I'd say the level of upset I feel over losing all of the guest players after ep 64 is a good indication for how much these episodes slayed. What a banger of an arc! :')
#critical role#I teared up on every single FRIDA goodbye because they were all so genuine and sweet#These characters feel like Kash and Zhara in that they will be a core part of this story for the rest of the campaign#I'd actually love to see an episode of the loresonists <3#Because all of their individual arcs are really only beginning

Well, that was a nice series of gut punches. Thanks Legend of Vox Machina. :)
They take some pretty big swings in the changes in the adaptation for episodes 7-9 but I find them quite interesting. It continues the trend of reinforcing that this is its own story, inspired by the campaign but with a separate canon.
Very, very curious to see where they are going with Pike based on what happened in these episodes.
I kinda like making Percy's death at Glintshore more, seemingly, permanent. And by having Ripley get away, that implies they have her lined up to cause more mayhem down the road, which I'm not opposed to at all. She's a more interesting character in the animation I think, and her motivations are clearer than they were in the campaign. The backstory we got of her only reinforce how much of a dark mirror to Percy she is, and how they took different paths. Like Cadeuces famously said to Trent Ikithon "It's love that saves people, the pain is inconsequential". (Sidenote, now I kinda want an AU where Ripley meets the Mighty Nein rather than Vox Machina. Between Caleb and Jester she would end up very different I think.) The gathering of forces for the siege of Emon was suitably inspiring, and Vex'ahlia's conversation with Syldor was very satisfying. It both highlights how animation Vex is different from campaign Vex, but also their similarities.
In some ways not having Percy present for the siege and the fight against Thordak felt off, but that was probably intentional because you can feel his absence in the team too. They are focused and dedicated to succeed, but there's something missing.
Killing off Kashaw was a blow that hurt more than I expected. I loved him and Zhara in the campaign, and though a resurrection in the animation is still possible I will not count on it. He did go out with a bang though, I'll give him that. And I still have my happy ending for Zhara and Kashaw in the campaign, regardless of what happens in the animation.
I think these three last episodes in particular has highlighted something that's been in the back of my mind for a while. I love the animation, it's one of the best tv series I've seen, but I still like the campaign more. Partly because the story and the interpersonal relationships has more time to grow, partially because it's also shows the friendship between the players as well as the characters and that can't really be translated to a different medium.
In the end though, I suppose I have my answer to the question "would you still love me if I was a worm?". Yes, Vox Machina, I still love you even though you're different now. :)

RWRB hcs probably pt. 1-
•After they get married everyone (mostly June and Nora) started calling Alex princess. Like, "shut up, princess"
•Henry has read MANY fanfics and written several of his own. This includes a secret five chapter story about him and Alex that stays hidden in the depths of his computer
•I know Taylor Swift is a controversial topic in this fandom, but you cannot tell me Henry "queer historian, writer, and dramatic gay boy" would not jam out to and cry over ts songs alone in his room
•David loves cuddling with Alex, and Henry calls him a traitor, but really he finds it adorable
•Alex has definitely brought some feral animal home that he found on the street hoping to save it and raise it as a pet, and then Henry made him give it to the shelter and he cried all night
•June and Nora get a cat. That's it. They're just cat moms
•When Pez, June, and Nora are all in the same place, they are most likely gonna sleep together
•Phillip gets better and he and Henry are able to work on mending their relationship after Mary dies and neither of them have to deal with her manipulation and abuse
•Alex posts lots of thirst traps, and Henry dies every time
•Alex calls Henry lots of pet names I'm Spanish, and also just in general talks to him a lot in Spanish. Henry has very low understanding of what Alex is saying for the first couple years, but he still melts
•Henry eventually tries to learn Spanish and after a while he can carry a conversation. Oscar often makes fun of his pronunciation though
•Alex is an apple user Henry is an android user. They argue about it often
•Alex's shit got rocked when Hamilton came out. He saw it 10 times
•They continue to have a New Year's party for several years after Ellen leaves office.
