☾ So, I hesitated writing this for a number of reasons, but I decided I don't care. Hozier has a new song, April has me face down in the mattress with how hard it's fucked me and I just want to write about a Link near and and dear to my heart.

☾ Mario Kart Link.

☾ He's just a silly lil goober who's always having a good time. Especially when I play as him because what is second place? He'll never know.

☾ I know, canonically, both are Skyward Sword! Link and Breath of the Wild! Link. I do not care.

☾ Because come with me, sinner, as we explore a whole new world. A world where Mario Kart isn't a silly lil game. It's an empire.

☾ Like Fast and the Furious (I think, idk I never watched any of them). OR like sk8 the infinity at S. I do know that one.

☾ There are real things at stake here. It's intense, and it's heavy.

☾ Here, give me a break while I do some worldbuilding here. Mystery blocks are still a thing, they work by magic idk, except getting hit by one of those things is devastating. It's why the newcomers don't last long.

☾ All the main screen players (Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Inkling boy, etc.) are high level racers. They are A-listed and the ones you look out for if you see them in the lineup.

☾ Including Link himself. He drives a motorcycle he named Epona, which he built himself from scratch.

☾ I spent a lot of time (three minutes) trying to figure out a clever nickname for him, and then I saw some of the names other people gave their Linksona's and, while there's nothing wrong with them, I quickly realized I was overthinking things.

☾ It's mostly a stage name, his name is Link and outside of the raceway, he goes by it.

☾ But, for shits and giggles, and point of discerning him from the others, I don't care. Call him ratchet, greaser, racer, cypher, tank, axel, sparks. I'm giving you all the freedom! Me? Personally? I'm going to call him:

☾ Neo- a combining form meaning “new,” “recent,” “revived,” “modified,”

☾ Great I gave you some background, let's get into the fun parts.

☾ Neo, where do we begin with you.

☾ Have y'all read A Court of Mist and Fury? You know Rhysand?

☾ He's Cassian coded.

☾ LMAO You thought.

☾ He's a fun, kind-of guy but when shit gets real, he can shift from zero to a hundred like that.

☾ He'll be laughing with a newbie, patting them on the shoulder, but the second that visor comes down, he's unrecognizable. He's an A-lister for a reason.

☾ He's infamous for taking shortcuts that are insanely dangerous. He's almost always bandaged somewhere, but not his pretty boy, play bunny face.

☾ So Cassian and Lightning McQueen.

☾ He's totally the kind to shoot a wink and a flirty wave, spend the night and then be gone by morning. Or have them escorted out by his Zelda in the morning, Tony Stark style

☾ He's a selfish lover, but make no mistake about it. His partner gets their end. That's right. I said lover. He's fucked bowser.

Hero of the Dunes AU

Link travels through the woods without a weapon, and then finds himself roped into a business deal

Chapter 4: The Worth of a Weapon

The first night out in the wild was… an adventure to say the least. Link was embarrassed that nothing actually happened.

He had been so prepared all night to be ambushed by the mysterious woman who attacked him in the Soul Temple, or to be jumped by monsters that every creaking branch and movement set his nerves on edge all over again.

It didn’t help that the roots and rocks and fallen branches of the area were always too close, despite the way he’d cleared out his sleeping area just the way he and Rift used to when they would stay outside to sleep on clear nights.

He hardly slept at all, and when the sun finally rose he dragged himself off of the ground and stared at the nearby stream in distaste for the morning.

Still, he washed up as well as he could before checking his rupee pouch for the millionth time just to make sure his little pink crystal was still hidden inside.

 Still there, right where I left it. Why does a part of me feel like it should’ve all been a dream? 

He sighed and pushed to his feet, much less enthusiastic for the day with the way his eyes burned.

When he reached the road, the grunting snuffles of monsters stopped him in his tracks. He backtracked into the bushes and peeked through the leaves.

Three bokoblins stood on the road, snuffling and pacing as though they were waiting for something.

 Voice said they’d be hunting me. 

The same thought from his sleepless night turned his blood to ice. They were waiting for him.

He clenched his teeth and backed further away. Foolish to know of such danger and not being a weapon of some kind… not that he had the rupees to afford something as expensive as a sword anyway.

Even his hunting bow or slingshot would be better than nothing at all.

His gaze caught on a good sized stick and he snatched it off the ground, deftly snapping off the unruly branches that would slow any attacks he was forced to make with the branch.

 This’ll have to do. Just have to hope I don’t run into any monsters. 

He crouched and worked his way quietly through the undergrowth, avoiding the road but still moving in the same direction.

He would make it to Kakariko today. There wouldn’t be any monsters in the town, so at least until he set out for the temple, he’d be safe.

Maybe he could find some weapon he could afford while he was there.

He grimaced even as he had the thought. His rupee pouch was notably light.

 Great. 

Link ducked behind a tree trunk just before the bokoblin in the bushes ahead turned to face his direction. His heart pounded in his chest and his head ached.

If he was out here in the open much longer, the monsters were bound to find him. Blocking the path to the village as they were, they were setting a trap where the moment he was spotted they could call an army down on his head.

He pressed a hand to his temple and worried his lower lip. Papa and Rift were always playing strategy games with him, half the adventures he and his brother pretended to go on involved battles and soldiers. He should be able to figure something out…

 If they’re trying to block me out of the town, then the bokoblins could be spread throughout the entirety of the forest. There may be no way around… 

That of course was the main issue, seeing as his weaponless state made avoid and evade the best tactics he could think of.

He shifted and pressed his back harder against the tree. He had to get to Kakariko, and he didn’t want a mob of monsters following him there.

