- xie yu is a very, very good actor to have deceived the zhuos for two and a half decades. the fucking audacity of this man. jesus christ.
- on the other hand, meng zhi and xia dong standing together like a clique of bitchy mean girls was wonderful, thank you.

december 3rd.
“here.”
the words brushed against the wind as y/n stuck his arm out towards the boy -no, man- in front of him. he looked away, the trees that covered yu qing’s tennis courts giving him a protective barrier for his embarrassed self.
maybe the slight blush on his cheeks grew a little brighter because the sun beamed down on them, and maybe his heart began to beat a little faster since he finished his match with sweat dripping down his face. even with those factors, he knew that wasn’t the reason why.
it was the same reason it always was. zhuo zhi. it was always zhuo zhi.
zhuo zhi was the reason the sun burned in the middle of the day, the reason he served every ball to the other side of the court. he - and zhuo zhi alone - was the reason the world kept spinning.
“are you going to take it?”
y/n’s voice was a little louder, his arm becoming sore as he extended the object in his arm out a little further. it was a light blue sweater with navy blue flowers embroidered into the cuffs.
it wad pretty, different from the things y/n wore on a daily basis. instead of keeping it for himself on the cold winter day, he held it out to zhuo zhi.
zhuo zhi finally looked up from his spot on the court, eyes squeezing softly as they gazed upon their chosen god. “i don’t see why i need a sweater, i’m hot still.”
clenching his jaw shut, y/n’s eyes met with zhuo zhi’s. his heart refused to slow down, only beating faster with every second their eyes were together as one.
“please, just take it.”
the silence that hung over the courts as it slowly turned to evening was deafening, making y/n go insane. zhuo zhi broke the silence with a sigh as he stood up and readjusted his main player uniform.
“fine.” his fingers clasped around the cotton, hand skillfully and gracefully placing it over his shoulders. zhuo zhi looked even more handsome with it on, head held high as he continued to meet y/n’s gaze. “does this mean something special? or are you nice to me after all these years.”
“it means i love you zhuo zhi.”
the world returned to a silence that somehow increased the humidity of the air, each breath painful and thick as he waited for zhuo zhi to reply, to change in anyway.
zhuo zhi’s face broke into a soft smile, a small chuckle escaped his mouth as the wind cleared the tension. he hopped the net, his beloved racket clattering to the floor as he instead used that hand to grasp y/n’s.
that hand, full of callouses and rough skin, never felt so perfect in his palm.
“oh? so you’ve given me a sweater to say you love me. i take it now i’m supposed to repay you with a date?”
y/n smiled, punching zhuo zhi’s arm gently to get a reaction from the man. the birds chirped as zhuo zhi and y/n packed up, the blue sweater that covered zhuo zhi brushing against the bare skin of y/n’s arm.
“i expect this date to be amazing, zhuo zhi.” y/n almost grumbles, reluctant to admit his affections.
zhuo zhi refuses to answer, instead choosing to wrap his arm around y/n as they walked through the streets, each other the only thing the world could offer.
y/n proceeded to give zhuo zhi a sweater every december third to signify his undying love. because he loved him, and he always gave him cotton.