•They have a daughter and a son, the son is Henry and June's biologically, and the daughter's Alex and Bea's biologically. Both are referred to as aunt though. Also they used IVF not sex, just to be clear.
•When Alex turns 35, a petition is spread around social media trying to get him to run for president. It gets double the needed signatures, but he doesn't end up running.
•Alex usually tops, but not always. Henry is usually more dominant though.
•I know in cannon Bea gets married to someone (presumably a man) but I hc that she's also gay and meets a girl whose picking her friend up from and na meeting. (Idk, I have a whole story set out for Bea's love life)
•Not really a hc, but Henry has def ridden Alex while wearing a cowboy hat
•Pez always buys the children of the super six super lavish and expensive gifts when ever he visits, and becomes the favorite of the aunts and uncles
•After their first fight once married, Alex has a huge panic attack thinking they won't make it together, but Henry calms him down and it doesn't happen again
•Zhara and Shaan have a daughter who is the scariest little girl in the world. Alex is legitimately scared to get on her bad side.
•David has his own insta account and he has many photos in little outfits
•Henry and Alex write letters to each other every time one of them has to go somewhere for work, just for old times sake
•Henry's first novel absolutely kills all the queer teens, and is basically that universe's RWRB
•Alex often steals Henry's Jaffa cakes and won't ever admit it. Henry knows, and he finds it adorable
•Ever so often Alex will get super into some new topic and do loads of research, and write essays or make presentations on it and then share it with Henry so he can teach him everything he now knows.
•Lowkey canon, but Henry's a Maurauders era fan
•He's also a Tumblr girly and has had a secret blog for years
•The super six do slideshow nights, here's an example of one of those nights: Henry: People from History You Didn't Know Where Queer, Nora: The Statistical Likelihood of Each of Us Releasing a Rap Album, Pez: Rating Everyone's Exes, Bea: The Most Embarrassing Stories About Henry I Can Think of, Alex: Hottest Politicians Around the World, June: The Most Embarrassing Stories About Alex I Can Think of (Her and Bea worked together)
•Occasionally Henry will use an American term (like saying chips when he meant crisps) and Alex will use a British term (like jumper instead of sweater), and both get very upset when it happens (whoever didn't slip up finds it hilarious)
•They joke around whenever a gossip site releases an article about their relationship, like, "oh look, I've apparently left you and headed back to England after you cheated on me" "oh, good for you, that was a rude thing for me to do"

OKAY it's late so we're going to be as efficient as humanly possible here. I've spent pretty similar amounts of time this week writing in Finally (already, always) and As yet unnamed Red White and Royal Blue Soulmates BS (BS stands for Brilliant Shit, btw: I am obsessed with my soulmates concept), so you're going to get some of each!
Two mums
(Simon POV. There is no Baz POV in this story, FYI, so it's going to be SImon from here on out)
We don't even have to sneak out. We just take the keys off of the hook next to the front door and walk right out into the night. It's lovely. On our way to the nearest park, we walk past a community building where a choir is rehearsing, and then further into a bike-walkway. It's lined with trees, and when we get to an area where the zigging of a street gives the pathway a deeper tree cover, Baz tells me to wait under a light and walks determinedly into the trees. I can see him moving in the shadows. Not, you know, perfectly, but if I look into the trees, there's still a bit of light coming through from the other side. If I let my mind wander, I can sometimes see a too-fast movement or a flicker of a shape that I know in my bones is him. Then there's a long moment of stillness. I wonder what he's found.
RWRB Soulmate BS
(Just diving right into the "if I'm writing a soulmate fic, you better believe it's going to go hard in worldbuilding" of it all right off the bat.)
