Linebacker Ted Johnson, who won three Super Bowls with the Patriots, said Brady’s claim that his “brain is wired for contact” sends a dangerous message. “I’ll be honest, and I love Tom, it made me throw up in my mouth a little bit,” Johnson told Boston’s The Sports Hub on Thursday. “It was very irresponsible for Tom to talk like that. ‘My brain’s wired for contact.’ “So, what, Kevin Turner’s wasn’t? Junior Seau’s wasn’t? Justin Strzelczyk’s brain wasn’t? Andre Waters’ brain wasn’t wired for contact? But yours is (wired for contact)? It was very insensitive and I thought irresponsible to talk like that.” Those are just four of the players whose deaths have been linked to CTE after suffering numerous concussions during their football careers. Johnson has dealt with depression since retiring in 2004. He told CNN in 2009 that he barely left his house in the years after leaving the game. Advertisement “I’d [leave to] go see my kids for maybe 15 minutes,” Johnson said. “Then I would go back home and close the curtains, turn the lights off and I’d stay in bed. That was my routine for two years. Those were bad days.” Brady made the comments in a Dec. 13 interview with Westwood One as he touts his TB12 workout method. The 41-year-old, who has the Patriots in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, plans to play into his mid-40s. He has shrugged off concussion concerns, though his wife, Gisele Bündchen, briefly voiced them in the past and has implored him to retire. “I don’t. I don’t,” Johnson said when asked if he shares Brady’s confidence in the TB12 method when it comes to brain injuries. “I haven’t seen it in the medical journals, right? It’s in his book, right? But I haven’t seen any other scientists back it up and validate it. (If) that happens, maybe I’ll start taking it serious. But until that time, it just seems very irresponsible.” Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email Copy READ NEXT SPONSORED STORIES [Pics] Tebow Declines Prom Invite Leaving Girl In Tears Then Melts Her Heart With This [Pics] Tebow Declines Prom Invite Leaving Girl In Tears Then Melts Her… Scribol [Photos] The Scene That Ended "I Dream Of Jeannie" [Photos] The Scene That Ended "I Dream Of Jeannie" Bob's Hideout [Photos] Vietnam Photos That Will Make You Think About War Differently [Photos] Vietnam Photos That Will Make You Think About War Differently Coolimba [Gallery] Danica Patrick Never Married, But Now We Know Why [Gallery] Danica Patrick Never Married, But Now We Know Why FetchSport See What Full Mouth Dental Implants Should Cost See What Full Mouth Dental Implants Should Cost Dental Implants| Sponsored listing Cloud Is Essential to Supply Chain Modernization Cloud Is Essential to Supply Chain Modernization Oracle on The Wall Street Journal AROUND THE WEB The Head-Turning Reveal Megan Fox Made About Shia LaBeouf Huffingtonpost.com 'Tucker Carlson Tonight' In Deep Trouble, Loses 13 Advertisers Hollywoodreporter.com What's Come Out About Bob Ross Since He Died Grunge.com 8 Beers You Should and Shouldn't Drink Mashed.com Here's What Really Happened to Diane Sawyer TheList.com GoFundMe is Refunding All Donations Made to Build Border Wall Aol.com Yogi Berra's 10 Greatest Quotes Athlonsports.com Big Wave in Florida Sends People Running in Scary Video Weather.com Powered By ZergNet RECOMMENDED FOR YOU New York Post Mia Khalifa gets graphic in calling out diving soccer star New York Post Texas corrections officer accused of having sex with multiple... She said police escorted them out after about 40 minutes. “We were mostly all quiet and in shock,” said Calacino, a 21-year-old student at the University of Utah. She said she learned there was a shooting from a message on the intercom. Everyone immediately got on their phones, she said, to learn what was happening. Friends were texting to ask if she was OK. Some people were crying. Reuters SUN JAN 13, 2019 / 8:34 PM EST Flights canceled as deadly snowstorm hits U.S. mid-Atlantic states (Reuters) - A winter snowstorm blamed for the deaths of at least seven people in road accidents across the U.S. Midwest rolled into the mid-Atlantic states on Sunday, forcing a ground stop at Dulles International Airport and the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Millions of Americans in 10 states and Washington, D.C., were under winter storm warnings as the weather system, which started as rain in Mexico was forecast to hit an 1,800-mile (2,900-km) swath of the United States from Colorado to the East Coast. A total of 1,624 flights were canceled in and out of U.S. airports on Sunday, the bulk of them at Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport and Dulles, according to the Flightaware flight tracking website. A further 3,113 departures were delayed. ADVERTISEMENT "The FAA has implemented a ground stop at Dulles due to the weather, which is impacting both inbound and outbound flights," Dulles airport said on Twitter. Home News World Sports Economy Technology Life Columns × Yeni Şafak Piri Medya VIEW GAZETE YAZARI Is Saudi Arabia governing the United States? 14 January 2019, 10.15 Yasin Aktay Yasin Aktay Previous Columns Both Republican and Democrat Congress members showed a rare example of collaboration and consensus by attending the commemoration ceremony held for slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi 100 days after his murder at the Consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. Reaching such a consensus at a time when there is a tense political atmosphere after Donald Trump shut down the government because of the “stubbornness” of the Democrats for the wall that is being built across the Mexican border constitutes an extremely exceptional case. Interestingly, Khashoggi plays a role that is decreasing the tension in EU politics and rescuing the national consensus culture of their politics by reminding all Americans of their common values. We have already related that a congress member, Tom Malinowski, in his speech at the commemoration ceremony said things that meant, “Khashoggi’s murderers need to be found and tried, or the result will show that Saudi Arabia is governing the U.S.” In fact, these words are cautionary in the sense that it demands us to reconsider what we know about the nature of U.S.-Saudi Arabia relations. As you may recall, shortly before the Khashoggi murder, Trump, during a meeting of his party members and voters said to the Saudi King, “Look, King, you wouldn’t last two weeks if it hadn’t been for our support.” These words were stating the obvious for those who are accustomed to what is considered normal about the Saudi-U.S. relations, but at the same time, it was unkind and diplomatically scandalous words coming from a president’s mouth. Even though everybody knew it, nobody could have said such a thing in public. People are not ready to hear the whole truth, nor do they want to. After all, what keeps international relations functioning are ceremonial compliments and huge lies repeatedly told by both parties. Well, was what Trump had said completely true? If that is the case, those words should have been enough to devastate Saudi Arabia. However, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) blew off Trump’s comments and stated that the U.S. is not the only alternative. One week later, the Khashoggi murder was carried out and there were even some who evaluated that this was the U.S.’s response to the unruliness of Mohammed Bin Salman. Therefore, according to this belief, the Khashoggi murder was a conspiracy against Saudi Arabia after MBS’s defiance. Saudi Arabian media immediately bought this story and wasted their time covering it. However, how could the U.S. plan such an act while all the actors, the murderers, and the organization belonged to the Saudis, and how could they send them to conspire against MBS? No matter how you push it, it is a scenario no one would believe. Now, let’s clearly ask this question brought to our minds by Malinowski: contrary to common belief, is Saudi Arabia governing the U.S.? It was not the U.S. but Saudi Arabia who financed counter-revolutions which would turn the Arab Spring process on its head and spent tons of money to prepare the U.S. public opinion. It was also Saudi Arabia that took all the measures to prevent the development of democracy in the Middle East and used all means to strangle any democratic development in the region. To tell the truth, we would all prefer to see the U.S. as the responsible party of these actions because it has always been the usual suspect. But Saudi Arabia played a major role in the civil war which broke out in Algeria in the early 90s, thus claiming the lives of over 200,000 people. The intention was to prevent the development of democracy, especially to prevent Muslim people from bringing Islam and democracy together and to prevent them from gaining control. It was Saudi Arabia that fueled the coup in Egypt and later tried to legitimize it in all international platforms. It was also Saudi Arabia that tried to convince members of Congress and U.S. authorities to recognize Ikhwan as a terrorist organization. It is also financing a think-tank organization and lobbying activities to prepare the reports and conferences necessary for that purpose. Interestingly enough, Saudi Arabia, which took an anti-revolutionary stance in all the Arab Spring countries, assumed a position to toppled the Assad regime in Syria and tried to influence the American decision-making organs to take action in that direction. These efforts played an important role in this movement that was originally organized to punish Assad, but it was later transformed into a deadlock and continuous chaos. In fact, when we collectively consider the Arab counter-revolutions with this operation in Syria, we clearly see that Turkey and the democratization and development processes it represents have suffered the greatest detriment. Everybody sees the U.S. not Saudi Arabia as the instigator and the guardian of these orders. However, it is Saudi Arabia which forces the U.S. to play this role with its lobbying activities within the country, as well as its diplomacy and financing. Today, on the other hand, there is a counter Saudi Arabian