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Twenty-two
Events:
Liyang and Jingrui apologise to the Zhuo. They embrace Jingrui.
Liyang goes to her husband and suggests he commit suicide for the honor of the Xie family, but he wants to fight to the bitter end.
Prince Yu settles the Zhuo family in his manor.
MCS, Meng Zhi and Jingyan confer. They exposit at Meng Zhi to clarify the plot, saying that Prince Yu, after having met the Southern Yan prince and princess and noted the resemblance to Jingrui, arranged for them to go to the birthday party. Meng Zhi thinks it's a coincidence that Southern Yan were visiting at this time; Jingyan's not so sure.
The Emperor gives Prince Yu is given the task of investigating the Xie case. The Zhuos have confessed to everything.
At Prince Yu's suggestion, the Emperor spares Liyang and her children, because they are of imperial blood and for the sake of the Grand Dowager, who is ailing. Ordinarily they would be executed.
The Xie daughter dies in childbirth but the child lives. MCS has a fit when he learns but says his heart will get harder.
Xia Jiang is introduced. He grounds Xia Dong for getting involved at the birthday party.
Xia Jiang visits Xie Yu in prison and says if XY keeps his mouth shut about their old alliance, his life will be spared.
Jingyan does (offscreen) impressive stuff on a hunting trip with the Emperor and Southern Chu, and is rewarded. Courtiers try to visit him but he refuses their gifts.
Xie Yu has confessed to some things but not others, such as the eunuch killing, which is more serious because the eunuch was an envoy of the emperor.
Prince Yu and MCS discuss Xia Jiang's relationship with Xie Yu, and MCS suggests that maybe Xia Jiang is helping Xie Yu now because Xie Yu has done things for him in the past.
Characters
The Zhuo are okay with Jingrui in the aftermath but less so with Liyang.
The relationship between Liyang and her husband is very weird and I still don't understand it. She even says she'll kill herself to join him in the afterlife.
MCS looks relieved when the Zhuo forgive Jingrui.
Jingyan thinks this was all necessary to make a clean break between Jingrui and his father. Meng Zhi's not so sure; he's worrying about MCS's feelings. Jingyan is more concerned about MCS's physical wellbeing after the night he's had.
When Jingyan says something slightly critical of MCS, Meng Zhi jumps to defend him, and Jingyan looks startled. Afterwards, MCS scolds him, saying that a lowly strategist is not on the same level as a prince and a general (Meng Zhi is a general).
Xia Jiang gets introduced with very ominous music.
Xia Jiang teaches his disciples their job is to investigate for the Emperor, not to care about what the Emperor does afterwards. Justice is irrelevant.
The Emperor is very pleased to see Xia Jiang.
Xia Jiang has good instincts. He's been in the capital less than a day, but he already suspects there's someone behind Xie Yu's sudden comprehensive downfall.
Time & place
Liyang owns her own separate manor which she and her children will go and live in.
Southern Chu is peaceful except for skirmishes with somewhere called Mianyi.
The Xuanjing Bureau was founded by the first emperor of Da Liang.
Xie Qi dies 24 hours after the party. Xia Jiang arrives about a week later.

Ep 34-35: New Year Customs
The Spring Festival has a history of over four thousand years and is the biggest traditional festival in China.
.
New Year Paintings
.
Ming and Qing Dynasty Customs of the New Year Eve
According to the "Essence of Life: Food and Drink" in the book "Zhuo Zhong Zhi" from the Ming dynasty, on the 30th day of the last month, people visited each other and exchanged blessings. It's known as bidding the year farewell.
Hanging a peach wood board/peach charms next to the door, written on them the names of two door gods, Shen Shu and Yu Lu to suppress evil spirits.
Ashes of premium charcoals used in the palace are moulded into a pair of general statues with black faces and hands to work as door gods. In addition to Shen Shu and Yu Lu, Qin Qiong and Yuchi Jingde, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are all revered as door guardians by the folks.
Pictures of God of Happiness, the Ghost Judges, and Zhong Kui are also hung inside the house. People would hang gold and silver ornaments on the bed, as well as Xifan prayer wheels. They would also weave dragon figures with coins.
Eaves were hung with bundled sesame stalks. Children of common folks would step on the sesame stalks spread across the courtyard to crush them, symbolizing peace throughout the year.
Palace servants burned cypress branches in the courtyard to symbolize good things happen as wished, thus named "yusui."
Archaeological findings showed that delicacies resembling the shape of dumpling had appeared in China since the Spring and Autumn period, called the "laowan." The custom of eating dumplings during the Spring Festival in the northern region is said to commemorate Zhang Zhongjing, the Medical Saint of the Eastern Han dynasty, and has existed for over 1,800 years. On the first day of the lunar year, a type of boiled delicacy called "bian shi" enjoyed by emperors of the Ming dynasty and the "zhu bo bo" in the palace of the Qing dynasty are all dumplings.
Unlike the Ming dynasty, it is said that Emperor Taizu of Qing established a family rule that the emperor must eat vegetarian dumplings on the first day of the Lunar New Year to honour the innocent lives lost in wars. In the book "Celebrate the Spring Festival in the Forbidden City" it's said that vegetarian dumplings in the Qing palace were mainly filled with dried vegetables, including little hogweed, citron daylily, jelly ears, mushrooms, sliced bamboo shoots, and seitan. According to other research materials, dried tofu and eggs were also included. They had to be wrapped before midnight on New Year's Eve and boiled after midnight so they may be ready for the New Year.
Only in the 11th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign) did the book "Shan Shi Dang" mention pork and purslane were consumed on New Year's Day and that pork and spinach were used as dumpling filling.