He looked down at his feet where the stick in his hand dug into the earth near his toes. A few pebbles and stones scattered along the forest floor along with fallen branches and sprouting plants.

An idea popped into his head.

It was probably stupid. It was probably dangerous.

He leaned around the tree to peer at the bokoblin again, marking its location, then he knelt cautiously to pick up a small handful of stones.

 Mama’d kill me if she knew what I was about to do.  Without more thought on the matter than that, Link lobbed the handful into the green just beyond his hiding spot.

The bokoblin spun around like its whole body had been tugged.

Link ducked further behind the tree at the scattering of the pebbles. He clutched his branch tight and lifted it off the ground, holding it at the ready.

The bokoblin was moving toward him. Or more accurately, toward the noise he’d made beyond his hiding spot.

Link held his breath to keep the sound at bay in the pressing tension.

A second ticked by. Then another.

Then the bokoblin’s body came into view, sniffing at the air beyond his tree and completely clueless of the danger hiding just a foot away.

Link swung.

The monster only had a second to recognize the movement to its side as a threat before it was  thwacked  painfully over the head.

It grunted as its body fell limp to the floor. Link dropped down to check it over for weapons, but only found a small rusted dagger.

He grit his teeth, but he took it all the same.  Better than nothing. 

His heart pounded in his head. Told him to run, that monsters would be on his trail in seconds, even if his mind knew he’d successfully—and more importantly  quietly  —dealt with the threat.

Still he ended up jogging the rest of the way to the village. His head pounded with his lack of sleep and his exertion, but he stepped into the safe streets of Kakariko at last and his shoulders slumped in relief at the sight.

He’d only visited Kakariko on occasions, usually for festivals. Their neighboring town was much larger than their own. Booths lined one street, while carnival games that ran year round showed their tempting offers on brightly painted signs.

An inn and a grocery shop both hung their signs close to the entrance of the village, and there was so much space and likely a lot of traffic passing through this way, that he wouldn’t be surprised if there were two more on the other side of town.

The sound of cuccos drifted through the air along with the low and constant murmur of conversation.

He hesitated near the inn, but it was still light out, and… he pressed his fingers over his rupee pouch, but no more had magically appeared at his need.

Nevermind. Weapons were more important anyway.

He marched past the signs and toward the merchant alley instead, pausing at the sheer  volume  of booths. He’d expected it to be less on a regular day rather than a carnival, and while traffic was decreased, it wasn’t as much as he’d expected.

Kakariko was just all around huge.

A part of him wanted to explore. To go and try out the games and see what he could win. He kept himself on track instead, examining the stalls as he passed and shaking his head when pushy salesmen tried to draw him to their wares that he definitely  didn’t need .

He paused at a surprising stall. Every shelf had a different kind of adventure supply and he stared wide-eyed at the sword and shield on display.

“Oh, hello!” The merchant said, slapping his hands on his desk and standing from his stool. “I see you’ve taken an interest in my wares!”

His excitement was equal to Link’s surprise at finding such a young man running the shop. By how he worded it, it didn’t really sound like he was looking over it for his parents, but he couldn’t be older than Link himself, and he was barely  technically  considered an adult at fifteen as it was.

“Do you see something that interests you? Something to your liking? We’re running a great sale today, if you’re interested!” A loose strand of dark hair that was otherwise all pulled back fell into his face and he quickly swiped it away. “Everything I have to offer is the best quality and you won’t be disappointed if you invest in some of my adventurer’s gear! All of it is dearly important for the life of a traveler in this increasingly dangerous time!”

Link pressed his lips together. The onslaught of words and sales pitches were making his headache worse, much like the merchants constant shouting volume, like he was talking to a crowd and not the single civilian within ten feet of his particular stall.

“Have a look at this sling! It’s all the rage with young travelers these days. Good enough to keep bokoblins away while keeping a safe distance yourself!” He swung the sling in mock circles over his head a few times before he set it down and gestured wildly at the shelf behind him. “Or- or I’ve got bottles imported from the Gerudo Desert itself! Sturdy and reliable, the glass has been formed to perfection and will hold anything you need!”

“How much for your sword?” Link asked when the merchant paused to search out another item.

“My sword?” The merchant’s eyes bugged and he spun to look at it before looking at Link again, running his eyes from head to foot as if sizing him up. “You want a  sword?” He blinked precisely three times and didn’t wait for Link to answer before he slapped his cheek and started up again. “Well of course you want a sword! And who wouldn’t, seeing this fine craftsmanship? It was forged for a knight and gifted to me after a very trying experience and though I do hold it close to my heart, I would be willing to part with it for an even two hundred rupees.”

“Two hun-“ Link’s eyes blew wide and he took an involuntary step back as his face burned. He knew for a fact he didn’t have more than twenty, if even that.

The merchant definitely noticed the reaction. He cringed and turned to look at Link full on again. “I really can’t sell it for less or I’d try to lower the price for you. Maybe something else might interest you instead…?”

Link mutely pointed toward the sling, his face burning. Two hundred rupees! He knew swords were expensive, but he’d never tried to buy one himself. His family could live off of that for a whole season!

The merchant set the sling back onto the counter and his smile was a little less oppressively wide this time. “Fifty rupees for you, my friend.”

By the way he said it, it was a lower price than usual. His ears tingled with the heat of embarrassment. He couldn’t afford any of this! “Ah, um, thanks. I-I don’t think I need it after all.” He ducked his head and turned to go.

That’s what he got for staring. He wasted the merchant’s time and got his own hopes up for nothing. He couldn’t even afford a little sling! Stealth and branches were going to be his best friends from now on, it seemed.