"I'm not an idiot Nora," Alex says exasperatedly. He swears sometimes she says stuff just so he can shout about it. "They rely so heavily on the idea that their empire was ordained by Divine Right because they've been exclusively letting their children marry their 'soulmates' since the beginning of time, and if those children's 'soulmates' happened to help them expand the reach of their power, then that was just God's will." Alex takes a deep breath. "Why would they ever give that up?" Nora sends a half-shrug his way, and June pats his shoulder. "You'll just have to hold your breath against the hypocrisy, little bro," June says. "Especially because I'm pretty sure Zhara is going to forbid you from more than a polite sip of champagne." "Don't I motherfucking know it," he says.

New Releases - Week of August 6, 2024
We found quite a few books being released this week and they seem to be full to the brim with magic and supernatural activity.
Ami (Guardians of Dawn #2) by S. Jae-Jones Wednesday Books
When the Pillar blooms, the end of the world is not far behind.
Li Ami was always on the outside—outside of family, outside of friendships, outside of ordinary magic. The odd and eccentric daughter of a former imperial magician, she has devoted her life to books because she finds them easier to read than people. Exiled to the outermost west of the Morning Realms, Ami has become the sole caretaker of her mentally ill father, whose rantings and ravings may be more than mere ramblings; they may be part of a dire prophecy. When her father is arrested for trespassing and stealing a branch from the sacred tree of the local monastery, Ami offers herself to the mysterious Beast in the castle, who is in need of someone who can translate a forbidden magical text and find a cure for the mysterious blight that is affecting the harvest of the land.
Meanwhile, as signs of magical corruption arise throughout the Morning Realms, Jin Zhara begins to realize that she might be out of her element. She may have defeated a demon lord and uncovered her identity as the Guardian of Fire, but she’ll be more than outmatched in the coming elemental battle against the Mother of Ten Thousand Demons…unless she can find the other Guardians of Dawn. Her magic is no match for the growing tide of undead, and she needs the Guardian of Wood with power over life and death in order to defeat the revenants razing the countryside.
The threat of the Mother of Ten Thousand Demons looms larger by the day, and the tenuous peace holding the Morning Realms together is beginning to unravel. Ami and Zhara must journey to the Root of the World in order to seal the demon portal that may have opened there and restore balance to an increasingly chaotic world.
Dance of the Starlit Sea by Kiana Krystle Peachtree Teen
Lila Rose Li arrives at her aunt’s cottage with dashed dreams. For years, she pushed herself to become the perfect ballerina her parents would approve of, but after collapsing on stage, she snapped and lashed out violently. Now, exiled to Luna Island, with its sparkling blue waters and rose-covered boutiques, Lila struggles to believe that a girl like her—a natural disaster—deserves good and gentle things.
As the islanders gear up for their beloved tradition, the Angel of the Sea pageant, Lila vows to remain on the sidelines. But the more she learns about the island’s lore, the more she grows suspicious. Luna Island was nothing more than a failed fishing village before angels supposedly came and blessed them with abundance. The pageant is a competition to seek a High Priestess for their commune. To win is to be loved and adored by all, the ultimate blessing.
However, the Angel of the Sea is supposed to reign for seven years, and the previous winner only reigned for one. Something is haunting the island, throwing off the balance the pageant ensures. And as an eerie voice calls to Lila, drawing her closer to the ocean—to its depths—she worries its haunting her, too. The only way to discover what’s really going on, and protect herself, is to win the pageant. But how can a monstrous girl like her ever hope to be crowned by angels?
Kiana Krystle’s enchanting debut simmers with forbidden romance and dark secrets. A lush and sinister blend of paranormal mystery and mythology, wrapped up in fairytale about a teen girl’s hard-earned journey toward loving every part of herself.
The Girl with No Reflection by Keshe Chow Delacorte Press
Princess Ying Yue believed in love … once upon a time.
