He saw himself in Zhao Yuanzhou’s manor again, veiled in hazy sunlight and falling petals. Laughter rang in the distance, mixing with the clinking of wine jars and a soft tinkle of bells, but he stood by the empty swing. Zhao Yuanzhou gripped the rope and pushed it slowly, carrying a rare weight of somberness; Zhuo Yichen wanted to scoop the feeling into his hands and crush it into dust.
Let’s go eat with the others, he wanted to say. You haven’t seen them for a long time. Doesn’t it hurt to have such a long dream all alone? Is it better there than it would be with me?

tumblr user heavenslittlemachine what books rewired your brain chemistry? :0
ooh i rly like this one...long answer. more recently over the past ~2 years or so there's been a pretty foundational rewiring that was instigated more by personal experience & then catalyzed by book-reading -- i had a bunch of chronic health problems that got way better after i started getting regular acupuncture treatments, so my initial impulse was to ofc figure out how & why it worked. reading a bunch of contemporary acu books reorganized some stuff but couldn't rly touch on the deeper theoretical level. so then digging in to medical classics like the huangdi neijing, that one was & still is hitting pretty regularly. i like the kinds of books where u can keep reading them over and over & new layers of meaning keep developing, different angles become illuminated etc. reading medical classics was doing a lot for me but i wasn't rly grasping the broader context Or the deeper levels -- reading the daodejing & then the zhuangzi was and still is a wide blast for those. there's always more 2 understand with those guys. later alchemical stuff did a number on me, the zhouyi cantong qi in particular is a mindfuck but also to rly grasp that one u have to dig in to the yijing (i ching). there are some layers of cosmology there....
then ofc there's the bible which is a similar sort of experience. i was changed fundamentally by that whole deal against my will when i was little but coming back to it on my own terms with my own extractive technologies has been a really beautiful experience. related to that one but in the fictional world is go tell it on the mountain by james baldwin.
reading fanon's wretched of the earth and then nkrumah's neocolonialism then consciencism in that order was like a landslide moment in my understanding of colonialism/imperialism/capitalism fundamentally while also rounding out in both a material and existential way this idea of What Is To Be Done. also in the fictional world one that feels related to these is leslie marmon silko's almanac of the dead. the concept of the christian god dying during the colonization of the americas. the thing about "days, months, years, eons are alive, they walk around the universe and then come back." the phrase "death-eye dog epoch."
noopiming by leanne betasamosake simpson was not necessarily like "revolutionary" in the same way as some other books here but it gave me an incredibly important grip on things during the early pandemic when everything was feeling spiraling deeply out of control. i was like everything will b fine if i just live like akiwenzii. wake up when the sun comes up and go to bed when the sun goes down. ok!
also when i was little i read this book i forget the name, it was about these people who could see little fairy or implike creatures who were invisible to most & they would swarm people who were about to die / eat from them as they were dying. so the assumption was that they caused accidents etc. and the main characters hunted and captured these creatures. but eventually u find out (spoiler!) that the imps are actually benevolent and can just sense when ppl are gonna die, they do feed on wounds but it doesn't hurt ppl and has some kind of analgesic effect. and then it turns out that their boss knew this and had been harvesting them to power some kind of device for nefarious purposes. that one was important too i think. the picture of dorian grey when i was still nebulously bisexual in high school. the twilight series when i was still a jehovahs witness. everything has its place and time...