initiative in question, while an initiative is operating under Turkey’s leadership which is based upon Syria’s territorial integrity and a solution that ensures that all segments of society peaceful cohabitation. According to a report by the www.middleeasteye.net website, in a meeting attended by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel, issues such as reestablishing diplomatic ties with Syria and ensuring its return to the Arab League and supporting PYD/YPG terrorists against Turkey’s intervention were discussed. These are in parallel with U.S. policies. Really, who is governing whom? U.S. policies have a structure that is open to the outside effects of the lobbying activities, and nowadays Saudi Arabia is channeling policies which are getting the U.S. into trouble in Yemen, Libya, Syria and Egypt; however these policies have no benefit to the U.S. in the long run, on the contrary they harm it. In this case, we should say “too little too late!” to Malinowski. The U.S. is being governed not by the Americans but by Saudi Arabia or Israel or any other group or country that can take action early. A massive winter storm hit the US Rockies and plains on Friday then punched east, with snow set to assault a 1,800-mile (2,900km) corridor through the weekend, creating transportation “havoc” in the middle of the country. The system started as rain from Mexico and turned to snow as it met icy air. Up to 18in (45cm) of snow were expected in the Sangre de Cristo mountains south of Denver, according to the National Weather Service. As the storm heads east, up to 16in (41cm) of snow were likely in western Missouri and St Louis. Areas to the east could get about 6in (15cm) with ice developing in Kansas, and Arkansas, and up to 4in (10cm) of snow in Washington DC, before the system heads out to sea late on Sunday, AccuWeather said. From China to Russia, world is blanketed in white – in pictures “The storm is expected to create havoc over the central part of the country, then extend eastward into the mid-Atlantic states,” said Randy Adkins, an AccuWeather meteorologist. The FlightAware.com flight tracking website reported 1,431 flight cancellations on Friday and 12,465 delays, with problems at snow-hit airports like Denver causing knock-on effects around the country. While the storm will spare the heavily populated north-east, it likely will disrupt air and auto travel from Kansas City to Indianapolis, and will bring the heaviest snowfall so far this winter to Cincinnati and the Ohio river valley, said the AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Walker. Photograph: Andrew Hay/Reuters Although the Kansas City area is expected to get up to 6in of snow, it should be over by the time the Kansas City Chiefs begin their National Football League playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday afternoon. St Louis emergency management officials are bracing for auto travel disruptions and possible power outages, but based on current forecasts, are not expecting to be overwhelmed, spokeswoman Tracy Panus said. “This is not the first storm we’ve had in the St. Louis area,” Panus, said by telephone. As the system moves eastward, it will hand off to a second coastal storm on Sunday that will bring 2-4in (5-10cm) of snow to the Washington DC, area before it moves off the coast that night, Walker said. “There could be a period of ice that we’re concerned about across portions of central North Carolina and back into the mountains,” he added. • This article was amended on 12 January 2019 to correct a mileage conversion. Breitbart Data: White American Births Below Replacement Level in Every State LOUISA GOULIAMAKI/AFP/Getty Images JOHN BINDER 13 Jan 2019 The United States birth rate remains well below the replacement level needed as white American births plummet in all 50 states and the District of Colombia. New federal data released by the Center for Disease Control reveals that American women are having less and less children needed to sustain the current population. In 2017, all but two states in the country had birth rates below replacement level. The total U.S. birth rate was about 1.765 children per woman. The U.S. needs a birth rate of at least 2.1 children per woman to replace the current population of the country without experiencing population decreases. (Center for Disease Control) States like California, New York, Wyoming, West Virginia, and Washington, DC, saw the lowest birth rates in the country. For example, Washington, DC, had a birth rate of only about 1.7, far below the 2.1 level needed to replace the metro area’s population. Meanwhile, only South Dakota and Utah had birth rates above replacement level. South Dakota had a birth rate of about 2.2 children per woman, while Utah had a birth rate of about 2.1 children per woman. In all 50 states and the District of Colombia, white women had birth rates below replacement level. The highest birth rate among women were those living in Utah. The white birth rate in Utah was about 2.0 children per woman. Black women in the U.S. only had above replacement level birth rates in 12 states while Hispanic women had the largest share of birth rates throughout the states. Births among Hispanic women were above replacement level in 29 states. The U.S. is now less than half of what it was in the 1950’s. Between 1955 to 1960, the U.S. birth rate peaked with nearly 3.6 children being born per woman. Demographers predict, based on current trends, for the U.S. birth rate to remain below replacement level into the year 2100. John Binder is a reporter for Breitbart News. Related Article: Why Americans are having fewer children In 2017, among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, total fertility rates ranged from a rate of 2,227.5 births per 1,000 women in South Dakota to 1,421 per 1,000 women in DC, a difference of 57%, according to the report, published Thursday. Overall, the total fertility rate for the United States in 2017 was 1,765.5 per 1,000 women, which was 16% below what is considered the level needed for a population to replace itself: 2,100 births per 1,000 women, according to the report. State-by-state differences in fertility The new report was based on birth certificate data from 2017, provided to the National Center for Health Statistics through the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program. The researchers took a close look at state-by-state data and total fertility rates. Rates were measured as estimates of the number of births that a hypothetical group of 1,000 women would have over their lifetimes, given what birth rates were by age for that year. The researchers found that South Dakota, with a rate of 2,227.5, and Utah, with a rate of 2,120.5, were the only states with a total fertility rate above replacement level in 2017. The report also showed differences in total fertility rates by race: Among non-Hispanic white women, no states had a fertility rate above the replacement level; among non-Hispanic black women, 12 states did; and among Hispanic women, 29 states did. Related Article: US fertility rates down, first-time moms getting older For non-Hispanic white women, the highest total fertility rate was in Utah, at 2,099.5, and the lowest in the District of Columbia, at 1,012. Among non-Hispanic black women, the highest total fertility rate was in Maine, at 4,003.5, and the lowest in Wyoming, at 1,146. For Hispanic women, the highest total fertility rate was in Alabama, at 3,085, and the lowest in Vermont, at 1,200.5, and Maine, at 1,281.5. The report had some limitations, including that for some groups of women, the number of births used as the basis for calculating total fertility rate was small. Related Article: US fertility rate hits a record low Yet, in general, "although nearly all states lack a (total fertility rate) that indicates their total population will increase due to births, these results demonstrate that there is variation in fertility patterns within states among groups according to race and Hispanic origin," the researchers wrote in the report. Previous research has shown that US birthrates appeared to hit a "record low" in 2017, when the number of births nationwide was at its lowest in three decades. Based on data from the National Center for Heath Statistics released last year, about 3,853,472 babies were born nationally in 2017 -- the lowest number of births in 30 years and down from a 2007 record high of 4,316,233. 'There is a concern' The total fertility rate for the United States has been on the decline for a while, said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, who was not involved in the new report. Related Article: World's fertility rate cut in half since 1950, study says "We have been seeing fertility rates go down, and I think it has a lot to do with women and men, couples in particular, having much more control over their reproductive lives," Benjamin said. For instance, between 2007 and 2017, total fertility rates in the United States fell 12% in rural counties, 16% in suburban counties and 18% in large metro counties, according to a separate CDC data brief released in October. Additionally, provisional data on births that the CDC published in May noted that the nationwide total fertility rate "has generally been below replacement since 1971." When considering rates over larger periods of time, "remember that we're coming off of a peak of the baby boom generation. So it's also being tracked from that very high baby boom that we had after World War II, and so you're really looking at reductions from that high," Benjamin said. "I think the concern is -- and there is a concern -- is having a fertility rate that doesn't allow us in effect to perpetuate our society," he said. "But we may very well over time start seeing this reversed or flattened out, but that remains to be seen." President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats have made little progress in negotiations to end a shutdown that has affected about 800,000 federal workers, many of whom will miss their first pay cheque this week, and who owe a combined US$249 million (S$336 million) in monthly mortgage payments, according to online real estate firm Zillow. The stand-off is beginning to inflict pain on Americans, whose lives are affected, in one way or another, by the federal government. It is already the second-longest shutdown in history, behind the one that started in December 1995 and lasted 21 days. On Monday (Jan 7), the Trump administration moved to soften some of the blow - and prevent taxpayer outrage - by directing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to issue tax refunds during the shutdown, reversing previous policy. While the decision will allow taxpayers to get their money, the IRS workers being called back from furlough to process those refunds will not be paid until the shutdown ends. The effects of a prolonged shutdown have some Wall Street economists predicting a hit to the US economy. ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Bank of America Merrill Lynch economists said on Monday that it had pushed them to downgrade their estimates for economic growth at the end of 2018 by a 10th of a per cent. Related Story With Trump digging in, US shutdown could set new record Related Story Warning of possible cut to US credit rating if government shutdown continues Related Story Trump walks out of talks on shutdown, bemoans ‘total waste of time’ Related Story Trump's long shutdown risks long-term global damage The ramifications of a prolonged shutdown are beginning to unnerve those both inside and outside the federal government. Some private companies and charities that serve public employees are searching for ways to cushion the impact. The effects extend from the President's inner circle, to Wall Street to farm country. 1. SECRET SERVICE AGENTS LEFT IN THE LURCH Virtually every employee with the Secret Service involved in investigations, security and the protective division, which protects Mr Trump and dozens of other current and former government officials and their families, is required to work during the shutdown. And 6,000 of the organisation's roughly 7,000 employees will not be paid. Secret Service agents are growing increasingly anxious and angry about the shutdown, according to several current and former agents. The Secret Service protects 42 people associated with the Trump White House, 11 more than were given details during the Obama administration. In August 2017, the agency's new director, Mr Randolph D. Alles, told an interviewer that the sprawling Trump entourage was putting unprecedented strains on his agents, in terms of staffing and budgeting. "They are asking you to put your life on the line and not paying you - it's ridiculous," said Mr Donald Mihalek, 49, a 20-year Secret Service veteran whose own retirement paperwork has yet to be processed because of the shutdown. "Morale is a serious issue," said Mr Mihalek, who served on the presidential detail during Mr George W. Bush's and Mr Barack Obama's administrations. "This is an incredibly stressful job that requires your full attention, and if you are standing there thinking about your mortgage, or your credit card bills, or the fact that you are burning through your savings, you are distracted, you not able to give 100 per cent." 2. FINANCIAL ENFORCEMENT SUFFERS The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has come to a standstill with "only an extremely limited number of staff members available to respond to emergency situations", according to a shutdown plan posted on the commission's website. The SEC has about 4,400 full-time employees and during the shutdown is operating with just a few hundred - most of those tasked "to protect life or property". The constrained operations means pending investigations in securities violations have ground to a halt, and there is no one reviewing applications for company stock offerings to raise cash or consider merger and acquisition filings. Defence and corporate lawyers said meetings with potential witnesses in pending investigations have been cancelled, and some companies seeking to raise cash through a stock offering are having to bide their time. Staff lawyers at the SEC are largely prohibited from responding to e-mails seeking information or guidance. In the past, the SEC had managed to keep operating during government shutdowns by shifting around money in its budget. But the commission, which has been operating under a hiring freeze for more than a year, is not able to do that this time. "When I was there, we always had money to be able to operate for a certain period of time," said Mr Andrew M. Calamari, a lawyer with Finn Dixon & Herling in Connecticut, who stepped down as the director of the SEC's New York office in October 2017. "I was there for 17 years, and in my time, we had several shutdowns, and in each case, we continued to operate." The SEC said in a statement that staff "continues to monitor the asset management space, track market activity and watch for systems issues or other events that could disrupt the fair and orderly operation of the securities markets". The agency also said it had advised those making financial filings to request expedited action before the shutdown. But corporate America will now have to wait for the government to reopen in order to move ahead with things like initial public offerings and pending corporate mergers that need approvals from regulators. 3. A WAITING GAME FOR BUSINESSES, FROM CRAFT BREWERS TO AUTO SUPPLIERS As the effect moves well beyond the nation's capital, craft brewers cannot get approval from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for new beer labels. And the Commerce Department has stopped processing requests from auto suppliers and other manufacturing companies seeking an exemption from Mr Trump's metal tariffs, leaving them uncertain over the price they will need to pay for key materials this year. Farmers who planned to apply for subsidies to help mitigate the effect of Mr Trump's trade war must wait to get paid until the Agriculture Department's Farm Service Agency offices reopen. And in neighbourhoods across the country, as many as 39,000 federally backed mortgage applications may have already been delayed because of reduced staffing in federal agencies, according to Zillow estimates. 4. NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS OFFER NO-INTEREST LOANS TO TIDE OVER Several non-profit organisations, including the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, are trying to aid Department of Homeland Security workers who need immediate help with a limited pool of cash and other resources, an officer with the group's charitable foundation said. The Navy Federal Credit Union is offering no-interest loans to service members who face the prospect of missed pay cheques. Financial services firm USAA, though, has drawn criticism from members of the Coast Guard for offering similar loans that charge interest. 5. FOOD BENEFITS COULD RUN OUT BY END-JANUARY The biggest and most far-reaching effect of the shutdown looms on Feb 1. Trump administration officials say that funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme, or Snap, which provides food benefits for about 40 million people, will run out of cash by the end of the month. The Agriculture Department has not made it clear how long it will be able to fund the programme, which costs about US$4.7 billion a month, but estimates by anti-hunger groups put the department's reserves at US$3 billion to US$5 billion, meaning funding is more likely to completely run out in February or March. Other food assistance programmes are facing a more immediate cash crunch. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Programme for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, has already been cut off, with state funds filling the gap as the shutdown drags on. WIC provides aid to an additional seven million low-income Americans who are considered to be at "nutritional risk". Missing out on our exclusive articles? The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the agency responsible for airport security screening, said unscheduled absences among its employees rose to 7.7 per cent from 5.6 per cent last Saturday. The rate is more than double the 3.2 per cent rate experienced a year ago. The TSA said in a statement on Sunday that security had not been compromised at US airports. The screeners are among the lowest-paid federal employees. While they will be paid once the shutdown ends, many say they will struggle to pay bills in the meantime. Miami International Airport said it planned to reopen Concourse G on Monday. The concourse was closed for part of the weekend because not enough TSA workers were present to staff the security checkpoint. Here's why only 4 US states are called 'Commonwealths,' and the significance behind the label Sarah Wells Jan 14, 2019, 11:11 AM Boston Boston, Massachusetts, the capital city of one of four "Commonwealth" states in the US.Shutterstock/Rsphotograph Only four US states have legal names that include the term Commonwealth: Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Here's the historical (and global) significance behind the label. Maybe you first came across the term on a US history test or while watching a documentary. But have you ever stopped to ponder what the word "Commonwealth" really means and why it's applied to some states and territories but not others? The global and historical answer behind it might surprise you. The Commonwealth states Shutterstock/Jon Bilous There are four US states whose legal names include the term Commonwealth: Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. However, this term does not affect laws or life in these states today, nor did it when they were first created either. According to the Massachusetts State Government , the term "Commonwealth" was incorporated into their constitution in 1780 and was used to express the ideal that "the people [of Massachusetts] ... form themselves into a free, sovereign, and independent body politic, or state." This framing of the state as a commonwealth derives from language of 17 th -century thinkers like Thomas Hobbes and John Locke and refers to the goal of creating a political community for the common good. This was common language for politicians at the time aiming to express the ideals of a democratic