“Wait! Come back a second!”

He turned at the merchant’s voice to find the boy leaning over his desk and beckoning him back with both hands.

That was honestly worse. Link cringed and glanced around at the people passing by and giving them strange looks. He hurried back to the adventure merchant’s stall just to get him to stop making a scene.

“I can tell you have a particular need,” the merchant said, lowering his voice and losing the salesman smile he had been wearing before. “I’d like to help if I could, but I really can’t be parting with my wares for less than they’re worth.”

 Then why did you call me back here? To humiliate me all over again? 

“However, if you really are the adventuring type like you…” he notably avoided looking at Link’s clothes. “…look, then maybe we can strike a deal.”

Link blinked at him. “What kind of deal?”

The merchant waved a hand back at his stall. “I’m always on the look out for rare or pretty items I might be able to sell. If you’re short on rupees, I’d be willing to trade some of my goods for something of equal or greater value. Something you can’t use but  I  can sell.”

Link’s fingers dug into the fabric of his rupee pouch, finding the delicate form of the Soul’s Voice inside. “I… don’t have anything like that to trade.”

The merchant twisted his lips, but he was persistent, Link would give him that. “But you are going on an adventure, right?”

Link hesitated before nodding.

“Then surely you’ll have things to trade soon enough! I have a need for a supplier, so I’d be happy to take you on if you can bring me things worth my time.”

Link shifted on his feet. “And then I could trade for the weapons?”

“You have my word!” The merchant pressed a hand to his heart and raised the other over his head. “It’s just good business, after all!” Then he scrambled back from the table and set the sling on it between them again. “As a matter of fact, as a show of my good faith in you and your willingness to accept my deal, I’d be willing to give you this sling as a loan, just until you bring me something to trade of the same worth.”

“How could you be sure I wouldn’t just take it and leave?”

The merchant raised his eyebrows at him, but there wasn’t so much mirth in his eyes when he said the next words for Link to believe he was really joking. “I travel all around Hyrule, and even some other lands. It wouldn’t be a hard matter to hunt you down and take what is mine.”

Link stared at him until the boy broke a smile and held the sling out for him. “Deal?”

Link swallowed. His family’s debts were already piling up, and fifty rupees was no small sum.

But if there was anything Papa taught him, it was that a weapon or defense of some kind was crucial when heading into dangerous territory. With all the monsters he’d seen around, looking for him, could he really afford not to take the sling?

He found himself making the exchange and returning the merchant’s smile hesitantly. “Deal.”

Summary: When plans are interrupted you find yourself with some skulltulas. Thankfully you reunite with the chain, unfortunately the reunion dosen’t last as long as you want.

(Aka: Spooky meets the chain and Warriors wouldn't let me give him a gentle realization... also Sky is have a Bad time at the end (off screen but you'll see why)

Dark sits in the shadows with his darling lamb, watching excitedly as Onyx's plan takes effect. He watches wave after wave of increasingly difficult monsters swarm the damnable heroes.

"What do you think, my dearest viper?" Onyx asks as they lean their head onto his shoulder.

Dark gives a vicious grin that's far more like a shark than a hylian. "Your cruelty is unmatched."

"Flattery will get you everywhere," Onyx purrs in a voice like honey covered blades.

Dark chuckles, pressing a kiss to their forehead.

There's the sound of a scream from a monster and a few curses.

"Perhaps a few more lynels?" Onyx muses to themselves.

"Why not draw it out?" Dark suggests.

"Oh, I am."

There's a ripple of light magic that reeks of Hylia. A shift in the world as a portal opens.

Dark growls lowly, "I sent them away!"

Onyx frowns, looking up at him. "What?"

"The Golden Bitch herself sent (Y/n) here."

"No," Onyx hisses.

"Would I lie to you?"

Onyx mutters darkly and pulls on their magic to call off the other waves. Of course Hylia is able ruin everything. She's very good at it.

Dark is quick to pull at his own magic to try to get the more dangerous monsters away for the moment.

There's urgency neither wants to examine. They don't have time for it anyway.

Stupid Hylia, always ruining their fun.

"Demise curse it," Onyx sneers.

There's an urgency to it that neither wants to examine. It's not any personalized attachment it's just buissness.

The monsters that were practically queuing up are sent to other times without a thought.

"I really hate geozards," Wind groans from his fight.

Onyx snickers, "Good."

Dark sighs, "If only this wasn't interrupted."

"Come on, we should get out of here before they finish these off," Onyx sighs.

They both stand, and Dark snags his darling lamb's hand with a grin.

Onyx lets him drag them away, running after him as they keep their fingers lacing together. They aren't looking to be separated again.

"You got those skulltulas, right?" Onyx asks.

"Maybe!" Dark calls as he sinks them through the shadows and into a place far enough away to not see the heroes.

He's had enough of their faces.

"I'm sure it'll be fine," Onyx says, mostly to assure themselves.

You don't sleep well the night after you go through the portal alone. Spooky is a reassurance, but making camp by yourself in a strange place is... not your favorite.

Morning comes to chase away the dreams of a past you aren't ready to fully delve into yet. Phantom touches almost linger, but they are easy to brush aside.

Knowing for sure that you are the Hero's Soulmate is strange. Soulmates are such a strange concept, at least to you.

How can you be that lucky? To have a perfect match every lifetime?

Knowing you've lived multiple lives in this world is even stranger.

It explains a lot, though.

Is the fact that you're both Link's soulmate and someone who's lived a dozen or more lives in Hyrule account for you being so heavily drawn to the Legend of Zelda?

Does it make your fascination forgivable?

You can't say.

You aren't sure it matters...