Yet when she’s chosen to wed the crown prince, Ying’s dreams of a fairy tale marriage quickly fall apart. Her husband-to-be is cold and indifferent, confining Ying to her room for reasons he won’t explain. Worse still are the rumors that swirl around the imperial palace: whispers of seven other royal brides who, after their own weddings, mysteriously disappeared.
Left alone with only her own reflection for company, Ying begins to see things. Strange things. Movements in the corners of her mirror. Colorful lights upon its surface. And when, on the eve of her wedding, she unwittingly tears open a gateway, she is pulled into a mirror world.
This realm is full of sentient reflections, including the enigmatic Mirror Prince. Unlike his real-world counterpart, the Mirror Prince is kind and compassionate, and before long Ying falls in love—the kind of love she always dreamed of.
But there is darkness in this new world, too.
It turns out the two worlds have a long and blood-soaked history, and Ying has a part to play in the future of them both. And the brides who came before Ying? By the time they discovered what their role was, it was already too late.
This Ravenous Fate by Hayley Dennings Sourcebooks Fire
The first book in a decadent fantasy duology set in Jazz Age Harlem, where at night the dance halls come to life—and death waits in the dark.
It’s 1926 and reapers, the once-human vampires with a terrifying affliction, are on the rise in New York. But the Saint family’s thriving reaper-hunting enterprise holds reign over the city, giving them more power than even the organized criminals who run the nightclubs. Eighteen year-old Elise Saint, home after five years in Paris, is the reluctant heir to the empire. Only one thing weighs heavier on Elise’s mind than her family obligations: the knowledge that the Harlem reapers want her dead.
Layla Quinn is a young reaper haunted by her past. Though reapers have existed in America for three centuries, created by New World atrocities and cruel experiments, Layla became one just five years ago. The night she was turned, she lost her parents, the protection of the Saints, and her humanity, and she’ll never forget how Elise Saint betrayed her.
But some reapers are inexplicably turning part human again, leaving a wake of mysterious and brutal killings. When Layla is framed for one of these attacks, the Saint patriarch offers her a deal she can’t refuse: to work with Elise to investigate how these murders might be linked to shocking rumors of a reaper cure. Once close friends, now bitter enemies, Elise and Layla explore the city’s underworld, confronting their intense feelings for one another and uncovering the sinister truths about a growing threat to reapers and humans alike.
The House Where Death Lives edited by Alex Brown Page Street YA
A dance to the death. A girl who’s just as monstrous as H.H. Holmes. A hallway that’s constantly changing―and hungry. All of these stories exist in the same place―within the frame of a particular house that isn’t bound by the laws of time and space.
Following in the footsteps of dark/horror-filled YA anthologies like His Hideous Heart and Slasher Girls and Monster Boys, and Netflix’s groundbreaking adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House, this YA speculative fiction anthology explores how the permanence of a home can become a space of transition and change for both the inhabitants and the creatures who haunt them.
Each story in the anthology will focus on a different room in the house and feature unique takes on monsters from a wide array of cultural traditions. Whether it’s a demonic Trickster, a water-loving Rusalka, or a horrifying, baby-imitating Tiyanak, there’s bound to be something sinister lurking in the shadows.
Hovergirls by Geneva Bowers Bloomsbury YA
Jalissa and Kim Vasquez are cousins who move to the city of Los Aguaceros together. Kim dreams of becoming a famous model and fashion designer, while Jalissa is just trying to hold herself together after a breakdown the year before.
When a curious incident on the beach leaves them with supernatural powers and monsters start attacking the city, Kim decides that using their powers to stop them is the perfect way for them to become famous. But being heroes isn’t as easy as it seems–and Los Aquaceros is in more danger than they imagine.
This beautifully illustrated and hilarious YA graphic novel began as a web comic and quickly became a WEBTOON sensation. This print edition features an expanded story and updated art, offering something for new and old fans alike!

