I guess I never really left but I’m putting my scans hat back on. Letting myself just... not clean everything was very liberating. So what I’ve decided to clean will be very inconsistent, but I’m looking into more fonts so hopefully that’ll be better. I think what I did clean looks very good though, and it’s only sfx that I haven’t cleaned

Zanghaihua C10 - The Limit of the World

As always, if you want to work on this and have experience with either CL/RD or TS, please please shoot me a message. Actually a proofreader would be nice too, but I’m probably in greater need of cleaners and typesetters.

I tried a little harder with font choices this time since it’s gonna look almost like a proper scanlation release, but I’m not sure if it’s that much better. There were some things I didn’t want to clean because I just couldn’t see myself doing a good job/it was super labour intensive and I didn’t want to bother, but I did try my best with what I did clean. Still not proofread and not QC-ed other than me taking a brief glance at every page as I uploaded.

I don’t know how much more I’m going to be working on honestly. I have literally nothing to do right now and this still took me 10 days to finish. I’d probably need 2 months to finish a chapter when life starts back up again, and I don’t know how appealing shoulder and neck pain from cleaning with a mouse sounds when I actually have things to do. But for now, enjoy Him in Tibet.

Zanghaihua C11 - The End of the Passage

I’ve decided I won’t be recruiting because I can’t guarantee I’ll work on this with any kind of consistency, but enjoy the chapter! This is honestly a very high-quality manhua (even if the scanlation isn’t).

Scanlating this manhua made me appreciate it even more. I just love the art style, the composition of some panels, and how detailed almost all of them are. Even if it is DMBJ and Zanghaihua in particular, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t genuinely think it’s just a good manhua that should be read.

This time I think I used some better fonts. The one I used for small text and some sfx last time, Akbar, doesn’t really fit at times. I didn’t clean all sfx, and didn’t translate all of them either. After what felt like twenty whooshes I just thought there wasn’t much point. The ones I did do are plot-relevant or to convey motion. Atmospheric ones are whatever, you can look at the (beautifully) hand-lettered original sfx and get it without me covering it up with a poorly typeset translation. I still regret that one scream from last chapter that was so good and I lost all of the power when I typeset over it. It was a speech bubble though, so I don’t know what I could’ve done there.

This took me more and less time than I expected. I wasn’t wrong when I said last time it’ll take me two months for the next, though I was horribly wrong about life starting again (I’ve forced it to a halt but it’ll catch up to and crush me soon). When I actually got down to doing it, it took me less time. The cleans I did on and off over two months (read: I booted up PS, took a look at it, tweaked something, gave up - rinse and repeat until I gave up for good). Typesetting was easier because I’ve found some fonts last time and also I learnt how to look for fonts since then, so that I finished over the past two or three days.

Please forgive my shit typesetting on the last page. If I don’t give up I might consider getting better fonts. Oh and also my shit cleaning and redrawing. Hopefully this isn’t formatted too bad either. Aggregators don’t come after me.

Chapter 10 title page because I’ve been spending too much time writing long rambles on lore the past two days and haven’t really been working on this. I am done cleaning and redrawing what I can (lol) so the worst part is over? Typesetting also sucks because everything I do is just ugly and nowhere as good as the original. Maybe I shouldn’t bother cleaning if I’m just going to typeset shitty sfx over it.

I’ve decided I want to go with volume chapter numbering, so this will be like 20p. I’ll probably host it on imgur or something when I finally finish.

I don’t know if I could get it across in my font choice, but the original font looked tibetan script inspired and I wanted some of those... angles?

An extra 4-panel joke from the Zanghaihua manhua. I forget which volume because I stole the original from the internet (hence the bad quality and cropping). The original scans group dropped this like years ago and I thought of doing it slowly solo, but I took a look at the redrawing required and lol no.

I’ll probably be posting zanghaihua ch 10 soon but I’m not sure if I’ll keep doing this. It’ll kind of look more like a proper scanlation since I’m doing the full chapter this time, not just a couple of pages where He shows up like I did with chapter 9. I’m torn between feeling proud of what I could do and very uncomfortable with the overall quality given the parts I didn’t manage or didn’t want to clean and the genuinely shit font choices I made. I’m not even confident of the TL because I’ve not even been proofreading. On the one hand, I want to claim ownership (of sorts) over this project, which I could if I uploaded it to mangadex, but I also don’t want my usual scans profile associated with it and I don’t want it to be picked up by aggregators. I’m less concerned with people claiming it, because the DMBJ fandom is pretty small and I think as a diehard Zanghaihua fan, I’d end up seeing it again if it was reposted without credit.

The other thing is that I do want to promote it? I’m not that proud of my work, but the Zanghaihua manhua is actually really good. IMO, it’s a lot better than most of what I’ve seen in the chongqi manhua. If I just wanted some internet points in the dmbj fandom, I’d go scanlate the chongqi manhua. I’ve already seen some of it and it looks hella easy to clean. Typesetting in colour isn’t something I’ve tried before, but I could ask around for help. Only problem is I fucking love zanghaihua, and I love how good the manhua looks. I’m not comfortable with saying my scan is good, but the manhua is great - I’ve noticed this more while I’ve been working on it. The sfx and some bubbles are probably hand-lettered with a brush. I can’t replicate that at all. All I can do is cover it up with some shitty font I randomly picked up from other scan projects my group works on. I don’t mean this as a criticism of chongqi manhua, but I think this kind of thing just makes it an objectively better manhua. I want more people to see the Zanghaihua manhua, and I know scanlating it, even if it’s not great, will help with that. I just have to resign myself to the fact that no matter how hard I try, nothing beats being able to read it in the original language, with all the original lettering.