The Lantern Carnival
An ancient traditional folk custom in China, legend has it that Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty held a lamp-lighting ceremony in Sichuan 1,800 years ago from now, and it is the archetype of China's original lantern carnival. Of all lantern carnivals in China, the most grandiose is the one held at the Lantern Festival. In the records about the Sui dynasty in the "Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance", Emperor Yang of Sui set a place for around a hundred kinds of performance at Duanmen Street in a 5,000-step radius of the place, almost 18,000 musicians were playing instruments. The sound of music could be heard from dozens of Li away. The event lasted from dusk until dawn, with large amounts of candles and lights illuminating the night sky. The festival lasted for an entire month and cost a significant amount of money.
It can be said that the Lantern Festival has been a national celebration in China since ancient times. Not only were there colorful lights and lanterns on the streets and hills, but also brilliant performances with singing, dancing, and various shows and talents, bustling with crowds all night long until drawn.
Today, with the integration of local folk culture and customs, lantern carnivals have become even bigger in scale and more diverse in form.
.
Some more misc stuff:
Lantern riddles
Poems, puns, and acrostics with amusing gags, brain teasers are inserted in the silhouette of the silk lanterns.
Fried Lightly-Leavened Mantou
A traditional dish and a seasonal snack in Jiangsu, small in size.
Sugar painting
The art has over 400 years of history and is popular with children. The late Ming literary scholar Chu Renhuo's "Jianhu Supplementary Collection" records sugar paintings, or "Sugar Prime Minister", being made and used as offerings to the deities during the Ming dynasty.
See here:

.
Soup made of Prickly Water Lily, also known as Gorgon fruit
Chinese puppetry
Originated in the Qin and Han dynasties., it was a form of Han Chinese puppetry. Most of the string puppets in Quanzhou, Fujian are about 2.2 Chi in length. They are beautifully crafted and vividly made. They are pulled by 30 or more suspended strings or wires and require a high level of skill in handling. It is one of China's most difficult traditional puppet shows.
Paper cutting
One of the oldest folk arts of the Han Chinese. The art of paper-cutting was included on the first national list of intangible cultural heritage by the State Council in May 2006. In September 2009, it was listed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Shadow play
Chinese shadow play began in Han and flourished in Tang. Plain paper was used in the early Song dynasty, and later on, lustrous sheepskin was adopted. In the Yuan dynasty, shadow puppetry spread overseas. Later generations used animal skins and cardboard to make shadow puppets, which were manipulated behind a curtain with percussion and string instruments to perform a variety of shows based on legends and folklore.
Suzhou-style Wonton
Suzhou-style Pan Fried Buns are known for its thin skin that wouldn't break or burnt. Baked after lightly leavened, full of fresh and juicy filling and soup, soft on the top and crispy on the bottom.