state, but the term has never had an effect on the legal relationship of the state to the government. The states of Pennsylvania and Virginia included similar language in their state constitutions in 1776, as did Kentucky in 1850. Commonwealth territories Reuters/Alvin Baez The question of commonwealths becomes a bit more complicated when we move beyond the continental United States to look at a few of its island territories. The US has five major territories: American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of these five, only two of them are considered commonwealths - the Northern Mariana Island and Puerto Rico. Like their state counterparts, the use of the term commonwealth in the full titles of these territories does not affect their legal status. Though it legally has no significance, the title of "commonwealth" has come into question during disputes over the future of Puerto Rico's status as a territory - namely, in the debate over whether the territory should remain as it is, become independent, or become a fully integrated US State. Some supporters of Puerto Rico's independence have supported a kind of fusion status that would utilize the term commonwealth and grant the territory rights similar to those of a Free Associated State, including the right to manage their own international affairs while still maintaining a special relationship with the United States. Beyond the US AP Images The term commonwealth is also still used beyond the US, notably in the Commonwealth of Nations - a 53 country intergovernmental group which includes countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, and India - where nearly all the countries share a history of being ruled by the British Empire as a territory or colony. While most of these commonwealth countries are independent from the United Kingdom today, Queen Elizabeth II still serves as head of state for 16 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations, including Canada, Jamaica, and New Zealand. Despite these countries having no legal obligation to one another, they do share a set of common goals. In its charter , the group commits to "the development of free and democratic societies and the promotion of peace and prosperity to improve the lives of all peoples of the Commonwealth." Again, the term commonwealth here is used to emphasize the vision of a democratic and prosperous political community. These countries also share a common appreciation for friendly competition and participate every four years in a sporting event - much like the Olympics - called the Commonwealth Games . Hosted most recently in Australia in 2018, athletes from these commonwealth countries come together to compete in sports like swimming and diving, table tennis, and gymnastics. While the term commonwealth can be almost entirely dismissed as a remnant of political language from centuries ago, it is also a lasting reminder of the goals and ideals of politicians who shaped these nations - and a reminder of what those nations are still striving to achieve every day. Michael Moore Urges Democrats To ‘Declare A National Emergency’ Amid FBI Trump Probe
“Bring a halt to all business being done in the name of this potential felony suspect, Donald J. Trump.”
By Ron Dicker
Filmmaker Michael Moore on Wednesday urged the Democratic Party to declare a national emergency after the FBI said it was investigating whether members of Donald Trump’s campaign team had worked with the Russian government to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.
Of course, Moore made his point in a most engaging way on Instagram, using a red light — specifically, that of sentient computer HAL 9000 from “2001: A Space Odyssey” — to call on Democratic leaders to respond with full alarm to the “shock in our democracy.”
“The Democratic leadership in the House and Senate needs to bring a halt to all business being done in the name of this potential felony suspect, Donald J. Trump,” Moore wrote. “No bill he supports, no Supreme Court nominee he has named, can be decided while he is under a criminal investigation. His presidency has no legitimacy until the FBI ― and an independent investigative committee ― discovers the truth.”
The Oscar-winning documentary director has been an outspoken critic of President Trump, having instructed Americans on how to resist his administration from Day 1.
This time, he punctuated his point by using an ironic quote from former Republican President Richard Nixon.
The man does have a flair for inspiring action.
This post has been updated to note that the image Moore uses is from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Module 1: Tumblr Media Switch Up
1.    What network, app or media format did you select this week?
This week I have selected ZergNet. ZergNet is an audience development platform which sends visitors to partner sites. Publishers use a customizable widget to serve content recommendations from partner sites, which in turn link back to them.
2.    How did this selection differ from your usual media consumption habits?
I have never used a platform that recommends content, such as Outbrain, Adblade, or Taboola, before.
3.    What did you learn or find interesting about the community who uses said selection?
Zergnet has become popular with some end users that compare the site with BuzzFeed. Zergnet aims to distinguish itself from its competitors by focusing on high quality. In fact they pitch themselves as a higher-quality alternative to other content recommendation widgets, such as the ones mentioned above. Users seem to be more focused than the typical consumers of such sites.
4.    What is the composition of the community of individuals using this selection? Does it over index in any demographic measures or interests/passions?
According to their About Us section, Zergnet recommends over one billion articles every day, resulting in over 3 million daily visitors to the related sites. Zergnet recommends content in 12 sections including, movies, entertainment, women’s and men’s lifestyle, sports and entertainment.
According to alexa.com, the audience for this site among males and females is similar to the general internet population. Relative to the general internet population, people who went to college are over-represented at this site. Most people who browse the site do it from work.
5.    What did you learn or find interesting about the media format (images, text, video, etc.) said selection employs?
The fragmentation in different interest areas is a smart way to attract specific publics. I also found the message board-like presentation appealing and easy to use.
6.    Did you observe brands or organizations using said selection? How did they use it vs. the community of individuals using it?
The individuals who use the site are users who are interested in content, while the brands and organizations are trying to get them to their sites. ZergNet currently has partnerships with media companies such as AOL, Conde Nast, Hearst, NBC, News Corp, Rodale, Viacom, or Warner Bros. It's free to work with ZergNet, but partners are required to have a widget placed on their site to promote their articles, that sends traffic to the ZergNet homepage.
7.    Share any other insights or observations you might have.
The volume that Zergnet generates is proof of the overwhelming success that they are experiencing. It seems to be a useful tool to generate traffic.

Power Rangers (2017) Movie Review
Initiate Reboot Sequence!
For over 25 years, the Power Rangers have brought excitement to home television. Upon its announcement, many film elitists debated over whether or not the movie should keep its fun and cheesy feel, or go for a much more serious tone. Power Rangers continues its hold on fun and cheesy with drama sprinkled around. Not taking itself too dramatic or cheesy it often makes fun of itself and reminds the audience that they are watching a Power Rangers film. This is an enjoyable film that looks great, has funny moments and has a few well-acted roles.
The film does a good job getting the Power Rangers together in a realistic fashion. Once the team is united, they come across the coins left by the former Rangers of Earth and are chosen to become the new Rangers. Through the movie, we do get many funny moments by Kimberly and Jason. However, the character to steal the show regarding jokes was Billy. Being a bit of strange kid, Billy naturally had excellent timing in stating jokes like replacing curse words with very strange substitutes. When seeing Jason, Kimberly, and Billy on screen, you believe these characters exist. Further, into the film, we get to see Alpha 5 who is voiced by Bill Harder. He is a very enjoyable character because of his sarcastic humor.  His design was good but not something to marvel. However, Alpha's CGI was very well crafted, as well as the Zords seen later in the film.
Despite this being a fun movie to watch, it did have problems. Actor Ludi Lin, who portrays the Black Ranger, delivered moments that were simply unbelievable. Some scenes were meant to be thrilling to the character but feel under-delivered in ways that take the viewer out of the movie. Yellow Ranger was a generic teenager whose mother is always worried and asking a million questions per second. There was no dimension to this character, and there weren't any moments to care for her, as opposed to Black Ranger, who has a very ill mother back at home.
The film also spends too much time focusing on the teen's lives, which results in barely any action for the Power Rangers as a martial arts group saving the day. Enemy designs were so mediocre that seeing them get crushed during action sequences delivered little to no excitement. Goldar also appeared to be very poorly designed. Goldar needed a little more spark to catch the attention of the audience. Instead, it was just giant muck of gold walking taking commands from Rita Repulsa. Reti Repulsa was strangely cast for the movie. Being played by Elizabeth Banks, one would expect a stellar performance from her like in the Hunger Games, but it was a character that anyone could play. Her role was okay, but when seeing an elite actress play this role, you expect a little custom flavor.