Reading update
Light Up the Lamp by Kit Oliver - 5/5 stars
Kit Oliver can do no wrong, I guess. I figured I'd like this one a lot given that I loved her other two novels, but hockey books usually aren't five star reads for me. Along comes this book! Unrelentingly lovely, and even though I knew it was going to have an HEA, I still found myself worried that Gil wasn't going to figure shit out.
The Faerie Hounds of York by Arden Powell - 5/5 stars
Gorgeous book that read like a dreamy, dark fairy tale. The first book by Arden Powell I read was really funny, and this was like the complete opposite. Powell has range! This one is sad, but still has a happy ending. If you like Emily Tesh's Greenhollow Duology, I highly recommend this one. They're definitely in the same vein.
Deosil by Jordan L Hawk - 4.75/5 stars
I was SO SAD to get to the end of this series. Whyborne, Griffin, Christine, Iskander, Persephone, Maggie, Niles...I could go on, I love them all. It's hard to say good-bye but they all got a wonderful ending.
The Inside Edge by Ashlyn Kane - 3/5 stars
The Taste of Desert Green by Kim Fielding - 4.25/5 stars
Your Lonely Nights Are Over by Adam Sass - 1/5 stars
Crushed Ice by Ashlyn Kane and Morgan James - 4/5 stars
Roustabout by Morgan Brice - 3/5 stars
Prince in Disguise by Tavia Lark - 5/5 stars
Loved this one just as much as the first in the series. I expected the Draskorans to be...idk, like stereotype fantasy barbarians, so it was extremely refreshing that they weren't.
Old Time Religion by EH Lupton - 5/5 stars
Ahhhhhhhh I love this series!! I really really enjoyed the first book, and I loved this one even more. Really good, really original. I can't recommend this one and Dionysus in Wisconsin enough!
A Thief and a Gentleman by Arden Powell - 3.5/5 stars
The Devil to Pay by Katie Daysh - 4.75/5 stars
If you like Patrick O'Brian but find yourself thinking, surely this could be more gay? Then Katie Daysh's books are for you. This is the second in the series and I was delighted to learn yesterday from her newsletter that she's working on the third, because I definitely am not ready for the series to end! The first book was from Nightingale's POV (there might have been some bits from Courtney's POV? But not many), and this one is entirely from Courtney's. Courtney and Nightingale didn't actually get to spend much time together in this one so I hope they catch more of a break in book 3.
Lord of Eternal Night by Ben Alderson - DNF at pg 6
The Engineer by CS Poe - 4/5 stars
The Larks Still Bravely Singing by Aster Glenn Gray - 5/5 stars
If you're not reading Aster Glenn Gray yet, why not? Why not??? Seriously, if you like Cat Sebastian, PLEASE give Aster Glenn Gray a try. I have yet to read a book by the woman that isn't gorgeous. This book is set right at the tail end of WWI and into the interwar period and is about two young English men who were injured and invalided out of the army. They're both disabled (Robert, the POV character, is missing a leg, and David is missing a hand) and have PTSD.
Also recommended if you like KJ Charles's Will Darling Adventures trilogy. The Larks Still Bravely Singing is just straight historical romance, not romantic suspense, but it deals with similar themes.
Guardians of Dawn: Zhara by S Jae-Jones - DNF at pg 24
Mr Warren's Profession by Sebastian Nothwell - 4.75/5 stars
LOVED this book. I think it's the only historical romance I've read that uses the Industrial Revolution so heavily in the plot, which I really enjoyed. Plus, gorgeous cover.
Honey Mead Murder by Dahlia Donovan - DNF at pg 5
A Market of Dreams and Destiny by Trip Galey - 3.25/5 stars
String Theory by Ashlyn Kane and Morgan James - 3.75/5 stars
One Night in Hartswood by Emma Denny - 5/5 stars
I honestly don't know why, when I received this book in like, November, I didn't immediately put it on the top of my TBR pile. I knew I was going to love it; I was super excited to get my copy. Every time I've shuffled my TBR (like, my actual physical TBR...it's a whole thing...it's actually been mistaken for my full book collection but haha no that's just 200 books I haven't read yet sitting on my stairs...), I've lamented that it's not closer to the top. And then I realized, this is literally my TBR and my own weird fake rules that I've made up about it, so I can actually just pull it from the stack and read it now. So I did!