But now that you accept the truth, you are remembering more and more. To the point you are ready to go shake your past lives because who is that far gone on some man? (You are, apparently.)

Breakfast isn't anything fancy, just a little bit of the rations you got from older Wind. It's enough to keep you going though, and that is always a plus.

("Breakfast is important, Sunshine!" An older teen with sandy hair defends as he presses your favorite meal into your hands because he knows you've been so busy you are forgetting to eat sometimes.)

After you eat, you start walking again, following Spooky.

Spooky seems to have a destination in mind, moving around confidently.

Every once in a while, they pounce on a leaf or make a low chitter sound at a bird they can't reach.

It's adorable in the 'kitty!' sense.

(Who knew ambush predators could be so sweet? Oh, that's right, every cat person ever.)

Walking alone where you have no idea where you are and the knowledge monsters could be anywhere is awful. You think you prefer the tension that the boys have going on. At least they also provide security and extra swords.

There's a deep empathy for each of your ... the ... your boys. (They are your boys, though, aren't they?)

Each of them have been alone like this, especially Wild, Sky, and Hyrule.

Spooky rubs against you as if sensing that you need to come out of your mind to focus on your surroundings.

It's probably a mile or two in that you hear hissing and clicking.

Oh shit.

That can't be a skulltula... right?

You turn to the right and catch sight of a good five skulltulas. Two in the trees and one on the ground.

Great.

You know what's worse than one giant evil spider?

Five.

Five giant evil spiders are worse.

These are so much more terrifying in person.

"Well... fuck," You groan.

Is running an option?

You hesitate too long.

The spiders are already almost to you.

Fuck.

("Skulltulas are the worst," an older teen bemoans to you as you comb your fingers through his hair. "Getting them off walls is still in my nightmares.")

How are you even supposed to flip these things to get to their weak spot?

You step back a little to create some more space and grab your sword.

Spooky growls low and long, tail swishing as they stand at your side.

The fight is a blur. Half instinct and half clumsy inexperience leads to what is probably a weird show.

Dodge.

Kick.

Strike.

Deflect.

Pain laces through your leg at a branch ripping into the skin.

Blood.

Spooky flips a skulltula with a growl.

You plunge your sword into the beasts weak spot.

It dissapears in a shrieking hiss and puff of dark magic.

"Good kitty!" You call.

The fight goes on like this.

You keep the attention, dodging and sometimes stumbling, while Spooky waits to ambush and flip them over.

You finish off the last skulltula with a victorious cry.

As soon as you finish the last spider off, you look to Spooky.

"Good kitty!" You declare again.

Spooky sits down and starts panther bath time.

Which is probably a good plan.

You put your sword and shield back where they go before taking stock of your own injuries.

There's the cut on your shin, shallow but painful and bleeding.

There's quite a few bruises.

Wincing, you press your fingers to a sore spot on your bicep. The bruise there isn't any fun but you'll live.

You could use potion from Legend, but you don't want to waste it on something like this. There's something in your mind that says you need to save it for something worse.

("If we're ever separated and you're low on supplies, you should try to conserve potions and faries, firefly," a man says gently as he wraps you in his arms. "I hate to say it, but still...")

These half memories are driving you up a wall, and they don't even have a license to drive. It feels like there should be commercials for a class action lawsuit.

You sigh, reaching into your pack for your water and some bandages.

You'll have to clean it better later, but for now, clean water to rinse and sterile bandages is better than leaving it open to the elements.

You rinse the cut and wrap bandages around it. You tie off the bandages before putting everything else away.

By the time you're ready to move more, Spooky is sniffing the air. They sniff the air the way that cats do when they smell something they want.

Oh?

Spooky starts walking into the trees before they stop and look back to you.

Well, who are you to ignore them?

You follow them into the trees.

Spooky leads you through the forest with insistent looks and lashing tail. They seem antsy about moving to wherever they are leading you, and after the ambush of skulltulas, you are eager to follow.

Stupid spiders.

"Where are you bringing me?" You ask as you duck under a branch.

Spooky stops, tossing you a look as their tail lashes a little faster.

"Oh, come on, Spooky, I'm exhausted. I hate those stupid spiders."

Spooky lets out a crooning sound and levels you a look.

You laugh, reaching the panther and scratching behind Spooky's ear. "Thank you for saving me, pumpkin."

Spooky rubs up into your palm before they stand and start walking again.

They walk a little slower this time, leading you until you are just before a clearing and you can hear voices.

Oh...

Did Spooky just bring you back to the boys?

Bad kitty!

(You don't mean that Spooky is an angel.)

Well, if this is how things are going to be... at least you won't be the only one with a sword now.

(And if you are honest... it's sort of a nice idea to stay with your boys and get to know them again.)

Spooky sits in the treeline, waiting for you.

You huff, breaking through the trees, "Really? This is what you wanted me to see?"

The entire chain has stopped what they're doing to look over.

Several go still.

At least six pairs of eyes go wide.

Wind gasps, calling your name excitedly.

You wave, "Hey, sailor."

Epona neighs happily before trotting away from where Twilight is brushing her and over to you.

Spooky sits just behind the treeline, watching.

You gasp, hugging Epona happily when she reaches you. "Sweetheart!"

Epona huffs affectionately, bumping her muzzle along your shoulder.

You happily fish out an apple to pass to the mare. You hear the youngest snicker at the sight.

"What are you doing here?" Wind asks as he joins you and Epona. "What happened to your leg?"

"Spooky lead me here after some skulltulas got the drop on us." You wave off, stepping to the side but still petting Epona.

You don't want to come off as weak or childish... and really... there are worse monsters.

