3. Fool in the rain. Also quite self indulgent. Deans excuse would be that it has some of john bonham best work.

4. When the levee breaks. The vibes are impeccable. Tell me deans could resist. Also more killer drums. And harmonica. I am absolutely a sucker for good harmonica, and I WILL project.

5. In my time of dying. It’s just a good song. More vibes. Also Dean thinks that when Robert plant sings “cough” at the end its hilarious.

7. Over the hills and far away. For some reason, I feel like this and ramble on paired together are deans whole thesis. Also this is remarkably self indulgent on my part.

8. Nobody’s fault but mine. This one may be a little too personal, but it just sounds cool. And it’s a cover of a song from the 50s. I’ll explain that a little more later.

9. Whole Lotta love medley (from the bbc sessions) yes fine my entire mixtape is self indulgent. Sue me. it’s whole Lotta love, classic zep, plus like 5 covers of 50s songs added on. Plus. Travelling riverside blues is off the bbc sessions, so he obviously has access to songs not on their studio albums.

10. Celebration day. It’s so close to annoying that you either love it or hate it. Sorry but I think it’s the perfect amount of annoying for Dean.

11. Hot dog. Yes it’s fucking stupid. Im aware. I personally enjoy that this is Robert plants mental image of Texas and I think Dean would also get a kick out of it.

12. I can’t quit you baby. Where are my brokeback parallels. Huh. That’s all. Plus i think deans would have a good time bragging about how this version is far better than the one the stones did, which even had Clapton as a guest guitarist.

13. Bring it on home. Perfect album closer. And it’s a 50s cover and then jimmy page comes in with that riff and it’s perfect for led zep II and then it closes with the opening bit coming back.

(Important note: I’m convinced Dean has a thing for 50s music. Idk why. Maybe bc 50s music has a direct path to Led Zeppelin’s sound. Lots of 50s covers. Also. Didnt he put on the really old records in the biker the first time? Am i hallucinating this? Idk. I’ve just decided so.)

what songs do you think would be on the mixtape?

oh god!! u know dean spent hours making that and agonizing over which songs to choose. like “it has to be perfect; it’s for cas. the guy needs to learn about good music. i need to hint that i’m in love with him but i can’t make it obvious.” also imagine cas mentioning that he likes a song while he’s in the car with dean and it’s a led zeppelin song so dean just runs with the idea. but i digress.

1. ramble on— dean’s favorite song u just can’t convince me that this isn’t the first song

2. travelling riverside blues— dean’s other favorite song

3. when the levee breaks

4. houses of the holy

5. immigrant song

6. dazed and confused

7. stairway to heaven— it’s a classic, dean always thinks of cas when he listens to it now, dean tries not to think about how he put The makeout song on a playlist for his best friend

8. in my time of dying— maybe a little too on the nose but dean appreciates the irony

9. the rain song— this was the first song dean ever learned on the guitar, he hums it to himself when he can’t sleep

10. tangerine— it’s a beautiful song, i saw something that said it was mary’s favorite led zeppelin song and i’m sticking with that

11. fool in the rain— this is almost completely self-indulgent because i love this song, dean can’t quite explain it but something about this song reminds him of cas or maybe he just wants it to remind him of cas

12. all of my love— dean agonizes about where to put this song, he knows what he wants it to say it’s right there in the lyrics

13. thank you— it’s a beautiful song about how loving someone and having them in ur life makes everything better, u can’t tell me dean wouldn’t want cas to hear this coming from him, it’s also the perfect song to end a mixtape on

the first 10 songs are songs dean loves and thinks cas will love too. the last 3 songs are a love letter.

dean winchester listening to led zeppelin and loving them to the point where they’re clearly his favorite band says a lot about his character. i think this was a conscious decision made by kripke and the writers. it’s not like the whole vonnegut thing (i could probably talk about that for hours too). the writers really sat down and said dean winchester loves led zeppelin, he relates to their songs, he loves them enough to know almost everything there is to know about this band. it’s not an accident. he says that his favorite song is a tie between ramble on and travelling riverside blues. travelling riverside blues is off zeppelin’s album coda which was released after the band broke up. it’s got songs that they wrote but never made it onto an album. this suggests that dean’s listened to their entire discography which is to be expected. the man knows his zeppelin. there’s that scene where he’s talking to the siren and they’re playing zeppelin trivia and the questions are about who wrote and produced the songs. (which like ya gay but that’s not what this is about.) led zeppelin has so many songs that dean can relate to and connect with. they’re about love and traveling and sex and baby, i have to go and baby, i want to stay. so much of dean is in these songs. ramble on is about being unable to stay in one place and build a life. it’s about feeling the need to leave like your blood is buzzing and you can’t calm down until you’re back on the road. and that is just !! there is a reason ramble on is the zeppnatural thesis.