Everytime I watch Ryoma vs Yuuta's match, I keep thinking about them really hard, you know?
I mean, in the beginning, Yuuta's obsessed with defeating Syusuke: he has an older brother that is a genius in tennis and people keep comparing them, belittling Yuuta, never really acknowledge him as anything other than Fuji's little brother.
And then, I think about Ryoma, who was also obsessed about defeating his father. Ryoma lives in Nanjiro's shadow in a way that even Yuuta can't understand. For the longest time, his father was his only goal and Ryoma's been playing tennis since he could hold a racket. Nanjiro's famous all around the world, and if anyone knew he and Ryoma were related, they would think that's why he's good at tennis, or that Ryoma isn't good, it's just Nanjiro's influence that got him so far, or they wouldn't stop comparing them.
An example of that: when he went with Sakuno to fix her racket and the guy basically told him to grow up and stop acting like a kid, to be more like Nanjiro and blah-blah-blah, but Ryoma only replied as "I am a kid, I'll do what I want, I'm not my father".
I'm sure Yuuta and Ryoma would bond over that, over always being under their family's shadow, never being acknowledged as good enough by themselves.
By the time they had that match, Ryoma had already understood that his father couldn't be his only goal.
Not only that, but Ryoma also reacts to those things in a different way. Yuuta feels hurt, and maybe even a little bit jealous, whenever people talk about him as Fuji's little brother.
Ryoma doesn't feel hurt, he knows his father is a great tennis player (the best), even if he is just so dumb outside of a court. And, above that, he doesn't feel insecure, like Yuuta does. He feels challenged. Whenever people bring Nanjiro and his relationship with Ryoma, all he hears is "prove me that you are not under your father's shadow" and he proceeds to do exactly that.
So, when he looked at Yuuta and saw how angry he was, how hard he tried, Ryoma decided to be the one to show Yuuta that his brother shouldn't be his only goal either ("You only want to be as good as your brother, I want to be the best").
Even if he's the youngest, Ryoma would be the one that always acknowledged Yuuta for himself, that looks at Yuuta as Yuuta, not Fuji's little brother and that motivates Yuuta to go higher and higher.
And, of course, Yuuta would return the favor. Because, even if Ryoma acts more maturely than Yuuta when it comes to this (not because he doesn't get as affected, but because he got used to it, because he's been exposed to it for longer and because he's inherently not a jealous person), he can get annoyed occasionally.
In short, Yuuta and Ryoma are besties who bonded over their obsession with defeating family members, and who understand each other deeply.

Oh the same friend I mentioned earlier has gone on a FaceApp spree and I'm equal parts terrified (uncanny valley!!), cracking up and suddenly very interested in an AU... Under a cut for length, but here's Lu Xia, who's pretty much Lu Xia with longer hair tbh
Baiyang is literally just... Baiyang wearing makeup. Which isn't something I expected to see in my lifetime.

Parallels: Mu Siyang vs His Closest Teammates Worrying About His Arm
EP 9 At this point Mu Siyang (Tezuka) was kind of given some clearance from his doctor and was told that as long as he keeps his training light, then his rehabilitation would go well. Chi Dayong (Oishi, Vice Captain), who at this point is always the one who accompanies him to the doctor, worries for him and hopes for him to take it easy and not push himself too hard. Mu Siyang here insists that everything is fine and there is nothing to worry about, thus cutting Chi Dayong off from questioning him and his decisions about his arm any further.
EP 33 This was the aftermath of the private match between Mu Siyang (Tezuka) and Zhuo Zhi (Fuji) right before the vs. Xing Yao (Hyotei) matches. At this point Mu Siyang has already tested Echizen in a match and also played a few tournament matches. His injury was reaggravated as evidence by him not being able to play at his fullest against Zhuo Zhi. Zhuo Zhi demands for him to stop with his resolve. Unlike Siyang's reaction to Chi Dayong, the former actually placates Zhuo Zhi by offering him a compromise, that Siyang would end the match against Ji Jingwu (Atobe) after the first 30 minutes of play. Zhuo Zhi reluctantly agrees with this and promises to keep the injury a secret.
To me its fascinating that Chi Dayong was the one whom Siyang actually confided about his injury at first. Later on, Zhuo Zhi finds out more about his injury and slowly steps in (in the wake of the troubles continuing to brew and simmer between the doubles of the Golden Partners). Since Dayong was still busy with his and Tang Jiale's (Kikumaru) problems, Zhuo Zhi eventually assigns himself to be Siyang's main confidant about the injury.
The shift in team dynamics is interesting.
it was stlll heartbreaking to watch though