("Don't downplay your feelings just because others might have it worse. Your experiences matter, my love," a man with a green headband and mossy eyes says as he presses a kiss to your cheek.)

"Skulltulas?" Legend asks tightly. "Are you okay?"

"Spooky?" Wind asks.

"Yes, I'm fine - oh!" You glance around realizing that Spooky hasn't come out. Well, now, that is just rude. You call out, "Spooky, here kitty kitty kitty!"

"A cat?" Twilight perks up.

Wild and Hyrule also seem curious.

Spooky stalks out and runs themselves to you on the side opposite of Epona before going to sniff Wind.

"That is not a cat!" Legend tenses immediately, eyes wide.

"Get that - thing 'way from Epona!" Twilight hisses, rushing towards his horse.

"Wind get back here." Warriors says sharply.

Wind laughs, letting Spooky sniff him. The boy seems fairly unbothered and almost seems to feel a rush of delight.

Twilight grabs Epona's reigns and tries to tug the mare away only to be met with an unwilling to move horse.

"Hey now, Spooky is a good kitty." You say, reaching out to pet the panther.

"That's not a cat!" Twilight manages.

Several others make sounds of agreement.

Time looks like he's silently praying.

Sky looks ready to laugh or cry.

Four is not looking at you, fists clenching so tightly his knuckles are white.

Legend still hasn't let his muscles relax.

Spooky rubs along Wind happily before circling around to sniff Epona.

Twilight gets between Spooky and Epona, hand on the hilt of his sword.

"Hey! You hurt my cat, and I have to break your legs." You say sharply, genral animal love over riding any dislike for conflict you may have.

"If yer- pet hurts Epona-" Twilight grits out.

"Spooky won't."

"That thing -"

Spooky slips by Twilight and weaves between Epona's legs, purring as they rub up on the mare.

"What in blazes?" Twilight gapes.

"Good kitty!" You clap.

Spooky weaves around to you again, sitting at your side. Their tail lashes as if daring the chain to comment further.

"Where'd you find Spooky?" Wind asks with bright eyes.

"Spooky found me, walked right up to me in town while I was sitting outside. They like napping on me."

"D'ya have some sorta magic over animals?" Twilight wonders

"No?"

"Let me get this straight," Sky says slowly, his voice tight as he walks over. "Some stray panther came up to you in the middle of a town, and you- let it nap on you now?"

The wood carver looks like you could push him over by blowing on him.

"Yes. You can't move a sleeping cat," you say as if this is obvious.

Really thought that's just one of the rules of being a cat lover.

"That is a panther!" Legend calls with a straining voice.

"Big cat." You shrug.

"Predator!" Warriors groans.

"Hylia, help us," Four manages weakly.

You wave them off. "Spooky is a good kitty. They helped me kill giant evil spiders."

Spooky preens as if they understand that they're being praised.

"You're my hero." Wind informs you breathlessly.

"What? Why?"

"I want a pet panther."

"I think I'm Spooky's pet." You laugh.

Spooky just starts purring.

Wind laughs, too.

"Wind no one is getting you a panther," Warriors grits out lowly.

Wild is creeping over now, staring at Spooky with bright eyes.

Ah, yes, champion of the wilds... of course, he wants to meet the big cat.

He's always so good with animals.

("That is a bear - why are you trying to register a bear at my stable?" A man demands as someone with a bow on their back grins down at him.)

Spooky looks to Wild and yawns.

"We are not keeping a panther," Time says as he pinches the bridge of his nose.

You frown immediately, "Why not? Spooky's a good kitty."

"We don't keep wild animals as pets," Time sighs.

"He's right," Twilight agrees immediately.

Warriors crosses his arms, "Panthers are dangerous."

"You guys keep Wolfie," You protest on instinct despite knowing the wolf in question is really just Twilight.

It's maybe a little underhanded, but you really want to keep Spooky!

Also, it's probably easier for everyone if you aren't separated since Spooky dosen’t like that.

Stretching the truth still feels a little weird...

You've committed, though.

"That's different," Twilight defends quickly.

To be fair to him, it is different.

"Spooky is friendly! They kill monsters, they hunt their own food, they're a good gaurd cat," You reason.

Warriors just stares at you with the most deadpan look to date. "That is a wild animal."

"Preadators are horrible pets," Legend grits out.

"Still think I might be Spooky's pet," you shrug.

Hyrule bites his lip before he mutters something to himself. Looking somewhere between amusement and disappointment.

"Not better," Four manages finally.

Wind rolls his eyes, "Spooky seems fun!"

"We can't just keep a panther," Four says as he stares at the panther in question.

"Counter point," Hyrule pipes up, "How are you going to get rid of a panther that's adopted someone?"

The others all fall silent, trying to take this question in. It's a good question.

How do you separate a panther from their person?

Wild manages to kneel by Spooky and begins petting them. A soft, wondrous smile spreads on his face.

You smile softly, "See? Spooky's sweet! Isn't that right, pumpkin?"

Spooky gives a low rumble.

"Farore on a stick," Legend groans, earning himself several dirty looks.

"Spooky's a good kitty. They helped me kill skulltulas! And you saw that they like Epona!" You coax, repeating several earlier points.

Spooky is purring now, happy to lean into Wild's hands.

Twilight just stares at you with a face that a mix between resignment, fondness, grief, and exhaustion.

"If this goes poorly we get rid of Spooky," Time sighs.

Sky, Legend, and Four look distinctly sea sick.

Warriors looks like he might scream.

"Yes!" Wind beams.

You smile at the kid, trying to ignore the fact that you know his future. That's a weird thought.