Power Rangers has captivated living room audiences for many years now. Many of those viewers have a special place in their hearts for the rag-tag team of teens. The film manages to remain fun and cheesy with interesting bits drama sprinkled around. Without taking itself too seriously, it often makes fun of itself and reminds the audience that they are only watching a Power Rangers film; this is an enjoyable film that looks great, has funny moments and has a few well-performed roles.

Kristen Stewart celebrates young stars redefining sexuality
Tumblr media
Kristen Stewart says she felt a “huge responsibility” to define her sexuality after finding fame in the “Twilight” movie franchise. But she’s glad today’s young stars don’t have to do so.
The 29-year-old actress said she was “so gay” on “Saturday Night Live” two years ago. But she sees a shift in culture that’s allowed young people – in and outside Hollywood – to accept fluidity in gender and sexuality.
“I felt this huge responsibility, like one that I was really genuinely worried about, if I wasn’t able to say one way or the other, then was I sort of like forsaking a side,” said Stewart, who also had a long-term relationship with “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson.
“The fact that you don’t have to now is like so much more truthful,” said Stewart.
The actress stars alongside Laura Dern in “J.T. LeRoy,” a biopic about a young woman named Savannah Knoop whose sister-in-law Laura Albert created LeRoy as a literary persona. Knoop pretended to be a man in public appearances as the celebrated author, and now identifies as nonbinary.
Stewart celebrates that decision along with statements from younger Hollywood stars like Sophie Turner, 23, who have refused to label their sexuality.
“If you were to have this conversation with someone like in high school, they’d probably like roll their eyes and go, ‘Why are you complicating everything so much?’ … Just sort of do what you want to do,'” she said. “It’s really nice.”
Stewart says contemporary culture is still struggling to define fluid gender and sexuality: “I just feel like we don’t even have the words to describe the complexities of identity right now.”
Stewart says she’ll be putting that spirit into her feature film directorial debut, an adaptation of the memoir of a bisexual swimmer-turned-artist titled “The Chronology of Water.”
“So much of that spirit is completely about finding new – finding a new language. And like really understanding that your word house, so to speak, is constructed by you,” she said. “And you can also have a million definitions of any word you want. Like they are open for interpretation. … So like words as solace — because they really can be used as weapons or really like more saviors.”

[FEATURE] ART YOU CAN HEAR with @A5KEM
It’s always wonderful to reconnect with artists and individuals who we cover with U.G. Digital Magazine. Many will remember that we first connected with A5kem nearly two years back for one of our many issues. Arguably, he’s one of the most artistic people you’ll find , titling his brand an legacy ‘Art You Can Hear”. Over the years, he’s created amazing artwork of some of urban music’s largest figures, and that work as been recognized all around the world by many of those artists.
We’ve reconnected with him to get a much-needed update on his journey, and where his work has taken him since we last spoke.
U.G. Digital Mag: First of all, I have to really thank you for this opportunity. You were so instrumental in our early success as a publication. I've always wanted to give light and shine to individuals like yourself, and your willingness to participate in one of our early issues was so appreciated. Thank you for this time around as well. I have so much respect for you and what you're doing. I understand how big this is for you, and at the same time, it's just your everyday life. I love how your artwork really depicts the artists in the way we know then, but i sort of feel like it also defines them in a totally new way. Talk to me about what's in your mind when you create?
A5kem: I love to create images that resonate with the target audience. Like a song, I aim to allow each image to speak to the individual and invoke memories and emotions. Through this imagery that I entitle 'Art You Can Hear' I aim to have each image take you on a journey, to relive that first moment when you heard a particular song or artist. I think this is important as I create a relationship between the individual viewer and each image. Art is really about the experience and what it gives to you both visually and mentally, but without the pretentious 'art speak' that so much art has as an almost ball and chain around it. I think that if art is presented in that way it can very intimidating for the audience and potential buyers.
U.G. Digital Mag: What gives you the passion to create? Do you go through periods where you've kind of had it and you put it down for a while? If so, what brings you back to that mood of creativity?
A5kem: Well, I began my artistic career as a surrealist, painting dark images that came from deep within my soul. This form of art caused me to pack up tools and walk away for a year or so. I just felt as though the work had become almost like a form of therapy and each canvas was a record of my poor mental state. I returned to art with a completely different perspective and mission and that was to chronicle my lifelong love of Hip Hop. Hip Hop really is my inspiration, from the unique and powerful story telling and socially conscious lyrics of the golden era to today's interpretation. Hip Hop always enables me to find inspiration and opens the door for creativity.
U.G. Digital Mag: What's happening in your mind while you're creating? What thoughts are flowing in reference to that particular artist?
A5kem: Typically I try to find a hook that associates the artist with something that relates to their character, for an example I did a Kanye West piece where I had many hidden faces within the main portrait and references to Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. I think this reflects the spectrum of Kanye's personality and creativity. My thoughts are to always challenge the audience with what I create, to create something that is truly iconic and unique from any other artist’s work, again 'Art You Can Hear'.
U.G. Digital Mag: You've gained so much more acclaim in the past year and I think it's amazing. Speaking from the mind of creativity, I absolutely love the entertainment industry, and it excites me when I interview someone and they love it. There so much bad media, and people who are vindictive when writing about pop and urban culture, so I love when people see my true intentions. How do you feel to see people like Chuck D on a plane posting about you, or any other artist for that matter who has given you praise?
A5kem: For me having artists such as Chuck D provide validation and interest in my work is what makes it all worthwhile, these are artists which inspire me and through they’re craft have allowed me to grow not only as an artist but as an individual. It is something that really gels well with my ethos and vision for the work as ultimately I am recording their craft so the relationship is essential to be a two way thing built on mutual respect and love for each other’s work.
U.G. Digital Mag: How has business been for you now that more people know of you?
A5kem: Art is always a challenge and there are so many preconceived ideas of what or how art should be presented and defined and with the presence of social media it is an even bigger challenge for artists, however I have been fortunate to cultivate a good following and have built many contacts within Hip-Hop itself that it has allowed me to have art as my day job.
U.G. Digital Mag: Where do you see things heading in the future in terms of artistry, and the subjects you want to depict moving forward?
A5kem: Currently I am working on a book with Chuck D and some fellow artists. This should appear at some point in the summer. I also plan to move stateside and bring ‘Art You Can Hear’ to America as it will allow greater opportunities to grow and diversify my work. I visualize creating an art foundation at some point where I can facilitate teaching art to young people and bringing art to urban America.
U.G. Digital Mag: Without me going into heavy detail, I know you've experiences some of life's most tragic moments throughout your time doing this. I can only imagine how it has affected your creativity and will to move in at times. How have you gotten inspired to move forward?
A5kem: Well, I would say that the beginning of this year has been without doubt the most difficult period in my life and I have really struggled to find the inspiration and motivation to move forward. Ultimately, I provide a service and there is an expectation for me to deliver consistently to an audience that has been loyal to me. So really, I draw inspiration from those who like my work. If I can keep them interested and enjoying my work that is the greatest reward and allows one to heal as well.
U.G. Digital Mag: What things can we look out for in the near future?
A5kem: As I mentioned a move to the USA where I will then be more accessible to my audience and Indeed providing access to the birthplace of Hip-Hop itself. I am looking at creating a full service art agency providing ‘Art You Can Hear’ to the industry and beyond.
U.G. Digital Mag: Any final thoughts at all?
A5kem: Thank you to a woman that gave me everything in life and always encouraged me to pursue and succeed with a career in art. A woman who is irreplaceable. My mother. The journey continues.

‘Avengers: Endgame’: The Screenwriters Answer Every Question You Might Have
Tumblr media
This article contains spoilers for “Avengers: Endgame.”
It’s over.
With “Avengers: Endgame,” the two-movie story line that started with “Avengers: Infinity War” is finished, along with the 22-film cycle that represents the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. And some of the heroes we’ve followed on this decade-long adventure are gone, too.