Listen. This match was cathartic in the anime for me. Not only Fuji was always my favorite character, Kirihara had been a dumbass kid 99% of the time at this point, he had physically harmed several players including Yuta aka Little Fuji and Rikkai was winning, they needed to win this match. And yes, it was one of the most entertaining matches in the series objectively (probably why it’s been remastered) but also it was SO cathartic in so many levels that Fuji just annihilated him. You grow to like Rikkai later on but man, I wanted them dead at this time.
Chinapuri delivered 10000% and their cast was so well picked, I can’t even describe it. I wish they do a season for Nationals because this is just *chef’s kiss* prime tenipuri content.

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Twenty-One
Events:
Gong Yu tells the rest of her story. Apparently her father was quite happy to kill one baby, but balked at killing the second. The family went on the run and the father was killed 3 years later by Xie Yu's people.
Liyang watched over Jingrui 24/7 for the first few years to prevent Xie Yu killing him. After that the Zhuo family became so useful that he was safe.
Xie Yu has called out the Capital Patrol, who are under his command, but they can't enter the manor for legal reasons. They can block Prince Yu though.
Xie Bi threatens suicide to attempt to talk his father out of killing the Zhuo family. Xie Yu calls his bluff.
The Zhuo family fight the guards. Jingrui joins them. Niannian joins in but the prince doesn't, because he'd earlier (last episode) promised Xie Yu not to interfere. Yujin joins in to protect Gong Yu. Yue Niuze joins in. Meng Zhi holds back at first, then can't help himself.
Xia Dong sets off a flare that gives Prince Yu an excuse to act.
MCS leads everyone through a special door that leads to the family shrine. They go out onto a lakehouse. Meng Zhi and Yue Niuze guard the bridge as a chokepoint. More archers are sent for.
Prince Yu can't talk his way past the Capital Patrol, but Yan Que (Yujin's father) shows up. That gets Xie Yu out there to deal with them personally.
Gong Yu offers herself up for the Zhuo's vengeance, since her father killed their son. Zhuo-furen declines.
Archers start shooting at the lakehouse.
Liyang interrupts the stand-off outside and threatens suicide if Xie Yu doesn't let people in. Unlike with his son, Xie Yu takes this seriously. The shooting stops and it's all over.
Liyang extracts a promise from Prince Yu (at knifepoint!) that he will never harm the Zhuo family.
Names and titles:
Zhuo-furen calls her husband fujun, which at first I mistook for fuqin.
Xie Yu refers to his daughter as daxiaojie.
Xia Dong calls MCS dacai (great talent) in an unfriendly way.
Master Zhuo calls MCS Mei-zongzhu.
Prince Yu calls Liyang gumu, and she calls him Jinghuan (his given name, Yu is his title).
Characters:
MCS shows a very unpleasant side of himself tonight. He's almost vicious when talking with Xie Yu. No one present can doubt that he's a very dangerous man. Xia Dong certainly doesn't; she's disgusted, but they agree not to interfere with each other.
Xie Yu calls Xie Bi, his son and heir, weak for not being instantly willing to see the Zhuo family dead.
Prince Yu was getting nowhere trying to talk his way into the manor. Then Yan Que turned up and everything changed. Prince Yu was no longer in charge and didn't even notice, he was just pleased he was suddenly winning.
All Prince Yu could do was wave his army about. Yan Que just walked up some steps and it was more threatening than anything Prince Yu did.
Liyang hates Prince Yu, but she believes he'll be the next Emperor.
Meng Zhi is shocked and horrified that Xie Yu would dare use the Capital Patrols for his own private business.
Gong Yu is about four months younger than Jingrui.
Gong Yu's father was in an assassins' guild.
The chief of the Capital Patrol is called Ouyang Chi.
MCS was scared when the shooting started.
Misc:
Archers are the real danger. High level martial artists can catch or deflect arrows to a certain extent, but they're scared of archers more than hundreds of armed and armoured soldiers.
How did MCS know about the special door leading to the family shrine?