At least you know he lives through this.

"Yer sure Spooky is friendly?" Twilight asks, something weighty in the words.

"To us? Absolutely!" You say firmly.

Twilight frowns but he steps closer.

He steps close enough to hold a hand out to Spooky.

Oh!

Oh yeah!

Twilight is a cat person.

("The barn cat had kittens today 'n they're cuter than a bug in a rug, darlin'!" A man grins at you as he takes your hand, alreadytuggingyou towards the barn.)

Spooky sniffs the hand and then nudges it with their nose.

Twilight steps closer again and starts petting their face gin slow and cautious movement.

A smile starts to creep up on his face. Something deep in your soul soothes at the image. He has a nice smile.

(You miss it.)

You glance around the others while Twilight, Wild, and Wind love on Spooky.

Warriors and Time stand together now, discussing something in tight tones.

Legend and Hyrule sit together and keep eyeing Spooky. Hyrule seems curious, but Legend looks ready to run.

Sky and Four are also eying Spooky, but Sky seems curious in addition to weary.

You frown.

Legend looks ready to absolutely bolt, and Four doesn't look much better.

Oh.

Right.

Minish and rabbits are technically prey.

Fairies are hit or miss...

Four won't look at you.

It makes your heart writhe and flail miserably, but it's obvious enough. Four doesn't want anything to do with you just now.

It hurts to know he dosen’t want to speak with you, but that's his right.

You move away from Spooky and the three males who are loving the panther up and start towards Legend and Hyrule.

Legend looks to you with wide eyes when you stop before him and Hyrule.

"Are you two okay?" You ask.

"Uh- fine!" Hyrule says way too fast.

"Just... not a fan of wild animals..." Legend manages faintly.

You smile softly, fondness you aren't ready to examine the origin of seeping into your being. "It's going to be okay. Spooky won't attack, and if for whatever reason they do, I'll stop them."

Legend swallows hard, "Don't do that. It's fine..."

"Hey, it's going to be okay, I pro-" You start only for Hyrule to interrupt.

"No promises!" Hyrule yelps as he grips his tunic in both hands tightly.

"Okay?" You manage, more confusion than anything.

Oh.

Promises.

Like in the dream.

("Honeybee, you have to be very, very careful when you interact with the Fae," an older teen says as he holds your hand in both of his. "You can't make Promises with a fairie. That's so dangerous... even if it's me.")

"Just... I don't like Promises." Hyrule says softer, looking away.

"Okay, that's okay. I didn't mean to upset you. I'm sorry. It will be okay, though. Spooks is a sweetheart."

"I- Jesus jumped up christ," Legend laughs shakily, "Who gets adopted by a panther?"

You shrug a little, "Me, apparently. Maybe I'll befriend a rabbit next."

The rabbit comment is a spur of the moment joke out of your mouth before you register it.

Legend's ears dust pink at the tips, his eyes are wider yet. He almost squeaks when he asks, "Rabbit?"

"You never know," you say.

Legend just nods dumbly.

"Is your leg okay?" Hyrule asks, bringing the injury up again.

"There's a dull ache, but I'm fine it's not too bad."

Legend looks you over, hand twitching as if he wants to touch you and is holding himself back.

Apparently accepting that you're their soulmate allows your memories and intuition to start surfacing more.

It's... strange and sort of nice to know the chain so much better... but you already know them, even before.

This makes your head hurt.

"I could heal it?" Hyrule's offers.

You shake your head, "No thanks. Save your magic, I'll be okay."

"Are you sure?" Hyrule frowns.

"I'm sure," you say.

Your words don't seem to reassure either man much, but they seem to drop it.

"Well, it's good the skulltulas didn't win," Legend manages faintly.

Hyrule elbows his predecessor sharply.

You snort. "I'm glad about it too."

Legend gives a weak smile.

"You should go get Spooky before Twilight tries to pick them up," Hyrule says with a soft laugh as he points to the scene behind you.

That's probably a good idea.

You offer your most reassuring smile, "Spooks will love you, trust me."

You turn to go save Twilight's spine from his apparent need to lift a panther.

"We should keep moving soon," Time calls out.

Warriors watches you, Wind, and Legend. The captain notes how Sky is in front of you walking with Four. nearby but far enough away for you not to pull him into the conversation.

You're snickering as Wind flits about you and Spooky.

Warriors still can't believe you have a panther.

His Dove would never bring a panther to the group.

Wait.

Fuck.

His Dove would absolutely do that.

He gives a slow, heavy sigh that does nothing to diminish the aching fondness.

Warriors shouldn't think you bringing home a random panther is adorable. He really, really shouldn't.

He does anyway.

He finds himself tuning into your conversation.

"Keep your panther on the other side of you," Legend groans when Spooky tries to sniff him again.

You snort, gently pushing Spooky away. "Be nice, pumpkin."

Legend just sighs, "I can't believe you're calling that predator something so sweet."

"What can I say? It fits," You laugh, scratching Spooky's face.

Wind glares at Legend. "Are you giving them shit about the best cat ever?"

Warriors agrees with the groan Legend gives.

"Wind," you sigh.

"All I'm saying is that hearing a predator get called 'pumpkin' is strange," Legend says easily.

"That's ridiculous," Wind scoffs.

"Okay, well, Ledge has a point," you shrug.

"Ledge?" Wind snickers.

Legend just sighs heavily, with far more token exhaustion than anything. "Just shut up, sailor."

"What, you don't mind being called Ledge?" Wind grins.

"I won't call you that if you don't want me to?" You offer.

Warriors can barely stand this conversation, and he isn't even in it.