In the three-hour span of “Endgame,” the Avengers confront and kill Thanos (Josh Brolin), who had used the Infinity Gauntlet to snap away half of all life in the universe. When the story resumes five years later, the Avengers are still left with their grief and remorse — until the unexpected return of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) kicks off a race back through time to retrieve the Infinity Stones before Thanos could obtain them in the first place. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sacrifices her life; a colossal battle ensues; Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) dies; and Captain America (Chris Evans) finds a way to live the life he’d always wanted, reappearing as an old man to entrust his shield to the Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
These and many other head-spinning developments in “Endgame” emerged from the imaginations of its screenwriters, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who also wrote “Infinity War.” (Both films were directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.) Markus and McFeely have been friends and collaborators since the 1990s and also wrote all three “Captain America” movies as well as “Thor: The Dark World” (with Christopher L. Yost) and created the Marvel TV series “Agent Carter.”
In a recent interview in their offices in Los Angeles, Markus and McFeely discussed the many choices and possibilities of “Endgame,” the roads not taken and the decisions behind who lived and who died. These are edited excerpts from that conversation.
Deciding the Plot Points
How did you decide where the major events of “Infinity War” and “Endgame” would fall? CHRISTOPHER MARKUS The biggest point was probably the Snap. And we realized fairly early on that if we didn’t do it at the end of the first movie, the first movie wasn’t going to have an end. And if we did it too early in the first movie, it would be a bit of an anticlimax after you’ve killed half the universe to have them stumbling around for half an hour. STEPHEN McFEELY Another big plot point is when everyone comes back. So the question is, is it early in the second movie? Late in the second movie? You notice the players left on the board are the O.G. Avengers [Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye], and let’s give them their due. It meant that we were likely going to bring people back late. So that if you were a big fan of Doctor Strange or Black Panther or Bucky [the Winter Soldier] or Sam [the Falcon], you’re only going to get a little brief window on them. It can’t be all things to all people.
How did you choose which characters would survive for “Endgame”?
MARKUS We knew we wanted to see Cap and Tony dealing with the aftermath so that you could really see them suffer, quite frankly. And that’s why Cap and Natasha are relatively minimal in the first movie, because all they’d be doing is punching. We knew that they had a lot of story in the second movie, and there were other people who would have much more story in the first movie, like the Guardians. McFEELY Thor is strangely the one that gets two movies’ worth of story. MARKUS For a guy people once thought of as boring, he’s become very useful.
“Endgame” sort of tricks you by having the heroes kill Thanos almost immediately, only to discover it doesn’t solve anything. Why was that important? McFEELY We always had this problem. The guy has the ultimate weapon. He can see it coming. It’s ridiculous. We were just banging our heads for weeks, and at some point, [the executive producer] Trinh Tran went, “Can’t we just kill him?” And we all went, “What happens if you just kill him? Why would you kill him? Why would he let you kill him?” MARKUS It reinforced Thanos’s agenda. He was done. Not to make him too Christ-like, but it was like, “If I’ve got to die, I can die now.”
There’s a lot of bleakness and despair for roughly the first hour of the movie. Did that feel like a risk for a big-event picture? MARKUS It felt less risky once I saw the reaction to “Infinity War.” You never know how you’re going to hit people, emotionally. We’ve been sitting with these events for years. We no longer have an emotional reaction. And then you see people crying in the theater. We’ve got to honor that or it’s going to feel like we’re just jerking them around. McFEELY It was the part in test screenings where people were most uncomfortable. Because you are wallowing to a degree. There doesn’t seem to be any hope. In the end of Act II for most superhero movies, maybe they lose for five minutes. Here it’s for five years. That seemed important.
And that theme of loss is continued when Scott Lang visits a memorial to the dead in San Francisco. McFEELY We used to have beats in the script where there are those in every city. Millions of names. MARKUS It’s that sense of collective trauma and the fact that if you weren’t killed, you wake up the next day — the trauma happened and I’m still here. How do we deal with this? That was the Stan Lee trick. Where’s the anxiety coming from? Now that they have Power X.
Character Arcs
How did you start to determine the trajectories for the heroes in “Endgame”? McFEELY Chris and I wrote a master document while we were shooting “Civil War,” and one of the things we were interested in exploring is, remember the What If comics? Well, this is our what if. If you lost, Thor becomes fat. Natasha becomes a shut-in. Steve becomes depressed. Tony gets on with his life. Hulk is a superhero. MARKUS Clint becomes a murdering maniac. When we were spitballing for “Endgame,” we started with, Thor’s on a mission of vengeance. And then we were like, he was on a mission of vengeance in the last movie. This is all this guy ever does! And fails, all the time. Let’s drive him into a wall and see what happens. McFEELY He just got drunk and fat.
At least the Hulk is in a better place. MARKUS There was a time when Banner became Smart Hulk in the first movie. It was a lot of fun, but it came at the wrong moment. It was an up, right when everyone else was down. McFEELY It happened in Wakanda. His arc was designed like, I’m not getting along with the Hulk, the Hulk won’t come out. And then they compromise and become Smart Hulk. MARKUS We were like, but he’s Smart Hulk in the next movie. So that diner scene [in “Endgame”], was like, O.K., how do we smash right into that without scenes of him in a lab, gene-splicing? McFEELY Oh, I wrote scenes in a lab. Now it’s just him eating pancakes and I think it generally works. MARKUS The whole thing rides on Rudd going, “I’m so confused.”
Though Ant-Man didn’t participate in “Infinity War,” we saw how the Snap affected him in the tag for “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” How did you decide to pay this off in “Endgame”? McFEELY In late 2015 they say, you’re writing the 19th movie [“Infinity War”] and the 22nd movie. So we chose to make lemonade. And that was a big moment — we figured out we can withhold Ant-Man because he’s in his own movie. And their movie is not affected until the tag, and that just gives us a place to go [in “Endgame”]. You can do this when you’re planning ahead this much. The tone is all weird, right? Because that’s a light, fun movie and then we just kill everybody in the tag.
Hawkeye took arguably the darkest turn of any hero in this series.
McFEELY He’s a good example of people who had much stronger stories after the Snap. What was the story to tell with Hawkeye in the first movie that was different than anybody else’s? Leaving his family to go fight again? Yeah, he did that in “Civil War.” The hope is that he’s killing bad people. MARKUS There was a time where we contemplated having that archery scene in the first movie, after the Snap. You snap, and then you pop up in Clint’s farm — what are we watching? — and that’s the first indication it had a wider effect. But he literally had not been in the movie prior to that point. It’s cool, but it’s going to blunt the brutality of what [Thanos] did. McFEELY Joe [Russo] said we’ll put that up front in the second one.
Once you’d seen how successful “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel” were, did you try to find more opportunities for the characters from those films? McFEELY There wasn’t a lot of time to adjust. It’s not like we could say, “Hurry, put Shuri in there.” We started [filming “Infinity War” and “Endgame”], and then “Black Panther” started, we’re still going. They finish. We’re still going. MARKUS “Panther” comes out. McFEELY When we’re doing the tests [before “Black Panther” opened], and Cap goes, “I know somewhere,” and then you cut to Wakanda, the audience goes, “Oh, that’s interesting.” But when you do those tests after the movie comes out, all you have to do is [makes drumming noises] and people freak out. Same issue with “Captain Marvel.” We shot [Brie Larson] before she shot her movie. She’s saying lines for a character 20 years after her origin story, which no one’s written yet. It’s just nuts.
MARKUS She’s been in space nearly half her life. She has obligations. McFEELY Certainly, Captain Marvel is in [“Endgame”] a little less than you would have thought. But that’s not the story we’re trying to tell — it’s the original Avengers dealing with loss and coming to a conclusion, and she’s the new, fresh blood.
Were there any Marvel characters you wanted for these movies that you couldn’t have? MARKUS We did try to put the Living Tribunal in the first movie. We wrote a scene in which he appeared during the Titan fight. And everyone was like, what? McFEELY Whoa. He’s got three heads. It would indicate a whole different level of architecture to the universe and I think that was too much to just throw in. MARKUS The idea’s still in [Marvel Studios President] Kevin [Feige]’s court. McFEELY Oh sure, we probably just spoiled it. MARKUS The Living Tribunal has his own streaming show. McFEELY It’s like “Judge Judy.”