Under [Shu Jun’s] watchful eye, Zhouyi didn't dare to attack Ai Xiaoxiao. It focused its efforts in a different direction — Zhouyi once again absorbed water, fighting its way out of the cloth covering it, and puddled in a slippery lump on the ground, clinging to the floorboards for dear life. During the entire process, its hoarse yelling never stopped. Ai Xiaoxiao was unimpressed by the noise; she harrumphed, then retrieved a shovel from a nearby tool closet and briskly started shoveling Zhouyi. "Your sword has quite the personality," she remarked blandly to Shu Jun while shoving Zhouyi into a quarantine bucket. Zhouyi, seeing that its tantrum was ineffective, began shivering in the bucket. It rattled along the floorboards. Shu Jun: "......" Why was there a metal shovel in a medical clinic? But having witnessed Ai Xiaoxiao's exceptional skill with the shovel, he didn't dare ask.
the food chain: terrible corrosive bog toddler sword —> fearsome bog monster warrior —> one (1) lesbian medical researcher
#(corrosive) bog days of summer#I love semi-sentient sword antics SO much#and monday is extra fun because unlike other semi-sentient swords#this one is actually just. an absolute monster. the worst. kinda cute despite all of that

Fic writing - 11, 22, 24, 60, 65
11. Link your three favorite fics right now
Dormant by @antennapedia - Listen, the age I am now sees all the red flags of shipping Buffy and Giles, but in like 2008, this pairing was my JAM. It wasn’t even Buffy and Giles, per se, it was the concept of the watcher/slayer relationship. The destiny of it all. And antennapedia was the queen of that. She scratches that itch for me so perfectly.
It’s hard to choose my favorite stargate fic, but I know Bird Stealing Bread by surreallis is always high on the list. It’s the ultimate we want to and we shouldn’t, but then they do and wow, they really shouldn’t have. Just the vibes are so vibey in this one. I read it over a decade ago and I still think about it.
Laws of Motion by dayspassquicker (@zhouyi). When a fic is this short, every word has to be perfect and every word of this is.
22. Are there certain types of writing you won’t do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)
First person. I can’t. I shan’t. I don’t even like to read novels in first person. It’s not BAD, it’s just not for me.
24. Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?
IDK if anyone has ever given me writing advice that I loved or hated enough to be memorable, but I think the worst writing advice in terms of fanfic is to hold your next chapter or work hostage until you get a certain number of comments or kudos. Nothing will make me DNF faster than that.
60. Have you had a writer you admire comment on your fic? What was that like?
Yesssss and it’s so nice. I’ve had that happen, I’ve made real life friends with people in my comments, I’ve had people write fic based on my fic and tell me in the comments. The comments are a magical wonderland and the good has always outweighed the not so good for me, I feel very fortunate.
65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
I look forward to finishing this WIP I’ve been working on for - *checks notes* - 2 years, 9 months, 1 week, and five days. Reading that does make me want to lie down in the road, but I was already like six months into the story when I signed on to publish Honey in the Marrow, and time only got tighter from there. Also, it’s going to be 30 chapters and is sitting at a cool 139,615 words, so you can’t say that I haven’t been writing it. I’ve been writing it 139 thousand words amount. I have like some? Half? of the last chapter written. ANYWAY looking forward to that.
My next book comes out in the beginning of 2024, really looking forward to that. And then maybe I get to start something new, IDK?? Sky’s the limit.
Thank you!