"It's fine," Legend says with only a little panic. You know the normal amount of panic.

"You sure?"

"It's fine," Legend waves off.

"Oh, that bridge dosen’t look steady," Hyrule says from ahead.

That last bit feel ominous...

The group gathers around Time a few feet from the bridge.

"Maybe one at a time?" Warriors suggests.

There's a few rounds of agreement, and then there's the debate of who goes first.

Wild and Time go first.

Then Hyrule and Sky

Then Wind and Twilight go.

Four goes after that with Legend.

Your turn comes, and you cross it, with Warriors, making it halfway before the bridge breaks, and you both fall.

There's a heart-stopping stillness and cracking sounds.

Warriors manages to make panicking eye contact with Time as the old man grabs Legend and Sky to stop them from running at you two.

The bridge gives out, and all Warriors can hear is screaming and air.

There's screaming of both of your names and Warriors has just enough sense to reach out and grab your wrist.

His hand closes around your wrist just before you both plunge into the river.

All sense of direction is lost in the current.

Water rushes around him, pressure changing.

He tightens his grip on your wrist.

Light is visible.

Warriors feels you try to get to the light, so he kicks his feet to try and help, still holding your wrist.

There's pressure and then -

Warriors breaks the surface in time to see you.

You give shuttering, wheezing coughs.

He hopes this is the worst of your problems.

Ketto's Update Thoughts - SE Basement 1

So, in all honesty, there's not all that much to talk about here, as most of the update was fighting and, well, I'm sure there is a lot to be said about the fighting styles of the boys and the game references and consistency of style, but I never played SkSw or TwiPri, so I can't speak for anything on their fighting styles, other than they both look like badasses!

That said, this update does further confirm that Twilight is that one guy who talks about home and his friends whenever given the chance. We're seen how a lot of the rest are cagey about talking about people they know, or even are unclear about it themselves (Wild), or perhaps only bring up things for the express purpose of confusing the rest and then not saying more (Time). Between this and the Sunset arc, we can see that Twi's probably more of a blabbermouth about home than the rest.

Warriors has heard enough to be able to name people, accurately at that, off the top of his head. And sure, this could partially be the uncannily good memory of most Links, or even an army-taught proficiency for remembering names, but the fact remains that anyone else actually knows anything about Twi's home, I doubt the same could really be said of the rest, except for Time, who's home they've been to.

This update opens with Twilight asking about Sky's home though.

These two tend to really get along, which is fun to see, but also really sweet. Where Warriors and Twilight have a sort of good-natured harshness to them, and Twilight obviously looks up to and respects Time (who clearly loves him like his own), Sky is more Twilight's age and, while they're very different, they're also very similar.

Sky is also open to talking about home- no suprise, especially after Miss Her, where we see he deals with homesickness and thus also talks about his family/friends around the rest too, although we don't know how much. I like though that Twilight is, of course, asking about Sky's stead, and also, finally, bringing up his own skyward experiences! (Although Sky does NOT look impressed, LOL)

Sky, my darling with the best one-liners, I adore you.

Back on topic though- it's nice to see these two comparing experiences and talking about their homes/friends. It's just those first two pages, but it's good to see. I mean, we all know Twilight's got probably the best chemistry with any of his brothers, getting along with all of them to an extent and always in such wholesome ways (unless you're Warriors), but his and Sky's shared moments are always especially wholesome to me <3

Now, plot wise, there's not a lot to comment on here.

I do think that the comment Twilight made about the light getting better might be an indicator that the torch Legend and Hyrule lit might have been a trigger for the lights in other chambers, but it also very well might have been a trigger for something else. Based off my knowledge of old Zelda dungeons though, if it is a control for the lights, than it is entirely plausible that, after a set time, it will need to be lit again and all the lights elsewhere will go out. This could be interesting to see, especially in a battle scenario. We've seen the boys go up against a few foes now, but darkness seems to be the main goal, albeit in the form of a Shadow, so having them fight IN the dark might be interesting.

I am curious to see if the two sides of the dungeon mirror each other. Sometimes that is the case, and sometimes not, but if it does, than that means that Twilight and Sky are bound to run across Wild and Warriors, just like the Downfall Duo and Age Bookends ran into each other and split off again. I'm curious, in that case, how that interaction will go, because we've seen Twilight around both Wars and Sky at the same time before (Sunset arc), but not with Wild in the mix. After what we saw before they split off, I feel like there would be some exchanging of glances at the least, what with Wild's current impression of Warriors still being more on the unfavorable side.

Who can say though; dungeons are tricky, especially Downfall Dungeons, which this seems to take a lot of cues from (although it might just seem that way to me because I've only played Downfall games).

Anyways, that's all I've got! The boys were total badasses and proved their skill, proved Twilight can hold his own (two against one, hot dog!) but also that Sky was definitely the best choice, as he's not all distracted and fussy over Twi during their fight, and thus able to focus on his foe better.

I'll leave the sword-fighting analysis for the experts though, LOL

I'm not usually one to ask for anything, you know that well, but today...

Today I woke up curious, and I came to ask, if you have, any headcannon of the other links. Sage/Tears,Calamity/soldier,Koridai, Courage, First and maybe also about Shadow...that art of Dree left me thirsty for Four emo.

Alright alright! I hear you! Took forever to search for my old discussion about them

and at the end of the day, I just asked Yandy and Dree to hand in what we talked about. (Thank you my lovely dears, I always adore you~)

Anywho (sorry for it’s all over the place!)

So here are those headcanons!

- Courage was a street rat who earned a name for himself by using his street smarts to provide for himself. He was noticed by the royal family and initially hired to be a guard in the Castle. After learning Courage is the hero he left to travel and adventure.

