Starry Starry Night - Akiko Valentina constantly wished that she’d take that advice to heart for once in her life. Growing up, it seemed like every wish she’d make would come true. Life should’ve been a breeze… and it was for a while. Her family had won the lottery a few years ago, along with her mother’s seaweed gin distillery taking off which brought the Valentina Family even more fortune. Classes would be cancelled, boys asked her to the dance, her favourite TV shows would suddenly be back even when they were cancelled whenever she seemed to will it. Though, like a bad 90s kids horror series, there was always a cruel twist at the end.

Eidolons and Eudaemonia -Eudaimonia is a world where each country worships a particular element. Each country has a temple and a candle that must be lit at all times to prevent a calamity. what artists most influence the music u make?

This is such a cool question! I feel like a legitimate music person HOW COOL.

Anyways, so I guess my initial artistic inspiration for music, or at least the most interesting visuals that accompanied music was when I kind of accidentally stumbled upon Bjork when I was 14. I had never heard music like that before, and I had never seen someone actually make daring attempts to express a feeling in their visuals (videos, costumes, etc) in a genuine way. Sure, I knew all about Lady Gaga but there was always an air of self-possession about her that was unappealing. Up until this point I thought that Green Day was the absolute zenith of punk (WHAT A GODDAMN IDIOT I WAS). Anyways, then from there I kind of discovered Siouxsie Sioux, and world music (Indian, Turkish, Gaelic, etc) as well as soundtracks from movies, such as The Secret Garden (my favorite movie and such a damn good soundtrack). Then I found The Smiths and got in a dark 80s trap that still consumes my soul. Yes. I also got into goth stuff and then, of course, I had to educate myself on all the music that inspired the mindset that had attracted me, which did mean a lot of foraging amongst the heap of psychedelic, dark goth music of the 80s and 90s. Before that, my parents had exposed me to a ton of folk/country music, so I have and will always greatly appreciate that kind of music. I also play the viola and violin and am currently in a quartet (I am the worst player by far and that is primarily why I play viola lol). I also ended up teaching myself how to play the guitar and began writing down little songs and poems, as I had always done. However, I didn’t really know how to make music and it was a really slow process as to how to create original material. I was given a guitar for my 13th birthday and didn’t know how to play it until this past year, when I literally sat down and forced myself to go through the grueling beginner progress. I’m still not great, but I can get by. Also, for some reason, I got an electric guitar and an electric bass from a family friend. It’s nice being friends with rich people (otherwise I totally wouldn’t have been able to afford it). I figured out how sampling worked and just kind of had a ball making shitty songs entirely by myself. So yes, I really have such a long goddamn way to go, so I try not to be too hard on myself about it. I am really hard on myself about music, however. I think that was from a long line of bad music teachers who taught me to feel deep shame whenever I played anything incorrectly. Kind of strange, huh?
