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: The scene with Isaac and Niall walking home in Pumpkin pretty much came to me fully formed. But I also had a lot of surprises working through Ziam’s relationship in that fic.

11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: 

He’s never told the true story of how the first tune had come about. It wasn’t as fictional as he said, but it wasn’t one kind stranger. It was everyone who’d seen he mattered and held his hand over the years. The fans who waved pride flags with wide grins on their faces. The ones on the streets and in lines who told him that they’d been brave because of him. His spouse, who’d seen the way he’d become a shell after every heartbreak he encountered called Gemma and Lottie to ask for help finding a therapist because he trusted them. His mum, who had encouraged the dream he had even on the worst days. They all became the woman in his song. He’d never say it, he couldn’t, he could barely play it some nights. Watching them from his perch in front of the drums he’s sure some of them understand what he’s saying. Maybe after a few days hidden away somewhere with Harry, he’ll ask them to look on her burner account to see what people are saying. He knows he shouldn’t, but he wants to know they know what he meant. He’s doing better than he ever was, and he’s better because they’re all with him. He loves a beautiful human, and they love him back. He’s proud of who he is and he hopes anyone in a similar situation can look at him and know it will all be alright. Freedom is where you make it.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: I’d like to think I’ve gotten better at letting myself be seen more. I explored more and ended up finally writing in a fandom that I’ve been reading in for years.  And I'm so proud of all the things I made this year.

13. How do you hope to grow next year: I’d love to keep writing at this level and hopefully publish something every month but we’ll see how that goes.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): @thechavier. More than half of these stories exist because she wanted to read them. Same with @whatifai, pumpkin exists because of her love of Harry and lime bikes. And of course, a thank you to the lads for providing endless material to use as a jumping off point.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: There was a scene I cut from Pumpkin that I put up later in Let All My Defences Down where Niall was talking to his Mum about growing up in the church that was pulled from my life. Henry using writing as a coping mechanism, especially on planes. Henry’s golden notebook. There’s probably more but those are the ones I can think of right now.

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Find the people who are willing to let you tease things out with them no matter how little sense it makes at the moment.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:  I’m so excited to finally release my biggest project to date in January. I’m really proud of How It Found Us (previews and bonus content here) and I can’t wait until it’s in y’all's hands. There’s also a secret project that I’m really excited about but it has no deadline yet.

I don’t know if you are going to answer me or not hopefully you do cause I want your opinion on this but why did they pushed zarry so much in 2013 like all those take me home tour moments and separate interviews during this is us press tour because of these “moments “ people genuinely believe they were closed but as someone whose not bias can see that zarry was the most co worker relationship in that band heck even ziall was much closer than those two

My very short take on this is that fandoms will ship 2 charismatic men, and industry will market whatever fandom is interested in because they want to make money.

Fandom twists itself explaining why their ship is the exception, but it is literally 99.9% Econ 101: supply and demand.

Larries ask, “Well then, why did they hide Larry?”

They didn’t. They literally marketed Larry next-to-you for MITAM promo, made Larry videos for MITAM early viewing (iicf), and marketed the rainbow bears. Perfect music video had Larry marketing. They’re still marketing Larry because it still sells.

Fans want to feel like special FBI agents defending closeted gay men, but all the Easter eggs were in front of us because it’s marketing.

This doesn’t mean anything about the guys’ real relationships or their sexuality. It just means that an industry machine will co-opt everything to sell.

Hi! Can I just ask - I’m a bit confused about Louis’ sexuality in ‘you were in my dream’? Because to me the beginning kind of made it sound like Harry was his sexual awakening and he only dated/slept with girls until then but then in the last chapter he actually thinks about his first boyfriend. So did he know he was bi(?) but just didn’t really act on it until he had the dream? Sorry for asking stupid questions😅 btw I loove the story and your writing so much <3

I had intended for Louis to be bisexual and to have known that since he was a teen. He had a boyfriend when he was a teen and the only real relationship(s) he’s ever had were with men. In my head, in the years between his first boyfriend and Harry he was just kind of seeing whoever (including Freddy, who is also bi). Which is why zayn calls him a slag in chap 1. I didn’t really mention his sexuality or go into detail as more of a choice based on Louis character in that story (he felt to me like someone who wouldn’t care to share that because it’s just not anyone’s business, if they know they know if they don’t then sucks for them), but I’m sorry for any confusion! Louis and Liam are both bi and Harry is gay in ywimd (ziall are???? I didn’t decide tbh haha. They are just in love) I hope this helps and if you have any other questions let me know!!

“Sharing The Scars” is gotta be my favorite work of yours. Partly because Ziall is my OTP, partly because of how well it’s written. It never fails to amaze me how much effort you put into your stories for us! Thank you sm and please keep it up!

i never have, but i’d be lying if i said i’m not open to it! i don’t actually ship outside of larry, so i kind of investigated ziam, ziall and niam pretty broadly, simply because none of them *appear* as a real relationship in my eyes, and all are featured rotationally as side ships in larry fics pretty regularly.