- Korodai was similarly poor and orphaned but worked his way up through the Church of Hylia, not taking any serious vows but still training to be the Hyrulian equivalent of a monk who can kick ass(so like a knight for the church). He was still pretty goofy and silly though in spite of his intelligence.

- The people in the church learned he was the hero and sent him to the Royal Family where he continued his training. Korodai’s journey in “Faces of Evil” is his first official journey.

- Courage is incredibly strong, similar to Twilight except even moreso. People don’t really see this coming because of his lackadaisical and unserious nature, they don’t expect him to actually be that powerful.

- Because of his history on the streets, Courage never knew how to properly interact with nobility and royalty, which is how his “love-hate” relationship with Wisdom(his Zelda) started. He was attracted to her but she didn’t like how he had no manners and thus started the cycle.

- Both Korodai and Courage are exceptionally clever and resourceful.

(….And if one is around, so is the other. They are a duo! )

Im sure Calamity/Soldier (I call him Cal) is very much the silent stalker yandere.

I feel like he can’t feel himself being able to fit in with the chain.

Because all of them are heroes, but the Master Sword doesnt even answer to him.

Or at least hasn’t said a word.

Basically all of these guys around him are accomplished but well, him? He’s not so special. The only way he knows how is to be darling's shadow.

And therefore follow them and around?

Maybe he’s learned some manners being the princess' guard, so he treats darling like royalty and their word is law hahaha.

Sage? Overprotective to the max.

If Sage is Wild but hasn’t met darling until his third adventure, I think he would be very willing to see darling as a goddess easier.

In his eyes, she’d be unlike anyone he’s ever known. This reverence might show in small ways, he’s always gentle with her, speaks to her with the utmost respect, and sometimes catches himself just watching her in quiet awe, as if he can’t believe she’s real.

Cuz Darling would be like a breath of fresh air for him since everyone around him took advantage of him or only cared about him being the hero.

he’d also have possessive streak that he keeps under tight control, but any hint of jealousy unleashes it. If he sees someone getting too close to Darling, he’d be tempted to step in immediately, but hold back with a calm, collected demeanor.

His icy gaze speaks volumes though.

Darling is worth any sacrifice, and he makes it clear that he would do anything to keep her safe, even if it means his own life. (Though (y/n) is definitely working on fixing that mentality if she is aware of it.)

Her presence alone eases the burdens he’s carried for so long, helping him feel grounded and human in a way he hasn’t experienced in years.

After years of being questioned or pushed to his limits, Sage finally finds someone whose judgment he respects without question.

If she tells him to rest or take a step back, he listens, even if every fiber of his being wants to protect her.

Though, he’s the type to stay up until she falls asleep, keeping a silent watch over her to ensure nothing can disturb her rest.

First feels like the one who’s more jaded than Legend??? Kinda?

Because compared to Legend, First canonically points out how he’s only used for convenience when he’s really needed.

Hmmm...I personal always imagine First being very soft spoken (well, when he wasn't angered to the point of raising his voice)

Not super soft spoken, not like he’s a fragile person, but very calming to hear.

And he loves every part of her, even if it pains him to see her in any negative/unhappy state.

Would he want to show her the true depth of his loyalty and love? Absolutely.

But he'd also want her comforted and happy.

If she ever drifts off to sleep in his arms, he's whispering all his words to her. All the things he'd held back on saying when she was conscious.

They'd be intense, overwhelming, very very...well...Yandere. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If she heard it, she'd definitely be frightened by the weight behind it.

But he waits until she's deeply asleep to do so. Maybe a small part of his hoping a small part of her acknowledges his words, even if he'd rather her not be aware what atrocities he'd commit in order to protect her.

First may be jaded, but he keeps his darker thoughts deeply buried. He despises anyone who threatens her happiness, his face a mask of calm while his heart seethes with unspoken rage. (You know how everyone agrees Sky has a scary face when angered? That’s First, he rivals Sky with his scariness except it’s colder.)

Behind the scenes, he’d handle any threat swiftly, never letting it reach her attention.

Shadow. He gives me vibes where he likes to cause harm for the fun of it. He enjoys causing chaos and despair and taunts people.

But he also yearns for companionship.

Shadow gets an undeniable thrill from causing chaos. He knows how to push buttons and stoke insecurities, loving the reactions he pulls from people.

But he’d be surprisingly gentle around (y/n), changing his dark sense of humor just a bit to make her smile.

When (y/n) pays attention to someone else, Shadow sulks like a petulant child. He’s prone to shooting them glares, muttering under his breath, and might even playfully (or not so playfully) trip them up just to remind her where her focus should be.

Shadow has no filter around people he doesn’t like, especially if they’re close to (y/n). His sarcasm can cut like a knife, and he won’t hesitate to call them out in the most biting way possible if he senses even a hint of a threat.

Shadow has a talent for inconveniencing others while staying just on the edge of innocence with (y/n). It could be someone’s drink spilling, their cloak tripping them up (or down a flight of stairs), or anything that paints them as awkward or foolish in front of her. He finds it hilariously satisfying.

Shadow wants to be the only one who can make (y/n) laugh, surprise her, or put a smile on her face. If someone else manages to get a genuine laugh out of her, he sees it as a challenge, scheming immediately about how he’ll one up them next time.

He’s not above showing his irritation in front of her if she’s giving too much attention to someone else. A muttered, “What, are they that funny?” or a dramatic sigh as he stands just a little too close, casting glances that all but scream “notice me instead.”

Shadow’s affection for (y/n) is one of the only things that holds him back from outright causing harm.