Adventures in Time Travel
Early in “Endgame,” the movie jumps ahead five years. Was that inspired by some TV series that have also used this device? MARKUS That was what we bought ourselves by ending the last movie the way we did. We wanted it to be real and for a long time — both in movie time and in chronological time for the characters. You couldn’t end Natasha, Tony and Steve the way we do without knowing that they’ve done their time and this is taking them to the brink. McFEELY We talked about “Fargo” from the first season, where it just jumps a year. And you go, “Whaaaaat?” We hopefully get a similar reaction. MARKUS And when “Lost” had their flash forwards, you were like, how’d that happen?
Where did the idea for the time-travel story line come from? McFEELY Kevin [Feige] at one point said, I would like to use the Time Stone, or use time as an element. It let us spend a few weeks seeing what’s the kookiest thing we could do with time and not break the movie. MARKUS We all sat there going, really? We’re going to do time travel? It was only when we were looking at who we had available, character-wise; we hadn’t used Ant-Man yet. And there really is, in people’s theory of the Quantum Realm, a time thing in the M.C.U., right now, available to us, with a character we haven’t used yet. We have a loophole that’s not cheating.
It’s crucial to your film that in your formulation of time travel, changes to the past don’t alter our present. How did you decide this? MARKUS We looked at a lot of time-travel stories and went, it doesn’t work that way. McFEELY It was by necessity. If you have six MacGuffins and every time you go back it changes something, you’ve got Biff’s casino, exponentially. So we just couldn’t do that. We had physicists come in — more than one — who said, basically, “Back to the Future” is . MARKUS Basically said what the Hulk says in that scene, which is, if you go to the past, then the present becomes your past and the past becomes your future. So there’s absolutely no reason it would change.
Did you try any other approaches to the time-travel story? McFEELY In the first draft, we didn’t go back to the [original]“Avengers” movie. We went back to Asgard. But there’s a moment in the M.C.U., if you’re paying very close attention, where the Aether is there and the Tesseract is in the vault. In that iteration, we were interested in Tony going to Asgard. He had a stealth suit, so he was invisible, and he fought Heimdall, who could see him. MARKUS Thor had long scenes with Natalie Portman. And Morag [the planet where Peter Quill finds the Orb] was hugely complicated. McFEELY It was underwater! That was clever but it was just too big a set piece. What that didn’t do is allow for Thanos and his daughters to get on the trail at the right moment. So we went back to when Peter Quill was there. And we realized that when you can punch Quill in the face, it’s hilarious. I still think it’s hilarious. MARKUS There were entirely other trips taken. They went to the Triskelion at one point to get the [Tesseract], and then somebody was going to get into a car and drive to Doctor Strange’s house. McFEELY Just saying it out loud, it’s like, what are we doing? MARKUS It was when we were trying to avoid going to “Avengers” because it seemed pander-y. McFEELY We’re not always right. MARKUS The obvious ones seemed so obvious that it’s too obvious. McFEELY Eventually, Joe Russo went, why are we going to this movie when we can go to “Avengers?” Let’s make it work.
Thor recovers his hammer, Mjolnir, by taking it from an earlier timeline. So that raises the question — McFEELY Does that screw that other Thor? MARKUS Is he killed by Dark Elves? McFEELY I think we’re leaning on, when you just take a baseball mitt, you didn’t ruin that kid’s life. When you took Mjolnir, we accept that that movie happened. Because time is irrefutable. MARKUS You can make any number of what ifs. The Dark Elves would have arrived, intending to get the Aether. It’s what they came for and it was no longer there. McFEELY So they build a paradise together. MARKUS They all got married. [laughter]
There’s a surprise cameo, in the “Avengers” scene, from Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce. Did you prepare for other scenarios if Redford wasn’t available? McFEELY That was one where we thought, should it be Nick Fury? We also wrote a version for Maria Hill. That whole time, they’re announcing “Old Man With a Gun” as Redford’s last appearance on film. It’s the last time you’re going to see Robert Redford. And we’re going — [shoots conspiratorial look at Markus] [Laughter]
The Final Battle
How did Marvel feel when you told them you envisioned a massive battle royal with nearly every character from the franchise? MARKUS I think they knew it was coming. McFEELY It’s why it took so long. We shot for 200 days for two movies. MARKUS We wrote and shot an even much longer battle, with its own three-act structure.
Were there scenes you wrote for this sequence that didn’t make it into the film? McFEELY It didn’t play well, but we had a scene in a trench where, for reasons, the battle got paused for about three minutes and now there’s 18 people all going, “What are we going to do?” “I’m going to do this.” “I’m going to do this.” Just bouncing around this completely fake, fraudulent scene. When you have that many people, it invariably is, one line, one line, one line. And that’s not a natural conversation. MARKUS It also required them to find enough shelter to have a conversation in the middle of the biggest battle. It wasn’t a polite World War I battle where you have a moment.
How did you coordinate the moment where all the female Marvel heroes come together? McFEELY There was much conversation. Is that delightful or is it pandering? We went around and around on that. Ultimately we went, we like it too much. MARKUS Part of the fun of the “Avengers” movies has always been team-ups. Marvel has been amassing this huge roster of characters. You’ve got crazy aliens. You’ve got that many badass women. You’ve got three or four people in Iron Man suits.
Were there other characters you could’ve had but didn’t use? MARKUS There were moments, as they brought everybody back, where we’re like, technically, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer have [Ant-Man] suits. Do we bring them back? It became impossible to track the people we did bring back, but also, it’s just going to be an orgy. McFEELY Do you put Luke Cage in there?
Did you consider using the heroes from the Netflix TV shows, like Daredevil or Jessica Jones? McFEELY We would have to introduce these five characters — or whatever many. We already are assuming people have seen a lot of the movies. Are we really going to assume they have bought a subscription to Netflix and watched those shows enough so that when they see them, they’re going to go “yay?” MARKUS It also screws up the timelines. You would have to assume that they all got snapped away, or otherwise they might have shown up earlier. I think the only character who has come from TV to the movies is Jarvis, James D’Arcy [from “Agent Carter”].
Could you have used any of the characters that Disney obtained from the Fox acquisition, like the X-Men or Fantastic Four? McFEELY Legally, not allowed to. MARKUS I guess it’s done now but it wasn’t done then. They still have an “X-Men” movie [“Dark Phoenix,” due in June]. You can’t reboot them before they’re done. “Sorry to completely screw you.”
“Endgame” shares some unexpected parallels with “Game of Thrones,” which also recently ran episodes about its heroes preparing for a significant battle and then the battle itself. Why do you think these narratives are similar? Did you ever look at “Game of Thrones” for inspiration? MARKUS We’re in a high-stakes time and a jarring time in history, where you have to contemplate what you’re willing to do to improve the situation. Whether or not everyone’s speaking to that, or just good old-fashioned storytelling, I don’t know. McFEELY Marvel has been accused of being the most expensive television show there is, and there’s some truth to that. The genres are different, the tones are different, but it’s serialized storytelling. MARKUS We occasionally wonder, did we just make the world’s most expensive inside-baseball fan service? But then we go, the fans are actually the majority of people who come to this. It’s inside baseball, but everyone is following the baseball. That’s also why the Marvel characters have lasted this long. They’re weird. They have strange quirks. McFEELY The bland ones don’t last. MARKUS I remember “Game of Thrones” being a reference for the first movie. How far apart can you keep these strands, and for how long, and still feel like you’re telling a single narrative? “Game of Thrones” has people who are just meeting now! As much as people think the culture’s going down the drain, there seems to be an elevating of people’s estimating of the kind of narrative that will succeed in popular culture. McFEELY Whatever you think of this movie, it’s complicated. It is not another sequel. MARKUS And a lot of popular TV is complicated. “This Is Us” is complicated. “Simon & Simon” was not that complicated. Great as it was. But it does seem like there is an acceptance of more complicated forms of storytelling.
