In einer lebensfeindlichen Welt
Im Ödland lauern schlimmere Gefahren, als marodierende Banden. Das Wasteland-Virus hat einst die Menschheit beinahe ausgelöscht und lauert nun dort immer noch im Boden und der Luft. Das Betreten der Gegend ist nur mit Atemmaske möglich. Nicht für Laylay. Aus irgendwelchen Gründen ist sie gegen das Virus immun. Deshalb ist es auch sie, die Zeeto aufspüren soll, als der junge Mann nicht aus dem Ödland zurückkehrt. Da ist er allerdings bereits infiziert und auch Laylay stellt nach ihrer Rückkehr fest, dass sie beginnt sich zu verändern.
Post-apokalyptische Welten wie in „Wasteland“ liefern spannenden Erzählstoff. Gerade, weil die gesellschaftliche Ordnung nicht mehr gilt und die Regeln für das Zusammenleben auf Null gesetzt werden. Mit Laylay und Zeeto haben Judith und Christian Vogt zwei völlig gegensätzliche Charaktere erschaffen, die entsprechend ihrer unterschiedlichen Wesen auch mit verschiedenen Erzählstimmen sprechen. Während Laylay ihre Sicht der Ereignisse als typische Ich-Erzählerin vermittelt, wendet sich Zeeto direkt an die Leser. Die Sprache der beiden ist von Kraftausdrücken geprägt, was angesichts des Zerfalls der erzählten Welt aber absolut passend ist. Dass Schimpfworte wie „verfakkt“ so geschrieben werden, wie man sie spricht, passt ebenfalls in diesen Kontext.
Eine weitere Besonderheit der Sprache sind die gendergerechten Formulierungen. So wird beispielsweise die Anführerin einer Motorradband zu „die Boss“. Am Anfang der Geschichte stolpert man noch ein wenig darüber, allerdings gewöhnt man sich bereits nach ein paar Seiten daran. Ebenso wie die Verwendung von Worten, Namen oder auch Sätzen aus verschiedenen Sprachen. So bekommt ein Baby einen kiswahelischen Namen und Laylay wechselt mit ihrem Vater ab und an Sätze auf Türkisch. Die Multilingualität trägt zusätzlich zu dem Eindruck bei, dass die Menschen aufgrund des Virus zusammengerückt sind. Und dann wiederum auch nicht. Hinten im Buch befindet sich eine Inhaltswarnung, die darauf hinweist, dass in der Geschichte auch sensible Themen bzw. Themen, die als Auslösereize funktionieren können, behandelt werden. Eine raue Welt, die ihrem Kontext in Inhalt und Sprache absolut treu bleibt, dem Leser aber auch was abverlangt.

Google and Facebook’s duopoly in digital marketing isn’t just bad for business, it is a threat to the diversification and quality of digital content. Their dominance makes it difficult for other ad solutions to compete and leaves publishers almost no choice but to use Google and Facebook monetization tools. Should a site or an app not abide by the giants’ editorial policies, it is left with limited alternatives for making money.
For both Google and Facebook, data is the competitive advantage. In the early days of the internet, lots of companies, and even individuals, sold ad inventory. When AdSense entered the scene in 2003, it added efficiencies to the process, but it didn’t immediately annihilate the other players. The game changed when Google took its search data and layered it over its ad exchange. Google has fantastic solutions, employs brilliant minds, and is certainly an innovator. But it wasn’t its technology that sealed its position as leader of the pack, it was data.
The same is true for Facebook. It supercharged its advertising program by allowing marketers to access a unique and powerful data set – personal information it collects from its users based on their posts and interactions. Critics maintain that Facebook isn’t transparent enough about how it collects and uses data, but it has become such a staple in the marketplace that its tactics are rarely challenged.
Google and Facebook aren’t acting maliciously, it is just that no one can compete with the targeting capabilities their data unlocks. Until something emerges that is as disruptive as their solutions, we are going to be stuck with just two major players taking a lion’s share of the market.
The State of the Market
In the U.S., digital advertising grew by 22 percent, to $72.5 billion, according to a recent report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). IAB executives say that 69 percent of the growth is contributed to the top 10 industry players, but calculations by other pundits suggest that almost all new ad spending is going straight to Google or Facebook.
These digital juggernauts have too much power over the information economy. Everyone, or at least anyone who wants to use one of their products, is forced to play by their rules—rules that they control and change as they see fit. Google and Facebook are both impressive companies with effective solutions, but they should not determine who can and cannot publish content. Publishers--meaning media companies, web developers, app developers, forums, small content creators, and anyone who wants to create and distribute information on the internet--need other ways to generate revenue.
The Consequence is Diminished Choice
The proliferation of subpar content, e.g., the clickbait headlines that clutter content recommendation tools, encapsulates how money is made online. Publishers need to sensationalize headlines and content to drive traffic. If they don’t, they won’t have a large enough readership to charge the CPMs they need to make money with Google and Facebook.
If someone creates an amazing new app but it can’t be monetized by Google, is it even sustainable? Plus, when publishers use these solutions, they have to split the revenue with the solution provider. There is nothing wrong with Facebook and Google taking their share, it is just that the lack of direct-to-advertiser solutions for publishers exasperates their monetization challenges.
Let’s say Google decides its advertisers don’t want to be associated with a certain political view, so it pulls their ads from sites that reflect that perspective. Now those sites struggle to make money and, worst case, go under. Whether intentional or not, this limits the breadth of digital content. One could even argue it feels a lot like censorship.
We’ve already seen this play out. YouTube, a Google subsidiary, is under fire for its “restricted mode,” which is designed to help advertisers ensure their ads aren’t served alongside “inappropriate” content. But what qualifies as “inappropriate”? Google’s algorithm determines that. Several LGBT YouTubers, feminists, gamers, and a wide-range of other content creators say the new mode is censoring their channels. This may not be on purpose, but the effects remain the same.
The more money publishers make, the better the internet will be. If we want a free and vibrant internet, we have to support it. Users should think of how a publisher makes its money. Don’t use ad blockers, and consider subscribing to sites you frequent. But the onus is really on the industry to create new monetization solutions. The only way we will be able to compete with the big guys is with big data – the source of the big guys’ power in the first place. What this next generation of data-powered tools will look like remains to be seen, but let’s hope they start emerging soon. The democratization of the internet may depend on it.