And yeah, I loved it. So much. Raff and Penn will probably live rent free in my mind forever, not to mention Ash and Lily. I loved the medieval setting (another setting you don't see much in queer historical romance!) and how it really felt like a different world than ours. Plus I'm a sucker for road trip romances. And daddy issues. And horrific scars.
And ugh, the training scenes. The sexual tension. The PINING. Masterfully done. Chef's kiss.
Also we're going to find out who Oliver was, right? RIGHT??? And what happened to Penn's brother?
Out of Touch by Michael Sarais - DNF at pg 7
The Long Call by Ann Cleeves - 4.25/5 stars
Always enjoy a mystery that's well-paced and well-written. I've never actually read anything by Ann Cleeves but I'm going to pick up the rest of this series.
The Death I Gave Him by Em X Liu - DNF at pg 284

What are 5 lines you’ve written that have given you butterflies?
Thanks to @jo-harrington for the tag! It's difficult to choose (because I tend to have moments that give me butterflies instead of specific lines, but mostly because I have a terrible memory and can't remember what I've written, haha), but here are mine:
The Road Forgotten, chapter 4: They continued their walk in silence, while her loose ribbons danced playfully on a spring breeze, occasionally touching his shoulder.
Love, If You're Near: She buried her nose in Michael’s neck, taking in his scent of soap and sweat and smoke, and let out a breath she had been holding for three years, or perhaps even longer. “This is nice,” she said. “I can see why you’d pay for this.”
The Firebird, chapter 7: [Paul] gingerly sat back down. Zhara settled into his arms again with a contented sigh—had she always fitted there so well, so naturally?
Through the World's Far Ends: If there was anything of England in these foreign fields at all, it probably wouldn’t be the England that pretty, posh Rupert Brooke was thinking about. No, it would be the England that Leonard himself was familiar with, the England of damp basement dwellings, of grimy streets, of cold and hunger, and long, tedious nights.
Love in a Mist, chapter 9: “Home,” she said, slipping her hand into his. And so they went home.
Tagging @palomahasenteredthechat, @waterfallsilverberrywrites, and anyone who wants to play!

Can you do deadweight part 3, I'm really loving it!
⚠️Spoilers for season two Episode 4⚠️
Kash and Zhara came back, not that anyone cared to acknowledge as they were too busy weeping over your body.
Kash insisted that a revival rite was to be performed while your body was still warm, insisting that it was hard a fuck to execute without fucking up somehow but as a golden cocoon encased you. No one seemed to take notice of the large looming shadow of the Matron encroaching you but Vax.
She slunk past him and stood over everyone before lowering a talon like finger towards your figure as it floated several inches off the ground but…everyone could tell something wasn’t right and it was only confirmed when Vax watched as the golden cocoon protecting you broke as easily as glass; shattering into nothingness as you landed into the arms of Your friends who’s panicked words fell on Vax’s deaf ears.
He could only heard his breath and his heartbeat as his blood ran cold when the Matron run her talon like finger against the golden string emanating from your chest like it were Scanlan’s lute string. It pissed Vax off that you were given this fate, a fate that wasn’t yours to bear but you happened to be there by pure coincidence.
He could tell by his sisters eyes that it was supposed to be her in your place but you acted valiantly and took the brunt of it instead. For that he couldn’t thank you enough for protecting his sister when he wasn’t nearby to do so. However this wasn’t how he wanted to see you go out and he wasn’t about to either because as the matron was about to pull your cord he yelled.
“Take me instead you raven bitch!”
The matron only spared him a glance before with a single flick of her wrist, the golden string emanating from your chest snapped.