Was the three-hour running time of “Endgame” ever in question? MARKUS There was an agreement within the whole group that we’re going to take our time; we’re not going to cut a half-hour of it so we can get one more screening in per day. McFEELY We couldn’t! Where are you going to cut a half-hour? There was not a sequence you could cut. MARKUS Look at some of the most popular movies of all time. They’re long as hell. When people want to see something, it doesn’t seem to get in their way. There’s some short, totally unsuccessful movies, too.
Journey’s End
Why does Natasha Romanoff have to die? McFEELY Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back. She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that’s a thing she would trade for. The toughest thing for us was we were always worried that people weren’t going to have time to be sad enough. The stakes are still out there and they haven’t solved the problem. But we lost a big character — a female character — how do we honor it? We have this male lens and it’s a lot of guys being sad that a woman died. MARKUS Tony gets a funeral. Natasha doesn’t. That’s partly because Tony’s this massive public figure and she’s been a cipher the whole time. It wasn’t necessarily honest to the character to give her a funeral. The biggest question about it is what Thor raises there on the dock. “We have the Infinity Stones. Why don’t we just bring her back?” McFEELY But that’s the everlasting exchange. You bring her back, you lose the stone.
Was there a possible outcome where Clint Barton sacrifices himself instead of her? McFEELY There was, for sure. Jen Underdahl, our visual effects producer, read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, “Don’t you take this away from her.” I actually get emotional thinking about it. MARKUS And it was true, it was him taking the hit for her. It was melodramatic to have him die and not get his family back. And it is only right and proper that she’s done.
And Tony Stark has to die as well? McFEELY Everyone knew this was going to be the end of Tony Stark. MARKUS I don’t think there were any mandates. If we had a good reason to not do it, certainly people would have entertained it. McFEELY The watchword was, end this chapter, and he started the chapter. MARKUS In a way, he has been the mirror of Steve Rogers the entire time. Steve is moving toward some sort of enlightened self-interest, and Tony’s moving to selflessness. They both get to their endpoints.
Were there any other outcomes you considered for Tony? MARKUS No. Because we had the opportunity to give him the perfect retirement life, within the movie. McFEELY He got that already. MARKUS That’s the life he’s been striving for. Are he and Pepper going to get together? Yes. They got married, they had a kid, it was great. It’s a good death. It doesn’t feel like a tragedy. It feels like a heroic, finished life.
And Cap was always going to be allowed his happy ending with Peggy Carter? McFEELY From the very first outline, we knew he was going to get his dance. On a separate subject, I started to lose my barometer on what was just fan service and what was good for the character. Because I think it’s good for the characters. But we also just gave you what you wanted. Is that good? I don’t know. But I’ll tell you, it’s satisfying. He’s postponed a life in order to fulfill his duty. That’s why I didn’t think we were ever going to kill him. Because that’s not the arc. The arc is, I finally get to put my shield down because I’ve earned that. MARKUS A hero without sacrifice, you’re not going to get the miles out of that person that you need to for these movies. That’s what makes them a hero, it’s not the powers.
“Endgame” sets up Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. Is that a future Marvel film? Would you write that? MARKUS We really do just know what you know. They’re doing “The Eternals,” which is a property I know next to nothing about. We’ve been here, trying to set this contraption running. Were we to take another one on, you can’t increase the scope or the stakes from where we are at the moment. We’d have to shrink it back down, do an origin story. There are deep-bench characters where I’m like, if you roll that guy out, I couldn’t resist. There is a great Moon Knight movie to be made, but I don’t know what is.
You’ve been writing these films and characters for more than a decade, and you never got bored of them — McFEELY Or fired. For sure. MARKUS We’ve come close to both. It’s a testament to the concept but also the people we’re working with. We’re not bumping up against this dictatorial level where it’s like, “I have some notes. I really want to see him fly a dragon — put the dragon in. I’m going to lunch.” McFEELY If we have an idea, people take it really seriously. They valued “Winter Soldier” and they saw how “Civil War” was coming together. They’d seen our process and us working with the [Russo] brothers, and they said, if Joss [Whedon] is not coming back — I don’t know that decision — it was clear that, unless they hated us, it was going to be this team. MARKUS But there also was a possibility, because “[Avengers: Age of Ultron”] made a little bit less than “Avengers” 1 — that we were taking on “Superman” 3 and 4. Maybe people were done with it. McFEELY The goal was not to advance it to the stratosphere. It was to just not screw it up.
Is this your Marvel finale as well? MARKUS I don’t know how to follow it up, that’s the problem. I’m not quite old enough to retire.
If “Endgame” has taught us anything, it’s that you should never retire. McFEELY Then they drag you out and kill you.

Chicago Symphony Ends Its Longest Strike With Pension Change
Tumblr media
The longest strike in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 128-year history ended Saturday, when the orchestra’s musicians and board agreed to a new contract that will shift the players from their defined-benefit pension to a defined-contribution plan, similar to a 401(k).
The proposed change to the pension plan was the major sticking point in a musicians’ strike that lasted nearly seven weeks. The deal was brokered with the help of Chicago’s mayor, Rahm Emanuel, who had called the players’ union and the orchestra’s management to his office on Friday to try to break the stalemate.
The orchestra’s management had said that the existing pension plan, which guaranteed the players a set amount in retirement, had grown too costly. The players countered that the proposed alternative, in which the orchestra would put a set amount of money into individual retirement accounts, would shift investment risk to the musicians.
The two sides came up with a compromise. The orchestra’s management said that when current players switch to the new defined-contribution plan and agree to invest their retirement accounts prudently, the orchestra will guarantee that their benefits at retirement will be the same as what they would have earned under the old pension plan, which is being frozen.
That guarantee will not be available to new players: Those hired after July 1, 2020, will immediately move into the new plan, in which 7.5 percent of their base salary will be placed into retirement accounts.
The other major issue was wages. The new contract will include raises in each of the five years of the contract — of 2, 2, 2.5, 3.25 and 3.5 percent — which will bring the base salary to $181,272 in the final year, management said.
The strike attracted the attention of orchestras nationwide, which have been under pressure to curb expenses, especially during contract negotiations with their unions. While defined-benefit pensions have grown rarer in the private sector, they are still the norm among the nation’s leading orchestras. So musicians from around the country watched closely to see whether the Chicago players would succeed in protecting theirs.
The musicians’ union said in a statement that the new deal “preserves guaranteed minimum retirement benefits for current musicians and commits the parties to study options for providing retirement security for new hires.” In the past, unions have been loathe to accept contract changes that would protect current workers at the expense of new hires, fearing that such deals would create two tiers of workers in the same orchestra.
The strike was also notable for the unusual involvement of the orchestra’s revered music director, Riccardo Muti, since conductors usually avoid seeming to take sides in labor disputes. But before the strike began, Mr. Muti wrote to the orchestra’s board and management, saying, “I am with the musicians,” and he later appeared with the players on the picket line.
While Mr. Muti publicly insisted that he simply wanted the management and the board to “listen more carefully to the needs of musicians who represent one of the greatest orchestras in the world,” the symbolism was hard to miss. He is scheduled to return to the orchestra’s podium this week, which added pressure on both sides to reach an agreement.
Steve Lester, a bassist in the orchestra who was the chairman of the musicians’ negotiating committee, said in a statement that “after about a year of negotiations, we are victorious in our efforts by protecting and maintaining our secure retirement and gaining lost ground on our annual salaries.”
Helen Zell, the chairwoman of the orchestra’s board, said in a statement that the new agreement “ensures that the musicians receive the outstanding compensation they deserve” while securing the orchestra’s “long-term financial sustainability through the retirement plan transition.”

Lorde is opening up about the difficulty of maintaining a friendship with her pal Taylor Swift, and used a strange analogy to make her point clear!
“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies,” the 20-year-old entertainer told The Guardian about being friends with Taylor, 27. “There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
Taylor is often subject to tabloid scrutiny, and has rarely been photographed in the past several months. She was most recently seen hanging out with her new beau Joe Alwyn.