SO IMAGINE THIS:
It’s the ‘90s. You’re 12 years old. A few very important things have roared into your life alongside puberty, namely a sudden obsession with Star Trek: The Next Generation and (in the form of those free AOL dial-up floppy disks) The Internet.
Most especially you develop a lot of funny feelings about these two jokers and their will-they-won’t-they UST. One thing leads to another and you join a mailing list for Picard/Crusher ‘shippers and meet none other than @zhouyi.
You also discover Usenet and alt.startrek.creative, which introduces you to ✨fanfiction✨. Which you spend the next several decades producing and consuming voraciously.
Fast forward 20, 30 years or so and what gets rebooted? YOUR SHOW. In the final season, Star Trek: Picard has brought back the ENTIRE TNG cast plus a ton of heartstopping cameos from infamous guest stars and your tiny adolescent heart is EXPLODING with every new episode.
And what’s at the heart of this entire season, this whole reunion, the plot that everything hangs on? THESE TWO. DR. BEVERLY CRUSHER. CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD. MY ONCE AND FUTURE PAIRING, THE ‘SHIP THAT LAUNCHED IT ALL. Is this real life?!?! Is this truly happening??????
(Also omg, Riker was NOT joking with that line hahaha holy shit, I could’ve named a few of these moments off the top of my head, but this is a WHOLE LOT of him ‘shipping them not at all subtly with that big cheesy grin. Why don’t you go play a trombone about it, Will. You probably get just how I feel. It’s a big year for both of us.)
May you all live to see such wonders. May your middle school OTP become glorious canon when you are 40 goddamn years old.
Picard/Crusher
Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Trek: Picard Star Trek: Insurrection
#trek#bonc#tng#this fandom life#dreams do come true?!?#just screaming and dying in perpetuity#LET ME SAVE MY THOUGHTS ON JACK CRUSHER FOR ANOTHER POST OR TWO… THOUSAND#even the way he phrases that line#is so goofy and knucklebitey at once#the old riker charm#he looks at Jack the way I look at Jack#the way I look at this whole show

The eight doors are not made up! (Not by the authors at least!) That’s a real concept in Taoism! You know those stripes on the Korean flag? That’s ba-gua. And (I’m not up on the details) the eight doors concept derived from that and comes from Zhouyi, which is the defining text for divination written some 2500 years ago.
Death door is #2 and life door is #8. These concepts are used quite frequently in old Chinese classics like Romance of the Three Kingdoms when they talk about troop formations.
thank you for your answer.
i did watch the yin yang master movies a couple of months ago. i remember the discourse when people called it 'xianxia'.
im actually familiar with the five phases! It came up in a korean novel that uses elements from various mythology, this particular thing in relation to a mythological exorcist. i considered that i might have mistaken it for that but i didn't think so.
another thing that feels similar to pentagrams is the '8 gates' (2 of which were life and death but I don't remember the rest?) i read in a xianxia novel, tho the writers could have made that up for the plot heh.
--
Oh, that's interesting!
I know I whined about people not understanding my little fandom, but I didn't realize "It's not xianxia! AAAAAAH!" was more widespread than that.
I even had a Chinese-speaking friend go snoop around in Chinese fan discussions to make sure they all thought DoE was set in Japan and I wasn't insane.
The big issue is that onmyoudou/onmyouji canons are still historical fantasy, they're heavily daoist, and they're from an era of Japanese history when the aesthetics often look pretty Chinese to a modern eye. All that samurai and zen rock garden minimalism stuff shows up centuries later. This is full on penis hat-wearing, blinged out Heian period.
(One of my favorite things about historical costume dramas is how dumb historical hats look. I love them so much.)
The Heian period was basically trying to rip off Tang Dynasty China super hard, and a lot of Chinese fantasy uses Tang Dynasty shit too. Not to mention all of the "real" esoteric shit and traditional medicine and such is going to look the same even in a modern Chinese media that isn't overtly magical.
So if you're coming to Dream of Eternity or the other YYM based on the video game from being an Untamed fan or whatever, it's extremely non-obvious what's going on here.
Dream of Eternity in particular is in conversation with the two Japanese movie adaptations of Yumemakura's novels. Things like the sexy exorcism are drawn directly from there. I read some translated interviews where they straight up said they were referencing them a lot.
There are obviously both dragons and big snakes in Chinese mythology. However, my impression is that DoE was trying to reference Yamata no Orochi, though not very directly. The princess is pretty clearly Yao Bikuni. Qingming (Seimei) has shikigami, including a tengu. The thing with the demon playing a lute is a classic Japanese story that takes place at the Rashomon gate.
It's not like you couldn't have infinite stories about demons stealing important Asian-style lutes set in China. It's just that if you're familiar with the rest of this franchise and with historical Japanese writings, you recognize that story as coming straight from the Konjaku Monogatarishuu.