dean also got his music taste from john. he wanted to emulate his father. the car, the leather jacket, the music, the attitude— it’s all dean performing the image of masculinity to be like his father and make his father proud. (the gender of this is insane but we’re not doing gendernatural rn.) but led zeppelin goes beyond this for dean. john and mary fell in love over zeppelin. he has an emotional attachment to it in a positive and loving way. led zeppelin is literally a love language for dean, but it’s also just a language. he uses led zeppelin to communicate to others (the mixtape) and even to himself.

i won’t get too much into music theory here. mostly because i am completely unqualified. but i will say that zeppelin has a very specific sound. there is something unique in the way jimmy page plays the guitar. zeppelin has these long guitar solos and pure instrumental parts that are unlike anything else i have ever heard. (yes, i know that led zeppelin is influenced by/ripped off black, blues, and folk music.) there’s something very dynamic and almost transient about led zeppelin’s music. combine that with lyrics dean can relate to and you have pretty much the best road trip playlist you can get. and zeppelin songs are long. the winchesters are stuck in a car driving for hours. this is the kinda thing you put on and want to listen to when you’re driving for hours. imagine how many memories dean has of his father and his brother in the impala with led zeppelin as the background music. led zeppelin is family to dean.

led zeppelin is an intentional, purposeful, and telling aspect of dean as a character.

this ask!!! so i’m gonna do like spn as a whole but it works with the episode houses of the holy too (that episodes lives rent free in my head)

let me take you to the movies/can i take you to the show/let me be yours ever truly/can i make your garden grow the first and last verses in the songs are the same. i think they represent everything sam and dean (and every other character in this goddamn show) can’t have in a (primarily) romantic relationship. it’s a normal relationship with dates and support and a home. i’m now kinda thinking that the first time it’s sung is like sam and dean circa season 1/2 where they want this and still think that maybe, just maybe, they can still have it. and the second time it’s sung it’s like season 15 sam and dean realizing they’re never going to have the white picket fence life, but they can have a (mostly) healthy romantic relationship within the life they’ve built, sam with eileen and dean with cas.

from the houses of the holy/we can watch the white doves go/from the door comes satan’s daughter/and it only goes to show/you know this is a sam verse. sam who believes in God and prays every day and has unwavering faith (houses of the holy episode baby), but it still lucifer’s vessel. every time sam tries to get close to the divine and the holy he just gets the devil. insert lucifer’s line from season 11 about how it was never God and it was always him.

there’s an angel on my shoulder/in my hand a sword of gold/let me wander in your garden/and the seeds of love i’ll sow/you know dean verse! dean, the soldier, the michael sword, the righteous man, who wants nothing more than a quiet life with a family. i’m not saying deancas, but i’m totally saying deancas. if i think about this anymore my brain will liquify so ur only getting vibes on this one.

so the world is spinning faster/are you dizzy when you stall?/let the music be your master/will you heed the master’s call/oh... satan man this screams season 4 sam. the demon blood addiction, ruby’s manipulation, letting lucifer out of the cage! it’s all there! but ruby being the music and sam’s master and then lucifer being the master whose call sam has to heed!! that is so good i can’t even express it. 

said there ain’t no use in crying/cause it will only, only drive you mad/does it hurt to hear them lying?/was this the only world you had? this reminds me of season 5 dean. dean is still messed up post-hell. he had to deal with sam’s betrayal (in his eyes) with the demon blood and ruby. and now he has to bottle up all his crap so he can literally save the world.

ugh!! i know i just did a weird version of a lyric analysis, but i’m hoping u got at least some of what u wanted from that. i know i promised by dean x zeppelin thesis a while ago and i haven’t done it yet, but i swear i’m working on it!! it might help if i like break it down a bit and do separate songs like this. anyway, this is episode one of zeppnatural.

in terms of like vibes, the song is upbeat but the lyrics have a certain almost cynical romanticism to them with heavy religious allusions. which just like the thesis of supernatural. it plays with the juxtaposition of christian faith (love, angels, Church) and temptation of the Devil (sexuality and the use of Satan). the song is truly about loving someone in a pure sense and also desiring them carnally. so yes, it compares to spn in a way that makes my brain melt.
